Chapter 2 - Birthday: Part 2

last update Last Updated: 2021-08-16 20:27:38

Selene woke up around noon, drenched in sweat. Once again this month she had the same nightmare - ran through the dark, sinisterly rustling forest, over dry leaves and stones that hurt her bare feet painfully. Behind, Selene heard someone's footsteps, her breathing quickened more and more, and legs slowly failed to obey - she stumbled over protruding boughs more and more often, her sweater got caught on branches, leaving threads of yarn on them, which caused holes in the material. Eventually Selene exhausted herself completely, caught her foot on something large and fell face down into the pile of leaves which caused her to groan softly from pain. Whoever was chasing Selene now grabbed her arm and rolled onto her back, so she looked at this someone's face. It was a man with ebony, mid-length hair and a long black coat. His raven black eyes drew her into their irretrievable depth like a cosmic black hole. As Selene watched him in horror, he clasped his hands together in a strange gesture, as if was going to pray, but soon a ball of fire began to grow between them. The man smiled triumphantly and threw it right at her heart, and Selene felt extremely real pain, but it did not last long, cause that's when she finally woke up.

It took a while for Selene's breathing to calm down enough for her to realize it was just a dream. Yes, she was in her room now, not in the woods, but the pain Selene felt when a fireball hit her was so real that she wondered all the time if it was really just an ordinary dream.

Finally Selene calmed down and looked aside. The alarm clock showed 11.30. It was about time to get up, especially since she made an appointment with her friends in the cafe few minutes after 12 o'clock. This time aunt did not allow anyone to come home, because some distant family was about to come... But she wondered why only now?

Selene got up and went to the mirror above the dressing table, sitting down on a chair and examining her appearance. She looked terrible - hair was completely disheveled, and face much paler than usual, making her looking like a corpse. Selene flinched at the very thought and immediately opened the wardrobe and fished out a juicy pink dress and beige sandals specially prepared for the day of her birthday. Then she went to her bathroom, which consisted of a small but modern shower tray, a washbasin, a mirror above it, a white cupboard hanging on the wall right next to it, and the toilet was in the next, smaller room. Selene started her morning routine with a cold shower, then put on a bathrobe, dried her hair thoroughly with a dryer, and brushed teeth. After leaving the bathroom, she dressed in previously prepared clothes and sat down at the dressing table, then Selene picked up the brush and carefully combed her long black hair, now shimmering silvery in the light of the California sun. She then applied a foundation to her cleansed face, mascara on the eyelashes, blue eyehadow on eyelids, pink lip gloss on lips, and additionally emphasized the eye contour with a black pencil. Prepared so carefully, she took her turquoise purse and left her room.

Selene walked slowly down the stairs and when reached the kitchen door, she immediately heard Meredith merrily bustling.

- Hello aunt.- she said with a broad smile, opening the door.

- Hello, Selene. Happy birthday, sweetheart.- aunt Meredith replied tenderly, giving her a kiss on the cheek.

- What are you preparing for my birthday today?- Selene asked bluntly, though she knew the answer.

- It is a surprise so I can not tell you, but can only promise that this evening will be unforgettable.- Meredith replied with a mysterious smile.

Well, that's the answer Selene expected. She sighed resignedly and took care of her breakfast, the toasts with strawberry jam, washing it down with orange juice. When finished eating, Selene got up, took her purse from the back of the chair, kissed her aunt goodbye on the cheek, and left the kitchen. In the hall, she checked if had the keys and the phone in her purse, then ran outside, closing the doors.

Damon was awakened by some annoying, buzzing noise, so stood up slowly, stretching lazily. He was a tall, muscular man, brown-haired, with gray eyes filled with a magnetic glow, and was surrounded by an aura of mystery that attracted women to him. His hair was cut short and he was dressed in a leather jacket and black velvet pants. Damon didn't even take them off to sleep, so didn't have to get dressed. In addition to beauty and mystery, also hid a dark secret that people did not notice - he was a demon, a completely evil creature whose main purpose was to lead people to the wrong path and bring them down, so that after death their soul would be condemned and spend eternity in the depths of Hell. Damon had lived in the Underworld for five hundred and fifty years, being one of the most powerful, not counting Alistair, the ruler of this part of Hell. He was five thousand years old and loved Damon like a son he never had, so everyone in the Underworld knew who would be his successor - sometimes it was all too obvious. Damon, aware of what awaited him, was glad, felt superior to others and looked down at them as if he was already a ruler.

