Sam-
Mr. Stranger took the seat at the front of the table. Running his hand through his hair, he spoke “everyone take a seat, I’d like to get started sometime before lunch.” He checked his watch and rolled his eyes. This guy is going to be really fun to deal with.
Everyone started taking their seats and the meeting got underway.
After an hour and a half, I started spacing out. I was more exhausted from the gym than I thought and before I knew it ‘BAM’ a hand hit the table next to my seat. I looked up and there was Mr. Stranger.
“Can you refrain from daydreaming on my time Kerns?” His snarky tone was deep and shook something inside of me.
I looked around to notice we were one of the few people left at the meeting and I started gathering my paperwork and putting it away.
“My apologies,” I said as I stood. This stranger towered over me and was almost twice my size wide-wise. He was in my book a giant.
“Don’t let it happen again.” He started walking away so I mumbled my grief under my breath and headed to my office. Why can’t I focus anymore these last two days? It’s like my mind keeps being dragged off to nowhere land.
I heard a knock on my door and when it opened Bradley walked in. “Well, I’d say you really let that new boss see your efforts, my friend.”
I shot him a sideways glance “Maybe I’m just playing coy sir, maybe I was paying attention.”
“You sure? What’s the boss’s name then?” Bradley shot me his know it all glare. I tried to remember anything from the meeting, but it was blank.
“Okay, okay, you caught me. I was spacing again.” I put some papers from the meeting away in folders as I spoke. What is the mystery man’s name, and why is he so familiar?
“His name is Caleb.” Brad’s voice bounced me back to earth.
“Caleb huh?” I rolled the name around my head. Nothing came to mind; I don’t know anyone named Caleb, so why do I somehow know him?
“Am I interrupting something?” Oh, that voice, the deep baritone of it shook me again. I turned around to see none other than Caleb himself standing by brad in my doorway.
Brad took that as his hint to get back to his desk leaving me to deal with the glory drip himself.
“You aren’t interrupting, what can I help you with?” my cheeks started to warm up as Caleb started walking across the room to my desk. I felt like a high school outcast getting the football stars attention.
“I need you to file these notes from the meeting since you decided to go space-ranging instead of paying attention.” His snarky tone told me I was in trouble.
“I already filed the notes here,” I said as I reached for a folder from my filing cabinet. “you can look them over if you would like and let me know if I missed anything but I’m sure I covered it all.” I stuck my hand out with the folder to redeem myself. “I can get started on a hard copy for your records as well.”
His stare hardened as I had just challenged him on his own grounds. He looked me over from head to toe in an attempt to size me up. I felt the heat wherever his eyes landed. Was he checking me out?
“I need copies of all your paperwork on my desk by the end of the day, I need to be caught up to speed on everything. Is that understood?” he glared at me and I stared back in an attempt to make it look like I wasn’t going to fold anytime he looked at me like that. “understood boss,” I spat back at him.
I heard a growl deep in his throat, I was starting to get on his nerves. “It’s Caleb, Kerns, do not call me boss.” He spits out through gritted teeth.
“Okay Caleb, I’ll get right on it.” God this man was starting to piss me off. Can we get at least one reasonable soul to be our boss? Would that be too much to ask for?
Caleb walked off and I sat down to get started typing out all the notes for the last two meetings. Who does this guy think he is? Being demanding will not get you anywhere with me. I looked at the clock on my desk, two hours till my day was over and I couldn’t be happier to leave this stupid place.
The tip tap of the keys under my fingers led me to go into almost a trance-like state. Before I knew it I was finishing up on the twelve papers, front to back, worth of notes. I looked up and realized I had only a few minutes to print and send the notes to Caleb. I hurried up and gathered everything I needed into a folder and headed to the CEO’s office.
All the women in the office stared at me when I knocked on his door. First, knock no answer, second knock no answer, third knock no answer. I slid the folder under his door and turned around to walk off. Then the door opened to a very sweaty Caleb. His hair was a disaster, not the same as it was when he was in my office. His shirt was untidy and no longer ticked in as it had been, and his pants looked like he rolled around in the dirt. There were small pieces of what looked like animal hair on his clothes.
“I… uhh... I put the folder under your door.” I squeaked.
“Come in, I have a couple of questions for you.” He ran his hand through his hair and turned to go to his desk.
On my way in I leaned down to pick the folder up from the floor, when I stood up, he was staring at me with a spaced-off look. I walked over and placed the folder on his desk and sat down in one of the chairs in front of his desk. There was a chill coming in from an open window. I stood up and shut the window in an attempt to keep papers from flying all over his office.
