Once Shane arrived backstage of the talent show, he was surrounded by dozens of other contestants. He could see some of them biting their nails with how nervous they were, while others were laughing and chatting with one another.
Everyone had a slightly different demeanour. Shane was part of the group who were quite nervous since he saw the huge turnout of people earlier in the crowd. He just hoped that he wouldn’t make a fool of himself when he performed on stage. It wasn’t usually a problem for him to perform in front of a large audience, since he always had Andrew who would watch his back, but now he was all alone. This was a path that he had to walk on his lonesome if he wanted to become a man.“Fancy meeting you here,” a voice said. The voice sounded very familiar so Shane was pleasantly surprised when he saw Melissa calling out to him. She had a huge grin on her face as she looked at him. Shane relaxed a bit when he saw her face. There was just something about her presence that made him feel at ease.“What are you doing here? Are you also going to perform?” he asked her. Melissa blushed slightly as she nodded her head. Shane noticed her eyes avoiding his, but he didn’t think too much of it. Shane was the last person she expected to see there, so she felt kind of flustered when she noticed him. However, she scraped together some courage to walk up to him when she saw him.The guitar he had on his back was the first thing she noticed. She didn’t even know that Shane could play an instrument. It seemed like there were more to him than she thought.“Can I ask a favour of you? I know that you might be busy with your own act, but please give me advice on where you think I can improve,” Shane asked of Melissa. She was eager to hear just how good Shane was at the guitar. It was even more delightful for her, since he asked her to give feedback on his performance. Who knew that she would get her own show before the real thing started.Shane and Melissa walked to a quiet corner, while the rest of the other performers kept themselves busy. Shane sat down comfortably and took his guitar in his hands. Before he started, he asked Melissa to be as harsh in her criticism as she could be. After all, he didn’t want to make a fool of himself on stage. Melissa gave him her word that she would be impartial and objective in her criticism of his playing.Shane tuned the guitar and started to play the intro of ‘Hotel California’ by ‘The Eagles’. The song was well known, so Melissa was surprised that he chose that song specifically to play for her.His fingers flowed like water over the rocks as he caressed the strings. Just as she was lost in his playing, Shane started to sing the lyrics. His deep voice enchanted her. It felt like he held her hostage as he played and sang at the same time.Shane played flawlessly and he sang even better. When he played the guitar solo, Melissa’s eyes widened in shock. Who knew that Shane was that talented. The performance he put up for her, would even put the original artist to shame. While he was playing, Shane’s eyes were shut tightly as let the music carry him away. When he finished, he opened his eyes and saw that he was surrounded by all the contestants who were also in line to perform. All of them were shell shock. Who would have thought there was such a talented person among them.Melissa was the first one to break the awkward silence when she started clapping. At that moment she realised that Shane really was an enigma. He was someone who could exceed any expectation that she had of him. What other talent was he hiding? The other performers also joined in on the applause. Shane suddenly felt more conscious about that and blushed slightly. He really didn’t think that the other performers would join in on his and Melissa’s private show. He looked at her, and for a second, he was sure that he saw a star sparkling in her eye. Melissa quickly looked away. She didn’t want him to notice the amount of admiration she had for him.“Now let’s see you try and replicate that on the stage. However, I’m warning you, my performance is going to put you to shame,” she said resolutely. Shane was surprised to hear her say that. Who would have thought that she was that competitive. One by one, the performers were called out on stage to perform their items. Each and every single time applause rang throughout the auditorium. As his turn grew closer, Shane felt even more nervous than he did a moment earlier. He suddenly heard the announcer call out Melissa’s name. She stood up bravely and barely looked at him. However, Shane could clearly feel the confidence that she was exuding. While he didn’t bother to see the other performers’ acts, he knew that he couldn’t miss what Melissa was about to do.The whole auditorium grew quiet as they focused their gaze on Melissa. She took a deep breath while her eyes were closed. She never performed in front such a huge crowd, since she was always afraid of having so many eyes focused on her. The other reason was the fact that she didn't have to do anything too spectacular, since her sister always outclassed her in everything she tried.Right at that moment, she felt an amount of confidence that she never felt before. She didn't know where it was coming from, but she knew that she had to make the most of the moment. She grabbed the microphone tightly in her hands as she started to recite a poem she wrote a while back. She emptied her heart in front the huge crowd and she knew that the moment the performance was over, she would be stripped naked in front of them. She already made up her mind. There was no going back...“Lunar dim filling the evening skies.Just like its shape, you changed before my eyes.Dark and insignificant without the sun’s rays. How could you escape my eagle’s gaze.”Melissa didn’t stop for a second as she continued. Her voice was clear and it resonated with the audience. Shane listened attentively as she completed the poem she was presenting.“Although you appear nothing more than a spec in the night.Even then, you pierce the dark with light. To them it didn’t matter, but to me it shone so bright.Your gravity brought in the ocean’s tide.“Some say you’re a myth, some say you’re made of cheese.Caught in your embrace, weakness buckled my knees.Your presence may never light up a room, but even thenYou light my darkest nights like the brightest moon.”"How could an inconsequential existence such as mine
ever cross a mind as developed as yours. So I am just going to hide in the shadows,As your light illuminate me forever more..."When she finished her recital, there was a deafening silence that overwhelmed the crowd for a moment. Everyone of the audience members waited for a few seconds. Waited, almost as if the words were like water that needed to be absorbed completely by a sponge. The poem that she just presented was an original that she wrote roughly three months ago, right after Shane saved her when she was attacked by a group of men.
