Chapter 4
DAHLIA Throughout the entire ride to the Knights Cooperation, I kept having an internal war with myself. “Was my marriage going to fall apart?” I couldn't stop worrying. I met Desmond when he was at his lowest. I could never forget that eventful day. I was driving home from work after a late night shift, when I was suddenly flagged down by a yelling man, it was Desmond. His mum was in a critical condition and needed urgent medical care. I drove them to the hospital that day and even went as far as helping pay the medical bills, having figured out he had no money. After that day, Desmond and I became really close and in less than a month, he asked me out. I brought his family out of the slums and gave them an apartment, started a business for his father, made sure his mum got the best medical care and even put his siblings who were dropped out, back into school. Then offered Desmond a place in my company. Desmond and I got closer and closer after these and eventually got married. I could never forget the day he proposed, the promises he made, our loving life after marriage. How he'd hold me. How he gets very jealous at the sight of any male near me or how he'd pamper and feed me. The misunderstanding we had today, would be the first since we got married. Desmond always lets me have my way, he respects and loves me. In fact my husband worships and adores me. Suddenly hearing that he might be cheating or perpetrating against me, made absolutely no sense. He wouldn't, after all I've done for him, after what we had been through together. I quickly shook that thought off my head, Desmond and I have done so far to suddenly end this way. “He loves me so much. He would never hurt me,” I kept telling myself. Getting to the Knights Corporations, I found my way to the reception. “I'm from DAHL Company,” I quickly introduced myself. “You're here to submit the business proposal?” She asked and I nodded. I watched her go through her system, but then a few minutes later, she looked up at me. “A lady from DAHL is already here. I believe she is with the CEO right now, “ the lady informed me. I was stunned, and confused. “Someone else?” I mumbled. At first, I wanted to just turn around and leave. But then with everything that has been happening, I couldn't just walk away without knowing who took my place. And why I was suddenly replaced without my knowledge. I contemplated on calling Desmond, but then decided against it. “Actually, I came with the other lady, but one of our files was forgotten, I had to go get it,” I lied, raising the proposal. She stared at me for a few seconds, then called a man over instructing him to lead me to the meeting location. I followed quietly and soon, he ushered me into a grand waiting area, then walked away. Seeing different faces carrying different files and seated, made me realize I was in for an intense competition. Since Knights Corporations was the biggest in the entire country, a lot of smaller companies would kill to do business with them. Taking a seat at a corner, I glanced through the people seated, looking to find the imposter, but I didn't recognize anyone. Just then, a door was pushed open and a lady walked out. “Rida groups,” she called out. “Once DAHL representative comes out, you're next,” she instructed. I took that as my cue. “Excuse me,” I rose from my seat. “I'm from DAHL. I haven't gone in yet, what DAHL representative are you talking about?” I asked. The lady stared at me like I had lost my mind, but then I maintained a poker face and stared back at her. “Excuse me,” she walked back in and soon returned with a familiar face, it was Sophia. “Dahlia, you finally came!” Sophia casually smiled the moment she saw me. “Excuse me, do I know you?” I feigned ignorance. I wasn't going to let some bitch ruin things for me. “She is not from DAHL. She is an imposter,” I pointed accusing fingers at Sophia. “Dahlia, what are you saying,” Sophia hurried over, but I took a step back. “I'm the CEO's wife. I'm here with the actual proposal, whoever that woman is, she isn't from our company,” I stood my ground. “What is going on here?!” A voice resonated and then an insanely handsome man walked out from a door I had failed to notice earlier. I was quick to recognize him, Ronan Knight. I don't think there was a single person in Dralwood that didn't know him. The CEO of the biggest company in the entire country. His face can never be found missing on the news. This was my first time seeing him up close and I must say, cameras don't do a good job showcasing his insane features. “That lady is an imposter. She definitely isn't from DAHL,” I spoke up before I could stop myself, everyone including myself was stunned at how easily I spoke. Ronan Knight's eyes met mine. For a moment, I swear, I saw something flicker in his usually cold eyes. Excitement? Surprise? Recognition? I couldn't point it out. But it was definitely one