He left his cave and walked towards the hustle and bustle, having no idea what might have caused such a commotion today. Slowly, Damon entered the main square of the Underworld Kingdom, which was more crowded than usual. He pushed himself to the front and noticed Alistair standing on the dais. He was a tall, broad-shouldered man with half-long ebony hair pulled back in a ponytail, dark eyes that sucked in like black holes, and was wearing a black ankle-length coat.

- What's going on here?- Damon asked the blonde-haired demon standing next to him.

- What's going on? Were you sleeping under the stone for thousand years or what?- the other was indignant.- Today the "chosen one" turns sixteen. Alistair will be looking for volunteers who will go to Earth to kill her.- he explained after a moment.

- "Of course! How could I forget something so important..."-Damon scolded himself mentally.- Alistair waited sixteen years for this day, and so did I. Finally I have a chance to complete the mission messed up then. I did not manage to get the "chosen one" before her mother sealed her and I had to kill the mother. Eh, what a wonderful thought, first I killed mother, and now I will kill the daughter..."- he smiled to his thoughts.

~~~~~~
Selene greeted her friends as she sat across from them in the cafe. The first one, named Sarah, had short, tightly curly blonde hair, green eyes, pale skin, slightly covered with freckles that made much her prettier. She was of average height, but very skinny. The other girl, Jennifer, overshadowed even Sarah with her beauty. Nature endowed her with shoulder length, brown hair, turquoise eyes, and a model figure - she was tall, slim and rounded where needed. The boys passing their table looked after her in awe.
- Wow, you're so lucky to look like that, Jen.- Selene said appreciatively.
- Well... Being popular among the boys is a little troublesome, but very pleasant.- Jennifer replied with a triumphant smile.
- Happy birthday.- Sarah interrupted, handing Selene a small package, beautifully wrapped in decorative paper and tied up with a lovely ribbon. Surely Sarah was involved in the wrapping of this gift, she has always had a talent for decorating, always choosing the right combinations.
- Oh, right, that's a gift from us. Happy 16th birthday, Selene.- Jennifer grinned.
The package contained a lovely pair of earrings with a navy blue eye and a necklace of the same color. Selene felt breathless at the sight, when unwrapped the gift.
- My God... It must have been terribly expensive.- she gasped finally.
- Eh, it wasn't that expensive, for me it is a trivial matter. Besides, we both put some money into it.- Jennifer replied easily. In fact, it was not a big expense for her, after all, she was the daughter of a bank manager.
- Jenny paid almost the full amount, I managed to collect about 20 percent, but I chose the right one, and took part in packing everything beautifully.- Sarah added.- This set is perfect and it matches the color of your eyes.- she smiled, pointing to the gift.
- It's one of the best presents I've ever got, so thoughtful. I don't even know how to thank you...- Selene said, deeply touched.
- You just have to wear it.- Jennifer said cheerfully. Sarah smiled as if in confirmation of her words.
Selene sighed and put earrings on her ears.
- That's enough for now, I don't want to show off this necklace too much.- she turned to her friends.- You really are the best friends on the whole world.- Selene shook their hands, looking at them with gratitude.
    Suddenly Jennifer's gaze went somewhere far away, soon Sarah looked in the same direction as her and literally stopped moving. Not understanding their reaction, Selene turned in the direction they were staring and in an instant, she understood their delight - two handsome men sat a couple of tables behind them. One of them was a tall, dark haired man with chocolate eyes and a muscular figure. Next to him sat a blonde of medium height, slim, with blue eyes who, compared to the dark haired one, looked kind of inconspicuous.- Tell me it's a dream...- Sarah stammered.- They're so damn sexy.- Jennifer spoke up, staring at them.Selene didn't say anything, just looked at the brunet. Suddenly she saw his face as he turned towards their table - he looked as the guy from the nightmare! Selene immediately turned to her friends, and her terrified expression surprised Sarah, who for a moment looked back from the boys.- Hello.- Selene heard a velvety voice above her. She l
    - What do you mean? I don't understand...- Selene looked at her aunt strangely.- "Who am I really? What's that supposed to mean?"- she thought sarcastically.- Eh... It may seem ridiculous to you, but... you are not human. You are a sorceress.- Meredith explained.Selene's eyes grew round, she was speechless and fell heavily on the sofa. There was silence for a moment.- In addition, you are "the chosen one"...- her aunt began speaking again, wondering how to put in words what she wanted to convey to her niece.- You are the one who is born once in a thousand years, our hope, for at the age of eighteen you will become powerful enough to defeat the demon lord Alistair. All these people who are here are wizards and witches, they came here to protect you until your destiny is fulfilled and to teach you to control the power that will soon begin to show.- she finished, watching Selene's reaction.- What kind of power? - Selene asked, not understanding.- Like all
