Chapter 6
“I should have sent Tony. You've lost your touch, Dahlia. How could you mess this up? You know how much this means to me. You lost a deal that could change our lives, Dahlia….fuck!” Desmond complained, taking a step away from me. My heart wrenched, the harsh reality hitting me so hard, that I almost lost my balance. I held onto the sofa, gripping it so hard, and gnashing my teeth, afraid I’d reveal my true emotions. “You know how much I was looking forward to this deal, Dahl. I sent you because I thought you’d get it, but you flopped it. The business deal was meant to change our whole life, Dahlia. How could you?” he kept complaining, walking around the house and nearly ripping his hair off. His act was so convincing that I almost found myself kneeling to apologize. But then, the fact that everything was playing out exactly the same way Sophia said it would, made me hold back. This man has changed a lot. He isn’t the man I helped up from the slums. He isn’t the man that I’ve loved for years. The man before me was an enemy, perpetrating against me and planning to take charge of my hard work. “I'm going to bed,” I mumbled, not caring to know whether he heard me. I picked up my handbag and headed into the room, not sparing him a glance. I couldn't shower, I was just too exhausted, too disappointed and shocked by the unexpected revelation. This was the last thing I expected. In fact, if anyone had told me Desmond would suddenly turn against me one day, I'd probably call the person a mad man. Lying there on the bed, Sophia's words about Desmond being a chronic womanizer flashed my mind. This time I didn't doubt it. Right there and then, I made a resolution. When morning came, I woke up with Desmond's arms around me. Disgusted would be an understatement of the feelings that rushed through me. This man whose entire family depends on me, I send his parents monthly allowances to keep them going, I pay his siblings’ tuition fees and now what? He chose to betray me in the worst way. “You're finally awake,” Desmond smiled down at me. His smile annoyed and pissed me off so much that I instinctively moved away from him and got off the bed. He paused and gazed at me “I'm sorry about how I reacted last night. I just never expected you to fail to get the deal,” he apologized, then tried to pull me into his arms. “You don't have to apologize, Desmond. Everything you said last night was simply the truth. I’ve lost my touch. I’ve lost myself.” I pulled my arms away from him. “I'll be returning to the company on Monday….” I was still speaking, when he cut me off. “I've already apologized, Dahl. There is no reason for you to get back to work,” Desmond instantly protested. I paused, then stared at him. “I…I…” he stammered. “Don't get me wrong. I'm just worried you'd overwork again. You're still trying to get pregnant, Dahl. I don't think it's wise for you to return now,” he stood up, walked over to where I stood and held my hand. “I only have your best interest in mind. I love you, Dahl. I want the best for you. I know how much you long to have a child of your own, Dahl. Returning to the company will mean more responsibilities, it will mean stressing yourself out again. I don’t want you to go through that again,” he continued, looking at me with so much care in his eyes that I almost found myself falling for it. “I've made up my mind. I'll return to work on Monday. Don't worry, I won't overwork myself and will take everything very easy,” I calmly assured him even though a storm was brewing within me. I was going to start work, find out what happened to my employees, find his mistress, disgrace them both and claim back what was mine. “But, Dahl, you….” Desmond tried protesting again “It seems like you don't want me at the company….Are you hiding anything from me?” I confronted him. For a moment, guilt and surprise flashed in his eyes. But then they disappeared like they never appeared in the first place. “What could I possibly be hiding from you!” He got defensive. “I was just worried about you. You know what, I'll just prepare a place for you in the office. You can come back to work…” “That's more like it,” I thought, finally walking out the door. But just before I walked out the door, I paused and turned to look at him. “I want Tony's position.” “What!” He let out before he could stop himself. This would be the first time Desmond would raise his voice at me. I paused, looking at him. His face held anger and he stared at me, his eyes blazing. “I can't fire Tony,” he said, shutting his eyes, probably to subdue his annoyance. “I'm not asking you to fire him. I want Tony's position. You can give him his previous position…” “There is someone else occupying that position now, Dahlia. You can't expect me to suddenly fire them….” The