<<Xavier's POV>>
Zoe had been distant with me since we started the road trip. Who could blame her? I didn't. I blamed my bad decisions for putting such a wall between us that it was going to be hard to break it down and get to her.
But I was nothing if I wasn't relentless.
We had no idea what to expect in Kansas City. I would've asked someone to fly in and take a look before us just for Zoe's safety. But, I needed to stay out of touch for the sake of keeping my pack safe from the consequences of my actions.
An Alpha was nothing without his pack. But, a wolf was nothing without his mate. To be a stronger Alpha and protect my people, I needed to be a better mate. And that meant doing everything I could to seek Zoe's forgiveness and hopefully take her back to my pack that had been without a leader for so long.
I knew leaving Gramps in charge was as good as it could get. She was resourceful and wise but the world was changing. Awful things were going on. I was hoping that this road trip with Zoe could be my salvation as much as it could be hers.
As she sat across me at the small diner, there were so many things that I wanted to say to her. There were so many things we needed to do. We had already wasted so much time. First, me with my indecisiveness and Claire, and then, with Peterson and Golden Eclipse. I was so ready to put everything behind us and start again. If only she would give us a second chance. I imagined letting me come with her was a good enough start, even though I was not allowed to talk much.
I could sense that she was going through something. She kept talking to her animal, which was fair. After all, I used to talk to Spike for hours when he woke up for the first time. But it was different with Zoe. It was probably because of all the loss in her life. She didn't smile anymore. She talked less and when she did it was only 'Don't do this' or 'Don't do that' and 'Do this' or 'Do that'.
I knew I was a major culprit in getting her there. I intended to change that.
Despite everything, she was so beautiful and unique. I wondered if she realized how gorgeous she was even if she was road-and-loss weary. I could see that she was tired. So, I started thinking about how to make her rest for the night. I couldn't complain, or she would just ask me to stay silently or go back and I couldn't let her go alone.
Our dinner was served and she silently dug in. She kept glancing out of the window. I could sense that she felt uncomfortable sitting across from me when she blamed me for her father's death. I blamed myself for Joe's death. I should've ordered someone to keep him away. Of course, a father would be worried about his only child. Not every father was like mine.
"The car needs rest. It has been driven all day. That's more than how much it has been driven in more than a decade. Let's get a room. You can rest your eyes too." I finally said as I paid the bill despite her trying to pay for herself.
She was about to answer when a yawn interrupted her and she turned away from me to look at the car. After a second, she sighed and walked away.
"Keep up, will you?" She said behind her and I started following her.
"Are we staying?" I asked just to confirm.
She whirled around to face me and stopped, "First of all, there is no we. And second, I will do as I please. You are welcome to go back for all I care. You are only here because of Aunt Julie."
I wanted to smile. She looked adorable as she looked up at me. The way her hair fell across the shaven side of her head. The way her eyes lit up with emotion. She was a strong woman to be acting the way she was after everything she had been through. The diner lights reflected in her eyes and I felt drawn to her.
She was saying something but every time she looked at me, I felt blown away by my feelings. It had been so freeing to accept what I felt for her, instead of fighting and pushing her away. I was stupid enough to push her too hard, but I was going to grasp at straws if it meant Zoe was on the other end.
"Ugh!" She groaned and got into the car. My lack of response must've made her frustrated. But it was better to be silent and let her vent than talk back and give her more reason to be upset at me.
I got into the passenger seat and she started driving.
I stopped myself from smiling when we pulled over in the parking lot of a local motel. She had decided to take my advice after all. I had never been to such places. But I was not going to complain as long as it meant I was close to Zoe.
I followed her in as she got us rooms.
She talked with the receptionist and turned to give me a key. I cocked a brow, "We should save money and get one room."
She rolled her eyes and walked away, "Not even in your dreams."
Whether the swing of her hip was intentional or not, it didn't escape my notice. My heart skipped a beat. Did this mean that she was softening towards me? Or was I just being too hopeful and looking for clues where there were none? After all, it was our first day on the road. Maybe it was Dahlia's doing. Who knows.
That night, Zoe and I lay in small, smelly, motel rooms across each other. I couldn't sleep the whole night, for many reasons. But most of all, I was ready to start taking action to prove to Zoe how desperate I was for her forgiveness.
