Evan and I were looking through the window until mom pushed us away from the window.
“It looks serious.” I said.
“It’s none of our business.” Mom said.
Dad seemed to be outside for ages before he came back inside.
He refused to talk about anything that he and the Beta were talking about which was frustrating. I hated being left in the dark about important stuff like this.
If they’re minor little crap that we put up with at school then I couldn’t care less. But when it involved my family, I got a little more protective.
“Come on you two. It’s time for school.” Mom said.
So we grabbed our bags and we walked out of the house.
We weren’t saying anything either but when we got to the end of our road a mercedes convertible pulled up next to us and I looked over to see Ryan, the Alpha’s son, driving it. With his perfectly chiseled face, soft eyes and short brown hair.
“Want a lift?” He asked.
“Hell yeah.” I said, opening the door.
I pulled the seat forward so Evan could get in the back and I pushed it back to its right position and I sat in the front.
I leaned over and kissed Ryan and Evan started pretending to throw up.
“Suck it up loser.” I snickered.
Evan then started to mind linking me, so I sat back in my chair and Ryan started driving.
“Ask him if he knows what’s going on with dad.” Evan said through the mind link.
“No. I’m not getting him involved with this.”
“Why not? He probably knows something but doesn’t realize he knows it.” Evan said.
“Don’t fucking ask me again. I’m not asking him.” I growled.
Ryan knew that we were mind linking and he could see by the look on my face that I was getting a little upset, so he reached over to hold my hand and he pulled it up to kiss the back of my hand.
He kept holding it the whole way to school.
As soon as we got to school we walked into the building and went to our lockers while Evan went to go and find his girlfriend.
It wasn’t long before Ryan and my friends found us.
It was really hard to get any private time at school with us two because our friends were just always there.
Don’t get me wrong. I love all of our friends. But sometimes we like to spend some time alone.
Ryan’s 17 now and he’s already being tasked with Alpha duties as he prepares for the role that he’s going to eventually take over.
It’s not going to be for a few more years, but it will happen. He’s going to take over the pack and he needs to start learning as much as he can as soon as he can so he can be fully prepared when he steps up.
So, we don’t get to spend as much time together as we usually do. And that really drove me crazy. But I had my own commitments.
It sucked, but that was our life. There was nothing we could do about it and we couldn’t help who we were born to.
Both of our parents were pretty important in the pack. So it was just something that we had to find a way to get around.
We spent most of the day worried about dad and worried about what was going on in the pack after the Beta’s visit this morning.
But I tried as hard as I could not to pay much attention to school.
I actually liked school. I got straight A’s because even though it was expected of me to become a warrior, mom and dad also knew that I wanted to go to college before I took up any official role in the pack.
And that wasn’t encouraged, but if a pack member wanted to do it then no one in the pack stood in their way. They were definitely allowed to venture out to college. Just so long as they had control of their wolf.
After lunch we went to the locker rooms to get changed and as I was standing in there with one of my friends, I caught a whiff of a very familiar and unwelcome scent.
I moaned out loud and lightly hit my head on the locker.
“What’s wrong?” Tris asked.
“Hello Amberly.” Ashley said.
“Oh.” Tris said, suddenly realizing why I was moaning and hitting my own head.
“Go away Ashley.” I said.
“Why? I just want to talk.” She said. So I turned my head to see her standing there with her two little lackey’s by her side.
“I see you’ve still got your bodyguards. Oh, but that’s right. They can’t fight any better than you can.” I said.
“They’re not my bodyguards. They’re my friends.” She said.
“Right. Friends that are only allowed to speak when you tell them to.” I smirked at her.
“What the hell does Ryan see in you?” She snapped.
“My sassy wit.” I said, flicking my hair in a very exaggerated way.
But she just scoffed and walked to the other side of the lockers.
Tris looked at me, trying not to laugh.
We walked out to the field and our trainer David was already out there waiting for us.
We all paired up as usual and today was human hand to hand combat.
I didn’t team up with any of my friends because I didn’t want to hurt them and they all knew that I could. So I always teamed up with Evan.
We usually brought out the worst in each other and we were constantly trying to get each other down and we both got each other down a good amount of time.
We were probably the best partners for each other.