more he spoke, the more annoyed I became. “I don't care how you do it, Desmond. I want Tony's position. Once I step foot into the company on Monday, I'm taking his office…” I declared, then walked away, not caring to know what he had to say. I walked into the living room with my fist clenched. I was beyond disappointed, annoyed and frustrated. Just then, the sound of keys rattling sounded from the bedroom. The car keys I left in my handbag instantly came to mind. “I can't let Desmond know about Sophia's proposal until I figure out this entire madness…” With this thought in mind, I instantly raced to the bedroom, but then just outside the door, I heard Desmond talking to someone on the phone. “Did Dahlia see you at the Knights yesterday?” He asked. I halted and hid myself in a corner listening to his conversation with the person. I couldn't hear what the person said and then Desmond spoke again. “Something's off, she is acting out. Meet me at our usual spot in ten minutes.” The sound of his footsteps approaching the door, made me quietly hurry back to the living room. I sat there looking down at my phone lock screen, lost in thought. “I have an urgent meeting right now, Dahl. I'll be back soon,” Desmond suddenly approached me and announced. “It's the weekend, Desmond. What sort of client wants to meet over the weekend?” I spewed before I could stop myself. He seemed taken aback by my words. He paused for a few seconds, staring at me and trying to read the expression on my face. But then, I refused to let my face reflect my rage. “Dahlia, are you still suspicious about me? Do you still think I'm cheating on you?” He asked, his head bowed. I didn't utter a word. “You know what. You can come with me, then you'd know I'm really meeting a client,” he declared. My eyes widened in surprise. I didn't expect him to pull this move. “Go meet your client, Desmond. I'll just stay here,” I sighed, looking away. “I love you, Dahlia. You're the only woman in my heart, never doubt or forget that.” He approached me, kissed my cheeks and walked away. The moment he walked out the door, I hurried to the bedroom, got my car keys. Thankfully, I was still in my work clothes from yesterday, so I stood by the window and watched him drive off, then I hurried over to the garage. “Tony and Sophia were the two people at Knights Corporations yesterday. I have to get to the root of this.”Chapter 7 DAHLIA I drove behind Desmond from a safe distance and soon, he came to a stop in front of a hotel. I turned off my car and watched him walk into the hotel. I couldn't possibly follow him in there to avoid being discovered. So, I stayed back, never letting my eyes leave the hotel's entrance. Over 30 minutes later, he still wasn't out. I was getting hungry and was already exhausted. I haven't even brushed my teeth yet. My stomach growled, reminding me that I haven't had breakfast yet. I sighed, lowering my head on the steering wheel. “Classic that I'm finding out about all of this while pregnant,” I was nearly in tears. My pregnancy was supposed to be a thing of excitement for Desmond and I. Now, I'm not even sure. “This isn't the time to break down,” I reminded myself. Pulling myself together, I looked towards the hotel's entrance. The sight before me, made me question all I've heard and believed these few days. Outside the hotel was Desmond, walking hand in han
Chapter 8 DAHLIA “Why are they suddenly here?” Seeing them at that moment, the realization of what I've been tolerating all in the name of love for Desmond flashed on my mind. I had completely forgotten that they had a key to my home. Desmond had given it to them in the past. I never had an issue with it, because I was so focused on being a good wife and daughter in-law to them. But thinking of it now, that was so stupid of me. “Dahlia….I didn't want to come here today, but I needed some cash. Desmond didn't give me any, can you help me out?” Anita, Desmond's younger sister asked, holding my hand. Mind you, I was still standing outside the door. “I need money too, Dahlia…the allowances you send me are barely enough these days,” Frank, his brother added. “You should increase our allowances too. It's barely enough,” Gideon, Desmond's father added. “Dahlia dear…Can you take me to the hospital later, that's….” Martha was speaking, but then I cut her off, fed up and tired of being
