Chapter 7

Lisa drove me all the way back to civilization, pouting in dissatisfaction over my early departure. I had no choice but to apologize profusely.

"Next time! Next time, I promise I'll treat you to a big meal at that restaurant you love," I reassured her, finally seeing a smile creep back onto her face.

She playfully wiggled her eyebrows and hinted at me, "Corey is a good guy, you know. If there's a misunderstanding, just... sort it out in bed."

Before I could even respond, she burst into laughter and turned to leave. "Alright, I'm off to enjoy myself again. If you two get back together, make sure to let me know!"

That was the last time I saw her smile.

Even now, I regret not dragging her with me at that moment, because the next time I saw her, she was lying in a hospital bed, cold and lifeless, her body hooked up to countless tubes. She looked like a broken doll, stripped of any vitality.
