Sam-
Running up to Lily’s room I start pounding on the door. My lungs ache from running into the house so fast that I was now winded. I knock again, harder this time. I hear a deep yell come from the woods. I throw open the door and turn the light on.
“What the hell Sam!” Lily grabs the blanket to cover her head.
“Liam! Caleb… he followed it… it’s in the woods.” I barely was able to spit the sentence out, but it was enough for Liam to jump right out of bed and grab his clothes.
“How many were there?!” Liam pauses getting dressed momentarily, as he tried to fish for more information from me. “How many Sam?! Focus!”
I stammer racking my brain for the words. “One. I think there was only one?”
Liam reaches for his phone. “Fuck! It’s the rogue again. Stay inside and do not call the police. I will be right back just stay here.”
Lily pulls the blankets down and I could finally see the scared look on her face. “Babe where are you going?!” her words tugged at my heart. Where was he going? What’s a rogue? What in the hell is that and why did Caleb go after it?
I sat down by Lily, pulling her into my arms to comfort her. Liam ran out the door and not much longer I heard the front door close. My mind was spinning, and I was so completely confused.
“Is this real?” I asked Lily. I could feel her shaking and wondered if this might just all be a dream.
“I don’t know what’s going on” Lily whispered back. I could hear the fear in her voice.
After a few minutes, I could hear banging on the front door. I got up to go answer it and there stood Caleb and Liam. Liam was holding Caleb up with Caleb’s arm around his neck. I froze. Caleb was covered in blood. He had a huge gash above his left eye and some scrapes around his face and neck. His shirt and pants were torn to shreds and he seemed almost lifeless.
Liam looked up at me, the sound of his deep voice snapping me too. “Kitchen table, med kit, and some towels.”
“What happened to him,” I grabbed Caleb’s other arm and put it around my neck. He was much too big for me to make much of a difference, but I had to at least try.
We brought Caleb into the kitchen and laid him across the floor, Lily ran in with towels and the med kit. I grabbed the towels and took them to the kitchen sink. Once they were wet enough, I returned to Caleb and started cleaning the wound above his eye.
“Liam, what the fuck happened out there?” I looked right at Liam, and I could hear my own voice crack.
Liam just looked back up at me and for once I could only see fear in his eyes.
“It’s a rogue werewolf, Sam.” Liam looked back to Caleb, cleaning his face I could hear him fighting the fear inside of him. “Wolves like Caleb and I have a pack. Rogues like that one kill their pack to be Alpha.”
I dropped everything in my hands and sat back. Liam and Caleb wolves? Rogues? Packs? I must be crazy; I’m dreaming or something. This cannot be real. My head started spinning and before I knew it, I passed out.
Snapping awake I look around, it’s dark and I realize someone is lying next to me. I jump off the bed to the floor and look around. Realizing it’s my room I try to gather my wits. Who is in my room? Who’s in my bed? I slowly peek over the side of the bed to see Caleb sleeping peacefully. The cut above his eye is now stitched shut and his face is battered and bruised.
What’s he doing in my bed and how did I even get in my bed? I start replaying the last things I remember. Caleb pulls up in his truck, the animal, Liam, wolves. I brush it off as a miscommunication and look back at the pitiful soul in my bed.
His hair was a disaster and not tidy like it normally is, his chiseled jaw relaxed in a way that lets his mouth, just barely open, and he has no shirt on. The blanket is pulled up to just under his neck and I start to wonder if he had anything else on outside of that blanket. Snap out of it twerp.
I slowly gather myself and crawl my way back onto the bed facing Caleb. I never really looked at him, he was beautiful. Even though he was a royal ass, he was the definition of perfection when he slept.
“Stop staring at me creep.” Caleb’s low voice snapped me out of analyzing him. I rolled over to face the window. It was still dark outside, and I couldn’t tell what time it was.
I felt Caleb roll towards me. “Look who’s being creepy now?” it was barely a whisper, but it was enough to get a response from him.
“You smell amazing.” He whispered back.
I roll back over to look him in the face. His eyes were back to normal brown, he looked confused. “Well, you smell like a wet dog.” I snapped back at him.
