(Sybil’s POV)
I ran to a road where I knew that there would be more traffic, waving my arms and trying to get someone’s attention. The hospital wasn’t that far away but it was the middle of the night.
My father’s smirk was quickly replaced by a look of sheer panic when he turned his head toward the sound of the ambulance.
He wasted no time in getting into his battered car and speeding away, fleeing the scene of his crime. As he drove by me, he yelled “I will get the money one way or another, you little bitch! You haven’t heard the last of this!”
I could tell that he obviously didn’t want the paramedics to see that he was the one who had crashed into me.
I also noticed that he wasn’t driving in the direction of the hospital, where his son was dying. That didn’t really surprise me, sadly. I didn’t think that my mother was planning to be by Charlie’s side either.
Just as I was starting to realize that I couldn’t be with Charlie like I’d planned, my knees buckled under me. I saw the ambulance coming closer, and two paramedics rushing over to me.
The last thing I heard before everything faded to black was one of the paramedics talking.
The only words I could make out were “bleeding heavily.”
Then the next thing I know, I was lying on a table, and there was a blinding white light above me. Once my eyes adjusted to the light and I was able to see clearly, I saw people hovering around wearing surgical scrubs. I started panicking as soon as I realized that I was in an operating room. “What’s going on? Why am I here?”
The anesthesiologist’s face loomed over me. Her eyes, which were the only part of her face that wasn’t covered up, looked at me with kindness and compassion. “Ms. Smith, you lost a lot of blood. You’re here for an emergency caesarean section.”
“What?” I gaped at her. “I can’t, not right away! It’s much too soon for that!” Tears started streaming down my face. “I have three months left. It’s too early.”
She put her hand on my shoulder, trying to reassure me. “I know this is difficult, but you need to try and relax.”
Easy for her to say, I thought to myself. “What about my brother?”
She gave me a puzzled look. “Your brother?”
“My brother Charlie.” I nodded. “I need to be with him, so he doesn’t have to die all alone! Doesn’t anybody understand that?”
As soon as I had finished speaking, the anesthesiologist turned and nodded to one of the nurses, who promptly rushed out of the door.
Then the anesthesiologist turned her attention back to me. “You certainly do have multiple reasons to be stressed right now, Ms. Smith. This will be easier for you if you’re able to relax. However, if you prefer, I could give you something to anesthetize you completely. Would you like that?”
“Okay.” Being unconscious did sound like a good idea, although none of this was happening the way I had hoped. Come to think about it, my life hadn’t exactly been going to plan for the past three years, so why should this be any different?
Three years ago, I was working as John’s secretary. It didn’t take long for us to take our relationship from professional to sexual, and we started sleeping together.
We were both happy with the way things were. It was just a bit of fun, nothing serious, until he found out that indecent photos of us during one of our trysts were circulating. They were taken by an opportunist tabloid at the worst possible time.
At the time, John was about to become the next CEO of his family’s company after his grandfather retired. His grandfather urged him to marry me, so that if the photos were ever made public, we would already be married and it wouldn’t be a scandal.
We entered a contract marriage that was supposed to last five years. Part of the deal was that we were not to have children, which I was fine with then. We took every precaution to make sure that I wouldn’t get pregnant. After a while, though, I found myself falling in love with him and hoping that our contract marriage would become a real one.
Just after our third anniversary, the photographer came forward and changed his story, claiming that I had paid him to take those pictures in order to force John to marry me.
John believed him without even hearing my side of the story, and we got divorced. He hated me now.
The scandal followed me everywhere I went, until I finally decided to leave the country for a while.
Then, during my travels, I found out that I was pregnant as a result of what ended up being my last time sleeping with John.
That, plus the fact that Charlie’s illness was getting worse, prompted me to return home. I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life hiding from my problems. I wanted to be able to see Charlie before he died, and I wanted him to meet his niece or nephew.
My final thought before drifting into unconsciousness was of how those two things might never happen.