I then returned to my seat and let him finish reading over the papers he received.
“You take all the notes at the meetings?” his voice snapped me back to earth. “yes, I do,” I replied in my snobby thank you very much tone. This made him look from the papers to me, the heat of that gaze throwing me off balance again. “I don’t like your tone, Kerns.” His gaze went back to the paperwork in front of him.
“I don’t like your attitude,” I snapped back. “you could be more thankful that I spent my afternoon making sure to get you on track.”
A small chuckle came from deep within him. “Alright kerns, I suppose ill read these over and contact you tomorrow.”
“My name is Sam, not Kerns and I thought you had some questions for me?” I was starting to get mad at his games.
“Not at the moment, I’ve figured them out with what I’ve read so far.” His eyes shot up to me again. What the hell, why was he being so odd?
“so be it,” I said as I stood up and grabbed my things. I walked out and headed to my office one last time to double-check I put everything in order and gathered my keys to walk out.
It was starting to warm up outside and I was very happy about it. Summer was my favorite time. Everything was so green and beautiful. I was almost in my car when I could hear some rustling coming from the trees by the building. There was a small forest by our building, and it covered a few miles at least. On the other side of the forest was my quiet little house. The home I was so ready to be back to.
On my way back my phone rang. It was Lily.
“Today sucked,” I answered, “this new guy has an ego complex, and let’s hope he's not going to be like the last.”
Lily laughed; her laugh was so comforting she had one of those soft laughs that made anything better. “Well guess what?!” she exclaimed into the phone. Her energy bounced out in vibrations through my earpiece.
“What?” I exhaustedly replied.
“Liam and his brother are coming over for dinner!” oh god that’s not good. I’m in a bad mood from work and I haven’t even made it home yet. I checked the clock in my car, and it was half past five.
“What time is dinner?” I was hoping I’d have plenty of time to get decent.
“I told them to be here around 7.” That gives me a solid hour and a half to get ready so I should be fine. “Fine, I’ll be there soon.” I hung up the phone.
A few minutes later I pulled up in front of our little two-bedroom house. It had a charming grey and white finish with a small white fence around the yard. Lily had planted or hung up flowers around the whole property, so it looked like something right out of a magazine, but it was our home.
I walked up the front steps and opened the door. The house was quiet so Lily must be at the store getting the supplies we needed for dinner. I went into my room and grabbed my favorite black shirt with some blue ripped jeans, a new pair of socks, and some undergarments and headed to the bathroom. After a nice shower, I hopped out and got dressed, and listened for any signs of Lily. I could hear pots and pans clanging around so she must be starting dinner already. I grabbed my blow-dryer and some makeup and got started on making myself look more human.
After what felt like forever, I was ready. I checked my watch and saw it was ten after seven. I headed to the kitchen to see if our guests arrived.
“You look nice!” Lily exclaimed as soon as I walked in. she ran over and hugged me.
She was wearing a sundress that had a bunch of roses all over it. It came to just above her knees. Her red hair flowed around her face almost insinuating her facial features. She had blue-green eyes and freckles all over that were summed up with almost amazingly straight teeth. She was very beautiful in the way that I was jealous of her.
“I see we haven’t received any guests yet,” I giggle to her when she headed back to the stove to stir whatever it was, she had in pots.
“Liam said they were almost here. He had to drag his brother out because he wanted to stay home.” She looked over her shoulder at the door.
“Guess that makes two of us.” I laughed, then I heard the knock at the door. I looked at Lily and she jumped for joy and took off to the door. I found my normal spot on the kitchen island and checked my phone. I could hear Liam’s deep voice and Lily’s giggles. They started getting closer to the kitchen. I turned around just in time for Lily and then Liam to clear the hall.
I froze. My heart fell to my knees and I felt anger fill my veins because the oh-so-hot brother that I was expecting turned out to be nothing more than Caleb himself.