Chapter 9DAHLIAOnce I hung up, I unlocked the door and found my way back into the living room. Martha was in the dining area serving some dishes, Anita was right next to her while a pissed off Frank and Gideon were seated on the couch, talking to each other in hushed tones. I wasn't able to grasp what they were saying, but I could swear I heard my name.“Can I have a word with you?” I called out to Martha. She paused and turned in my direction, so did every single person in the room.“You're finally out after disrespecting me!” Frank thundered. But then I wasted no time shushing him. I didn't have his time.“I'm married to your brother, not you Frank. And do not forget you're in my house, one more nonsense from you, I'll be forced to throw you out,” I didn't bother sugarcoating my words.“You!” Frank rose from his seat, but was held back by Gideon.“You don't talk that way to the men in this family!” Gideon was quick to reprimand me.“Remind me how I ended up with these people again
Chapter 10 “I'll tell you everything. Promise you'll help me gain back my freedom, please Dahlia…” “What the hell are you rambling about?” I asked, taking steps away from her to have a better view of her face. “Dahlia, please. Let's find somewhere and talk. I promise I'll clear up all of this madness,” Anita kept pleading, almost at the verge of breaking down. “You're my only hope right now, Dahlia. You have to listen to me, please,” she kept pleading. Thinking about how I might have been played, used for a fool and deceived for over five years, made me weak. Yes, Desmond is a cheat, yes, he is trying to kick me out of my company, and yes his family are greedy. I thought that was all there was to it. But now, that wasn't even all. “Come with me,” I mumbled the moment the elevator dinged. We found our way to the waiting area on the obstetrics floor. I settled down and Anita wasted no time taking a seat. “Before I say anything, Dahlia. Promise me you will set me free, please. T
DAHLIA “Dahlia, please wake up. I'm sorry for shaking you that way,” The sound of someone sobbing made my eyes flutter open. The first person that came into view was Anita, holding onto my hand and crying terribly. “What are you doing?” I mumbled, pulling my hand away from her hold. “You're finally awake,” she said upon looking at me and then she began to cry even more loudly. “I thought I lost you, Dahlia. I'm sorry for telling you those things and making you pass out,” she kept crying. “Hey, hey. I'm fine.” I tried to pacify her, but heck she just kept crying and blaming herself. In the end, I gave up and let her do her thing. “How long was I unconscious?” I asked when she finally stopped being dramatic. “Three hours, the doctor said you're stressed and starving and it's bad for your pregnancy….” “I swear Dahlia. I didn't know you're pregnant. I wouldn't have stressed you out and made you pass out if I had known. I'm so sorry,” she began crying yet again. I sighed. I never
Chapter 11 DAHLIA “What time will you be coming to the office today?” Desmond asked, curiously staring at me. I was still in my pajamas and was seated on the bed scrolling through my phone. “Maybe in the afternoon. I'm not sure yet. But I'll definitely show up,” I told him. “Oh,” he hummed, smiling. The weekend was a roller coaster for me. After being admitted to the hospital, I came back home only to find out that Martha had told everyone, including Desmond about my pregnancy. I was pissed off, but of course I pretended like I didn't mind. As for Demond’s lie about going to spend the night at his family's place, well he apologized for lying and went ahead to add that he had lied because I was being suspicious of him and his clients lately. And to put me at ease, he had to lie he was going to visit his family, so I don't worry or stress over it. Well, like expected, I wholeheartedly accepted his apology and kept acting like a doting housewife. Anita had made me realize that I
Chapter 13 DAHLIA I was in pain. My head was banging, my body was aching. It felt as if my entire body was on fire. I tried to open my eyes but the pain in my head got even worse. I groaned, holding onto my head. I tried opening my eyes again, this time I was successful but my vision was blurry. “What the heck did you do to my daughter?!” A voice I haven't heard for years suddenly sounded. It seemed distant, but close at the same time. I rubbed my hands on my eyes and gazed in the direction of the voice, like I suspected. It was my mother and she had her back turned on me. “How dare you put Dahlia in that condition. She never did anything wrong to you! I did everything you asked. I kept her out of your way, how could you do this to her!!” She yelled. I couldn't see the figure she was speaking to, but the moment he spoke, I recognized his voice. It was my father. “It couldn't be helped, Roselle wanted the company and Dahlia's husband too. I had to get them for her,” my dad stated