Shane was speechless when he heard the words that she said. He could tell that everything she said came from the heart and that each and every word was written with experience behind it.
Who would have ever thought that she was that talented? The audience erupted into praise and applause for her performance. Shane couldn't even stand up and applaud her. He felt like her words had such a longing feeling behind it. It resonated with him completely, because he understood what she said perfectly. It was the exact same feeling he felt whenever he thought about Maddison Grey. There were two more contestants who performed, before it was his turn to make his appearance. However, when his name was called out, Shane's legs gave way under him. He suddenly felt weak. It felt like something was keeping him back from performing on stage. He knew that he couldn't give up now. He already came that far, and after steeling his resolve, he knew that he had to see it through.
So he gritted his teeth and clenched his hand tightly around his guitar. He struggled to take a single step, but once he got going, he knew that he couldn't look back again. It was finally the day that he was going to perform the song he wrote so dearly. A song that would expose his heart to the world. It was the song that was going to make Maddy finally take notice of him.
“Come now, you should stop looking at her,” Andrew said as he looked over towards his friend who laid down with his back on the ground. Shane spit out a mouthful of blood and laughed. “I guess you can only take advantage when I am distracted. You still cannot beat me fair and square,” Shane retorted. He dusted himself off and stood up to take a better look at Andrew’s neighbour. Maddison Grey, or Maddie as people knew her, was just exiting a truck that was driven by one of the most popular boys at school. She got off and kiss Caen, on the lips. The buff boy smiled from ear to ear as he thoroughly enjoyed the kiss. “Are you still so obsessed with her? Why don’t you just tell her how you feel? You know tomorrow is the last chance you would get. You still have no idea where she is going to college. Who says you will ever run into her again after we’re done with high school?” Andrew asked while getting ready to defend himself. He knew what was coming next. Shane was upset because he saw
Shane woke up the following morning, reinvigorated for the new day. He wasn’t as worried as he should be like the other learners in his class. Everyone had a knot on their stomach, because it was the day of their results. That morning Shane wanted to go over to Andrew’s as usual, but just as he was about to leave his house, he saw Andrew walking down the street over to him. Andrew was a nervous wreck. Shane couldn’t help but feel sorry for him when he saw the dark rings under his eyes. It was understandable. Andrew’s parents were successful people and they demanded nothing less than perfection from their son. That’s why they hired a private tutor for him from a very young age. Andrew did his best so he could only hope that his results would reflect that. After all, their family name was on the line. “If I didn’t know any better, I would say it is still too early for you to cry now. We still haven’t received our results yet,” Shane said as he wanted to start some banter with his frien
Shane was still inside his room when he heard someone hooting outside the house. When he looked through the window, there was an Audi R8 standing outside. Next to the car was a young boy who was grinning from ear to ear. He had the car keys in his hand and he swung it high above his head. When he saw Shane's face through the window, he called him to come out. Shane smiled when he saw the boy. Andrew just knew how to lift his spirits. Shane rushed out and heeded his parents goodbye before he went to greet his friend. "She's quite cute, isn't she," Andrew bragged to Shane. Not to sound too impressed, Shane just responded and said: "I think she might be too good for your lousy ass." Andrew bursted out laughing. He knew he could freely brag, because Shane wasn't one who would become jealous over earthly possessions. His friendship was true and the only time Shane had genuinely showed that he was jealous of Andrew was for the two months that he and Maddie used to date in the tenth grade.
