(Sybil’s POV)

I stepped out of the NICU and immediately called Mrs. Rutherford, impatiently tapping my foot on the floor waiting for her to answer. When she finally did, I was in too much of a panic to bother with pleasantries.

“Where’s my baby? Tell me right now!”

She just laughed at me. “I’m merely trying to help my granddaughter. Don’t worry, I made absolutely sure that she was stable enough to be transferred. She never left the incubator. It was transferred along with her.”

“You had no right to do this,” I hissed, “I never gave you permission to send my daughter to another hospital. I don’t know what kind of bullshit you fed that poor nurse, but you need to fix this. Stop the transfer and get my little Charlie right back where she belongs.”

“Where she belongs,” she repeated, “is as far as possible away from you. You’re an unfit mother, a fact that I don’t even need to prove in front of a judge. Those photos that have been circulating all over the internet are enough proof.”

(John’s POV)I looked at Sybil, waiting for her to speak. Part of me wanted to ignore her and whatever it was she had to say. It would probably end up being more lies, anyway. The look on her face, however, led me to believe otherwise. She looked so worried that I knew before she even said anything that, whatever this was, it was very real.“John, I’ve been keeping something from you,” she said, “and I’m sorry that it took this long before I actually told you. I just know now that you’re the only person who can help me.” She led me to the chairs that the Worthington family had been sitting in earlier. “You might want to sit down for this.”I sat down in one of the chairs, motioning for her to sit next to me. “What is it?” I asked. She sat down and nervously twiddled her fingers. “I’ll just come right out and say it.” She looked me right in the eyes. “You know how I was away for the last few months, ever since our divorce?” Without waiting for me to respond, she kept going. “Well, I w

(Sybil’s POV)I paced around my apartment the next day, worrying about little Charlie. I hoped that we would find her soon and that she was safe, wherever she was. That wasn’t the only thing on my mind, though. I was also thinking about the way I had kissed John like that. I hadn’t meant to do that. I had just been overcome by all of the emotions that I was going through. On top of the concern for little Charlie, I was relieved that John hadn’t reacted negatively to the knowledge that I had kept his daughter from him for as long as I did. He had seemed to accept her quickly, and was willing to help me find her, which had filled me with gratitude. Why did I have to go and kiss him? He probably thought that I was a complete lunatic now, and would no longer be willing to help me. Or he would figure out how to find little Charlie, only to hand her straight to his mother. Before I could spiral even more out of control, my phone rang, signalling that someone wanted to come up to my apartme

John and I followed his mother to the waiting room, where we all sat and waited. It was a good thing that John was sitting between me and his mother. It would have been much too easy for me to physically attack her otherwise. In the entire time that I had known her, this was by far the worst thing that she had ever done.John clearly agreed with me that his mother had gone too far this time, even though he didn’t say anything. The dirty looks that he kept giving her said it all. During our marriage, whenever she said or did anything to insult me, he had just turned a blind eye to it. He always did that, even when the evidence was right there in front of his face.He was giving her one of these aforementioned dirty looks, when she happened to look up from the magazine that she was reading. She sighed. “John, why in the world are you looking a

I suspected that they would clam up if they knew I was there.“That’s it, isn’t it?” My father gaped at her, realization dawning on his face. “You never intended to pay me. You just said you would, so I would do as you asked.”“So what if I did?” She stared at him. “I got the intended result. That’s all that matters.”“Give me the money,” he said, “or I’ll report you to the police!”“For what?” She let out a cruel laugh. “I wasn’t the one who purposely crashed their car into a pregnant woman. All I did was lie to you when I promised to pay you. That was dishonest of me, I admit, but it hardly warrants getting the police involved. You’re the criminal here.”“Well, you’re just as much to blame,” he pointed out, “since the only reason I did this was because you promised that I would get a substantial amount of money fro

(Sybil’s POV)My mother phoned me to ask me yet again for money. She had done that about a million times for the last few months, ever since I got divorced. Both of my parents were upset about the divorce, but only because I no longer had access to my billionaire ex-husband’s money. Technically, the money I had always given them for things like my brother’s hospital bills was my own money, not John’s, but they didn’t know that.“Mom,” I tried to reason with her, “I don’t have that much money, you know that.”“You could afford it if you were still married to John.” Her voice was as cold as ice.“Well, I’m not, so you’ll just have to get the money somewhere else.” I sighed with exasperation.“You’ll give me the money by the end of the day, or else.”“Or else what?” I shook my head at the thought of her actually threatening me now.“Or else I tell John everything.” She laughed evilly. “I’ll tell that wealthy ex-husband of yours that you’re pregnant with his baby and have been keeping i

(Sybil’s POV)I ran to a road where I knew that there would be more traffic, waving my arms and trying to get someone’s attention. The hospital wasn’t that far away but it was the middle of the night. My father’s smirk was quickly replaced by a look of sheer panic when he turned his head toward the sound of the ambulance. He wasted no time in getting into his battered car and speeding away, fleeing the scene of his crime. As he drove by me, he yelled “I will get the money one way or another, you little bitch! You haven’t heard the last of this!” I could tell that he obviously didn’t want the paramedics to see that he was the one who had crashed into me.I also noticed that he wasn’t driving in the direction of the hospital, where his son was dying. That didn’t really surprise me, sadly. I didn’t think that my mother was planning to be by Charlie’s side either.Just as I was starting to realize that I couldn’t be with Charlie like I’d planned, my knees buckled under me. I saw the am