    Damon was staring at Alistair with no little admiration and decided that would do anything to participate in this mission. He wanted his master to be pleased with him. However, Alistair was not only a ruler to him but something like a father, after all he took care of Damon who was found abandoned in the Underworld. It could not be said that Damon loved him, for such feelings were alien to him as a demon, but he felt the need to remain loyal to his guardian and king.- My dear subjects, kinsmen, friends!- Alistair finally spoke up.- Each of you probably knows what day it is today... The time finally came and the "chosen one" turns sixteen. Today, the seal placed on her by mother broke, giving us the opportunity to attack and eliminate this girl, as we did with the two previous ones. The first time it went smoothly... But a thousand years later the sorceresses did a good job of defending the "chosen one" and we had to act deceitfully, and this time we will have to do so. Certain
When Selene looked up, she saw Eleazar smiling friendly at her.- Hey.- she replied easily.Eleazar crouched down beside the armchair so that could hear her well.- I would like you to tell me something... Why back then, in the cafe, were you looking at me with such horror when I turned towards your table?- he asked in surprise.- "Oh God, he noticed that..."- it flew through Selene's head.- Eh...- she sighed.- I mean... It's kind of embarrassing.- Selene stuttered, rolling her eyes.- Go ahead.- Eleazar encouraged her with a warm smile. Only now did she realize how handsome this boy was, and his eyes were blazing with some strange light. He took her hand lightly now, waiting for an answer, and his touch made Selene shudder slightly.     Eleazar quite eagerly flirted with Selene, and she too fell under his spell. He was handsome and there was something about him that clearly attracted girls.- So you're saying that Jennifer is crazy about me?- he raised an eyebrow slightly upward.- Yeah. But honestly, who wouldn't be crazy?- Selene teased him.- And are you crazy about me?- Eleazar asked bravely, looking into her eyes.- Well, sure, a little bit.- Selene said honestly, because it was indeed true. She felt that had a thread of sympathy with this boy. From his expression, however, Selene read that it meant a little more to him than to her.- I mean, you are a great person to talk to... I feel that we will become very good friends.- she corrected hurriedly so that he would not give himself too much hope.- Friends... That's great.- Eleazar replied, clearly a bit disappointed by this word.- You're sad...- Selene remarked. She felt sorry for the boy because probably hurt his feelings now.
    The next day, Selene woke up very early. All night she dreamed of a mysterious man whom she met yesterday. Now her only dream was to see him again, talk for a while, find out his name... There were so many questions in her head. Of course, Selene knew she shouldn't be thinking of him, and certainly not in that, kind of romantic, way. He was a demon, her natural enemy. Unfortunately, Selene's heart skipped a beat at the mere memory of him, and she couldn't help it. For now, she didn't even want to wonder what would happen if aunt Margareth finds out about her feelings.Selene stretched first, then slowly dragged herself off the bed, her eyes immediately fixed on the Book of Magic that was lying down on the desk, the one she had gotten from aunt Meredith yesterday. Selene took it gently in her hands and sat on the edge of the bed, setting the bulky volume on her lap, and flipped through the book several times. Afer the fourth time she stopped at a page that showed a portrait of a
    When Damon was back in the Monroe family's garden, his heart began to beat faster. Out of nowhere, there was a passionate desire to meet this girl again inside of him. He knew she would probably kill him - after all, she was a sorceress and her job was to wipe out demons - but that didn't seem to scare Damon off. He was ready for it, if only to be able to see her again, even if it would be the last time in his life.Damon walked over the wall, hid behind the trees and then saw HER. She was walking in the garden with some other girl with red hair and a pale complexion, he sensed that she was also a sorceress. They talked freely about anything and everything, laughing out loud from time to time. His beloved looked so radiant when she smiled... and that made him happy too, mainly because he could at least observe her from a distance. Damon tried to look more closely at her while being careful not to lean out too far. If they both noticed him, he would be dead for sure. At the same
