CHAPTER SEVENTY-THREE: Carter is Dead

HAZEL’S POV:

"Carter Whitlock, a multi-billionaire business mogul, was inside his helicopter when it exploded during an attempt to escape the authorities," the anchor reports.

Tears fall in my eyes, but for what reason exactly? Guilt, because I played a huge part in all of this? Or fear that Sammy may blame me for losing his father one day?

I never want Carter to die, let alone a horrible death. I just want him gone, out of our lives.

Marius anchors me into an embrace when my knees buckle, and I almost lose my footing.

"Carter's downfall is his own doing," Marius murmurs. "Don't blame yourself."

He’s right. I can't let even Carter's ghost to also haunt me. It’s my right to embrace my hard-won freedom.

As I pull back slightly, I look up at Marius. “Thank you. I feel better now.”
