Chapter 2

Rosetta's POV

Graaaank.

The sound echoed through the stone corridor as the warden pulled open the cell gates. I was standing behind it, counting down to the amount of minutes I had left in this place that I've found a bit of peace in these past five years.

“Rosetta Miller, you're out.” The warden called. I looked up from my seated position before standing up to leave.

I stepped out of the place with a frown while heading towards the locker room to get changed out of my prison outfit.

Changing into a much more inviting t-shirt and jeans, I looked at my reflection in the mirror. No one would be able to recognize me anymore. I dyed my brown hair pitch black and made it shorter than it used to be. My bright look was dark and gloomy, showing the amount of experience I've had in this hell of a cell.

“I hope we never get to meet again.” I mumbled as I stepped out of the gates, into the fresh air of freedom I haven't felt in a while.

I brought out my phone, looking at the time and the latest news online as I headed towards the nearby bus stop. I wasn't expecting anyone to come pick me up so I didn't even bother to look around.

“#1- Miller Foods meal pack made from poisonous ingredients”

“#2 Justin Hilton holds press against false claims.”

I tucked my phone back in my pocket with a shrug as I walked on. I wasn't interested in whatever drama was happening to them to make them trend after each other.

As I walked on, a black car suddenly pulled up next to me, making me turn to look at the driver who had the window already down. “Is that you Rosetta?” Theodore asked, looking quite surprised that I was the one.

I stared at him blankly although recognizing him through his disguise. Probably from being recognized by those outside. “I was waiting for you to leave, but the wardens said you just left. You look different.” He said but I still did not say a word. “Mother and father want to see you and have some talks with you.”

After all these years at least they remember one thing, and that was the day I got released from prison. No one ever visited me during my sentence and I was grateful for it.

Without another word, I turned to leave but he quickly got out of the car, grabbing my hand. “Please, just this one time, Rosetta. I won't bother you with their requests after now, I promise.” He said, seeming desperate to make me follow him.

Whatever it was they had to say, at least I should listen to it just to cure my boredom till the agency cleaners finished prepping up my apartment.

His car drove into the once familiar compound. The car stopped in front of the main entrance and I didn't get out until one of the guards pulled open the door to let me out.

Walking casually into the living room, my father was seated there, looking just as he used to be. He was looking so healthy for a man whose son just ruined the entire company he's been working to build in a few years.

“You're here.” My mother's voice made me turn in the direction of the stairs where she was just descending from, looking lean and sick.

My father's attention was then drawn to me and without greeting either of them, I walked over to take my seat. “What's with the wild look?” Father asked, adjusting himself on his seat while looking at me.

“What do you want with me?” I asked, leaning back in my seat. “For people who had nothing to do with me for over five years, it's quite interesting to know you're the first set of people I get to meet after five years.”

“Don't speak like that, Rosetta. We're your family–”

“I have no family. Because if I had one, at least a simple hello would do, knowing how well Justin framed me. And oh, why would you care? I married him against your wishes anyway.” I shrugged, not hiding my irritation like I usually did.

I was finally done with all they made me put up with. My time in prison had made me realize people weren't worth my kindness at all. If I wanted to survive, I had to show them that I wasn't some easy target. Being an easy target did me no good, but landed me in prison.

“You're even more outspoken now,” my father chuckled before looking back at me. “I don't know if you've seen the news–”

“About your son ruining your company? Yes I did.” I cut him off, not bothering to look in his direction as I had my gaze fixed on my phone.

“I know this has always been what you wanted, so I was thinking maybe I should give it to you as your release gift. I'm giving you 30% shares in the company.” My father said, taking a sip from the coffee a maid served him.

“And not only that, you can have a seat at the board–”

“I am not interested.” I cut him off, pressing the final button of selling some of my stocks. “You know what, Mr Miller? You can keep your company and every dime you own. Give it to your son. Give it to your wife. I can't keep the man I loved so how would I be able to take care of that amount of shares?”

The three of them looked stunned at my response. I've always wanted something to do with my father's company since I was a child. I studied food management because of his business. I went to business school to learn how to handle business and he didn't even trust me with the least position in his company. Neither did he trust me to handle any inheritance from the company well.

I wasn't the same kind of girl they used to know. Right now, I am a bad bitch who is ready to make them all pay for ever looking down on me.

“W-what are you saying, Rosetta? You used to love the company–”

“I know you only want to use my knowledge to get out of the current predicament you're in and I appreciate the offer, but I decline.”

I stood up, stretching gently with a small smile on my face. “I don't expect to see you guys anymore since you're nothing but scum to me even if I'm a Miller. I'll pay you back someday for raising me.” I turned to leave the building.

“Don't act like an overly entitled brat, Rosetta. You have nothing and there's no one out there who would respond to your pleas for help, so just stop being proud and accept.” Theodore snapped, finally done with their nice facade to get me in.

I stopped in my tracks, chuckling gently. My chuckle became a wild laughter as I pulled my hair, turning back to look at him.

“I have nothing? You would think that, wouldn't you? You all will scrap for the remains. I will make you taste what it really feels like to be humiliated just like you all did to me.”

“You will come, you will grovel at my feet and I will step on you just like you did to me. You just watch and see!!”