Plus it was fun knocking Evan on his ass in front of all the girls that seem to have the hots for him. And there were a lot.
Which is why I don’t know why he is dating that little tramp. He can do so much better than her.
But that’s not my call. It’s his life. I give him my opinion when he asks for it otherwise I just shut up about it.
When we finished our training at school I had to grab my stuff, but I kept the same clothes on and I headed to a different field on the other side of the pack.
There were a group of kids standing around waiting for me.
They were the new wolves. Kids between the ages of 12 and 14.
They have only just gotten their wolves, or they will be getting their wolves soon. And the Alpha wanted them to start training as soon as possible. Even if it’s just to protect themselves. That’s all we asked of them. Especially at this age.
Even if they don’t have their wolves yet, they still had a bit of strength. But these kids didn’t know how to control their wolves. Which is why we were focusing on gaining muscle.
Cardio and calisthenics and stuff like that.
It’s pretty much the same way humans train football players to gain muscle and push them to their limit to show them how far they can go.
I saw behind me and Tris was standing at the building with some of my other friends.
“I can’t leave now.” I mind linked.
“I know. We just wanted to know if you’re still sneaking out tonight?” Tris asked.
“Hell yeah. No one can keep me home tonight. I need a night out.” I said.
“Great. We’ll see you after your parents go to sleep.” She said.
“I’ll mind link you when I’m climbing out the window.” I said. And she nodded at me.
My friends then started walking away and I looked off to the left of me and I saw my dad’s second in command Jose, standing there with his arms crossed staring straight at me.
That guy really gave me the creeps so I turned back to the kids that I was training and I walked around to help the ones that needed help with their form.
As soon as I finished the training session with the kids, Evan met me at the field and we walked home together. Dad didn’t want either of us to have a car because he thought that was just lazy. We could walk wherever we wanted to go. Besides, the pack wasn’t that big so it wasn’t going to be a massive task to walk somewhere. When we got home I put my bag in my room and I went back to the kitchen and I finished helping mom with dinner. The three of us sat down to eat together, but dad was nowhere to be seen. “Where is he?” Evan asked, sitting at his seat. “I don’t know. He just told me that he had important business happening at the packhouse.” Mom said. “Do you know what was going on this morning? The Beta never comes to the house that early in the morning unless it’s pretty urgent.” I said. “I told you everything I know. I’m sorry. Now, stop asking and eat your dinner.” Mom said. Evan and I exchanged glances, not really believing that mom didn’t know what was going on. She k
I looked back and Ryan and Evan were trying to fight their way through the crowd, but they were trying to fight their way through the crowd. This guy was dragging me towards a side exit. So I grabbed onto a pole that was near the exit and he was pulled to a sudden stop. When he saw that I had a hold of the bar, he tried to pry my hands off of it but I threw my head back and headbutted him.His grip loosened but it didn’t let go of me, so I used my tall sharp heel and I slammed it down onto his foot and I managed to wriggle out of his grasp. He stood up straight again and tried to grab me again when I punched him in the throat and he fell backwards as I grabbed a beer bottle and I smashed it over his head. Ryan and Evan finally got to me and Ryan grabbed the guy by the collar and forced him outside that side door and Evan grabbed a hold of me to check me over. “Are you alright? Did he hurt you?” Evan asked. “No. He didn’t even throw a punch.” I said, confused. I was about to fol
As I sat there trying to register what dad just told me, a lot of questions started popping into my head. Dad looked pretty upset right now and I didn’t really blame him. If he and the Alpha have been trying to work out why that pack was watching ours, I would be pretty edgy too. “Why the hell would he be watching us? We haven’t done anything to him, have we? I can’t imagine our Alpha would be that stupid. He’s called the Devil for a reason. And why the hell would he want to kidnap me? The Alpha’s son was right there.” I said in a complete word vomit. I couldn’t help it. I had all these questions and they just started spilling out and there was nothing I could do to stop them. My mind was telling me to calm down, but my mouth just kept moving. “Amberly. I can’t tell you any more than what I’ve already told you. And you can’t tell anyone else.” Dad insisted. My whole head was reeling. I know that it was horrible of me to say that the Alpha’s son was right there, but that made more
