Daphnie
My best friend Amber and I made plans to go to an outdoor concert downtown to listen to some rising rock stars. We didn't usually go to amateur concerts, but we decided to start trying new things.
I looked in the mirror as I finished putting on my makeup and looked over my outfit one last time. I was dressed conservatively yet stylishly. My makeup was simple: medium-brown eye shadow, black mascara, and dark pink lip gloss. I wasn't a fan of dressing up fancy or wearing a lot of makeup. Also, I wouldn't say I liked exposing my body for everyone to see. That was something Amber never understood about me. Nobody did.
I heard my phone ring and took it out of my pocket. It was Amber.
"Hey."
"Hey, girl! I'm outside."
"Okay, I'm coming."
I hung up and headed towards the front door.
"Where are you going?" I heard my father say with an aggressive tone.
"Out," I said without looking at him or stopping. I wanted to leave the house as soon as possible before he could stop me; I practically ran to Amber's car.
"What's up?" Amber said as she hugged me.
"Nothing much. I've just been working. You?"
"School... Lots of studying."
"Ugh... I'm so glad I finished school."
"Enough of that, though. It's Saturday night; let's go have some fun!"
We both laughed as Amber drove off.
"What time does the concert start again?" I asked.
"Eight."
"It's six o clock right now. What are we going to do in the meantime?"
"Well, we could go shopping for a while and get something to eat since the food downtown is so expensive. What do you think?"
"Sounds like a plan. It's been a while since I've treated myself anyway."
"Great!"
Adam
I didn't want to go out that night. Heading to the mall always seemed stupid to me. Isn't that the purpose of online shopping? My best friend, Ben, kept annoying me, though. He said going to the mall would be the only way to find a woman. Honestly, there was no hope for me to find someone special. I was a man who would be forever alone. No one could ever love the cold and bitter monster I was.
As I was putting on my shoes, Ben barged into my room.
"Dude, come on. We need to get going!" He said impatiently.
"I'm sure all the girls won't go anywhere in the half-hour we're running behind schedule."
I was always early, but tonight was an exception; I wanted to delay Ben's plans as much as possible.
"Yes, but other guys will already be snatching them all up."
"Why do you even care? You have a girlfriend."
"I care because you're gonna need a wingman."
"Ben, I don't need a wingman," I said as I stood up.
"Adam," Ben put his hands on my shoulders.
"Don't touch me," I said aggressively.
"You're thirty-one years old and still single. You're doing something wrong."
"Or maybe I'm just meant to be forever alone. I have no interest in pursuing a woman, let alone a relationship."
"You might change your mind, and the only way to find out is if you go out and put effort into finding that special someone. Now, let me inspect your outfit."
I let out an aggravated sigh as Ben circled me like a shark. My hair faded, and I wore dark blue jeans, a black button-up shirt, and black loafers. I was also wearing a black leather belt and a silver watch as an "accessory. This idea was ridiculous; I'd rather be in my work clothes.
"I'm not a fan of all the black, but you look good. You need to roll your sleeves up."
Ben helped me roll up my sleeves and looked over me one last time.
"Damn, Dude! You're going to have all the ladies falling at your feet."
"I don't want a woman like that, Ben." I scoffed as I rolled my eyes.
"That's pathetic; a woman should let a man make the first move."
"You see, that's where all the ladies falling at your feet help you out. The women who don't fall at your feet but still notice you're handsome are the strong ones with dignity and are worth winning over."
"Winning over?" I was curious what Ben knew about winning a woman over.
"Yeah, women like that are high maintenance, hard to please, and don't give their hearts away easily." Ben sighed, "believe me, I tried."
"Let's get this night over with," I said as I grabbed my car keys and left my room.
"The point of tonight is to have fun, not get the night over with."
I remained silent as Ben sighed.
"Fine. Who's driving?"
"I am," I said firmly as we entered the elevator.
"Oh, alright!" Ben's attitude perked up. "I can get myself a ride home!"
"It's not like that. I don't want to wait for you to be ready to come home when I decide to leave early."
"Wow.... talk about a party pooper."
"Come on."
We walked into the garage, and I unlocked my Porsche. You might as well do "all or nothing."
Ben hopped into the back seat, and I got into the driver's seat. I decided to leave the radio off, so I could think about everything I had to do for my companies. The business had increased so much for my security company. I would need to hire more people; hurting security guards was always a long process. I had to look over their military background, check their ASVAB scores, run a criminal background check, and check their physical fitness. Not to mention, I had to put them through training. I would need Chad's help to get everything done promptly to meet the demand.
