Chapter 1 - Birthday: Part 1

last update Last Updated: 2021-08-16 20:27:08

Sunlight filtered through a thick blue curtain, illuminating a small room located in the attic. Right by the door was a large wooden desk, painted white, and a swivel chair. Under the desk was a trash can filled to the brim with some papers, soda bottles, and salty snack wrappers. On the desk there was a laptop in a silver casing, a pile of notebooks and books, and a tiny lamp. Above the desk there was a large shelf with a lot of books - from textbooks, through readings, to romances. Here and there, there were photos framed in colorful frames and many other ornaments such as jugs, figurines, etc.

There was a large wardrobe opposite the desk, and its door was decorated with baroque ornaments of flowers, angels and animals. Next to the wardrobe there was quite big, pink dressing table with a large mirror, framed in a wave-shaped frame decorated with tiny roses. There were make-up cosmetics scattered on the dressing table, and a small box, probably containing the owner's jewelry. There was a decent oak bed by the window, and a tiny bedside table right next to it, which only housed a lamp, a small alarm clock, and a telephone. The bed, on the other hand, was made of varnished wood and solidly covered with blue linen, painted with pink and purple flowers.

The room belonged to Selene Monroe, a teenage girl with long black hair, navy blue eyes, medium height and a slim figure. She was named after the Greek goddess of the moon, and it matched the color of her eyes. Selene was just sleeping on her bed and from under the duvet, which was pulled literally over the head, there were unruly black strands of hair spreading out across the pillow. Several times the girl rolled from side to side, making a moan, the sunlight was clearly disturbing her sleep. Eventually Selene gave up and opened her eyes, which were still a bit sleepy and hazy, so she rubbed them with one hand movement and rose slightly on the pillow. Out of habit, her gaze drifted to the alarm clock set on the table, which showed 9.00 o'clock.

-"God, I overslept!"- that thought flashed through Selene's mind and she immediately sprang to her feet.

As Selene nervously opened the wardrobe door, wondering why neither the alarm clock nor aunt had woken her up, she suddenly looked at the calendar. It was July 20, 2016, middle of summer holidays... And something else.

- Right, it's summer holidays....- Selene tapped her forehead lightly.- Also, today is my sixteenth birthday... I wonder what my aunt is preparing for me.- she wondered, falling back on the bed.

Exactly, what was she preparing? That was a very good question. Aunt Meredith was unpredictable but truly wonderful. She took care of Selene when her mother and father died and was like a real mother to her, Selene even called her like that when was a little girl. But aunt was never angry because of it, since even without this many people thought she was Selene's mother anyway. And all because she had the same surname - Monroe, and Meredith was her mother's sister. The sometimes funny situation came from Selene's parents being cousins - her father, Nathaniel Monroe, was the son of Namida's and Meredith's father's brother, Lucius Monroe. Mother's name was Namida Monroe. Fortunately, aunt's age refuted the idea that she was Selene's mother. Meredith was only 27, which would have meant that she had to gave birth while being 11 years old. This made the whole situation clear, and many people were touched by this story, since they all thought that someone needs to have a really good heart to take care of someone else's child. Meredith, however, did not find it anything extraordinary, after all, Selene was the daughter of her beloved sister. She considered it more of her duty as a member of the close family, which, however, turned into a pleasure.