Ryan waited for the whole class to be emptied before he went to the doorway and he waited for the school to be clear as well. He just kept us in that classroom for so long and I couldn’t argue with him. I had to do what he said. He waited until everyone was gone before he held my hand and he pulled me down the hallway and we slipped out the side door. He looked around to make sure the coast was clear and instead of going to the packhouse where the shelter was, or even the gym in the school where another shelter was, he took me towards the forest. I could hear where the fighting was happening and we were running in the opposite direction. We ran for about 10 minutes before we came to another hang out that we didn’t want our parents to know about. They were underground bunkers and we went inside but I was commanded to stay inside since there weren’t any doors on the bunkers. Ryan lit a gas lantern to give us a little light and all the crap from our last party was still here. Empt
As the shock was finally starting to wear off, I looked at Ryan who looked really concerned about me now that I knew the truth. “That doesn’t make any sense. How does he even know that I exist? What does he want with me? I’m no one special.” I said. Ryan walked towards me, slowly this time, and he reached his arms out to cup the sides of my face. “I know that it doesn’t make any sense. It doesn’t make sense to me either. That’s all that dad would tell me. He just told me that the Alpha wants you and that I had to keep you away from the battle. You would be too vulnerable there.” He said. I nodded my head in understanding. Now I know why they wanted to keep me away from the fight, but I was still in shock and confused about what was so special about me. I’ve never even seen this guy before, so how does he know that I exist?Ryan finally moved his hands down to my waist and he pulled me closer to him so he could hug me. I wrapped my arms around him as well. I was welcome to whatev
Mom and I were taken to the waiting room and Ryan got us both a cup of coffee. Alpha Matthew arrived shortly after that and he sat in a chair that was facing us. I looked around and there was no one else in the room so I leaned forward on my arms. “Was it his pack that attacked?” I asked. “The Devil’s?” He asked. “Yeah.” “I’m afraid so.” “Why does he want me?” I asked. And mom snapped her head in my direction. “How do you know that?” Mom asked. “Because I’m a fucking psychic.” I snapped at her. Now knowing that she was lying to me as well. “I don’t know why he wants you. He called me the other day. We’d been talking about an alliance. And he said that he was open to the idea. But only if I hand you over to him. I don’t even know how he knows who you are.” Alpha Matthew said. “Why would you want to start an alliance with that man? He’s literally called the Devil.” Ryan said. “You’ve seen all the trouble that we’ve been having with rogues lately. They’re getting worse. And p
Dad had been ordered to take a few days off, which he wasn’t pleased with. He was going to go crazy if he wasn’t working. But mom said that she would keep him busy. It creeped me out when she said that because I wasn’t sure what she meant and I didn’t really want to know. Evan had been in hospital for two days now and I hadn’t left at all. I wanted to be the first one that he saw when he woke up. His girlfriend had only come to see him a couple of times and stayed for a few minutes. She kept saying that it was boring hanging around the hospital if he was unconscious. So she would leave pretty quickly. She probably only came back to check on him because she knew that we wouldn’t tell her when he woke up. Which is absolutely right. I had no intention of calling that bitch. Ryan had come to see me with some fresh clothes, so I used the shower in Evan’s room and I got cleaned up and I went back into the room where Evan was sitting next to Evan’s bed. “He looks really helpless, do
I walked out of the hospital for the first time in three days and as soon as I walked out the front I saw Ryan talking to Alpha Matthew. They were a distance from the hospital so I couldn’t exactly hear what they were saying but as I got a little closer I heard them talking about the battle. “We lost 6 warriors.” Alpha Matthew said. “Don’t tell Amberly. She already thinks this battle is her fault.” Ryan said. And Alpha Matthew looked over Ryan’s shoulder. “It’s a little late.” So Ryan turned around and saw me standing there. “Are you really just going to keep everything a secret from me? You do realize that it’s impossible for secrets to be kept in wolf packs, right. The whole place is like a giant high school. Nothing stays private.” I said. “Yeah. I know. I’m just trying to protect you. You know that. I don’t want you blaming yourself for this.” He said. “It’s a little late for that.” I said. “I better leave you to it. I’ll be at the packhouse if you need me.” Alpha Matthew