"Can we listen to music?" Ben asked.
"No."
"Please?"
"No. I like driving in silence."
"Oh, come on!"
"Hey! It's my car, and I will gladly drop you off on the expressway if you have a problem."
"Dude... That's cold."
"Did you expect my personality to change just because we're having a night out?"
"Yeah."
"Well, too bad."
I set my expectations low; I doubted I would enjoy this evening out, but part of me felt I would find something fulfilling tonight.
Maybe.
Forty-five agonizing minutes later, we finally arrived at the mall. When we walked in, there was a small crowd of people. There were many women, but they were too young, childish, or trampy looking.
What are they teaching girls nowadays?
Whatever happened to remaining conservative and modest? Why were all these girls so immature? Maybe it's just me. All these girls looked to be in their early twenties, and I was thirty-one.
God, I hope I wasn't this immature when I was twenty.
"Alright, let's take a look," Ben said. He was way too excited.
Just wait until his girlfriend finds out about his behavior.
"Seriously?"
"Yes."
"All these girls are either too young or too immature. Look at how some of them are dressed."
"What's your problem? They all look hot."
I shook my head. How on earth was this guy my best friend? I was about to turn around and walk out of the building when I felt something telling me to turn right and walk into one of the stores. I followed my instincts. Can I call it that? Whatever it was, I went along with it and walked towards the store. Ben called after me, but I ignored him, increasing my pace as I walked. As soon as I stepped into the store, I saw her.
She was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. She was young, no older than twenty-five, but I could tell she was mature. Her hair was curled and had simple highlights that almost blended with her natural hair color. She dressed conservatively. She wore a leather jacket, skinny jeans that weren't tight, and black combat boots. Her makeup was simple as well. From what I could tell, she only wore a natural-looking eye shadow and substantial dark pink lip gloss. She had light freckles; I always found freckles to be cute.
"Adam! What the hell?" Ben caught up to me. "Oh... I see."
The look on my face must have made it visible what I was feeling as I was looking at her.
"She's perfect." I didn't mean to say that out loud.
"You're right about that. I don't get it, though. With a body like that, why-"
Before he could say more, I grabbed Ben's arm and punched him in the stomach. I covered his mouth so no one could hear his shout of pain. I looked at him dead and growled, "If you ever talk about her like that again, I will knock your teeth out. Do you understand me?"
Ben nodded his head. I let go of him as he hunched over to grab his stomach. He was obviously in pain.
"I'm sorry." Ben stopped to take a deep breath. "Are you gonna go talk to her?"
"No. Not yet."
"Why?"
"I don't know. I feel strange at the thought. I don't understand why I'm feeling this way."
"Adam, it's called 'nervousness.' It's quite common to feel that way when you're about to talk to a girl you like."
"I don't like feeling this way."
"Well, the only way to get rid of the feeling is if you go up to her and talk to her."
"Not yet. I want to know a little bit more about her."
"How will you do that if you don't talk to her?"
I looked at Ben and smiled.
"Follow her."