I let out a small giggle at the way he was looking at me. “What, wolf? You see something you like?” wow that was a weird statement. Werewolves? That had to be a joke, right?
He let out his deep laugh and looked back at me. “I’m trying to figure you out, human. You’re far too calm right now after everything from last night.”
“You expect me to believe you’re really a werewolf, that you belong to a pack, and that Liam, freaking Liam is a dog too?” I laugh a little. Sounded absurd to me.
“You don’t believe me?” he glared back at me.
“I believe you might be on crack, that’s what I believe.” I sat up on the bed with my back facing him. Looking out the window again I started to wonder if maybe he was telling the truth. What if there was more out there than what I lived to believe? What if werewolves really did exist? It would explain the animal I saw when I was in my car. The idea of Caleb with a tail made me smile a little bit.
Caleb stood up and walked around the bed to sit next to me. His hand was so close to my hand that it started to vibrate my skin again. How does he have this effect on me? I looked over at him, his face only inches away.
He sat there looking out the window, lost in time. The confused look he had changed into something of wonder.
Caleb stood up and put his hand out. “I’ll show you.” I looked at his hand and back to him. Should I? If I touch his hand then I’m submitting, I don’t submit. I stood up and looked up at him. He had a good head size over me.
“Show me then.” I spat out at him. With that, he turned to my bedroom door, and I followed him out. When I was following him through the house and out the front door, I realized that he had pants on, but he was still lacking a shirt. I swear the gods themselves created his body.
I followed Caleb into the forest, we came across a clearing that sat in what I would believe to be the middle between my house and the office. He turned around to face me so fast that I ran into him. He grabbed my waist to keep me from falling over. His body was so close to mine that everything in my soul shook. He leaned his face closer to mine and my body started screaming at me.
“What is that.” He whispered, his breath brushing my lips.
“What are you talking about?” I was confused but could care less, I was fighting a battle that I could not submit to. I refused to let him win this ego tug-of-war. I took a couple of steps back and glared at him.
“You don’t feel that?” he sounded confused as well.
I sighed, “feel what?”
Right as I said that I watched Caleb’s eyes turn orange again. He started looking around us as if there was a Ghost or something.
Caleb put his hand up, “get down.” His eyes darted around the area we stood in. I crouched down starting my own adventure of the lookout. I started to speak but Caleb shook his hand at me. What was he looking for? All I could hear were birds chirping and the wind through the leaves.
Caleb turned around and started smelling the air. I couldn’t tell what he was smelling for because everything around us smelt like him. “What is it?”
Right then he flipped around, fear covering his face. “don’t move.” His voice was low as he spoke. He walked over to stand beside me.
I could hear it now. Something moving just past the trees, and an awful smell invaded my nose. Almost like death and rot. I could hear growling coming from the distance.
Caleb kneeled next to me; he took a football tackle pose while watching where the noise came from. It was getting closer now.
In the blink of an eye, Caleb swooped me up in one arm and started running to the forest. He raced through the woods, half holding me like a child, half holding me like a football. I didn’t know what direction we were going.
Suddenly he stopped and laid me back on the ground. Turning around I watched as his skin shed to black fur, his ears turned into pointy patches on his head and his face stretched into a snout. His jeans still on him were now starting to rip as his legs inverted and fur sprouted on them as well.
A howl came from the direction we were just running from. It made my skin crawl, the smell started to attack my nose again. I couldn’t see anything yet, but I could hear something running in the woods headed right for us.