(Sybil’s POV)When I woke up, I felt different somehow… Oh no, my baby.My baby was nowhere to be seen. I did see, though, that John’s mother was sitting in a chair by my bed.The sight of Mrs. Rutherford sitting there made my blood run cold. I hadn’t told John or his family about my pregnancy for many reasons, but I had a very specific reason for hiding it from her. John’s little sister Amelia was very sick, and Mrs. Rutherford was so desperate to find a way to save her daughter’s life that she had poked holes in all the condoms in my and John’s room a while ago, just to ensure that I would get pregnant. That way, Amelia could potentially have an organ donor and/or blood bank. As much as I loved Amelia, I didn’t want my baby to have that kind of life, existing for the sole purpose of providing spare parts to a wealthy girl.“You lying gold digger,” Mrs. Rutherford spat at me, “I knew you couldn’t be trusted. When your scumbag father phoned John last night, I was the one who answe
(Sybil’s POV)For a split second I wondered if maybe I had misheard what he had told me. Charlie couldn’t be dead. He hadn’t even met my baby - his niece - yet. It just didn’t seem right.I could feel my eyes stinging with unshed tears. “I wasn’t with him,” I said, “I didn’t want him to be alone when he died.”“He wasn’t alone.” Mark smiled sadly at me. “When I was told what had happened and that you were unable to be with him like you’d wanted, I cleared my schedule and stayed right by his side until the very end. Brian was there, too. Don’t worry, he didn’t suffer.”“Thank you for being there for him,” I said sincerely, “I know that he appreciated all that you did to help him in his final months. So did I.”“I’ll miss his jokes.” Mark looked at me. “Would you like to see him? The NICU is on the way to his room, so we can stop and see your daughter first.”I nodded. “I’d like that.”“By the way,” he said as he helped me into the wheelchair, “I called Emma and told her everything, a
(Sybil’s POV)John was studying me intensely, clearly confused as to what I was doing in the hospital. He was holding a baby in one arm and much to my annoyance, his other arm was linked with his fiancée Willa’s. Or were they married by now? Actually, I didn’t want to know. From the puzzled look on his face as he took in the fact that I was sitting in a wheelchair and wearing a hospital gown, I got the impression that his mother hadn’t told him about the baby yet. I decided that, if John really didn’t know about the baby, I wouldn’t volunteer any information. Little Charlie doesn’t need him in her life.“Charlie died this morning,” I said, as an explanation for what I was doing there, “I was involved in a car accident when I was hurrying to get here in time. Nothing serious, just minor injuries.” I glanced at the baby he was holding.John followed my gaze. “This is my son.” Beside him, Willa was beaming. So he finally admitted it. He had told me multiple times before we got divorc
(John’s POV)“What? You can’t be serious!” Willa scowled as she talked on the phone, then turned to face me. “I can’t believe this. Your ex-wife is going to be the next CFO of my family’s company. Why her? That woman can’t even drive without getting into a car accident!” She eyed me suspiciously. “Did you know about this?”I tightened my grip on the steering wheel. “No, this is as much of a shock to me as it is to you.”“Why her?” Willa asked again, more to herself than to me. I listened to Willa’s rant, wishing that she would move onto another subject. I didn’t want to think about Sybil. Seeing her again after six months opened up old wounds that, if I were completely honest with myself, had never truly healed. I couldn’t look her in the eyes without thinking about how she had succeeded in fooling me for three whole years. I knew going into our marriage that it was just a five-year contract, and that it wasn’t based on love. Somewhere along the way, however, I found myself fallin
(Sybil’s POV)Charlie’s funeral was a few days after I left the hospital. Little Charlie was still in the NICU, of course, but I went to see her every day. I was planning on going to see her after the funeral.“Sybil!” Alex approached me and gave me a big hug. He was a close friend of mine, and he just happened to be John’s cousin. Those two had always hated each other, though. Their fathers and grandfather had pitted them against each other their entire lives, and they were constantly competing over everything. John had accused him of trying to steal me away while we were married, which was ridiculous. Alex and I were just friends.I hadn’t seen Alex for months. A very short time after the news broke out about my supposed gold digging ways, I found out that he and John were going on a business trip to England, where the overseas department of their family’s company was located. At the time, Alex had just returned after having been in charge of the department for three years. Then h
(Sybil’s POV)Mark and Emma left me and Alex to talk, knowing that we would want to catch up after not seeing each other for months. “So,” Alex said, “what have you been up to since the last time we saw each other?”I knew that I had to be careful about how I answered his question. I hadn’t told him that I was pregnant. How could I? We hadn’t had a real conversation since before the scandal broke out. He and John had left for London almost immediately, with Willa apparently tagging along for some reason. After that, it seemed like every time I called Alex from wherever I happened to be traveling at that particular moment, things were kind of awkward between us. We were always on friendly terms, but something just seemed off. It was like he was hiding something from me. There were so many times that I wanted to tell him about the baby, but I could never find the right way to do it over the phone. I wasn’t sure how to do it by email or in a letter, either. It wasn’t that I was afraid o
