After a long ass day of searching for a solution without success, we headed back to our hotel room. My mom looked deeply pained and her movements lacked strength that I had to support her.

Sliding the smooth plastic card into the slot, I yanked it out to disengage the lock, got into the room, and opened the thick drapes on the windows.

The silence except for the hum of air conditioning was suffocating. Mom stood by the door barely speaking while I kicked off my shoes and hung my shirt on a non-removable hanger in the closet.

“Mom, if you keep beating yourself up, You're going to end up with high blood pressure,” I warned her as I put on fresh clothes, throwing a T-shirt and a pair of shorts on.

“Get a grip on your emotions, please”

She nodded and took off her shoes. “Sorry, sweetheart. I just feel so powerless and blame myself for everything. Look at the evil and danger I have exposed you to. I'm afraid that they'll win and take you away from me.”

A harsh laugh escaped