Sam-What the hell?! There’s no way that the hot brother who was funny at the club was this egotistical prick standing before me! What in the actual hell is happening?“Sam?” his voice sounded just as surprised “can I ask what you’re doing here?” I was nothing less than pissed. Whom does he think he is asking me what I’m doing here?“Liam? Care to explain what is going on?” Caleb’s eyes shot from me to Liam and I could feel the anger in him building as well. “Chill bro, this is Lily’s roommate. Obviously, you two have met in more than just the club. Care to get Lily and me up to date on what else you have in common?” Liam and Lily passed a very confused look back and forth. I was the first to speak up. “This is the dick boss that I was talking to Lily about. You know the egotistical one.” I laid my hand out face up in Caleb’s direction to add some dramatics to the statement.Caleb crossed his arms over his chest and looked back at me. “dick boss huh?”“Yes, you’ve been acting lik
Caleb-When I had climbed into my truck, one of my pack warriors, Lucas called. His voice was muffled as my focus had been on my rearview mirror, watching Sam. I barely heard what Lucas was saying until after I drove away and was on the main road.“Wait, what did you say?” I asked Lucas once I could no longer see Sam from my rearview mirror.“I said the rogue has been spotted.” I could hear the fear in his voice. “He was seen by your firm sir.”“How long ago?” Internally I started to panic. My mind instantly went to Sam. The last I saw her she was getting into her car.“About ten minutes ago, Sir.” I could hear in Lucas’s voice that he was expecting me to know what to do in this situation. Thinking of Sam, I started to feel a little uneasy. I had to find Sam and make sure she was safe.I thought for a moment and then said to Lucas, “Have someone follow him. We can’t lose his trail; he has already slaughtered his previous pack and a fair share of humans.”“Yes, sir.” With that, the pho
Sam-Running up to Lily’s room I start pounding on the door. My lungs ache from running into the house so fast that I was now winded. I knock again, harder this time. I hear a deep yell come from the woods. I throw open the door and turn the light on.“What the hell Sam!” Lily grabs the blanket to cover her head.“Liam! Caleb… he followed it… it’s in the woods.” I barely was able to spit the sentence out, but it was enough for Liam to jump right out of bed and grab his clothes.“How many were there?!” Liam pauses getting dressed momentarily, as he tried to fish for more information from me. “How many Sam?! Focus!”I stammer racking my brain for the words. “One. I think there was only one?”Liam reaches for his phone. “Fuck! It’s the rogue again. Stay inside and do not call the police. I will be right back just stay here.” Lily pulls the blankets down and I could finally see the scared look on her face. “Babe where are you going?!” her words tugged at my heart. Where was he going? Wha
Caleb-“It is headed right for us.” My wolf started howling out into the woods. I could feel it making circles around us, Sam couldn’t sense it as I could. The smell a rogue gives off is of the death that they have caused. This one was very potent. He started running towards us, his wolf released a world-stirring growl out. The trees stirred and I finally saw his wolf emerge. I did my best to try to put my body as a shield between him and Sam. She was helpless when it came to our wolf form.He stood there for a moment, then turned and headed away from us. What just happened? Why didn’t he kill us? Why didn’t he even fight? I shifted back and went over to Sam. “Are you hurt?” I scoped her over and didn’t see any injuries. This was good because I’ve known of humans getting hurt by being too close to a wolf that shifts.“No. Was that it? The rogue?”“Yes, but I don’t know why he left; they usually kill their targets.” I look around once more to make sure he was gone. Smelling the air, a
Sam-I couldn’t tell what Caleb was looking at, but I could feel that something wasn’t right. I went to stand by him looking into the darkness myself. I couldn’t see anything. I needed to know what was going on.“What is it?”“It’s out there I can smell it.” that one sentence coming from his mouth caused my heart to drop. I didn’t know what to do, panic, hide or stand by him, and try to fight. I looked at his expression to see if I could read anything from it, but he was stone cold still looking out the window.I watched as he loosened up and went back to the bed, “it’s moving along. The sent isn’t as strong now as it was when it was closer to us.”Holy cow, I tried to calm myself down and watch him, reading him to see if I needed to be scared. He was here, and I knew he wouldn’t let anything happen to me. He protected me in the woods, and I could see he was willing to protect me even now.I laid down on the bed. Exhaustion started poking its head out and I closed my eyes. Two days ag
Caleb-The door hit the wall and I snapped around already in a position to fight. In the doorway stood Lily, she had a small smirk on her face and was holding two cups of coffee. I was so distracted at this moment with Sam that I let my guard down and didn’t even hear Lily come home.“Good morning you two, am I interrupting something?” I could hear the smirk in her voice.“Good morning, when did you get home?” Sam giggled and covered her head in a pillow.“I haven’t been home long. Liam had some business to attend to, so I left him to it, I didn’t know you were here Caleb?” She smiled at me; I knew she could tell I was still riled up. She looked at me head to toe, and I didn’t realize I was already sweating. How does this woman do this to me? “You said Liam had work to do?” I tried the pack bond, but Liam’s side was quiet.Lily’s face changed to concern. “Yeah, something about a pack meeting.”Fuck! That’s today ugh. I looked over at Sam, her face still partly covered by the pillow.