(Sybil’s POV)I knew that I owed Alex an explanation, but at the same time, I couldn’t risk the chance of John coming closer and hearing me talk about little Charlie. I had to make sure Willa didn’t hear anything either. She wouldn’t hesitate to spill the beans to John. If there was an opportunity to try to make my life miserable, she always took it. This situation wouldn’t be any different. At least Alex found out my secret after the funeral and not before. People were starting to get ready to leave, so I thought that he and I could do the same. “Alex,” I said, taking his hand, “I’m so sorry that you had to find out this way, but I can explain everything.”He looked at me. “Do you really have a baby, Sybil? I had no idea,” he whispered, evidently knowing that I was trying to keep this a secret.I nodded. “Let’s go to the hospital. That’s where she is.”“Okay,” he said, “I’ll drive.”We went out to his car and got in. “I’m sorry I didn’t say anything before, Alex. Believe me, I wanted
(Sybil’s POV)I forced a smile when I saw Mrs. Rutherford, and she did the same. I briefly wondered if Alex had known that she would be here, and if in addition to wanting to see my baby, he wanted to avoid his aunt. While she wasn’t mean to him like she was to me, he was often frustrated by her behavior. He had seen her at Charlie’s funeral today, and probably yesterday when he came to see Amelia, so I didn’t blame him at all for needing a break from her.“Sybil!” Amelia’s eyes widened with excitement when she saw me. “I missed you so much!”I went over to her bed and scooped her up in a big hug. “I missed you, too. I’m sorry I couldn’t come until now.”Mrs. Rutherford stood up and smiled warmly at her daughter, clearly pleased to see her so happy. “I’ll be back in a little while, to give you two a chance to catch up.” When she brushed past me, however, she grunted under her breath and gave me a small scowl. She clearly hadn’t forgotten our conversation from the funeral, and I coul
(Sybil’s POV)I hung back before making my presence known. My father and Mrs. Rutherford continued arguing, and I wanted to hear as much as possible of this conversation. I suspected that they would clam up if they knew I was there.“That’s it, isn’t it?” My father gaped at her, realization dawning on his face. “You never intended to pay me. You just said you would, so I would do as you asked.”“So what if I did?” She stared at him. “I got the intended result. That’s all that matters.”“Give me the money,” he said, “or I’ll report you to the police!”“For what?” She let out a cruel laugh. “I wasn’t the one who purposely crashed their car into a pregnant woman. All I did was lie to you when I promised to pay you. That was dishonest of me, I admit, but it hardly warrants getting the police involved. You’re the criminal here.”“Well, you’re just as much to blame,” he pointed out, “since the only reason I did this was because you promised that I would get a substantial amount of money fro
(Sybil’s POV)Since the police obviously weren’t willing to help, all that we could do at this point was wait for Amelia’s surgery to be over. John and I followed his mother to the waiting room, where we all sat and waited. It was a good thing that John was sitting between me and his mother. It would have been much too easy for me to physically attack her otherwise. In the entire time that I had known her, this was by far the worst thing that she had ever done.John clearly agreed with me that his mother had gone too far this time, even though he didn’t say anything. The dirty looks that he kept giving her said it all. During our marriage, whenever she said or did anything to insult me, he had just turned a blind eye to it. He always did that, even when the evidence was right there in front of his face.He was giving her one of these aforementioned dirty looks, when she happened to look up from the magazine that she was reading. She sighed. “John, why in the world are you looking a
(Sybil’s POV)I paced around my apartment the next day, worrying about little Charlie. I hoped that we would find her soon and that she was safe, wherever she was. That wasn’t the only thing on my mind, though. I was also thinking about the way I had kissed John like that. I hadn’t meant to do that. I had just been overcome by all of the emotions that I was going through. On top of the concern for little Charlie, I was relieved that John hadn’t reacted negatively to the knowledge that I had kept his daughter from him for as long as I did. He had seemed to accept her quickly, and was willing to help me find her, which had filled me with gratitude. Why did I have to go and kiss him? He probably thought that I was a complete lunatic now, and would no longer be willing to help me. Or he would figure out how to find little Charlie, only to hand her straight to his mother. Before I could spiral even more out of control, my phone rang, signalling that someone wanted to come up to my apartme