AdamI continued to watch this beautiful woman for the rest of the time she was in the store. She only bought a few pairs of jeans and a black blouse that looked stunning on her. After checking out, she waited for her friend to finish her shopping. I laughed at how annoyed she looked as she began to sway from side to side.I wished I could approach her and say, "Hello," but this strange feeling prevented me from doing so. I didn't like feeling nervous; I wasn't used to it. I always felt confident and in control. My nervousness was accompanied by doubt and endless questions like: what kind of men was she interested in? What did she want in a man?Her friend finished checking out and walked toward her."Finally," she told her friend."Jeez, Daphnie, relax," her friend said annoyedly. So that was her name. It suited her.I continued to follow the two. They spoke about work, school, and plans for the future. It was all beneficial information, but that was information I could learn while s
Daphnie"Are you okay?" Amber looked concerned as she drove"Yeah... I'm fine." I continued to look out the window."Daphnie, I am so sorry. I shouldn't have left you alone. I should've done something when I saw those guys move toward the door.""Amber, it's not your fault; you had no idea what they were doing. For all you know, they could've been two stupid kids roaming around. The second one could've tried to hurt you; we'd both be screwed. Just thank God Adam was there.""So that's his name? It suits him.""Yeah, it does." I smiled. Amber looked at me again."I hope he gives those idiots what they deserve; he looks like he could easily beat the crap out of them.""I need to find a way to thank him.""You could ask him out." Amber smiled and looked at me, raising her eyebrows."No way," I said as my eyes grew wide. "I don't want to sound desperate."Amber shouted, "he rescued you from being assaulted! How would asking him out sound desperate?"My heart stopped as Amber swerved out o
BenI woke up to a grunting sound. I looked at my phone and saw it was five in the morning. What the hell?I looked into the hallway and saw Adam's light was on. It was common for Adam to be up so early; he always woke up before sunrise, but he was usually in his office, not doing some aggressive activity. What is he doing?I shook my head and walked over to Adam's room. I peeked inside and saw he was on the floor, doing push-ups. He was moving fast yet steadily as if he were a machine. I could see his shirt was soaked, and he was dripping sweat.I looked around the room and saw his sandbag, weights, workout mat, and gallon-sized water bottle on the floor. I was confused as Adam usually went to his obstacle course to train."What are you doing?""What does it look like?""Why? You usually go to work to train."Adam paused in the down position of a push-up and adjusted his arms so he was doing a plank."Daphnie.""Who?""The girl I met last night.""What about her? Did something happen
BenI had wanted to chill with Adam, but I wasn't sure how long he'd be gone on his brunch date. I decided to spend some time in Millennium Park. It had been a year since I was there. That's sad, considering Adam and I only live a few blocks away, but that's life when you have a job. While Adam was a businessman, I worked as an assistant to the District Attorney. It wasn't easy getting this position. While Adam was in the Marines, I attended Saint Xavier University as a Criminal Justice and Political Science major. I took classes during winter break, the May term, and the summer, so I graduated with my Bachelor's in three years. Immediately after achieving my Bachelor's degree, I went to law school. A month after graduating, I became an assistant to an attorney. We worked as a team.Adam came back a few months after I got the job. By some miracle, I balanced out taking care of Adam and working. Once Adam left for Yale, I became a court-appointed attorney, and it wasn't bad. Just a yea
AdamThe drive to where Daphnie worked was a long one. It took me forty-one minutes to get there via the I-94 expressway. It was a small building that I almost missed. I pulled into the small parking lot next to a silver Chevy pickup truck.I sat in my car, checking out the building. The side of the building was made of large windows, so I could see inside. From what I could see, the second floor was a lounge area while the first floor was more professional and modern. The building design gave the impression that it was a factory.Sitting next to the window on the first floor was a man working on his laptop. He looked tall, had dark skin, and was bald. He had a small go tee, was built, and looked like a man who didn't play. He was a little intimidating and looked like someone you would regret messing with if you dared to.Suddenly, Daphnie came walking down a set of stairs with a paper in her hands. From where I was, I could see that she was wearing a black turtleneck, blue jeans, and
Adam"I wish you'd let me pick you up," I told Daphnie over the phone as I took out the ingredients for our lunch."Come on. You shouldn't have to drive here to take me back to your place and then drive again to take me home.""Daphnie. I told you I don't mind driving, and it's not that far if I take the expressway.""Adam, I'll be fine. Would you feel better if I shared the status of my Uber with you?""Actually, yes.""Okay. I'll let you know when I'm in the car, and then I'll send you the link for my trip status.""Fine," I sighed.I didn't like that Daphnie wasn't letting me pick her up. She was one stubborn woman, almost as stubborn as me. Shortly after our call ended, I received a text from Daphnie that she was in the Uber, followed by another text with a link. I immediately clicked on the link to watch Daphnie's trip status.A roll of thunder caused me to cringe as I cut the jalapeno peppers. I looked out the window and saw a storm moving in. I was worried about Daphnie; there