Sam-I laid there in bed going through my phone, Friday felt like it was so long ago. I had forgotten to ask Caleb for his number and the obsessive edge to message him to ask him when he was coming back was eating at me. I needed to hear his voice or lay my head on his chest, it was clear I was absorbed in him at this point.Lily was in the kitchen, seemed like that’s where she loved to be, she was making breakfast. I sat my phone down and decided I was going to take a shower.walking into the bathroom and looking in the mirror, I could see bags under my eyes, a little leftover makeup that smeared my face, and my hair was a tangled disaster from rolling around with Caleb. I can’t believe I let him see me like this! I grabbed a face wipe and started cleaning the mess of my face off. Once I was done, I tossed the wipe in the trash and started the shower.Once I finished up, I threw on a tank top and my baggy sweatpants and threw my hair up in a bun, and headed to the kitchen. Lily was
Caleb-We were racing over to Lily and Sam’s house when I could feel a mysterious pain start. “Hurry up Liam.”If this rouge was after my mate, I had to get to her first. We rounded the corner for Sam’s. I could barely make it out, but the door to the front was open. Liam pulled up to the house, I didn’t even wait for the vehicle to stop before I jumped out and ran inside. There was blood in a trail from the kitchen. My heart sank at the amount. I couldn’t lose my mate, not when I had just found her.I felt the panic set in more when I rounded the corner and saw blood Covering the floor up to the counter. A knife was attached to the counter and had blood covering it as well. It looked like a murder scene. I walked over to the knife and used my rage and anger to rip it up.Pulling up to my nose I gave it a full inspection. It smelled like Sam but it also smelled like death. The rogue! He was here but the question was where were the girls? I turned around and Liam was frozen in the door
Sam- I dropped to my knees, a young girl maybe 17 sat on the ground pointing and sobbing. Her screams did not make any sense. I could feel my gut turn and the hunger set in, then I smelled it. The familiar smell of sugar cookies and vanilla, the smell of blood. I turned to follow her finger only to find my body collapsing next to the girls. On the wall of the Pack building was a trail of blood from the ground leading up to right under what would be Caleb’s window to his room. At the end of the trail was a familiar face, I had seen this man before in the caves. He had been the man that Blair sent to get me a blanket. The man's hands had stakes through them holding him upright to the wall, his feet were overlapped and had a steak through them as well. He looked like the pictures you see of Jesus on the cross, except his body was covered in cuts, claw marks from the looks of it. Then I heard it, thump thump. It was faint but I could hear his heartbeat. “Help him down! He’s stil
Caleb- The meeting room was another building across the way, and I could already see all the pack heading that way, Sam's hand gripped mine. As we walked, we passed by the infirmary, a tight feeling developed in my chest. Seeing her bleeding and broken, some part of me believes it's my fault. Had I decided to just leave her alone would any of this happen? Would she be what she is now? Would I have been able to just leave her be? Looking over to her as we walked, my brain started filling full of thoughts and questions. Walking up to the building I pulled slightly on Sam’s hand to make her face me. She pulled her hair back into a ponytail before we had left the room, her natural features and deep blue eyes engulfed me. She had a look of concern and determination to her; this was the look we would need if we were to stand our ground to the pack accepting her. “Do not take anything they say in here to heart, you are my mate, and I am their alpha. They will learn to love you as I do re
Sam-Waking up I could hear Caleb’s heartbeat under my ear, his breath shallow. I took in my view, he had sheets covering his hips down but my imagination painted the rest of the picture not in front of my eyes.I slowly looked around it was light out now, fuck we were going to be late for work I tried to pry myself from his body but found an arm that pulled me back into him. I laid my head back on his chest.“I already excused us from work. I told them we were working on a case out of town.” His voice was gruff from sleep.“So, tell me more about what I am now.” I could not help my curiosity.“Wolves and vamps have been at war for ages so technically you’re my enemy.” A smile teased on his face.Running my hand over his chest I tried to figure out the question I wanted answers to. “So, wolves hate vamps? Is that why everyone was talking at the hospital?”He rolled to face me, his arm finding a home between my ribs and my hips. “People are concerned because I am the alpha of my pack an