(Sybil’s POV)When I woke up, I felt different somehow… Oh no, my baby.My baby was nowhere to be seen. I did see, though, that John’s mother was sitting in a chair by my bed.The sight of Mrs. Rutherford sitting there made my blood run cold. I hadn’t told John or his family about my pregnancy for many reasons, but I had a very specific reason for hiding it from her. John’s little sister Amelia was very sick, and Mrs. Rutherford was so desperate to find a way to save her daughter’s life that she had poked holes in all the condoms in my and John’s room a while ago, just to ensure that I would get pregnant. That way, Amelia could potentially have an organ donor and/or blood bank. As much as I loved Amelia, I didn’t want my baby to have that kind of life, existing for the sole purpose of providing spare parts to a wealthy girl.“You lying gold digger,” Mrs. Rutherford spat at me, “I knew you couldn’t be trusted. When your scumbag father phoned John last night, I was the one who answe

(Sybil’s POV)For a split second I wondered if maybe I had misheard what he had told me. Charlie couldn’t be dead. He hadn’t even met my baby - his niece - yet. It just didn’t seem right.I could feel my eyes stinging with unshed tears. “I wasn’t with him,” I said, “I didn’t want him to be alone when he died.”“He wasn’t alone.” Mark smiled sadly at me. “When I was told what had happened and that you were unable to be with him like you’d wanted, I cleared my schedule and stayed right by his side until the very end. Brian was there, too. Don’t worry, he didn’t suffer.”“Thank you for being there for him,” I said sincerely, “I know that he appreciated all that you did to help him in his final months. So did I.”“I’ll miss his jokes.” Mark looked at me. “Would you like to see him? The NICU is on the way to his room, so we can stop and see your daughter first.”I nodded. “I’d like that.”“By the way,” he said as he helped me into the wheelchair, “I called Emma and told her everything, a

(Sybil’s POV)In the midst of all the confusion, Mr. Worthington went up on the stage. “Excuse me, everyone,” he said into the microphone, causing everyone to stop what they were doing and look at him, “I’m sorry about all of this. There’s plenty of food, and an open bar.” He gestured to a corner of the room, where the bar and buffet table were located. “Please don’t hesitate to help yourselves while we sort this out.” He got off the stage and walked over to where we were standing. “We definitely have things to talk about, but not here. Let’s go upstairs to one of the suites. We’ll have more privacy there.” He took Willa’s arm and led her out of the room, since she was visibly too stunned to move on her own.Mrs. Worthington, John, Alex and I followed. Brian held back for a second, then with a determined look on his face, started walking with us.Mr. Worthington, noticing this, let go of Willa just long enough to go over to Brian. “I’m sorry, Brian,” he said, “but this is a family ma

(Sybil’s POV)I stood frozen to the spot, staring at the images of myself and John, until they were blurred by the tears that were now burning my eyes. I was aware of someone taking my arm and guiding me off the stage, but I couldn’t see who it was at first. Then I blinked a few times to clear my vision, and Brian’s worried face came into view. He seemed to be genuinely concerned for me and not judgemental at all. That thought, along with the humiliation that I was currently suffering, made me cry even more. I buried my face into his shoulder as he led me toward the exit.“I can explain everything,” I sobbed as he walked me closer to the door, “it’s all a misunderstanding.”He tightened his grip on me. “It doesn’t matter. Let's just concentrate on getting you out of this place.”Just as we were about to leave, Willa marched over to us and blocked the doorway. “You can’t escape that easily, Sybil,” she sneered at me, “I’ll make sure of it. The Worthingtons have already done more than enough for me. I’m just grateful to them for giving me this position.”“By the way,” he said, “I would really appreciate it if you didn’t tell anyone where we met.”“You don’t want anyone to know that we met in the hospital?” I was surprised. “Why not?”“I know that I turned out not to have a serious illness, but if word gets out that I even suspected that I might have ALS, it could affect the market.” He shrugged. “That’s why I went to Mark for consultation as soon as I started feeling like something was wrong with me. We go way back, and I knew that I could count on his discretion.”“Your secret is safe with me.” I put my hand on his arm. “While we’re on the subject of secrets, there are certain people who don’t know - who can’t know - that little

(Sybil’s POV)As I got ready for the party that night, I thought about how unaccustomed I was to formal occasions like this. I really wanted to make a good impression. Someone like Willa, for example, would have been attending these kinds of parties for her entire life and would know what to expect and how to act.My dress was a bit too tight. I had decided to wear it because, although I had bought it a while ago, I hadn’t had the chance to wear it yet. I didn’t see the point in spending money on a new dress, when I had one that was perfectly good and relatively new. It was only when I put the dress on tonight that I remembered how much slimmer I was before little Charlie. Oh, well. I was still able to breathe and sit down comfortably in the dress, so it was good enough for tonight. I looked at myself in the mirror and saw that it didn’t look nearly as tight as it felt. I finished getting ready and headed out. When I got to the venue where the party was being held, I looked around fo