of these. “Dahlia Sterling,” he called my name, much to my surprise. “Have we met before?” I asked, It was impossible for him to know my name. “That's the name of the representative sent to us,” he added. “Oh,” I mumbled to myself. How on earth did I even think he'd know my name. “That would be me,” I shrugged, casting a pissed off Sophia a mocking glance. “Why on earth did she even come here?” “Come with me,” Ronan Knight said, then pointed at me. “And for you,” he glanced at Sophia. “See yourself out.” Walking into his office, I took my seat and placed the file on his desk. I patiently waited for him to ask for a presentation or something but then, he never uttered a word and just sat there staring at me. In less than a minute, I became very uncomfortable. “Here is the proposal,” I said, shifting uncomfortably and slowly pushing the papers towards him. He momentarily took his eyes off me, picked up the papers, glanced at the pages, pushed the papers back to me, then scoffed. “What nonsense is this? Is Knight Corporations a joke to you?” He looked up at me, the intensity of his gaze almost making me quiver. But then, knowing how well I studied the proposal and how much time I spent analyzing and improving it, made me confident. I picked up the papers. “I'll explain every phase of it, that's what I'm here for,” I replied, looking back at him. He never said another word and sat there just watching me. Sighing, I opened the papers. The content almost made me fall off my seat. “I…I what is this?” I stammered, flipping the pages. “Did you even go through your proposal before bringing it here?” Ronan Knight asked. “I…I went through this myself last night, I…I,” I was confused and almost in tears. The papers before me were nothing like what I worked on last night. The pages were scribbled like a toddler played with it and worse, most of the pages were completely blank. “I wonder why DAHL bothered sending you here. The other two representatives they sent here brought really good proposals,” Ronan spoke, rising from his seat and walking over to me. I was in shock, confused. His words added to my misery. “What other representatives?” I asked out loud. Desmond never mentioned anything about sending any other person. I had just embarrassed Sophia and she was already gone, so who the hell is he talking about? “Tony Wales. He represented DAHL's sister company, DMD. You met the other representative, Sophia Edwards….” He paused, then stood right in front of me. I was stunned. What sister company is he talking about? There was only one DAHL, Desmond never discussed opening a sub or even pursuing this proposal with it. “What the hell is going on?” I asked myself repeatedly, but then only one person had an answer to my questions, Desmond. I was still lost in thoughts, when Ronan Knight spoke again. “You have just two days, Dahlia Sterling. Bring me a better proposal…”Chapter 5 “You have just two days, Dahlia. Bring me a better proposal,” Ronan Knight solemnly declared. I just sat there, staring at him, not even a single word coming from me. I was in so much shock and confusion that I forgot I had to thank him. “You may leave,” he said, pointing at the door. I rose to my feet. “Thank you, Mr. Knight,” I managed to let out, then headed for the door. But then he called me back. “Take your proposal with you. It's of no use to me.” The instant he uttered those words, I lowered my head in shame. Never in my years of running a company have I faced an embarrassment like this, even as a rookie, something like this never happened, not even once. I retraced my step with my head bowed, picked up the files and walked out. My head was lowered as I walked from Ronan Knight's office to my car. “Dahlia!” The last voice I wanted to hear at the moment called out to me. It was Sophia. I ignored her, unlocked my car and got in, but then she stepped right i
Chapter 6“I should have sent Tony. You've lost your touch, Dahlia. How could you mess this up? You know how much this means to me. You lost a deal that could change our lives, Dahlia….fuck!” Desmond complained, taking a step away from me. My heart wrenched, the harsh reality hitting me so hard, that I almost lost my balance. I held onto the sofa, gripping it so hard, and gnashing my teeth, afraid I’d reveal my true emotions.“You know how much I was looking forward to this deal, Dahl. I sent you because I thought you’d get it, but you flopped it. The business deal was meant to change our whole life, Dahlia. How could you?” he kept complaining, walking around the house and nearly ripping his hair off.His act was so convincing that I almost found myself kneeling to apologize. But then, the fact that everything was playing out exactly the same way Sophia said it would, made me hold back. This man has changed a lot. He isn’t the man I helped up from the slums. He isn’t the man that I’v
