“I know exactly who you are,” I whispered. He took a step forward and I took one back until my back hit the wall barely leaving any space between us. His eyes bore into mine,“Then tell me.” “You are the Demon wolf.” “And yet you dare to defy me?” His tone was almost playful, but there was an edge to it that made the hair on body stand. “Yes,” I swallowed hard. “I dare.” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ When Melody stands up to Carmine Moreno, the ruthless mafia werewolf lord, to save her father's life, she never imagined the dangerous path it would lead her down. Bound by a desperate deal, she becomes Carmine's 'pet' for a year, thrown into a world where power, betrayal, and passion collide. Carmine's presence sets her soul on fire, his touch sparking a desire she never knew existed. Yet, as she navigates her new life, she finds herself drawn to Carmine's close friend, Luther a man whose loyalty to the alpha is as strong as his surprising kindness to her. Amidst this confusion, Melody's hidden powers begin to awaken, powers that Carmine's pack has long wanted to use. As she deals with her growing abilities, she uncovers dark secrets that could destroy everything she cares about. The lines between friend and enemy blur, and Melody must decide who to trust in a world where everyone has their own hidden plans. Chapter 1

Prologue

~Mel~

“You don’t value what you have until you lose it.”

I don’t like to assume but I am sure out of a thousand people that would have just read that line, at least seventy of them have heard that, maybe even lived it.

Unfortunately…

I fall into that category of the latter and it all happened because of two reasons.

One. I got infected with a virus. Some people call it love. Two. I didn’t listen to the one person who saw that virus for what it was at the very start. A vile infestation that was eating away at my brain, slowly destroying every ounce of sensibility that I had in me, until it led to this point.

“Melody, do not walk away from me. I am talking to you.”

The wooden flow creaked beneath my feet as I stomped through the house trying to get away from her but she just wouldn’t stop.

“Melody!”

I finally stopped turning back to face her, my eyes burning with anger, “What? What do you want me to say? That I agree with you? That I think he is wrong for me? Because I do not. I love him, Hannah!”

“Don’t you see that he is using you?” She moved closer to me trying to touch me but I shrugged it off.

“How? Tell me how Hannah because he has done nothing wrong and the only thing you’ve done is hate on him. So tell me. Why is he so bad for me?”

Her mouth opened and closed like she wanted to say something, then she let out a deep breath, “Just please listen to me.”

“No! Not until you tell me why.”

“The reason I...” The words trailed off as she looked around, “The reason he is with you is because…” Then she went silent.

I laughed out, the sound hollow even to my ears, “I see what it is now. You don’t want me to be with him because you are jealous of what I have but it doesn’t even matter and you know why? Because I have reached a point where I want to breathe in the air that he breathes right from the moment he lets it out. I want to bury myself inside him so deep that I wouldn’t be found.”

I could feel the air cackle around us, the intensity of everything growing with each second that passed, as I watched her stare back at me with a mixture of anger and sorrow in her eyes,  “He tethers me to this world. He makes my wolf feel alive. His stare makes me burn until I cannot feel anything but the electrifying fire of his gaze.”

She shook her head slowly, the flame slowly dying out in the fireplace, “That is not love, Mel. That is obsession and it will only consume you, set you ablaze until there is nothing left but the smoke from your ashes.”

I sucked in a deep breath, letting the first tear drop fall from my eyes.

Her lips parted to continue but I stopped her before she could, “If that’s what it’s called, Obsession? I do not mind because I would rather burn, seize to exist than live with the gnawing emptiness that I feel when he is not here.”

Seconds passed and all we did was stare at each other. With no words left to say between us, I turned my back on her walking away then I heard her whisper,  “Please don’t go tonight. I beg of you,  Mel.”

My hand hovered on the door knob, “Goodbye, Hannah.”

Those were the last words I spoke to her. My best friend. The only person that saw him for what he was. I think it was rather ironic that I got to say goodbye because the next time I saw her, she had a blank stare in her eyes in addition to the blood that pooled around her body.

Yes. She was dead.