Caleb – I was so exhausted, Sam’s cold body curled up next to mine. I shifted my body with the last ounces of energy I had for her to get closer to me. I cringed when her cold skin rushed with mine, this was a new version of a girlfriend’s cold feet on your leg.“I’m okay.”I could hear her sobs coming out, I didn’t want her to feel this way. I knew that baby vamps could get out of control very easily and considering three days ago she didn’t even know about wolves or vampires she was taking the news very well.I did my best to wrap my arms around her to try to comfort her. Her body shivered with her sobs, I pulled her face up to look at me. I needed to see her blue eyes looking back at me. She refused at first but when she did, she had streams of tears smudging her face. With my thumb, I brushed her lips, oh how I loved those lips.“Can we lay somewhere more comfortable?” my voice was quiet and weak.“I’ll help you up.” She scrambled to her feet with lightning speed.I reached up to
Sam-Slowly sounds started coming back in the dark. Everything around me was so loud, an overwhelming hunger was eating at me. Opening my eyes I tried to look around the lights were far to bring so I closed them again. What was that smell? It smelled like a wet animal and metal.Everything started slowly coming back to me, the fight at Lily’s the battle in the forest, Caleb attacking me in the cave. I remembered that my leg was broken, slowly I tried my leg and expected to feel the normal flair of pain.It was then I realized I felt no pain at all, I tried to slowly focus on the sounds around me. I could hear the chatter of people around me but couldn’t focus on the words. Far in the distance, I could smell the familiar pine and vanilla smell I came to find a home in.Footsteps approached the side of my bed, where was I and why is it so loud in here? Caleb must be close because his smell was getting stronger. There was another smell I could smell; it was grotesque like a wet dog.“Sam
Caleb- I started vigorously shaking Sam, pure fear ate at my soul. I checked for her pulse, it was faint, but still there. Thank God! Crawling back up to the cab of my truck I slapped the window. “Liam hurry!” panic pulsed through my veins; she can’t die. I just found her; I’m not ready to let her go yet.Crawling back to Sam’s limp body, I knew it was going to hurt but I needed her to wake up. I grabbed her wounded leg, pulled her pant leg up, and examined the damage. Her body only shifted so slightly but she didn’t make any noise. The bone was sticking out through the skin, and her leg mid-calf was twisted the wrong way. Setting the leg back down I could feel the bone rub together, chills made little goose pimples run down my back. I had to set it and get it closed if I had any hope for her to live. The blood flow needed to be stopped before she bled out. Leaning up on my knees, I one-handedly ripped my belt from the loops. I tied it off just above her knee and watched as the blood
Sam-A searing pain spread through my back, I didn’t know where I was or who was attacking me, all I knew was I flailed my arm out in an attempt to hurt whoever was attacking me. It was only then, I felt the ears and fur beneath my fingers, that my brain finally caught up. I pulled on an ear and a roar broke the darkness. The animal retreated.I had been attacked by a wolf, was it the rouge? I took a deep breath in. I could smell death all around me, but one smell stood out. The smell of pine trees and vanilla, but that was Caleb’s smell? Did Caleb attack me? I remember him saying that wolves are dangerous but would a wolf attack someone when they were in control? The stars that once enveloped my body were slowly making their way back into my vision. I felt my stomach do backflips as my heart dropped. I forced my arms to move around me and search for anything in the pitch-black that could show me who was there. After a moment my fingers grazed something metal and I picked it up, I fel
Caleb- She had blood all over her. Before I could catch him, Liam came running past me. He picked up her petite body and checked her over. He was smelling her and looking over her wounds. I watched as relief flowed over him when she moved a bit.“It’s not hers…” His voice carries. “It’s Sam’s.”Running over to where he had her cradled in his arms, I started smelling her, I could smell traces of the Rouge but most of it smelled like Sam. Fury rose in my veins and red rings started around my vision. I couldn’t think straight, I swear to God. If any harm has come to her, I’ll make his death slow and merciless. I will rip him piece by piece starting with his fingers for even touching her. Staring at Liam, he had Lily’s head in his head pushed up to his chest, and I felt a ping of jealousy engulf me.I needed Sam to be safe, I needed her in my arms like that. This wild goose chase we were on was killing me. I needed to know if she was alive. I was going to make her safe at the pack house
Caleb-We were racing over to Lily and Sam’s house when I could feel a mysterious pain start. “Hurry up Liam.”If this rouge was after my mate, I had to get to her first. We rounded the corner for Sam’s. I could barely make it out, but the door to the front was open.