>Zoe woke Xavier up early the next day and took breakfast to-go. She was eager to get to the coordinates left by her mother. She was desperate to find meaning in her life. She needed to find a purpose. They only stopped at a gas station to refuel and took lunch to-go before getting back on the road. Xavier was worried for Zoe but he was hoping that whatever was awaiting them in Kansas would help Zoe the way she needed. The journey was monotonous and silent. Spike was eager to converse with Dahlia but Dahlia had yet to accept his mind-link. Dahlia was eager to know more about her mate but she was loyal to her human and if Zoe was that upset with him, he must've hurt her quite badly. Which made me a little mad at him too. Mates are supposed to respect, love, and protect each other. They are supposed to have each other's back, but Zoe's mate had abandoned her and chosen someone else.Sun was about to set, sending orange and golden hues to dance across the sky. Flocks of bird
>"Are you okay?" Xavier asked for the nth time that night and received the same response, "Yes, I am fine. Stop asking that.""Just checking." He shrugged."Don't." Zoe rolled her eyes and huffed. He knew that for the first time on this journey, she was less mad at him and more mad at the weather. As they were stranded in the middle of nowhere with no idea how to call for help, the clear evening sky had turned cloudy and it had begun pouring in the matter of half an hour. Zoe and Xavier had taken refuge in the car. Zoe sat with crossed arms, occasionally sighing at the weather in the driver seat and Xavier burned the battery of his useless phone while playing offline games. They had no idea how long the weather was to continue and they couldn't go anywhere in that weather without being soaked to the bones. Which was why, they had no choice but to spend the night in the car.It had been a long day, eating on the road and driving non-stop. Zoe didn't know when she felt slee
>Zoe held on to Xavier's hand as tightly as she could and let him lead her.Xavier was worried about Zoe but he had never been more grateful for a thunderstorm before in his life. Moon Goddess was on his side. He could feel it. And was ready to take full advantage of the given chance. The old man led them through a barely existent path in the woods using the light from his torch. The rain was resuming a sprinkle."How far is the cabin?!" Xavier asked, worried for Zoe. She was holding his hand so tightly that her knuckles turned white. Any normal person wouldn't have been able to take the power of fear coursing through her. Each time the thunder sounded, she shuddered. Zoe was trying her best not to cry. She didn't want to be seen as weak but her panic attack was inevitable. She just wanted to be indoors when she finally lost it."Just around the bend in the path." The old man answered without looking back. Xavier rolled his eyes. He was still wary of the old man. "Yeah, w
>The dinner was delicious. Zoe quietly sipped on her mushroom soup, but Xavier looked everywhere for clues. He had seen many shady people in his life and this old man was very shady. A lot of things he said did not match what Xavier was seeing around the cabin. The place was too well-kept for an old man's cabin in the woods. "So, your son's a mechanic?" Xavier started with small talk."Yes." The old man gave a short answer and focused on the toasted cheesy garlic bread on his plate. "Why settle in the woods where rarely any car passes? Why not get a job at some workshop in the town?" Xavier pushed casually."The road busier than you imagine. This is our family cabin. My grandfather built it. My ancestors were gatherers. Woods worked in our favor for generations. It was only honorable to stay." The old man did not meet Xavier's eyes while answering and Xavier found that odd. Usually, liars don't look in the eyes while talking.Xavier let Spike sniff out any suspicious s
>Zoe and Xavier were done having breakfast when a boy, a few years younger than Xavier walked in, wiping greasy hands on his dirty apron. "Morning everyone." He said cheerfully. His father immediately got up and started getting coffee ready for his son while the boy nodded at the guests before going to his room to change. He returned a few minutes later and received the steaming cup of coffee from his father before taking his seat at the breakfast table."The car is all fixed up and ready to drive many miles." The boy said to Zoe and Xavier."What was wrong with it?" Xavier asked keenly, trying to read the boy and his intentions."The electronics were fried, among other things. Happens in modified older models." The boy said and started buttering a slice of fresh bread. Zoe got up to get the coat she was wearing last night from the guest room. Before anyone could say anything else, the old man placed a piece of paper in front of Xavier, who looked quizzically at the old m
>The sun had gone down when the car took a U-turn and headed to the coordinates on the unopened envelope Zoe was carrying in her bag. The envelope had the same seal as was carved on the wooden box from which the envelope had been taken. The mysterious intricate patterns meant nothing to Zoe or Xavier as neither had come across anything like that before. The coordinates led them to an elite nightclub that required either a membership or some very expensive tickets. They waited in the parking lot to come up with a plan.Zoe was confused. Why would her mother give the address of a nightclub to her little daughter? Xavier had gone to make a few calls and Zoe decided to do some research."We should go. Check in a hotel or something. We need more information. There is no way your mother wanted you to come to a nightclub in Kansas." Xavier said what had been going through Zoe's head already. She pulled out of the parking lot without responding to him. She was curious about who he