This is usually the part where the main character in a movie or book goes, ‘She was dead and it is all my fault’. I didn’t know how but I felt it. I used to find it cliche yet in this moment, those were the exact words filtering through my head, my entire body frozen in shock.

One… Two… Three…

And then my brain caught up with reality. I let out a piercing scream that echoed through the walls of our shared apartment. I rushed over to her trying to will her awake.

“No. No please. Hannah you have to wake up. Hannah please!”

The stain of red seemed to bask in my pleas and spread even more, staining my knees. This couldn’t be happening. I had to be dreaming right? No. It had to be a nightmare. I was wrong because in the span of another three seconds, the true nightmare began.

The door to the house suddenly burst open, three men in black suits pouring in. I froze right on the spot, unable to move, my eyes wide at the gun pointed right in my face by the biggest of the three.

I didn’t understand what was happening. A week ago, I was a twenty  year college old girl in love. That same week, my best friend had told me that I was in love with the wrong man, an argument that seeped into one hour ago when I had walked out on her and now she was dead.

I was seconds away from joining her by the looks of things.

So yet again. What. Was. Happening?

The man in the middle suddenly moved, paving way for none other than Victor? For context, Victor was my boyfriend. The man who had infected with the virus Hannah warned me about.

The words fell out of my lips in a stutter, “Victor.. What.. What is going on?”

He stared at me blankly like I was a distant shadow. I could still see the gun pointed at me from the corner of my eyes then he spoke finally, uttering two words that ended my world or were about to.

“Kill her.”

My entire world started spinning and I reacted instinctively, quickly grabbing onto the lapel of his jacket before he moved away. He raised his hand, sending me flying backwards right on Hannah’s blood.

He stepped forward, his eyes burning with rage, “Don’t you ever touch me again. You worthless little st.”

“What?” My voice broke, tears falling down my eyes, “Why are you doing this? Did you kill Hannah?”

He suddenly broke into a cruel laugh, “Naive little Melody. You really think I could be in love with someone like you? You are nothing but a weak little wolf.”

“Then why pretend? Why make me fall in love with you?” The words were so low that I barely even heard them.

His lips rose up in a smirk, “She never told you did she? What she truly was. How she ended up here when her father used to belong to a powerful pack.”

My eyes instinctively went to Hannah’s still body. Her lifeless eyes and all I could do was stare. What was he talking about? What did her former pack have anything to do with this in the first place? It was the modern world and no one fking cared about packs anymore.

He was still speaking but the words were hardly registering through the blood pounding in my ear. His mocking laugh cut through the haze making my attention snap back to him.

His tone was mocking. “I needed to prove myself to my people. To my father. This was my mission. You see Hannah is no ordinary girl. Or should I say was. The plan was to lure her with my good looks, get her to come with me willingly but she was too headstrong for me to warm my way in. Then I saw you, the naive best friend. You were my in and now that I have gotten what I want…”

The words trailed off, his eyes going back to Hannah’s dead body, “I have no use for you anymore.” He shook his head like he was remorseful, “I didn’t want to kill her after I extracted what I wanted from her blood. She just wouldn’t stay put so I had no choice but to put  a silver bullet in her head.”

He held up a vial with a smirk on his face, “Maybe you weren’t really her best friend if she never told you what she truly was.”

The look in his eyes darkened as he  turned to the man who had not flinched, the gun still pointed at me, “Kill her.”

This is something I should have specifically mentioned but I was too occupied with my drama. The mystical creatures most have read about in books? They existed and I was one of them.

A werewolf.

I have read in several books that your entire life flashes in front of your eyes just before you die. That was not what happened. First I heard my wolf growl in my head lunging to the surface to protect me from what was coming but she wasn’t fast enough.

The sound of the shot followed.

Then I saw the face of the man I loved. The man who had crashed into my life seven months ago, and changed everything for me. It was never real. Every word had been a lie because he wanted to use me to get to Hannah. I had allowed the virus spread too far, now the cure would be my death. His face looked the same yet so different. It was a cruel mask, his eyes gleaming with malice.