(John’s POV)I looked at Sybil, waiting for her to speak. Part of me wanted to ignore her and whatever it was she had to say. It would probably end up being more lies, anyway. The look on her face, however, led me to believe otherwise. She looked so worried that I knew before she even said anything that, whatever this was, it was very real.“John, I’ve been keeping something from you,” she said, “and I’m sorry that it took this long before I actually told you. I just know now that you’re the only person who can help me.” She led me to the chairs that the Worthington family had been sitting in earlier. “You might want to sit down for this.”I sat down in one of the chairs, motioning for her to sit next to me. “What is it?” I asked. She sat down and nervously twiddled her fingers. “I’ll just come right out and say it.” She looked me right in the eyes. “You know how I was away for the last few months, ever since our divorce?” Without waiting for me to respond, she kept going. “Well, I w
(Sybil’s POV)I stepped out of the NICU and immediately called Mrs. Rutherford, impatiently tapping my foot on the floor waiting for her to answer. When she finally did, I was in too much of a panic to bother with pleasantries. “Where’s my baby? Tell me right now!”She just laughed at me. “I’m merely trying to help my granddaughter. Don’t worry, I made absolutely sure that she was stable enough to be transferred. She never left the incubator. It was transferred along with her.”“You had no right to do this,” I hissed, “I never gave you permission to send my daughter to another hospital. I don’t know what kind of bullshit you fed that poor nurse, but you need to fix this. Stop the transfer and get my little Charlie right back where she belongs.”“Where she belongs,” she repeated, “is as far as possible away from you. You’re an unfit mother, a fact that I don’t even need to prove in front of a judge. Those photos that have been circulating all over the internet are enough proof.”I slu
(Sybil’s POV)In the midst of all the confusion, Mr. Worthington went up on the stage. “Excuse me, everyone,” he said into the microphone, causing everyone to stop what they were doing and look at him, “I’m sorry about all of this. There’s plenty of food, and an open bar.” He gestured to a corner of the room, where the bar and buffet table were located. “Please don’t hesitate to help yourselves while we sort this out.” He got off the stage and walked over to where we were standing. “We definitely have things to talk about, but not here. Let’s go upstairs to one of the suites. We’ll have more privacy there.” He took Willa’s arm and led her out of the room, since she was visibly too stunned to move on her own.Mrs. Worthington, John, Alex and I followed. Brian held back for a second, then with a determined look on his face, started walking with us.Mr. Worthington, noticing this, let go of Willa just long enough to go over to Brian. “I’m sorry, Brian,” he said, “but this is a family ma
(Sybil’s POV)I stood frozen to the spot, staring at the images of myself and John, until they were blurred by the tears that were now burning my eyes. I was aware of someone taking my arm and guiding me off the stage, but I couldn’t see who it was at first. Then I blinked a few times to clear my vision, and Brian’s worried face came into view. He seemed to be genuinely concerned for me and not judgemental at all. That thought, along with the humiliation that I was currently suffering, made me cry even more. I buried my face into his shoulder as he led me toward the exit.“I can explain everything,” I sobbed as he walked me closer to the door, “it’s all a misunderstanding.”He tightened his grip on me. “It doesn’t matter. Let's just concentrate on getting you out of this place.”Just as we were about to leave, Willa marched over to us and blocked the doorway. “You can’t escape that easily, Sybil,” she sneered at me, “I’ll make sure of it. All of these people need to see you as you re
(Sybil’s POV)After Mrs. Worthington left us backstage, Brian stopped rifling through his notes and glanced at me. “Are you okay with the change in plans?”I nodded, smiling at him. “It’s fine. The Worthingtons have already done more than enough for me. I’m just grateful to them for giving me this position.”“By the way,” he said, “I would really appreciate it if you didn’t tell anyone where we met.”“You don’t want anyone to know that we met in the hospital?” I was surprised. “Why not?”“I know that I turned out not to have a serious illness, but if word gets out that I even suspected that I might have ALS, it could affect the market.” He shrugged. “That’s why I went to Mark for consultation as soon as I started feeling like something was wrong with me. We go way back, and I knew that I could count on his discretion.”“Your secret is safe with me.” I put my hand on his arm. “While we’re on the subject of secrets, there are certain people who don’t know - who can’t know - that little
(Sybil’s POV)As I got ready for the party that night, I thought about how unaccustomed I was to formal occasions like this. I really wanted to make a good impression. Someone like Willa, for example, would have been attending these kinds of parties for her entire life and would know what to expect and how to act.My dress was a bit too tight. I had decided to wear it because, although I had bought it a while ago, I hadn’t had the chance to wear it yet. I didn’t see the point in spending money on a new dress, when I had one that was perfectly good and relatively new. It was only when I put the dress on tonight that I remembered how much slimmer I was before little Charlie. Oh, well. I was still able to breathe and sit down comfortably in the dress, so it was good enough for tonight. I looked at myself in the mirror and saw that it didn’t look nearly as tight as it felt. I finished getting ready and headed out. When I got to the venue where the party was being held, I looked around fo
