"'If you keep making such advances, I'll be seduced for real.'She frowned. 'Just reminding you that I will consider every interaction between us a part of our arrangement. Don't get involved with me. I don't like men like you.'Caph examined the serious expression on her face and reached out one hand to tuck a strand of black hair behind her ear. Where his fingers touched her skin, it burned. She leaned as far back as she could.'Aren't you the one who's getting confused?'.After losing both her parents in an attack by rogue wolves, Ran's uncle, Acamar, took over the pack as Regent Alpha until she is of age to succeed her parents. Since the attack, Ran became reserved and ambitious, rising up to the rank of Beta on her own. Acamar gives her an ultimatum as Regent: marry a capable man and hand over the position of Alpha to him or give him the right to be Alpha before her 21st birthday. Her Unwelcome Mate is created by Rowyrn Kafka, an EGlobal Creative Publishing signed author."

Chapter 1

Chapter 1: It's Not Manly

Ran had gone a distance from the clearing to escape the crowd of the Full Moon Gathering and look at the stars. She tilted her pale face to the moon, coal black eyes reflecting the galaxy visible tonight. How peaceful. She pursed her lips.

Lately, the monthly werewolf gatherings held to report pack activity had gotten stressful.

She braced herself for more unwanted attention and returned to the bonfire at the centre of the clearing. There it was! She felt a large hand reach out to touch her from behind. Instinctively, she lifted her leg and swung it at her attacker. The offending party dodged her lethal kick with inhuman ease.

'Woah!' he exclaimed. 'Easy, girl. It's a party. Chillax a little.'

The culprit lifted his arms in mock surrender, a wide smile on his face. She frowned.

'A drink for you?' he asked. Her fingers twitched.

'No, thank you.' She continued walking.

He followed her. 'Don't like beer? What would you like? I'll get it for you.'

She glanced sideways at him. Like most werewolves in their human form, he was tall and muscular but average-looking. He kept pace with her easily. A normal human would have been out of breath.

'Don't,' Ran said.

'Don't?' he repeated. He tilted his head to the side. 'As in, you don't like beer? Or you don't like drinks in general?'

Ran stopped walking abruptly even though she had almost reached the bonfire. Here, howls of laughter and loud conversation surrounded her on all sides.

She looked the male werewolf in the eye, her coal black eyes burning. 'Don't hit on me.'

His jaw dropped at her lack of tact but he covered it up quickly by drinking from his bottle of beer. Ran walked away, her eyes scanning the boisterous crowd for members of her pack. She liked knowing where her people were, even though they were in no danger here at this Full Moon Gathering.

'I'm not hitting on you,' he said, trailing after her as she picked her way through the crowd. 'I'm just being polite, you know. It's manly to ask a female if she wants a drink.'

Ran stopped walking again, her long black ponytail whipping around as she turned and glared at him. 'That's not manly. It's flirting. You need to be more than polite to be an Alpha.'

The male werewolf flinched. 'Alright. Chillax, Beta of Eridanus. Just being nice.'

Before she could respond, he disappeared into the crowd.

Ran reached the buffet spread piled high on rows of sagging wooden tables. Obviously, feeding hundreds of hungry werewolves meant there would be a lot of food. There was more meat and cheese on these tables than there would be at a commercial poultry farm. Jars of cow's blood sat at one end of a particularly rickety table, weighing down one end of the wooden surface so it almost toppled over.

Ran pursed her lips and picked up a packet of marshmallows.

A gruff voice called her from behind.

She spun around instinctively.

Anyone from the Eridanus pack would have, because Acamar was the Regent Alpha—the current leader of the pack because Ran was not of age yet to take over the role of Alpha. Her parents, the Alpha and his Luna were killed ten years ago. Acamar, her father's older brother, was her guardian and would remain the pack's leader until she turned 21.

Acamar was big and burly with an ugly scar on his left temple left behind by a silver bullet from the Human-Werewolf War. He had sharp black eyes, just like her father, only his were hardened from surviving many brutal battles. Ran bowed her head briefly, a show of respect for her leader, but met his gaze right after as an equal (after all, the position of Alpha rightly belonged to her).

'What is it?' she asked.

Everything seemed to be going well at this Full Moon Gathering. There was peace among the Septrion County packs and no major problems had to be dealt with urgently. All the packs had given their reports and the First Shifting Ceremony had been held for the new werewolves. The 'gathering' part of the Gathering had just begun.

'Is something wrong?'

Her uncle shook his head. He gestured at werewolf behind him. A young man with tousled red-brown hair and alert blue eyes. She had never seen him at any of their Gatherings. 'He's from the Cassiopeia pack,' Acamar said, reading her eyes.

'The Alpha's fourth son, Caph.'