Shane and Andrew left the arcade and made their way home. The only thing they had to worry about from then onward, was if they got accepted into the university of their choices. Shane knew that he had to succeed no matter what. His family depended on him, even though they would never admit it. He jumped straight into bed that evening and went to sleep. The next few days passed by pretty uneventfully. That was until the day they got their acceptance letters to their universities. Andrew was the first one who got his. He was accepted for the biomedical engineering course at Cornell University. That was his dream and he could finally make it a reality. Shane was ecstatic when Andrew told him all that over the phone. Just as he was about to hang up, his mother called him. Shane said goodbye to Andrew and went to check his own results. His mother came to tell him that there was mail for him. The first one he opened was also an acceptance letter to Cornell University to study Engineer
Shane woke up bright and early the following morning. He knew that he shouldn't dare oversleep, since orientation was so important. He took his cellphone and called his parents, just to set their minds at ease. He also made sure to give Andrew a call to make sure that he settled in nicely at his new university. Unlike Shane, Andrew's parents rented an apartment for him, so he didn't have the luxury of sharing his room with a mate. Andrew told Shane about everything that he was missing, since according to him, Cornell was a far beter choice than Sommerset. Shane just laughed it off and told Andrew that his mind was made up. No way was he going to let go off Maddie so easily. When he hung up, Shane remembered that he still had a mission which he should never forget. If he couldn't make 60 000 dollars in the next six months, his parents' livelihood might be on the line. Shane scanned the room and to his surprise, it looked like his dorm mate still hadn't arrived. He was kind of curious
Shane was aware that the three boys were looking for a fight and he just wanted to avoid one from happening. “Do you know who you just pissed off,” one of the boys asked, with anger written all over his face. How were they expecting Shane to know who that was? It was his first day, how was he supposed to know?“I have no idea,” Shane answered. Was the girl someone important, because Shane simply had no idea. “You must be new here, so let me fill you in. The person you just insulted now is none other than Alicia Windsor, our resident queen,” the same boy responded again.‘Oh she’s the one,’ Shane thought to himself. He wondered what was going on with the university boys and their fascination with their girls. “I think you understand. Since you’re new, your punishment won’t be as harsh, but for disrespecting her, we will be satisfied with just taking your lunch,” one said as he started laughing. Shane quickly scanned around and he could notice one of the seniors who were working as
The next day was the first day that Shane attended his classes. After the orientation the previous day, he knew that he should try his best not to piss of too many people. He almost got into a fight simply because he wanted to eat his lunch. Were all students of Sommerset so sensitive? Shane arrived on campus by foot again. He enjoyed walking the distance from the dormitory. As he was walking, he saw a lot of students driving luxurious cars. It was a nice aesthetic, but Shane felt that flaunting your wealth around just to impress other students was kind of superficial. That is why he and Andrew got along so well. Andrew came from a rich family who could afford anything he set his eyes on. But he never let his wealth get to his head. Never once did he judge or treat someone else poorly just because of their financial status. Shane appreciated the fact that his friend was unapologetically sincere. As he was reminiscing about his high school days, something caught his eye. He saw a BM
Shane first went back to the dorm to freshen up. He wasn’t really into social gatherings, but if he didn’t want to be seen as an outcast in his class. He knew that the sooner he interacted with his classmates, the better. He also kept reminding himself that he was on a deadline and that he had to make sure he get his hands on some funds as soon as possible. Around quarter to seven the evening, Shane arrived at the le Chapeau, a French restaurant located in the heart of Los Angeles. It was quite a fancy place, but the prices. Shane swallowed hard as he thought about what it would cost to dine there. After a few minutes he saw a few familiar faces. It was his classmates. To Shane’s surprise, a few of them even brought along dates. He was worried for Hilton’s budget, since he thought some of the guys should be more considerate. After all, they were not the ones who were going to settle the bill. Shane was wearing casual, but even so, he still looked quite handsome. He had on a shirt,