Chapter 14 DAHLIA “Dahlia,” he called out, his eyes held mine for a few seconds, then he looked away as some men dressed in security uniform approached him “Get this man out of here,” he pointed at Timothy on the floor. “See! I told you Dahlia. You'll get pregnant in no time, you already found someone,” Timothy glanced at me, laughing as the security dragged him out. My tears kept falling, we always think we know people, but turns out we never really do. Someone I valued, called father, helped out in his time of need, someone I prioritised betrayed me like this, in the most brutal way. It hurts, so much that I let out a scream “He'll pay! They'll all pay for this heartlessness,” I kept crying and swearing. “Let's get you inside, you're bleeding,” I heard Ronan Knight’s voice right next to me. I had been so consumed by my pain that I failed to notice him walk up to me. “What do you want from me? Why do you keep showing up and playing the hero?” I yelled at him. He looked at m
Chapter 89BRANDON “Dahlia had a head injury. She suffered a concussion. She is in a coma right now,” I filled Ronan in on Dahlia's medical status.“What?” He let out, completely in shock.“Good news is the coma is a medically induced one. She will be woken up depending on how she responds to treatment….”“How did she even end up here?” He asked. He looked completely disoriented, this would be my first time seeing him this way, somehow I knew I made the right decision bringing him here even though everyone thinks otherwise.“She banged her head twice on whatever caused her to pass out. The impact caused her a brain bleed– which isn't too serious, according to the doctor. Her brain swelled a little. The coma was a last resort to prevent any further damage to her brain. She’ll be woken up in about 72 hours or more. Let's just hope she responds positively to treatment….”I watched him, he was listening, paying attention to every single word. Regret boldly written on his face.“And Mr. K
Chapter 88RONAN Watching Dahlia leave broke me. Emotions I never knew I was capable of feeling, flooded my senses. I watched her slam the door, not even turning to look at me once. I messed up, big time.“Fuck!” I cursed, eyes glossy. Whoever put out the belief that men don't cry must not have disappointed the love of their life, they must have not experienced their love walking out of their life.I rose from the couch the moment Dahlia shut the door, running my hands through my hair, I cussed. Not at anyone, but at myself for messing up the one stable relationship I've ever had in my life. For pushing away the one person I knew would have my back through thick and thin.Once I heard the sound of her car getting started outside, I knew it was over.“Are you just going to let her walk away like that?” Blake barged into the living room. Blake who cared about no one but himself, Blake who's never confronted me, did that today. “I don't deserve her,” I found myself answering to him
Chapter 87 DAHLIA I found it hard to believe I was just some pawn in Ronan’s grand game. Heck, I thought I was lucky, I thought the universe had given me a second chance at love. But I have never been more wrong. Hearing these things about Ronan made my head ache. I questioned my life, I questioned everything I've known about him. Sitting there and listening to them, I could feel my head beginning to hurt. When they revealed Brandon was my brother, I lost it. Every single person next to me was involved in this lie. I didn't know what to believe again. Turns out I know nothing about myself. I should have known Brandon wouldn't go beyond his way to make me comfortable and protect me merely because he was being paid. The signs had been there, him going out of his way to keep me safe, going on errands unrelated to his job, hating the mere mention of Desmond. I should have known it wasn't just loyalty. “Enough. I've heard enough for one day,” I hushed them all. “I'll be leaving now,”
Chapter 86 RONAN Blake was the one who alerted me to Dahlia holding a press conference. I didn't understand the need for her to do that, to put herself out there, on the spotlight like that. And worse, my father's eyes were now back on her. Knowing him, he'd find a way to turn that conference in his favour and humiliate Dahlia. And so, I ordered for her to be taken off that stage. What I never expected was to come home and meet another Dahlia. I never knew she had a twin. It was my first time hearing such. Not knowing what the so- called twin was after, I got Dahlia locked up in our room and decided to get the lady myself. Somehow, I lost her. It seemed I wasn't the only one after her. When I got home and Dahlia tried to leave, I couldn't let her go, not until I figure this whole thing out But my stubborn woman decided to hit me and flee. When she ran, I knew she'd get exhausted pretty soon and come back, I was so sure of that. But Brandon pulled up from nowhere and helped h