Lying on the bed, Selene wondered what her aunt would do today for her birthday. Eventually, however, the dream crept into her mind again, interrupting those gleeful thoughts.

~~~~~~
Meredith had been bustling around the kitchen since 8 a.m. She usually got up two hours earlier because Selene was already leaving for school at that time, but now it was still a vacation time. Meredith was just squeezing orange juice and put some jam on the toasts, preparing her niece's favorite breakfast, at the same time making coffee with ham and cheese sandwiches for herself.
Meredith wasn't an ugly woman - she was of medium height, with slim and athletic body, had shoulder-length raven-black hair and hazel eyes that contrasted with pale complexion, making her the real personification of Snow White. Men were often highly interested in her, but she knew it was not necessarily because of beauty. Meredith was a sorceress, and that was what she considered to be the main lure. Meredith was born in a well-known family, which gave her a peculiar charm which no creature could resist.
All the time she thought intensely about today - her niece had sixteen birthday today. As the protection imposed on Selene by her mother was no longer working, had to find out who she was. After all, her power will for sure be released soon, and if that happened before Selene knew the truth, she might be shocked, and that couldn't be allowed to happen. Meredith only hoped her niece wouldn't react to the revelation with a hysterical scream. The world of magic, and not only, needed Selene more than ever. The struggle between good and evil, Light and Darkness, has never been so fierce as in the last few years. Everyone, including the demons, knew that something great was about to happen, that a decisive clash was about to come, which could seriously tip the tide of victory on one side. Of course, it will not end the eternal war between Light and Darkness, this conflict will last as long as the world exists, but it would give a significant advantage for one of the parties.
The Monroe clan was an old and powerful family in the magic world, owing to its "purity of blood," which meant that for generations no member of the clan had broken from the regular pattern and never associated with other being than a wizard or sorceress. Namida was her sister, two hundred years older, and Meredith loved her very much, they practically never parted. But when Nathaniel, their uncle Lucius's son, showed up, everything changed. Namida loved him so much that she was able to go against her own family, who believed that a feeling like love should never be born between such close cousins. But that didn't stop her, and even less Nathaniel. In the end, they got their way and married, and two months later, Namida became pregnant. It was then that dark clouds began to gather over them - five months before the birth date, Nathaniel was killed by a demon named Salvatore - he was clearly not given a chance to see his daughter. Namida was ready to follow in his footsteps, but the realization that she had to take care of the baby prevented her from taking this tragic step. On July 20th, year 2000, she gave birth to a baby girl and named her Selene, for on the night of her birth the full moon shone in full radiance. It turned out that her daughter was special, because she was born exactly one thousand years after the birth of the previous "chosen one". Namida was aware of this, so she put a seal on her that would break on the day Selene will turn sixteen years old. Unfortunately, Namida was attacked by a demon that was sent to kill her daughter, however, when he realized that could not attack the infant, got angry and killed the mother.
The mere mention of this story made Meredith's heart ache, as she blamed herself for not being with her sister at the time. If had been there, she would have sensed the demon's presence and would have warned Namida because Meredith had such a gift. She felt completely useless at that time... But as soon as Meredith saw her niece, she loved Selene like her own child and promised not to let her being hurt, even on a cost of her own life.
    Selene woke up around noon, drenched in sweat. Once again this month she had the same nightmare - ran through the dark, sinisterly rustling forest, over dry leaves and stones that hurt her bare feet painfully. Behind, Selene heard someone's footsteps, her breathing quickened more and more, and legs slowly failed to obey - she stumbled over protruding boughs more and more often, her sweater got caught on branches, leaving threads of yarn on them, which caused holes in the material. Eventually Selene exhausted herself completely, caught her foot on something large and fell face down into the pile of leaves which caused her to groan softly from pain. Whoever was chasing Selene now grabbed her arm and rolled onto her back, so she looked at this someone's face. It was a man with ebony, mid-length hair and a long black coat. His raven black eyes drew her into their irretrievable depth like a cosmic black hole. As Selene watched him in horror, he clasped his hands together in a strange ges