Caph was tall and muscular too, but in a lithe and lean way. He stood out from all the werewolves at the Gathering somehow. The people around them could not help but stare at him.

Ran also could not tear her gaze away.

His name was familiar even though he wasn't.

After a moment, she realised why. Her pack's latest obsession had been the rumours of a college student named Caph who was caught making out in a lecture theatre while another class was in session.

She did not expect 'Caph' to be a werewolf.

Werewolves rarely involved themselves with humans because it increased the likelihood of being discovered.

The rumours had described Caph as very attractive and seeing him for herself, Ran could understand why. There was something about him—the bold red tint in his brown hair, the misty seductive gaze that made you forget what you were doing?—probably the way he held himself with lazy confidence, that drew people to him.

Ran's was sure he was the kind of werewolf who always got what he wanted.

Most likely through seduction.

Ran despised this type of male the most.

'Happy 20th birthday, Beta of Eridanus,' Caph said with an charming smile, holding out his hand to shake hers.

She refused to take his hand.

Immediately the conversations of the werewolves around her began to include Caph's name. And hers.

Ran's eyes flicked over to her uncle and narrowed. Had he told the Cassiopeia werewolf about her birthday? Why?

Acamar's eyes gleamed when he noticed the question in her eyes.

'Ran. This is an order,' he commanded.

Immediately, Ran straightened her back, her senses heightened. An Alpha's order was the sacred word of his pack. Even she could not resist it—yet. Not until she turned 21.

'You will marry Caph.'

'What?!'

Her uncle's eyes hardened and he asserted his authority with a growl. Ran lowered her head reluctantly.

'You must marry before you turn 21,' Acamar declared, 'otherwise you will hand over the right to be Alpha to me.'

Chapter 2: Negotiating A Mutually-Beneficial Arrangement
'When were you going to tell me about this?' Caph asked Acamar casually. He sounded amused.Ran had multiple problems with this.Firstly, she had no intention of handing over her right to be Alpha to her uncle, the Regent. As the late Alpha's only daughter, she was the rightful leader of Eridanus and she intended to lead the pack herself. That was the reason she trained so hard to become a Beta even though she was already her father's heir. Secondly, even if she decided to marry—which would never happen—she would choose a partner on her own. Acamar had no business ordering her to marry anybody, much less an entitled domineering playboy from a purebred pack.Sure, it was a good political move to form an alliance with a revered ancient pack, especially if the other party was the Alpha's fourth son. An unranked purebred werewolf was considered more elite than a regular pack Alpha. But Caph's suspension from a human college for his scandalous act said a lot about his character! Finally, C

Chapter 3: Be Convincing
Caph's quick agreement to Ran's proposed arrangement stunned her. She had expected some resistance or some sort of negotiation. But all he did was smile an infuriatingly casual smile and ask, 'How in love do we need to be?' His blue eyes had turned green in the yellow tint of the bonfire, his chiselled jaw sharper in the shadows of the night. She could smell his wolfy scent this close up.Her uncle should have at least chosen a less irritating werewolf!Ran pushed him away with her hands on his chest, saying, 'Not so much. Just enough to convince my uncle.'She felt his heartbeat quicken through her fingers, his body warmer than she expected. His loose white t-shirt was draped over him in a way that revealed the lean muscles along his arms and chest, barely separating them from each other. An electric shock jolted through her palms until she was heating up with heat that did not come from the bonfire. It was a bizarre sensation she had never felt before with anyone—not once during her

Chapter 4: Physically Strong But Weak
Ran decided to spend the rest of the Full Moon Gathering up a tree. After all, she had slapped Caph in front of all the werewolves at the Gathering. Sure, they were pretending not to be interested but nobody was fooled.Especially not Acamar. He saw her mess up—there was no doubt about it.He had been too far away to hear the offensive things the arrogant Alpha of Cassiopeia's fourth son said to her but close enough to make out the slap. She didn't need a human's EQ to understand what it looked like.Ever since her parents' death, Ran had dreamt of one day avenging them as Alpha of Eridanus. She had worked very hard towards her goal and thought of doing nothing else since. Her life was dedicated to becoming the best fighter in the pack, the swiftest and most powerful, so that no one would mess with her people again.Ran picked absently at the branch she was sitting on, frustrated that even after all her efforts, all people saw when they looked at her was a jaded female heir who needed

Chapter 5: Who Is Caph Really?
The week after the Full Moon Gathering, all her pack could talk about was Caph. How handsome and courteous he was. How gentlemanly and unlike the rumours they themselves had spread. How taken he was by their unromantic Beta. How he would take good care of her if he become Alpha of Eridanus.Ran had a hard time smiling her way through these conversations.Did any of them know who Caph really was? That question made her realise she had no idea either, and so between her Beta duties, she made it her mission to find out. Most difficult part was to sort through rumour and truth. Werewolves didn't keep written records—they passed down history and facts through word of mouth. But that was the way gossip travelled as well, which was what made it was very hard to tell the difference. There were, of course, stories that were not allowed to be changed by the authority of the Alpha and these were generally how the younger generation learnt werewolf history. As a result, Ran spent her free time wit