BenI had forgotten what had happened the night before. I woke up not understanding why I was in pain. I opened my eyes and looked around at my surroundings. When I realized I was in the hospital, I remembered everything.Adam was sitting by the window, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees and head down. I looked at the clock and saw that it was 7:00 am."You're up early." I heard Adam say."I wish I could go back to sleep. I'm in so much pain right now.""The doctor stopped by about forty minutes ago. He said he'd stop by in an hour.""Okay. I can tough out the pain then."Adam chuckled a little. I was going to say something else when a police officer walked in."Good morning, gentlemen."He looked over at me."How are you feeling?""Like shit," I mumbled."I'm sorry to hear that.""Is that psychopath locked up?" Adam asked. A little aggression in his voice."Well, that's what I came to talk to you about.""Go on.""Bianca Alderean escaped police custody while being transport
AdamI was getting ready to go back to the hospital. I needed to sign some paperwork and go over things with Ben's doctor before he went into surgery. As I was shaving, a scar on my shoulder caught my attention. It was a scar from a bullet wound. It's a miracle that the shot didn't kill me.I turned around to see all the other scars I had. Most were on my back, but I had some on my side and leg. Some were long strips from getting whipped. Some scars were small or medium in size from getting stabbed. Some wounds were from getting burned. It's strange how I forgot about them; I suppose I was just used to them.I put the razor down and leaned over the sink. My mind was all over the place. Ben was in the hospital, and the memories from my past addiction started returning.Ben's gonna be okay.I had to stay strong for Ben; he had always been strong for me. Then there was Daphnie; I would eventually have to tell her the truth about my time in the Marines. Then there were the memories coming
Adam"Shhh... You're okay," I gently cooed as I swayed side to side with Nightingale on my shoulder. She had been crying all morning, no matter what I did. We were ready to go and waiting for Chad and Ben to pick us up.I heard the front door open, and Ben called, "Adam, it's me!""I'm in the living room," I said, hoping Ben could hear me over Nightingale's cries."What's going on?""She won't stop crying."Ben quickly came to my side and asked, "Is she sick?""No. I checked her temperature, changed her diaper, fed her, and she's still upset."The front door opened again. I expected it to be Chad telling us it was time to go; I was surprised to see Maybell walk in."Oh, no. What's wrong?" Maybell asked as she stepped into the living room."I don't know. She won't stop crying, no matter what I do."Maybell gestured for me to hand her Nightingale, and I reluctantly did so. She cautiously walked over to the couch and sat down."She knows what today is; she's sad too."I took a deep breat
AdamI sat in the back of my SUV, trying to calm my rage. We finally found the house. Alexandros has his vacation home signed under a different name; his distant cousin was the legal owner. He probably arranged that for a scenario like this, where he had to go into hiding. It was so obvious yet so challenging to figure out. What was driving me toward insanity was that we had to wait; Alexandros had gone on a brief vacation and took Nightingale with him, leaving Daphnie alone. I wanted nothing more than to break down that door and hold Daphnie in my arms, but Alexandros had a security system that would let him know if someone broke in or out. If he knew I found Daphnie, he would take off somewhere with Nightingale. I needed to make my move when they were together. As we waited, I hacked into the security cameras and would occasionally check on Daphnie. Being so close yet so far away was fueling my anger. I wanted to beat Alexandros to a pulp, crush his skull, stab him repeatedly, and w
AdamThe worst part of any mission was waiting. Alexandros had a vacation home in Pittsburg that was an hour and twenty-five minutes flight, yet I had to wait. Chad had concluded that Alexandros had left his Michigan home a few hours before I arrived. He needed time to get settled and check if I was after him. If he knew I knew his whereabouts, he would relocate Daphnie and Nightingale, making it difficult to get them back.In the meantime, Chad kept an eye on security footage in Pittsburg. At the same time, I strategized how we would get Daphnie and Nightingale back. Chad and I would only be on this mission; it was too risky to send all my men to Pittsburg, and Ace would give away our position if he barked."Sir," Chad said."What?""Security footage shows Alexandros shopping for groceries; Nightingale was with him.""What about Daphnie?""No sign of her, sir.""He knows Daphnie won't run without Nightingale; he must be keeping them separated.""If Alexandros wants a happy family, he