Chapter 7 DAHLIA I drove behind Desmond from a safe distance and soon, he came to a stop in front of a hotel. I turned off my car and watched him walk into the hotel. I couldn't possibly follow him in there to avoid being discovered. So, I stayed back, never letting my eyes leave the hotel's entrance. Over 30 minutes later, he still wasn't out. I was getting hungry and was already exhausted. I haven't even brushed my teeth yet. My stomach growled, reminding me that I haven't had breakfast yet. I sighed, lowering my head on the steering wheel. “Classic that I'm finding out about all of this while pregnant,” I was nearly in tears. My pregnancy was supposed to be a thing of excitement for Desmond and I. Now, I'm not even sure. “This isn't the time to break down,” I reminded myself. Pulling myself together, I looked towards the hotel's entrance. The sight before me, made me question all I've heard and believed these few days. Outside the hotel was Desmond, walking hand in han
Chapter 8 DAHLIA “Why are they suddenly here?” Seeing them at that moment, the realization of what I've been tolerating all in the name of love for Desmond flashed on my mind. I had completely forgotten that they had a key to my home. Desmond had given it to them in the past. I never had an issue with it, because I was so focused on being a good wife and daughter in-law to them. But thinking of it now, that was so stupid of me. “Dahlia….I didn't want to come here today, but I needed some cash. Desmond didn't give me any, can you help me out?” Anita, Desmond's younger sister asked, holding my hand. Mind you, I was still standing outside the door. “I need money too, Dahlia…the allowances you send me are barely enough these days,” Frank, his brother added. “You should increase our allowances too. It's barely enough,” Gideon, Desmond's father added. “Dahlia dear…Can you take me to the hospital later, that's….” Martha was speaking, but then I cut her off, fed up and tired of being
Chapter 9DAHLIAOnce I hung up, I unlocked the door and found my way back into the living room. Martha was in the dining area serving some dishes, Anita was right next to her while a pissed off Frank and Gideon were seated on the couch, talking to each other in hushed tones. I wasn't able to grasp what they were saying, but I could swear I heard my name.“Can I have a word with you?” I called out to Martha. She paused and turned in my direction, so did every single person in the room.“You're finally out after disrespecting me!” Frank thundered. But then I wasted no time shushing him. I didn't have his time.“I'm married to your brother, not you Frank. And do not forget you're in my house, one more nonsense from you, I'll be forced to throw you out,” I didn't bother sugarcoating my words.“You!” Frank rose from his seat, but was held back by Gideon.“You don't talk that way to the men in this family!” Gideon was quick to reprimand me.“Remind me how I ended up with these people again
Chapter 10 “I'll tell you everything. Promise you'll help me gain back my freedom, please Dahlia…” “What the hell are you rambling about?” I asked, taking steps away from her to have a better view of her face. “Dahlia, please. Let's find somewhere and talk. I promise I'll clear up all of this madness,” Anita kept pleading, almost at the verge of breaking down. “You're my only hope right now, Dahlia. You have to listen to me, please,” she kept pleading. Thinking about how I might have been played, used for a fool and deceived for over five years, made me weak. Yes, Desmond is a cheat, yes, he is trying to kick me out of my company, and yes his family are greedy. I thought that was all there was to it. But now, that wasn't even all. “Come with me,” I mumbled the moment the elevator dinged. We found our way to the waiting area on the obstetrics floor. I settled down and Anita wasted no time taking a seat. “Before I say anything, Dahlia. Promise me you will set me free, please. T
DAHLIA “Dahlia, please wake up. I'm sorry for shaking you that way,” The sound of someone sobbing made my eyes flutter open. The first person that came into view was Anita, holding onto my hand and crying terribly. “What are you doing?” I mumbled, pulling my hand away from her hold. “You're finally awake,” she said upon looking at me and then she began to cry even more loudly. “I thought I lost you, Dahlia. I'm sorry for telling you those things and making you pass out,” she kept crying. “Hey, hey. I'm fine.” I tried to pacify her, but heck she just kept crying and blaming herself. In the end, I gave up and let her do her thing. “How long was I unconscious?” I asked when she finally stopped being dramatic. “Three hours, the doctor said you're stressed and starving and it's bad for your pregnancy….” “I swear Dahlia. I didn't know you're pregnant. I wouldn't have stressed you out and made you pass out if I had known. I'm so sorry,” she began crying yet again. I sighed. I never