Chapter 85 DAHLIA The room got so serious with everyone's eyes on me, staring, waiting to see my reaction. At that point, I knew that whatever Gavin had to say would change my view on my life so far, it would break me and somehow I knew it might also ruin my relationship with Ronan. But I was willing to listen to put an end to this madness and go ahead with my life. I looked up at Gavin, he was staring at me, pity etched his face. He looked conflicted like he didn't want to be the one to say it. “What are you still waiting for Mr. Bright? Go ahead,” I urged him. He sighed. “I'm sure you already know your ex-husband and his family are scammers?” I nodded, it wasn't news anymore. “Well, the truth is. Desmond Sterlings was paid by Richard Knight to approach you, woo you and get married to you. You totally fell for it.” “What? I….have no reason to believe you…” I was saying but he raised his hand stopping me from speaking further. “You came to me with questions and I'm providing
Chapter 84 DAHLIA Brandon drove me to the Brights mansion. Getting there, the gates were readily opened like they'd been expecting us. I expected some kind security clearance, or something, considering the Brights were a billionaire family, almost on par with the Knights. Brandon drove in and parked the car, then we both got out. There were different men stationed at every part of the property. I expected them to question us but nothing. Instead one of them approached us and led us to the entrance. Brandon and I exchange puzzled glances. But said nothing. The door was pulled open, I walked in, Brandon behind me. I stepped into the huge, vibrant living room, my eyes met Gavin's. He gave me a warm smile. I didn't return it. I looked at the person right next to him. The former CEO of Brights Holdings, Donald Bright, my supposed father. I walked further in, then I felt someone's eyes on me. Turning in the direction of the gaze, I saw myself staring at me. I felt like looking at my
Chapter 83 DAHLIA “You let me get involved with Ronan knowing we might be siblings?” I was beyond mortified, staring at the woman. The woman who claims to be my mother. “What kind of mother are you!” I yelled. “I….I didn't know that, Dahlia…” “You didn't know what? Exactly what didn't you know? That you slept with Richard Knight? That he might be my father?” “I could have told you, but you pushed me away, you blocked my number, there was no way for me to reach out to you,” she cut me off. I stared at her. “Now you're putting the blame on me?” A laugh tore from me, a sarcastic one. “Whose fault was it that I pushed you away!” I yelled, approaching her. She rose from the couch as if her pants were on fire. “I've answered your questions, Dahlia. I've given you the answers you seek. Now, it's time for me to leave.” She picked up her bag and headed for the door. “Now, you're just going to leave after revealing these things? You'll just walk out that door after turning my whole
Chapter 82 DAHLIA “Today, I'm going to be exposing my Ex-husband Desmond Sterling’s crimes. I'm suing him for embezzlement too,” the lady on the phone announced. I exchanged puzzled glances with Anita. “So, you're not the real Dahlia?” She asked yet again. I rolled my eyes. “Seriously?” “Let's hear what she has to say and why she is claiming Desmond's her ex…” Seated there, I listened to my impersonator read out Desmond's wrong doings. Every single wrong doing of his seemed to have been documented by her. “To think I trusted and loved him blindly for five years….” She cried. “He embezzled funds from my company DAHL and nearly made it close down. I have evidence,” she threw some files to her audience. “I'm suing the entire Sterlings family for fraud and medical scam. I have submitted all evidence to the court…” she paused. “And to my dear sister Roselle, You're not exempted from all this. Once you're out of the hospital, you'll be facing a separate lawsuit. For e
Chapter 81 DAHLIA “You can't leave this room till I figure out this whole madness,” Ronan stated flatly, looking away from me and heading to the door. “No!” I let out, making him turn around. “Someone is out there impersonating me. Someone who bears my face. And what? You want me to stay here and wait? You want me to stay here and do nothing?!” “I'm not going to indulge you. Till I'm able to confirm who the real Dahlia is…” “The fuck? You can't even recognise your own wife? We've shared the bed for months. Yet you can't even differentiate me from an impersonator?” I was mad. Mad that someone out there was doing things under the guise of being me, more mad that Ronan, the man I've fallen for, the man I was betting my second chance on, the man I was willing to spend the rest of my life with, I was mad that he couldn't even differentiate me from some random woman, whom for some whatever twisted reason there is, bears my face. “I'm trying to help here, Da….” Ronan paused, avoid