AdamDaphnie and I lay together on the couch. I was leaning against the corner as Daphnie lay her chest on my back so my arms could wrap around her waist. The television wasn't on, nor did we say anything; we sat in peaceful silence. I gently grabbed Daphnie's left hand and ran my thumb over her promise ring.I smiled as I gently kissed her cheek; I was so lucky to be with Daphnie, and I couldn't wait to call her my wife someday."I love you," I softly said.Daphnie giggled and said, "I love you too."I snapped out of the flashback and refocused on checking the accounts of some of Phil's benefactors. I couldn't believe the number of people who supported his work. Then again, these were people in high places, probably unaware of what happened in his clinic. I narrowed it down to a few men closely linked to the stock market and the Greek mafia. Surprisingly, few had private planes; they preferred to fly first class or business. My attention was caught when I noticed one man had bought s
AlexandrosI was foolish to think this would be easy; I paid the doctors to keep Adam Carter hospitalized for several weeks. Still, the man managed to escape and somehow found out I was the one who had taken Daphnie and Nightingale. Now I understood why so many people feared him; the rumors about 'The Devil Dog' were true.I let out a frustrated sigh. I had spent so much time preparing this home for my family, and now we would have to flee. I heard rumors of how quickly Adam Carter worked and hunted down his enemies. I knew it was a matter of time before Adam figured out our location, and I had no doubt he'd bring an army with him.We were currently in Port Huron, Michigan. I had a vacation home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where we could stay while preparations at our new Ireland home were finishing. If we left now, we could easily escape before Adam Carter could find us. My only challenge would be getting Daphnie to come with me without a fight. After her reaction toward me when she
AdamWith Ace by my side, I walked into my central hotel, ignoring everyone who greeted me. I wanted to hunt down whoever kidnapped my family as soon as possible. Diego could only do so much as this wasn't his expertise. Chad would've been able to find a lead by now and deduce where my wife and daughter were, but he wouldn't help me.I was practically on my own. When I stepped into the elevator, it couldn't move fast enough. My patience was running dry. Every moment I was without Daphnie caused the ache in my chest to worsen. I needed to find her. Without Daphnie and Nightingale, my life had no purpose.I stepped out of the elevator and walked to my office. I stopped a few feet from the door, feeling uneasy in my stomach. Ace's body tensed, and he began to growl. I took out my gun and slowly approached the door without a sound. I kicked the door open and stepped into my office to be greeted by Dr. Phil Sweetheart sitting at my desk."Hello, Adam," he casually said."Dr. Sweetheart," I
DaphnieI woke up with a headache. The pain worsened as I opened my eyes and blinked a few times to clear my blurry vision. I suddenly remembered what had happened. I quickly sat up, ignoring the throbbing pain in my head."Adam?" I called out. "Adam!""Shhh! You'll wake her up," someone said.I looked in the direction of the voice and saw Alexandros sitting in a chair, holding my daughter in his arms."Alexandros," I said in a threatening tone. "Give me my daughter.""OUR daughter," Alexandros said as if he were correcting me. "You know, I was excited when you were pregnant; I was a little worried she would look like that lousy excuse of a husband, but I see she looks just like you. Except for her eyes, we can always have that taken care of. Hopefully, doctors will figure out how to change eye color in a few years, and then she'll be perfect.""What the hell are you talking about?" I asked.Alexandros chuckled and sighed, "Daphnie, you're a smart woman; it shouldn't be difficult for
Daphnie"I'm home!" I called out as I stepped through the front door with groceries in my hands. Adam usually did the grocery shopping, but I wanted to make something special for dinner to surprise him. I walked into the kitchen and put the groceries on the island. I decided to head upstairs to check on Adam and Nightingale since Adam didn't reply.I peeked into Nightingale's room and found it to be empty. I walked down the hall to my and Adam's room and smiled at the site. Adam was sleeping on his back with one hand behind his head and the other protectively on Nightingale, who was curled up on Adam's chest. I grabbed my phone from my pocket and took a picture. After setting the image as my wallpaper, I quietly walked over to the bed. I gently kissed Adam and Nightingale on the cheek and went to start cooking. It didn't take long to prepare the pork shoulder; I started prepping to make mashed potatoes and corn once it was in the oven. After boiling the potatoes, I was startled by Ada
Daphnie"Okay, so the stage will be set up along the east wall, and our table will be to its right," Adam said as he looked over the floor layout for the gala."Will anyone be joining us?""Unfortunately, yes. The board members of my company will be sitting with us.""You invited the board members, who may be working with the FBI, to a mafia gala?""Yes.""Why?"Adam looked at me with a smile."So I can show them who's boss.""Oh, Lord. I don't want to know what you're doing.""I think you'll like it.""Whatever you say."Adam chuckled. "How are the decorations going?""Great, actually," I said as I looked at Adam. "The tablecloths will be white with a smaller gold tablecloth over them. There will be a clear vase in the center of each table with a gold ribbon wrapped around it and white carnations inside, along with the table number. The chairs will be white cushion ones with gold accents on them. The entrance and the stage will be decorated with white and gold balloons. Since everyon