Chapter 11 DAHLIA “What time will you be coming to the office today?” Desmond asked, curiously staring at me. I was still in my pajamas and was seated on the bed scrolling through my phone. “Maybe in the afternoon. I'm not sure yet. But I'll definitely show up,” I told him. “Oh,” he hummed, smiling. The weekend was a roller coaster for me. After being admitted to the hospital, I came back home only to find out that Martha had told everyone, including Desmond about my pregnancy. I was pissed off, but of course I pretended like I didn't mind. As for Demond’s lie about going to spend the night at his family's place, well he apologized for lying and went ahead to add that he had lied because I was being suspicious of him and his clients lately. And to put me at ease, he had to lie he was going to visit his family, so I don't worry or stress over it. Well, like expected, I wholeheartedly accepted his apology and kept acting like a doting housewife. Anita had made me realize that I
Chapter 47RONAN “Were you able to find anything?” I asked Blake. We both were at the back of the manor, talking in hushed tones. I didn't trust anyone and that was why I have very few maids at home, that was the reason I live alone. My grandfather had somehow fallen off the stairs, which was suspicious and what made it even worse is that the CCTV footage had suddenly stopped working right from the day he arrived at the manor.“I’ll be questioning everyone here at the manor….Dahlia too…”“Leave Dahlia out of this. Do not give her a reason to feel unsafe here,” I snapped.Blake nodded and then continued.“It seems like Kennedy is back. Your grandfather seems to have fallen on purpose too….” “Stop,” I hushed him.Someone seemed to be eavesdropping on our conversation. Someone dumb enough to forget about her shadow….Dahlia.Amidst my worries, a smile tugged my lips.I watched her run away, then turned to Blake.“Gather everyone here, right now….Leave Anita and Dahlia. I'll question An
Chapter 46 DAHLIA No other words were uttered between Ronan and me. I have never seen him this quiet before. The moment Blake informed him of his grandfather’s condition. He grabbed my arm, barely giving me a chance to protest. Not that I was going to protest or anything. I just let him pull me along. The entire drive back to the manor was in silence–an uncomfortable silence. But it was bearable and soon, we arrived. Blake was waiting right outside the manor. “What happened to him?” Ronan asked, rushing inside the house, I trailed behind him. “I found him lying at the bottom of the stairs. Apparently, he fell while trying to go down the stairs on his own,” Blake explained. “Where was the caregiver?” I butted in. The moment I asked that, I caught sight of her, kneeling right in the centre of the living room. “What the heck were you doing when he fell down the stairs!” Ronan roared, his demeanor intimidating and aura blazing dangerously. He looked like he could strangle the yo
Chapter 45 RONAN Stubborn, that should be Dahlia's middle name. I've never seen a lady who is as hot headed as Dahlia. This morning when Jane spilled the wine on her, it was totally an accident. At least, I can attest to that as my eyes have been on Dahlia all morning. But no, the stubborn woman thinks everyone is after her. I hated how that bastard made her sensitive and irrational sometimes. I mean, why would the caregiver target her? They were just meeting for the first time and had no ties whatsoever with each other. They have never even had a conversation before. I hated the fact that Dahlia was making her personality all about the betrayal. If she continues this way, she wouldn't be able to make any meaningful connections or relationships and it bothered me. When I pointed out her mistake and she got offended and left canceling our date, I was pissed and for once, I wanted her to choose. Choose between helping me put my grandfather at ease and whatever business she had out
Chapter 44 DAHLIA After Sophia texted me the location, I took a cab and soon, I arrived. It was a run down café in a shabby neighbourhood. I had to double check to make sure I was at the right place, and indeed I was. I was still standing outside the café, contemplating whether it was safe to just walk in, when I sighted Sophia from the café’s window, she was raising a brow at me. I sighed and walked in. Then took a seat right in front of her. “I'm glad you made it,” she smiled at me. I returned the smile too. “Please, tell me there is a special reason why you chose this place,” I mumbled, eyeing the expresso the server had just brought me cautiously. Do not blame me, I have no problem with Sophia. But I wasn't comfortable taking anything offered by anyone. “I didn't want to risk being seen by anyone,” Sophia explained. She looked down at my expresso. “You can drink that. It isn't poisoned,” she gave out a taunting smile. I chuckled. “Maybe next time. I don't feel like drin