I plummeted back as the silver bullet went straight into my chest. I think I heard a scream but I wasn’t sure it came from me. My body collapsed right on Hannah’s. The blood poured out immediately, mine mixing with hers.

My wolf let out a painful howl still struggling to get to the surface. The lights were fading out from my eyes, and the only thought in my head was the line that started this story. I didn’t realize how much she meant to me until I lost her. I didn’t realize how much my life meant to me until I could feel it slowly draining away.

One last thought that crossed my mind was that I had at least kept my promise to her. That we would be together till the end of time.

Even in death.

Chapter One
Three Years Later~Mel~I stared at myself in the mirror, particularly at the scar that would always be a reminder of a time in my life when I had trusted so blindly. No matter how many times I wished, hoped on the moon goddess that my life would have ended with Hannah’s that night, it never came true.“Hey. Hurry up in there.” I snapped back to reality, blinking away the tears that had become a daily routine for the last three years. Everything went black after that moment the silver bullet went straight into me. It was meant to kill me but instead, it ended up killing my wolf so here I was, half of me lost forever and the other half broken. Nothing was the same after that. My mother sent me away to my father in another country to continue schooling. In her words it was to protect me from going down the road I was on that would end with me getting killed.Well I was almost killed. I should be dead. I wanted to be dead. The loud banging came again making me remember where I was or w

Chapter Two
~Mel~“No.”Every single head swiveled in my direction as the word left my mouth. I struggled to stand to my feet, taking in a deep breath while trying to steady the heavy pounding of my heart, I repeated, “No.”“I do not care what he did to you or whatever the fuck this is. No one is dying.”A look of surprise so faint crossed Carmine’s face that I would have missed it if I wasn’t staring dead straight into his eyes. He had gotten to his feet, turned his back on me and began to walk away after giving the death sentence. Now, his eyes were back on me. We stared at each other for a moment. I didn’t know what I was doing or where the courage had come from but I was just done. With everything. With everyone.“Melody,” Nathaniel’s faint voice filtered through the air, “Please stop.”I found myself instinctively backing away when I noticed that Carmine was working back towards me. One of his eyebrows rose, “No? You do not care?”His eyes went back to my father on the ground, then returned

Chapter Three
~Mel~In a spiral of what felt like a second, everything changed.Carmine stared at my father with so much ice in his gaze that I shivered. “Count yourself lucky as the only man to ever experience mercy by my hand.” Then, without another glance in my direction, he walked away.My hands were yanked the moment he exited the door, and I was dragged away. There was no time for anything—no goodbyes, not that I had anything genuinely to say to Nathaniel. No time to take any of my personal belongings.Time seemed to blur after that. The numbness took over as the car sped through the city. My heart pounded as we drove through iron gates, revealing a mansion that looked like something out of a gothic fairytale. Tall, imposing, with dark, ivy-covered walls—it was less a house and more a fortress. My eyes widened in awe, but there was hardly any time to process just how magnificent the place was. The man who had threatened me yanked me out of the car, dragging me up the stone steps and through t

Chapter Four
~Mel~I could still feel the remnants of fear gripping my throat, squeezing every breath out of me. My heart pounded like a drum in my chest, and I was struggling to catch my breath when his voice sliced through the air again, cold and unforgiving.“When I ask a question, I expect an answer.” Carmine’s words hit me like a slap, sharp and icy, forcing me to meet his eyes as they moved from the blood on the floor to my face. I opened my mouth, but nothing came out. My mind was still trapped in the horror of what I had just witnessed, and my body was frozen in place.“Melody,” he growled, his voice dark and low, pulling me back to the present with brutal force. “If I have to ask one more time, you will regret it.”I scrambled to my feet, wiping the tears I hadn’t even realized were streaming down my face. My entire body trembled as I tried to form the words, my voice weak and shaky. “My… my dead best friend appeared to me. She was real, and… and the blood, it kept dripping off her…”Car

