Chapter 11

DAHLIA

“What time will you be coming to the office today?” Desmond asked, curiously staring at me.

I was still in my pajamas and was seated on the bed scrolling through my phone.

“Maybe in the afternoon. I'm not sure yet. But I'll definitely show up,” I told him.

“Oh,” he hummed, smiling.

The weekend was a roller coaster for me. After being admitted to the hospital, I came back home only to find out that Martha had told everyone, including Desmond about my pregnancy. I was pissed off, but of course I pretended like I didn't mind.

As for Demond’s lie about going to spend the night at his family's place, well he apologized for lying and went ahead to add that he had lied because I was being suspicious of him and his clients lately. And to put me at ease, he had to lie he was going to visit his family, so I don't worry or stress over it.

Well, like expected, I wholeheartedly accepted his apology and kept acting like a doting housewife.

Anita had made me realize that I

Chapter 13 DAHLIA I was in pain. My head was banging, my body was aching. It felt as if my entire body was on fire. I tried to open my eyes but the pain in my head got even worse. I groaned, holding onto my head. I tried opening my eyes again, this time I was successful but my vision was blurry. “What the heck did you do to my daughter?!” A voice I haven't heard for years suddenly sounded. It seemed distant, but close at the same time. I rubbed my hands on my eyes and gazed in the direction of the voice, like I suspected. It was my mother and she had her back turned on me. “How dare you put Dahlia in that condition. She never did anything wrong to you! I did everything you asked. I kept her out of your way, how could you do this to her!!” She yelled. I couldn't see the figure she was speaking to, but the moment he spoke, I recognized his voice. It was my father. “It couldn't be helped, Roselle wanted the company and Dahlia's husband too. I had to get them for her,” my dad stated

Chapter 14 DAHLIA “Dahlia,” he called out, his eyes held mine for a few seconds, then he looked away as some men dressed in security uniform approached him “Get this man out of here,” he pointed at Timothy on the floor. “See! I told you Dahlia. You'll get pregnant in no time, you already found someone,” Timothy glanced at me, laughing as the security dragged him out. My tears kept falling, we always think we know people, but turns out we never really do. Someone I valued, called father, helped out in his time of need, someone I prioritised betrayed me like this, in the most brutal way. It hurts, so much that I let out a scream “He'll pay! They'll all pay for this heartlessness,” I kept crying and swearing. “Let's get you inside, you're bleeding,” I heard Ronan Knight’s voice right next to me. I had been so consumed by my pain that I failed to notice him walk up to me. “What do you want from me? Why do you keep showing up and playing the hero?” I yelled at him. He looked at m

Chapter 15 DAHLIA “I did,” Ronan Knight casually said, he leaned on the wall and had his hands inside his pocket. “Excuse me?” I looked at him like he had lost his mind. “That explains why he got to you first,” Anita exclaimed. “What are you even doing here?” I turned and casted Anita a glance. Yes, she might have told me about how I was being used by Desmond and his family, but that doesn't mean she isn't part of it. I didn't trust her and definitely didn't feel comfortable with her around me. Her constant drama and cries made me even more wary of her. In fact, it wasn't just about her, I don't think I'll ever be able to trust anyone aside from myself. “Dahlia, I….I'm on your side,” Anita reached for my hand. This time, I shifted backwards, avoiding making any contact with her. “Leave,” I spoke up. “Dahlia….” She called out. “I do not want to repeat myself again, leave Anita….Every single one of you hurt me badly. You all took the one thing I want so dearly away fr

Chapter 16 DAHLIA “Desmond published it. Look, that's your name, and picture too.” “What?” I snatched the phone from her, and true to her words, that was my photo. I read through the despicable lies Desmond wrote about me. One of many being how he had caught me countless times with other men and how I'd turn him into a slave simply because I helped his family in their time of need. “What the hell is this? How dare he? What the heck is he trying to achieve with this? Hasn't he done enough?” I asked multiple questions all at once, yet I never got an answer for any. “We have a problem,” Ronan Knight's assistant called for my attention. “What is it this time?” I snapped, so pissed off, that I picked up the lamp on the side table and smashed it on the floor. “The hospital's entrance is filled with the press. It seems like your husband gave out your location,” he announced. “We can leave through the back door,” Anita suggested, and Blake nodded to it. “Why the hell will I leave thr

Chapter 17 DAHLIA “You bitch!” Desmond fisted his palm, glaring at me. But then, I kept crying even loudly. Every action displayed by him was recorded by the press and filled me with a sense of satisfaction. Soon, I was rushed back into the hospital to get my wound treated. Once everyone cleared to let the doctor do his job, I stopped screaming and silently watched him treat the rather small wound. “I can't believe you did this!” Anita rushed into the room, glaring at me. “What's with you, acting like my mum. I already told you to leave me alone, didn't I?” I glared at her. “I'm going to get Mr. Knight. You're being very unreasonable right now,” Anita retorted and with that, she walked out. I scoffed, looking down at the wound on my arm. Stabbing myself was a last minute decision, honestly. After getting my medical files from my doctor earlier, I had sneaked into the bathroom, just to injure myself a bit. I mean Desmond painted me to be the bad one and the abuser, so what ot