    Rita sat in silence for a moment with her eyes closed, as if she wanted to gather enough strength for what she was about to tell. Selene sat on the couch next to her, eyes never leaving Rita, waiting impatiently for what she was about to hear. Isabelle interested her very much, and she was sure that would certainly not learn anything from her. And Selene was eager to find out something more about Isabelle, to find out the reason why she was so quiet. There was certainly a reason, each such person usually hid some tragic story that caused them to close themselves off from the world. And the worst part was that people like Isabelle were rarely asked for details, because like a wounded animal, they shelter themselves with tall walls and usually avoid talking about what has hurt them. Well, unless the questioner was a psychologist and could ask about it in a very gentle way, but Selene wasn't skilled enough to do it. Therefore, she was waiting impatiently for Rita's words so that she co
At this moment one of Alistair's troops moved to attack him. Damon knew he was too weak to defend himself, so he closed his eyes and suddenly felt someone grab his hand, then as if he felt nothing for a few seconds. When Damon opened his eyes two minutes later, he was lying on the bed in the makeshift hospital, Selene was holding his hand, crying, and Maria raised her hands over his body. He clearly felt some power begin to spread over his body. Damon slowly began to regain his strength, and Selene, seeing him awake, beamed as she wiped away her tears.- How are you feeling?- she asked, her voice still apprehensive.- Okay.- Damon replied, and Selene sighed with relief.- But how did I get here? Eleazar was increasingly unable to keep up with the teleporting of the wounded, Maria and the angels also felt a slight panic - their makeshift hospital was filling up at an alarming rate, and as little as one person left it, several other wounded appeared in this place. Fatigue and impatience with the still uncertain result of the battle clearly troubled all figthing. Tess, despite the support from others and short breaks, was slowly losing strength, and her shield was starting to let through some of the stronger mental attacks. Alice also felt very tired of constantly browsing through so many, often quite complicated, minds at once. Deborah returned quickly to the battlefield, and, encouraged by victory over Salvadore, she fought as fiercely as ever.Fortunately, the battle was still remarkably even. Everyone knew that, according to the prophecy of Joan Thomson, mother of Johnathan and the great Oracle, the fate of
    July 19 finally came and that day, from the very morning, Meredith felt that the opponents were approaching. Around noon, she notified everyone:- The army will soon emerge from behind the trees, they will come from the forests to the east, I feel the very strong demon energy. There are a lot of them... More than we expected. They also took the worst scums from the Underworld with them, vampires, strigoi, trolls and other monsters, all children of the darkness.- Meredith said, staring at the forest wall.- So many minds...- Alice added, focusing hard on understanding the thoughts of the enemies.- Can you read all of their minds?- Rita asked, looking at her with concern.- I understand the thoughts of the demons and the others have far less complex minds, so I have no problem understanding the thoughts of trolls, strigoi and similar creatures. It will be worse with vampires, because some of them are "shields" and therefore can block their mind just like Tess.- Al
This is out of my mind! After all, it was possible for a single demon to do it in the past!- he gasped, giving each one of them a murderous glare.- But my lord, you don't know how many protectors are there now. Two wizards, as many as nine sorceresses, one of them is a half-angel and... It is clear that they have prepared themselves much better than before...- Salvadore tried to justify himself and his companions.- Ah, so that's the problem?     Before everyone knew it, another school year had arrived. Before it started, there were several more attacks from Salvadore, Johhan and Chris, but Selene was watched day and night. Later, even during her lessons at school, Damon was always somewhere around, ready to protect her, although he doubted that Salvadore would attack Selene in a place with a lot of people. Maybe he was getting more and more desperate, but for sure was not so stupid. No matter how powerful some demons were, they never risked exposing themselves to too many mortals at once.Jennifer and Sarah, Selene's school friends, also did not leave her side, as if they subconsciously knew something was going on, although in fact they were still blissfully ignorant.- How are you and Damon?- Jen asked excitedly.- Everything is fine... But then Johhan and Marco rose right in front of the wall and found themselves on the other side of it in no time, there they came across Salvadore and with him they quickly went to the portal that teleport to the Underworld.- They're gone, damn it!- Damon was clearly irritated, and punched the ground with all his strength.- I should have guessed they'd make this maneuver.- Marco added, guilt c