>"I'm going to shower," Zoe announced as soon as they entered their hotel room.Xavier smirked to himself and walked over to the window that looked over the neighborhood. It wasn't a bad view. With hands in his pocket, he stood deep in thought. He had a lot to think about. He knew abandoning his pack to go after this mate was a complicated idea but he didn't expect it to have such an effect on his pack. The calls he made earlier had worried him. But he didn't want to let Zoe know anything. She had been eager to send him away from the start and they were finally making some progress.Zoe stripped down and let the hot shower water wash her fatigue away. She stood there with her eyes closed, lost in thought. She had a lot to think about. She was far from home. Where was home anyway? She couldn't possibly return to her either of old packs to stay like before. A blurred image flashed in her mind. It was a woman in a blue flower dress, mid-length, flowing in wind. The woman had
>The next morning, Zoe woke up snuggling to something hard yet warm. It couldn't be a pillow, she thought. Xavier woke up before Zoe. It was the most beautiful morning he had in a while. It was also the most peaceful he had slept in a while. He admired her as she slept. Her head nuzzled in his chest, her arm wrapped on his torso under the blanket and their legs intertwined like they were where they belonged. Their animals had been in bliss for hours. Of course, their humans sleeping beside each other wasn't enough to quench their thirst for each other, but it was a start.Xavier felt Zoe stir. Her heartbeat picked up pace and she felt around his torso. He smiled to himself at her involuntary touch before he relaxed and closed his eyes, pretending to still be asleep.Zoe opened her eyes, groggily before she was slapped awake by the fact that she was hugged THE XAVIER SHAW in her sleep. How had she ended up in the bed with him? So many thoughts ran through her head. She loo
>It took me a few minutes until a vine design caught my eye. It expressed my twisted life and my state of mind perfectly."This one, on the shaved side of my head," I told Judy. She took a look at the table, "This one will take five hours, at least. Possibly more." She looked at me, "Have you ever had a tattoo before?" I shook my head."I'd recommend a small quote on a wrist to see if you can handle it for the first time, instead of going straight to the scalp. It's a sensitive area." Judy advised."I can handle. Pain is a kind of a bestie now." I couldn't tell her that being with Dahlia had heightened my pain tolerance and once you break all bones of your body to turn into a werewolf-Lycan hybrid, nothing else can hurt as much."One last question," Judy placed her hands on her hips sassily, "With everything you just told me that you've lost. How will you pay for the tattoo? As sorry as I feel for you, this ain't no charity here, sweetheart.""We'll pay through this," Xa
>We started walking in the direction opposite Silver Moon."Oh, come on!" Xavier yelled behind another van that did not stop for us, making me smile."Maybe they are intimidated by you," I said, trying to hide how amused I was at his behavior. The great Alpha Shaw getting frustrated because a vehicle didn't stop for him."If it's so funny to you, why don't you try it?" He frowned. I guess I wasn't as great at hiding my amusement as I thought I was. Or maybe I didn't really want to."Sure," I took the challenge, "Stay out of sight if you can," I said while making him walk near the ditch on the side of the road, as I sinched up the waist of my dress tighter and pushed up my breasts to show some cleavage."What are you doing?" Xavier asked, sounding jealous and protective."Using what Moon Goddess gave me," I smirked. I had been waiting for the opportunity to get back at him for walking around naked in front of me. Of course, I wasn't going to take off my dress, but this was
>Zoe was stunned as the cave if the mouth closed like a mountain as if there was never a cave opening to begin with. Even though Xavier knew what he was doing, he hadn't seen the artifact in action. So, he was equally surprised and impressed that it had worked to perfection. "Where did Maisie get that?" Zoe asked in dibelief still staring the magic that had happened before her eyes. "She didn't. She made it." Xavier said and turned around. He quickly erased as many car tracks as he could or covered those he couldn't before returning to Zoe,"We shouldn't waste anymore time, I'll shift and you hold on tight, alright?" He could've made a suggestive joke about it but he seemed too alert and suddenly in a hurry. "Alright," Zoe replied before asking cautiously, "Xavier, is everything okay?" "I'm not sure yet, " He looked around suspiciously, "Whatever it is, it's too far for now," Then he turned to her seriously, "Let's not wait for it to reach us." With that, he was alr