Chapter Five
~Carmine~“Is she alive?”The question sliced through the room, pulling me from the documents in front of me. I knew who it was without looking up. Santos, my most trusted man. Still, I ignored him, keeping my eyes on the papers. I knew his game. He wanted to get under my skin, to push me and fortunately for him, being the closest man I trusted, he was the only one allowed to try to get a rise out of me without consequences. And then he spoke again. “I think the better question would be, how long does she have to stay alive?”That got my attention. I lifted my head slowly, eyes narrowing as they locked onto him. “Do you have anything actually important to say?”Santos didn’t answer right away. Instead, he stepped closer until he was right next to the chair opposite me. His gaze was steady, probing, before he finally asked, “Why are you keeping the girl?”His persistent questioning started to irritate me. I snapped. “Why are all your questions centered around her? Don’t you have anyth

Chapter Six
~Mel~Carmine never came. I wasn’t sure if I should be relieved or just dread the anticipation of the inevitable. If he had taken my virginity tonight, at least it wouldn’t be this looming threat hanging over my head, a constant reminder of what was to come.I sucked in a deep breath, pushing myself off the bed and walking over to the mirror. My reflection stared back at me, a stranger with eyes that were too wide, too haunted. I’d never been one for makeup, but I’d always heard that layers of it could cover up anything—physical pain, emotional scars, whatever you needed to hide from the world.I could use that right now.The bruises on my neck were no longer visible, thanks to the two women who had come in earlier. One had cleaned the blood off me, scrubbing at my skin like she could erase the memories of his hands around my throat. The blood on the floor and wall were gone too when I stepped out of the bathroom. Then the other had layered on makeup, painting over the evidence unti

Chapter Seven
~Mel~The plan was simple enough. Sneak out of the mansion, go to the party, try to have fun—or at least pretend to—sneak back in before Carmine returned, and act like none of it ever happened. After convincing me to go, Ellie dragged me to her room. The moment I stepped inside, I was overwhelmed by its vibrancy. Her space was a kaleidoscope of colors, a stark contrast to the dark, oppressive mansion. It was impossible not to feel at least a tiny bit of happiness here. The room practically radiated with Ellie’s infectious energy, the kind that made you feel like anything was possible, even if just for a little while. As I stood there, momentarily lost in the joyful atmosphere, Ellie was already rummaging through her closet, pulling out clothes and tossing them at me with an enthusiasm that was hard to resist. She seemed to have endless outfits, and though part of me was tempted to resist this little game of dress-up, I found myself giving in. Maybe it was because I’d forgotten what it

Chapter Eight
~Camine~“Do you want to talk about it?”Santos already knew the answer, so I didn’t know why he bothered asking. He should have sensed it—my wolf was practically clawing at the surface, demanding blood. Things hadn’t gone according to plan, and someone was going to pay for it.I stepped out of the car, ignoring Santos as my aura darkened further. The reflection of it mirrored back at me in the hallway windows as I made my way through the mansion. People scattered the second they caught sight of me. At least they knew better than to get in my way tonight. My feet moved with purpose toward her room. I didn’t even hesitate, shoving the door open. My wolf let out a low growl as soon as I stepped inside. She wasn’t here. Her scent was faint meaning she’d been gone for a while. My pulse pounded in my ears, the anger simmering just below the surface.Without wasting a second, I stormed out of her room, heading straight for the man I’d personally assigned to keep an eye on her. He was alrea

Chapter Nine
~Mel~My entire body was trembling with fear, and I had cried so much that I couldn’t even muster more tears. I had been walking for what felt like forever, but it had only been about fifteen minutes. Three cars had already stopped, offering me a ride. I was tempted—so tempted to just get in one of those cars and let them take me away. Deep down, I knew Carmine wouldn’t know if I accepted, but at the same time, I couldn’t shake the feeling that his eyes were still on me. His words echoed in my mind like a curse. The sting on my butt from where he’d hit me throbbed with every step, a cruel reminder of what had just happened.I was scared—so scared—but I just kept walking. That’s when I heard her. I didn’t need to turn around to know it was her. The sound of her voice had become a part of my nightmares. “I know you heard me, Mel.” Her voice was soft but cold, cutting through the silent night. I turned around, and there she was—Hannah. Covered in blood, just like the first time she’