Chapter 43 DAHLIA I felt very disappointed in Tony but I didn't dwell on it. Once I got out of the elevator. I pulled out my phone and dialled Sophia's number. The phone was still ringing when the elevator dinged. I got out. But just a step towards the exit, someone bumped into me. It was Roselle. She looked up at me, her eyes holding so much anger and resentment. I hung up, knowing she just wouldn't let me walk away without putting up a little show. “Who let you in here!” Roselle asked, coming to stand right in front of me. I smirked “The company is called DAHL, not Roselle. I should be asking you that question,” I purposely taunted her. She glared at me. “The company is indeed called DAHL but my man owns it….” “That's because your man is a filthy thief. A nobody….” Roselle laughed. “Are you angry, Dahlia? Does Desmond taking this company from you annoy you?” She flashed me a mocking smile. I understood what she was trying to do. She wanted to piss me off for whatever re
Chapter 42 DAHLIA After showering, I took my time to dress up. I wore a pink blazer over a black camisole and black pants. Then I pulled my hair up in a ponytail. To complete the look, I wore a pink stiletto and matched it with a black bag. Then headed out the room. “We're going on a date, Dahlia. Not a business meeting?” Ronan stopped me the moment I stepped out of the room. It seems he had been waiting right outside the door. “Who said I'm going on a date with you today?” “Don't….” He began but I cut him off. “We should amend the contract. I can't forfeit business just to be on a date today….Excuse me, I have somewhere important to be,” I walked around him and headed for the stairs. But then, he wasn't letting go that easily. “Go down those stairs and you'll be denied entry into this manor,” he threatened. I paused, then looked at him, smiled and went down the stairs. He didn't say any other word. I found my way down the stairs. “Grandpa, I have urgent business to atte
Chapter 41 DAHLIA That caregiver lady or whatever she is called had been giving me nasty looks the entire time I sat at the dining table. When the old man and I were joking and laughing, she just kept glaring at me. I had no business whatsoever with her, so I outrightly ignored her and simply focused on grandpa. And then it happened, she purposely spilled that wine on my body. I wanted to yell at her but then I'd look like the bad guy since she went down on her knees immediately and began apologising. I left the dining room and headed upstairs to change my clothes. In fact I was done eating, even though I had barely eaten anything. I didn't feel comfortable eating around someone who seems to hold some kind of grudge against me. I barely survived eating poisoned food and I wasn't going to take that risk again. Once I got to my room, I tried to shut the door, but then a leg shot out blocking the door from closing. I looked up, it was Ronan. He had followed me upstairs. “Why do yo
Chapter 40 RONAN When the doctor told me that Dahlia could have panic attacks or some sort of trauma from her previous marriage and all the betrayal, I never expected it to be linked to a simple word ‘marriage’ Watching her cough and act up at the mention of that one word, put me on a hot seat. I was sincerely worried and almost frightened. Trust me, these two feelings are something I thought would never be attributed to me. But because of one stubborn woman. I felt them. I gave her the medication the doctor had given me the day he came here and once she fell asleep, I stayed beside her all night long. She had a fever the entire night, I stayed awake cleaning her body and trying to regulate her temperature. I had left her in her camisole at first, but then when dawn came, her fever was suddenly gone and she had a cold. I had to make her wear something else. Getting downstairs, Dahlia took a seat at the end of the dining table, while I took mine, right next to my grandfather. Sin
Chapter 39DAHLIA “So, when are you two getting married?” Ronan's grandfather asked.I choked on my spit and began coughing. The word marriage now triggers something in me, something dark, a very bad and brooding feeling.I kept coughing till someone passed me a glass of water, Ronan. But looking up at him and imagining myself getting married to him. I felt repulsed, angry at him. I couldn't even understand what I felt. But whatever it was, it was a dangerous feeling.“Drink some water,” he patted my back and tried to hand the water over to me.I roughly brushed his hand off my back, smacked the cup off his hand and rose from my seat. My body, trembling. Maybe I was wrong a while ago, yes, the word ‘marriage’ awoke something dark in me. But it also awoke something else–fear.I found my way to the stairs, still coughing and rushed the stairs. Barely seeing what was before me. I took the stairs two at a time and just when I got to Ronan’s door which was just a door before mine. I felt