>Spike gave up control back to Xavier, who shifted to his human form, buck naked in all his glory. At first, Zoe tried to look elsewhere, believing it was a mistake on his part because they were in a state of extreme worry and hurry. But then, he tilted his head at her reaction and sauntered over confidently, not caring about his nakedness or the dirt and humus sticking to his bare feet.Instead of going to the back of the car and getting dressed, he stood before Zoe until she looked him right in the eyes, "I see clothes are not an option right now." She said sarcastically. He leaned in sensually and whispered in her ear with a smirk, "Nothing you haven't seen before."Not wanting to let him see the effect that he had on her, "In case you have forgotten, we are still on the run. We need to cross that border." She made sure that practiced extreme self-control and did not let her eyes wander anywhere. The kiss that they had shared did not mean that she was ready for the next
>Xavier had no idea what was happening but trusted his mate and her animal. So, he pressed gas and they did not stop until they were near the Silver Moon borders. Zoe and Xavier exchanged confused glances as they stopped behind a long queue."What are they doing?" Xavier muttered to himself as he craned his neck out the window to look at what was happening at the border."What do you see? Who is doing what?" Zoe asked worriedly. Dahlia was still agitated and wanted them to leave the Silver Moon territory as soon as possible. Xavier sat back, "I don't know, but Imma check it out." He got out of the car and walked to the car ahead of them. He bent at the window and asked the driver, "Hi, do you know what is going on here? When did Silver Moon tighten border security?" After all, they had entered yesterday and there was no one to stop them."The Alpha gave the order early in the morning to check and record every individual and vehicle that passes through all border gates fro
>It took a while for Dahlia to give up on Zoe's exhausted form and return the control of her body. Just like the first time, Zoe fainted instantly. Xavier found her lying in the street with John's mangled corpse beside his vehicle which they hadn't noticed parked across the street from the house when they had arrived earlier. He shifted back and carried her naked form indoors. First, he cleaned himself up and borrowed a suit from Joe Simmons' wardrobe. Then, he used a wet towel to clean Zoe up and then, picked a sky blue mid-length dress with white cotton flowers print from her closet and dressed her up as well. Then, while he waited for Zoe to regain consciousness, he dragged all the dead bodies of the rogues into the woods. He fixed the living room as much as he could and then, he went to the woods to make a pyre for Aunt Julie. She had a major role in Zoe's life and more importantly, she was an honorable werewolf who died trying to protect her loved ones. She deserved
[This chapter contains mentions of gore, torture, and loss of body parts. Reader discretion is advised.]>Zoe did not know what to believe anymore. Was Aunt Julie truly dead? Was it really John standing in front of her claiming to have killed Aunt Julie? She had so many questions. How was he there? Why wasn't John paying for his crimes in some dark dungeon?Xavier was ready to pounce on John at any moment, "Give me one good reason not to tear you to shreds right here, right now!"Anyone looking at Xavier would have fainted due to fright. But, John merely stood with his head held high and his hands in his pockets like his life wasn't being threatened by an Alpha with a wolf twice his size."How about I give you three?" John smirked and lazily leaned against the kitchen island, "First, if you kill me here and now, you will be declared a murderer and wanted for werewolfcide on foreign territory by none other than your own father. Papa Shaw is very upset, Xavier."Xavier knew
>The next morning Zoe felt rejuvenated. Her problems were still there but there was a change that was unexpected yet welcome.Xavier woke up with a smile on his face for the first time in a long while. Most of his problems were still there, but there was one issue that had been weighing on his heart the most and that was resolved last night. He understood that they still had a long way to go and things might take a while before going the way he wanted them to, but he was glad for the great start. They had a light breakfast, and Zoe took the steering wheel, deciding not to comment on his driving the previous day or what had happened between them the last night.Halfway through, she turned on the radio, surprising Xavier even more. By the time they crossed the Silver Moon border, Zoe and Xavier were singing along to the songs like they were returning from the best trip of their lives. Werewolves need a special kind of alcohol to get drunk because of their higher metabolism t
>"I remember star gazing with my mother," Xavier spoke softly, careful not to break the delicate moment they had stolen from the mess of their life."You remember your mother? Lucky you." Zoe replied, matching his tone."She was kind. Kinder than most people I've met in my life. She was like that cool breeze on a hot summer day that makes you feel like everything would be okay." Xavier reminisced about his mother. He hadn't talked about her in a long time but being there, so high above the rest of the sleeping world, he felt like he could tell Zoe anything and be understood. He had a lot to say that he had been keeping inside of him for too long."You miss her," it was not a question but an obvious statement like, "You've never talked about her before.""Since her death, Father became a much harsher man. Once the only source of empathy and kindness was gone from my life, he made sure I never talked about her. Even to myself." Xavier confessed, not taking his eyes off the s
