Chapter twenty-two

She saluted her boss who acknowledged her with a wave and a nod.

“Detective Darby, please sit. What can I do for you?” He asked as she took her seat.

“I’d like to request permission to be dismissed early today, Sir.” She pleaded.

He frowned and checked his watch “It's seventeen minutes after seven. Closing time is…”

“Nine, I know. But please Sir, an emergency came up and I have to get there quickly.”

Inspector Gaines studied her quietly through the rim of his thick glasses, sat back in his chair, and closed his eyes for a while. He does that whenever he is weighing his options.

All the thinking and suspense was making Hadassah nervous as she began to impatiently tap her foot. Gaines noticed and opened his eyes.

“You seem to really be in a hurry.” He commented.

“It's really an emergency, Sir.” Hadassah answered, trying to conceal her impatience and irritation at his sluggishness.