Not understanding their reaction, Selene turned in the direction they were staring and in an instant, she understood their delight - two handsome men sat a couple of tables behind them. One of them was a tall, dark haired man with chocolate eyes and a muscular figure. Next to him sat a blonde of medium height, slim, with blue eyes who, compared to the dark haired one, looked kind of inconspicuous.- Tell me it's a dream...- Sarah stammered.- They're so damn sexy.- Jennifer spoke up, staring at them.Selene didn't say anything, just looked at the brunet. Suddenly she saw his face as he turned towards their table - he looked as the guy from the nightmare! Selene immediately turned to her friends, and her terrified expression surprised Sarah, who for a moment looked back from the boys.- Hello.- Selene heard a velvety voice above her. She l
    - What do you mean? I don't understand...- Selene looked at her aunt strangely.- "Who am I really? What's that supposed to mean?"- she thought sarcastically.- Eh... It may seem ridiculous to you, but... you are not human. You are a sorceress.- Meredith explained.Selene's eyes grew round, she was speechless and fell heavily on the sofa. There was silence for a moment.- In addition, you are "the chosen one"...- her aunt began speaking again, wondering how to put in words what she wanted to convey to her niece.- You are the one who is born once in a thousand years, our hope, for at the age of eighteen you will become powerful enough to defeat the demon lord Alistair. All these people who are here are wizards and witches, they came here to protect you until your destiny is fulfilled and to teach you to control the power that will soon begin to show.- she finished, watching Selene's reaction.- What kind of power? - Selene asked, not understanding.- Like all
    Damon was staring at Alistair with no little admiration and decided that would do anything to participate in this mission. He wanted his master to be pleased with him. However, Alistair was not only a ruler to him but something like a father, after all he took care of Damon who was found abandoned in the Underworld. It could not be said that Damon loved him, for such feelings were alien to him as a demon, but he felt the need to remain loyal to his guardian and king.- My dear subjects, kinsmen, friends!- Alistair finally spoke up.- Each of you probably knows what day it is today... The time finally came and the "chosen one" turns sixteen. Today, the seal placed on her by mother broke, giving us the opportunity to attack and eliminate this girl, as we did with the two previous ones. The first time it went smoothly... But a thousand years later the sorceresses did a good job of defending the "chosen one" and we had to act deceitfully, and this time we will have to do so. Certain
But honestly, who wouldn't be crazy?- Selene teased him.- And are you crazy about me?- Eleazar asked bravely, looking into her eyes.- Well, sure, a little bit.- Selene said honestly, because it was indeed true. She felt that had a thread of sympathy with this boy. From his expression, however, Selene read that it meant a little more to him than to her.- I mean, you are a great person to talk to... That's great.- Eleazar replied, clearly a bit disappointed by this word.- You're sad...- Selene remarked. She felt sorry for the boy because probably hurt his feelings now.
    The next day, Selene woke up very early. All night she dreamed of a mysterious man whom she met yesterday. Now her only dream was to see him again, talk for a while, find out his name... There were so many questions in her head. Of course, Selene knew she shouldn't be thinking of him, and certainly not in that, kind of romantic, way. He was a demon, her natural enemy. Unfortunately, Selene's heart skipped a beat at the mere memory of him, and she couldn't help it. For now, she didn't even want to wonder what would happen if aunt Margareth finds out about her feelings.Selene stretched first, then slowly dragged herself off the bed, her eyes immediately fixed on the Book of Magic that was lying down on the desk, the one she had gotten from aunt Meredith yesterday. Selene took it gently in her hands and sat on the edge of the bed, setting the bulky volume on her lap, and flipped through the book several times. She was walking in the garden with some other girl with red hair and a pale complexion, he sensed that she was also a sorceress. He felt as if all his life energy was leaving him along with anger, and when became like a normal demon again, he fell to his knees, completely exhausted. At this moment one of Alistair's troops moved to attack him. Damon knew he was too weak to defend himself, so he closed his eyes and suddenly felt someone grab his hand, then as if he felt nothing for a few seconds. When Damon opened his eyes two minutes later, he was lying on the bed in the makeshift hospital, Selene was holding his hand, crying, and Maria raised her hands over his body. He clearly felt some power begin to spread over his body. Damon slowly began to regain his strength, and Selene, seeing him awake, beamed as she wiped away her tears.