Chapter 18 DAHLIA “What was that Mr. Knight?” I confronted him the moment Desmond shut the door. I just couldn't understand why kept involving himself in my business. “Who are you to detect what he would do with my things?” He never said a word and simply walked closer to me, took my hand and began to inspect my treated wound. “What the hell is wrong with you!” I pushed him away from me, but then he didn't budge. He kept looking down at my wounds, his face twisting in distaste. “I just asked you a question, Mr. Knight. What do you want from me. Why do you keep involving yourself in my business? Why are you always appearing right next to me….” “I leave you for just one minute, Dahlia and you end up in the hospital. You hurt yourself every single time I take my eyes away from you, even for just a second. Why does trouble follow you around?” He seemed mad and looked up at me, staring so intensely at me that I could feel his stare right inside my soul.” “Well…I don't nee

Chapter 19 DAHLIA “Let's go in,” he gestured for me to return back to his side. I clenched my fist, this was all Desmond's fault, if not for his stupidity, I would have been in the comfort of my home and not here with a man I know nothing about his intentions for me. I dragged my foot back to where he stood. “Let me borrow some money from you. I'll pay back later,” I looked up at him. He didn't utter a word and simply walked away. I stood watching him leave, but then he turned around. “Aren't you coming?” He raised an eyebrow. I rolled my eyes and dragged myself over to him. We never uttered a word to each other and simply approached the huge manor. My face held no emotions, but deep down I was grateful to him. Even though I didn't know what he wanted from me, I was still thankful that he showed up for me when everyone else didn't. If not for him, I would be on the streets rights now. The moment we got to the entrance, two grand doors were pushed open. What welcomed me was

Chapter 20 DAHLIA My eyes bulged out at the revelation. “What?” “Push your eyes back in, this is just the beginning,” she made a lame joke attempt. “The truth is Desmond believes he would have a better future with Roselle than you. The entire time you were working hard and securing business deals, I mean back when you overworked yourself so much that you couldn't get pregnant, Desmond was with Roselle, planning a future with her. Every single penny you made for the company was transfered to DMD, a company Desmond opened under Roselle's name...Roselle handles it.” My hands were trembling and my ears was hurting from hearing how much of a fool I've been. “After you took your long break from the company. Desmond transferred most of the employees to DMD, and fired the ones loyal to you, then brought in new employees. I swore my loyalty to him and that was why he let me stay….I almost forgot to add that he fired the former manager and made your dad the manager…” “What the heck? All

Chapter 49 DAHLIA I found it hard to sleep the entire night. I kept tossing and turning. I was very uncomfortable. At one point, I wanted to just abandon everything and leave. Afterall, I would be getting the $5 million from Desmond soon. I could start something for myself with it. I was strong and independent. I would be able to do it. And so, I rose from the bed and sneaked to the door. But to my dismay. It was locked. Ronan had locked me up in his room. I clenched my fist and went back to bed. I spent the entire night cursing and turning, by morning I had dark circles, but I had made my decision. I got out of bed, brushed, showered and got dressed. Then sat on the bed, patiently waiting for Ronan. I knew he would show up soon. Less than five minutes later, the door was unlocked. Ronan walked in, a plate of oatmeal in his hand. “Eat,” he handed me the plate. I eyed the food cautiously. “I'm good,” I pushed it back to him. “I'll let you successfully trick me, Ronan. The marr

Chapter 48 DAHLIA I thought Ronan noticed me eavesdropping on them. But thankfully he didn't. The moment he tried to find out who was listening, I retraced my steps and once I was out of ear shot. I ran back into the manor house. I was seated on the bed, trying to catch my breath, when he walked in. He looked pissed and didn't even knock. I thought I had been caught after all but he was surprisingly here for an entirely different reason. “I have a proposal for you, Dahlia. One that will change your life forever….” I stared at him for a few seconds, wondering what he was up to this time around. He wasn't going to make me sign another contract again? “What proposal?” I let up, rising to my feet and standing right in front of him. “Marry me.” His words struck me like thunderbolts. That word. That one word that ruined my life ‘marriage’ My breathing hitched. I panicked. I had no control over it, but it seemed like that one word was sucking life out of me. I staggered backwards,

Chapter 47 RONAN “Were you able to find anything?” I asked Blake. We both were at the back of the manor, talking in hushed tones. I didn't trust anyone and that was why I have very few maids at home, that was the reason I live alone. My grandfather had somehow fallen off the stairs, which was suspicious and what made it even worse is that the CCTV footage had suddenly stopped working right from the day he arrived at the manor. “I’ll be questioning everyone here at the manor….Dahlia too…” “Leave Dahlia out of this. Do not give her a reason to feel unsafe here,” I snapped. Blake nodded and then continued. “It seems like Kennedy is back. Your grandfather seems to have fallen on purpose too….” “Stop,” I hushed him. Someone seemed to be eavesdropping on our conversation. Someone dumb enough to forget about her shadow….Dahlia. Amidst my worries, a smile tugged my lips. I watched her run away, then turned to Blake. “Gather everyone here, right now….Leave Anita and Dahlia. I'll

