One Hundred and Twenty

Maya stood outside her parents' bedroom door, pacing around. She wondered how they could sleep when she was going through so much heartache. She knew she was being selfish at this point, but she couldn't sleep, she couldn't breathe properly, and she felt like she was going crazy.

She hesitated for a moment, knowing that it was early when she raised her hand to knock, but she needed to talk to her mum. She needed them to hurry with the ritual preparation. She needed people to grieve with her.

A soft knock didn't wake them up, so she had to knock harder. After a moment, the door creaked open. Her dad stood in the doorway, his eyes bleary with sleep.

"Hey kiddo, everything okay?" he asked, his voice grumpy. Maya shrugged and crossed her arms over her chest. "I need to talk to mum. Can you send for her?"

Her dad wore a confused gaze. "But it's not yet 6:00 AM, honey. She's still asleep."