- How are you feeling?- she asked, her voice still apprehensive.- Okay.- Damon replied, and Selene sighed with relief.- But how did I get here? Eleazar was increasingly unable to keep up with the teleporting of the wounded, Maria and the angels also felt a slight panic - their makeshift hospital was filling up at an alarming rate, and as little as one person left it, several other wounded appeared in this place. Fatigue and impatience with the still uncertain result of the battle clearly troubled all figthing. Tess, despite the support from others and short breaks, was slowly losing strength, and her shield was starting to let through some of the stronger mental attacks. Alice also felt very tired of constantly browsing through so many, often quite complicated, minds at once. Deborah returned quickly to the battlefield, and, encouraged by victory over Salvadore, she fought as fiercely as ever.Fortunately, the battle was still remarkably even. Everyone knew that, according to the prophecy of Joan Thomson, mother of Johnathan and the great Oracle, the fate of
    July 19 finally came and that day, from the very morning, Meredith felt that the opponents were approaching. Around noon, she notified everyone:- The army will soon emerge from behind the trees, they will come from the forests to the east, I feel the very strong demon energy. There are a lot of them... More than we expected. They also took the worst scums from the Underworld with them, vampires, strigoi, trolls and other monsters, all children of the darkness.- Meredith said, staring at the forest wall.- So many minds...- Alice added, focusing hard on understanding the thoughts of the enemies.- Can you read all of their minds?- Rita asked, looking at her with concern.- I understand the thoughts of the demons and the others have far less complex minds, so I have no problem understanding the thoughts of trolls, strigoi and similar creatures. It will be worse with vampires, because some of them are "shields" and therefore can block their mind just like Tess.- Al
Rita gathered all members of the Spencer family - mother, father, grandmother, two sisters and another brother, Eleazar brought his thirty fellow wizards with whom he attended the school of magic, and they took their family and friends with them. Johnathan, along with Isabelle, invited his mother, five brothers and their wives, even children, who were mostly grown up and could fight demons very well.     Alistair became enormously furious each time, hearing about the next unsuccessful actions of Salvadore and his truncated gang.- If it weren't for Damon's betrayal, we'd have had it all over the head a long time ago, but now I have to struggle with such idiots like you!- Alistair shouted at Salvadore, Johhan and Chris who were just standing in front of him.- I do not understand how it is possible for almost three years, three demons at that, can not get rid of one sorceress! This is out of my mind! After all, it was possible for a single demon to do it in the past!- he gasped, giving each one of them a murderous glare.- But my lord, you don't know how many protectors are there now. Two wizards, as many as nine sorceresses, one of them is a half-angel and... It is clear that they have prepared themselves much better than before...- Salvadore tried to justify himself and his companions.- Ah, so that's the problem?     Before everyone knew it, another school year had arrived. Before it started, there were several more attacks from Salvadore, Johhan and Chris, but Selene was watched day and night. Later, even during her lessons at school, Damon was always somewhere around, ready to protect her, although he doubted that Salvadore would attack Selene in a place with a lot of people. Maybe he was getting more and more desperate, but for sure was not so stupid. No matter how powerful some demons were, they never risked exposing themselves to too many mortals at once.Jennifer and Sarah, Selene's school friends, also did not leave her side, as if they subconsciously knew something was going on, although in fact they were still blissfully ignorant.- How are you and Damon?- Jen asked excitedly.- Everything is fine... However, their good mood vanished as soon as the sorceresses appeared on the horizon.- I think we have a problem.- Chris remarked.- Time to disappear.- Johhan replied, winking at him knowingly, which meant it was time for their maneuver.First they drove all attackers to the very edge of the garden, then rushed straight into the wall, baffling the demons and sorceresses chasing them for a while, cause it looked like some kind of suicide mission. But then Johhan and Marco rose right in front of the wall and found themselves on the other side of it in no time, there they came across Salvadore and with him they quickly went to the portal that teleport to the Underworld.- They're gone, damn it!- Damon was clearly irritated, and punched the ground with all his strength.- I should have guessed they'd make this maneuver.- Marco added, guilt c