Chapter 6: All These Expectations
Acamar had invited Caph to the Eridanus manor for breakfast today.Ran was to wait on the porch steps to welcome him.She stalked downstairs, tightening her ponytail and positioned herself in front of the darkwood door like a guard, grumbling to herself inside her head. Her uncle was leafing through human newspapers idly even though this engagement was his idea in the first place. He was testing her.She was sure of it.Caph came in a taxi, dressed in a white t-shirt that revealed the silhouette of his torso when he moved. His tousled red-brown hair was messy, like he had just woken up.'Why are you so pissed?' Caph asked as he walked up to her, hands in his jean pockets.Ran smoothed out her expression and smiled at him.He stared at her, blue eyes transfixed. 'Did you wake up on the wrong side of your bed? Had a nightmare or something?'She shook her head.He continued to instigate her with his misty seductive eyes. 'You look very pretty when you smile,' he said. The tips of her ears

Chapter 7: First Date
Ran led Caph into a study room and shut the door behind him. Books lined the walls and framed the windows. A large black-wood desk stood in the middle of the room.He had never seen a werewolf own that many books. His eyes fixated on some ancient-looking books.'That's my father's collection of werewolf literature,' she said.Caph's eyes widened.Werewolves had no affinity with books. They certainly didn't make a habit of writing them. They were an animalistic species after all.Ran leaned against the edge of the black-wood desk. 'He's not like my uncle.'Caph smiled. 'Your father–'Ran's expression had changed. The warmth in her voice was gone and her black eyes were hostile.'My father isn't a bad Alpha, he just had a different way of leading the pack. He worked the hardest in all of Eridanus. Just because he read books and spent a lot of time staring at maps doesn't make him weak.'As Ran's pretend boyfriend, Caph would have to train under Acamar to become the next Alpha. There was

Chapter 8: Another Manifestation of True Love
He was too close.Ran raised her hand to slap Caph.He anticipated this and caught her hand.A mischievous smile took over his face, blue eyes amused.'Just an arrangement,' he pointed out.Heat rose in her cheeks. She scowled. It was already getting difficult to tell the difference between the act and the real thing. He was confusing her by doing things they had not yet discussed.'Why are you so legalistic about romance anyway? I mean, you must have liked someone before, right?'There was a pause. A waiter filled their glasses with ice water.Ran waited for him to go away and tried to think of a way to change the topic. She didn't want to talk romance. But she wasn't interested in getting to know him better either.Caph looked at her expectantly. She sighed.'Romance is a lie,' she said to Caph. 'It's an stupid concept used by society to take advantage of people's weaknesses and undermine true love.''Oh? So what is true love?'Ran narrowed her eyes. She had not expected that questio

Chapter 9: It's Official
Caph crossed his arms across his chest.Ran noticed what he wasn't wearing a shirt for the first time. His lean and muscular torso was bare and tempting. For some reason, she felt her cheeks heat up.Caph grinned even wider. 'Does it bother you? That our arrangement has everyone fooled?'Unconsciously, she took a step back. 'That's not what I–.'He tilted his head. 'Then what's the problem? Do you like me?'The memory of Caph's hand on her face came to her mind. She remembered the electric touch when he gently swept her hair behind her ear and the glowing warmth of his blue eyes on her.The same pair of eyes were fixed on her now, but they were taunting.Ran shoved him away from her and stormed out of this room, yelling, 'No way!'Why had she come to him for help in quelling the rumours? They were proof that everyone believed their arrangement was real.Ran refused to talk to Caph until the next Full Moon Gathering. With all the rumours about them flying around, there was no need to ex

Chapter 10: Cooperation
Ran kept her face as impassive as she could but it was difficult to control the blood rushing to her head.Ran glanced at Caph who smiled proudly, his hands in his jean pockets, unperturbed.Did he realise how grave their situation had become? They had to up improve their act and reassure Acamar of her obedience so that he'd calm down and not marry her off raashly!Either way, it was an official engagement now.Their act had to be flawless. The First Shifting Ceremony passed by in a blur. The bonfire was lit and music blasted from large, ancient-looking speakers. Werewolves began to mingle and boisterous conversations echoed through the clearing. People were downing cups of cow's blood so they'd have enough strength to party through the night.Usually, Ran would retreat from the clearing to her secret place to do some stargazing. But because of her uncle's announcement, people kept coming up to her to congratulate them. She noticed Acamar's eyes on her in the distance, dark gaze daring