Chapter 46 DAHLIA No other words were uttered between Ronan and me. I have never seen him this quiet before. The moment Blake informed him of his grandfather’s condition. He grabbed my arm, barely giving me a chance to protest. Not that I was going to protest or anything. I just let him pull me along. The entire drive back to the manor was in silence–an uncomfortable silence. But it was bearable and soon, we arrived. Blake was waiting right outside the manor. “What happened to him?” Ronan asked, rushing inside the house, I trailed behind him. “I found him lying at the bottom of the stairs. Apparently, he fell while trying to go down the stairs on his own,” Blake explained. “Where was the caregiver?” I butted in. The moment I asked that, I caught sight of her, kneeling right in the centre of the living room. “What the heck were you doing when he fell down the stairs!” Ronan roared, his demeanor intimidating and aura blazing dangerously. He looked like he could strangle the yo

Chapter 45 RONAN Stubborn, that should be Dahlia's middle name. I've never seen a lady who is as hot headed as Dahlia. This morning when Jane spilled the wine on her, it was totally an accident. At least, I can attest to that as my eyes have been on Dahlia all morning. But no, the stubborn woman thinks everyone is after her. I hated how that bastard made her sensitive and irrational sometimes. I mean, why would the caregiver target her? They were just meeting for the first time and had no ties whatsoever with each other. They have never even had a conversation before. I hated the fact that Dahlia was making her personality all about the betrayal. If she continues this way, she wouldn't be able to make any meaningful connections or relationships and it bothered me. When I pointed out her mistake and she got offended and left canceling our date, I was pissed and for once, I wanted her to choose. Choose between helping me put my grandfather at ease and whatever business she had out

Chapter 44 DAHLIA After Sophia texted me the location, I took a cab and soon, I arrived. It was a run down café in a shabby neighbourhood. I had to double check to make sure I was at the right place, and indeed I was. I was still standing outside the café, contemplating whether it was safe to just walk in, when I sighted Sophia from the café’s window, she was raising a brow at me. I sighed and walked in. Then took a seat right in front of her. “I'm glad you made it,” she smiled at me. I returned the smile too. “Please, tell me there is a special reason why you chose this place,” I mumbled, eyeing the expresso the server had just brought me cautiously. Do not blame me, I have no problem with Sophia. But I wasn't comfortable taking anything offered by anyone. “I didn't want to risk being seen by anyone,” Sophia explained. She looked down at my expresso. “You can drink that. It isn't poisoned,” she gave out a taunting smile. I chuckled. “Maybe next time. I don't feel like drin

Chapter 43 DAHLIA I felt very disappointed in Tony but I didn't dwell on it. Once I got out of the elevator. I pulled out my phone and dialled Sophia's number. The phone was still ringing when the elevator dinged. I got out. But just a step towards the exit, someone bumped into me. It was Roselle. She looked up at me, her eyes holding so much anger and resentment. I hung up, knowing she just wouldn't let me walk away without putting up a little show. “Who let you in here!” Roselle asked, coming to stand right in front of me. I smirked “The company is called DAHL, not Roselle. I should be asking you that question,” I purposely taunted her. She glared at me. “The company is indeed called DAHL but my man owns it….” “That's because your man is a filthy thief. A nobody….” Roselle laughed. “Are you angry, Dahlia? Does Desmond taking this company from you annoy you?” She flashed me a mocking smile. I understood what she was trying to do. She wanted to piss me off for whatever re

Chapter 42 DAHLIA After showering, I took my time to dress up. I wore a pink blazer over a black camisole and black pants. Then I pulled my hair up in a ponytail. To complete the look, I wore a pink stiletto and matched it with a black bag. Then headed out the room. “We're going on a date, Dahlia. Not a business meeting?” Ronan stopped me the moment I stepped out of the room. It seems he had been waiting right outside the door. “Who said I'm going on a date with you today?” “Don't….” He began but I cut him off. “We should amend the contract. I can't forfeit business just to be on a date today….Excuse me, I have somewhere important to be,” I walked around him and headed for the stairs. But then, he wasn't letting go that easily. “Go down those stairs and you'll be denied entry into this manor,” he threatened. I paused, then looked at him, smiled and went down the stairs. He didn't say any other word. I found my way down the stairs. “Grandpa, I have urgent business to atte

Chapter 41 DAHLIA That caregiver lady or whatever she is called had been giving me nasty looks the entire time I sat at the dining table. When the old man and I were joking and laughing, she just kept glaring at me. I had no business whatsoever with her, so I outrightly ignored her and simply focused on grandpa. And then it happened, she purposely spilled that wine on my body. I wanted to yell at her but then I'd look like the bad guy since she went down on her knees immediately and began apologising. I left the dining room and headed upstairs to change my clothes. In fact I was done eating, even though I had barely eaten anything. I didn't feel comfortable eating around someone who seems to hold some kind of grudge against me. I barely survived eating poisoned food and I wasn't going to take that risk again. Once I got to my room, I tried to shut the door, but then a leg shot out blocking the door from closing. I looked up, it was Ronan. He had followed me upstairs. “Why do yo