Caleb-“It is headed right for us.” My wolf started howling out into the woods. I could feel it making circles around us, Sam couldn’t sense it as I could. The smell a rogue gives off is of the death that they have caused. This one was very potent. He started running towards us, his wolf released a world-stirring growl out. The trees stirred and I finally saw his wolf emerge. I did my best to try to put my body as a shield between him and Sam. She was helpless when it came to our wolf form.He stood there for a moment, then turned and headed away from us. What just happened? Why didn’t he kill us? Why didn’t he even fight? I shifted back and went over to Sam. “Are you hurt?” I scoped her over and didn’t see any injuries. This was good because I’ve known of humans getting hurt by being too close to a wolf that shifts.“No. Was that it? The rogue?”“Yes, but I don’t know why he left; they usually kill their targets.” I look around once more to make sure he was gone. Smelling the air, a
Sam-I couldn’t tell what Caleb was looking at, but I could feel that something wasn’t right. I went to stand by him looking into the darkness myself. I couldn’t see anything. I needed to know what was going on.“What is it?”“It’s out there I can smell it.” that one sentence coming from his mouth caused my heart to drop. I didn’t know what to do, panic, hide or stand by him, and try to fight. I looked at his expression to see if I could read anything from it, but he was stone cold still looking out the window.I watched as he loosened up and went back to the bed, “it’s moving along. The sent isn’t as strong now as it was when it was closer to us.”Holy cow, I tried to calm myself down and watch him, reading him to see if I needed to be scared. He was here, and I knew he wouldn’t let anything happen to me. He protected me in the woods, and I could see he was willing to protect me even now.I laid down on the bed. Exhaustion started poking its head out and I closed my eyes. Two days ag
Caleb-The door hit the wall and I snapped around already in a position to fight. In the doorway stood Lily, she had a small smirk on her face and was holding two cups of coffee. I was so distracted at this moment with Sam that I let my guard down and didn’t even hear Lily come home.“Good morning you two, am I interrupting something?” I could hear the smirk in her voice.“Good morning, when did you get home?” Sam giggled and covered her head in a pillow.“I haven’t been home long. Liam had some business to attend to, so I left him to it, I didn’t know you were here Caleb?” She smiled at me; I knew she could tell I was still riled up. She looked at me head to toe, and I didn’t realize I was already sweating. How does this woman do this to me? “You said Liam had work to do?” I tried the pack bond, but Liam’s side was quiet.Lily’s face changed to concern. “Yeah, something about a pack meeting.”Fuck! That’s today ugh. I looked over at Sam, her face still partly covered by the pillow.
Sam-I laid there in bed going through my phone, Friday felt like it was so long ago. I had forgotten to ask Caleb for his number and the obsessive edge to message him to ask him when he was coming back was eating at me. I needed to hear his voice or lay my head on his chest, it was clear I was absorbed in him at this point.Lily was in the kitchen, seemed like that’s where she loved to be, she was making breakfast. I sat my phone down and decided I was going to take a shower.walking into the bathroom and looking in the mirror, I could see bags under my eyes, a little leftover makeup that smeared my face, and my hair was a tangled disaster from rolling around with Caleb. I can’t believe I let him see me like this! I grabbed a face wipe and started cleaning the mess of my face off. Once I was done, I tossed the wipe in the trash and started the shower.Once I finished up, I threw on a tank top and my baggy sweatpants and threw my hair up in a bun, and headed to the kitchen. Lily was
Caleb-We were racing over to Lily and Sam’s house when I could feel a mysterious pain start. “Hurry up Liam.”If this rouge was after my mate, I had to get to her first. We rounded the corner for Sam’s. I could barely make it out, but the door to the front was open. Liam pulled up to the house, I didn’t even wait for the vehicle to stop before I jumped out and ran inside. There was blood in a trail from the kitchen. My heart sank at the amount. I couldn’t lose my mate, not when I had just found her.I felt the panic set in more when I rounded the corner and saw blood Covering the floor up to the counter. A knife was attached to the counter and had blood covering it as well. It looked like a murder scene. I walked over to the knife and used my rage and anger to rip it up.Pulling up to my nose I gave it a full inspection. It smelled like Sam but it also smelled like death. The rogue! He was here but the question was where were the girls? I turned around and Liam was frozen in the door
Caleb- She had blood all over her. Before I could catch him, Liam came running past me. He picked up her petite body and checked her over. He was smelling her and looking over her wounds. I watched as relief flowed over him when she moved a bit.“It’s not hers…” His voice carries. “It’s Sam’s.”Running over to where he had her cradled in his arms, I started smelling her, I could smell traces of the Rouge but most of it smelled like Sam. Fury rose in my veins and red rings started around my vision. I couldn’t think straight, I swear to God. If any harm has come to her, I’ll make his death slow and merciless. I will rip him piece by piece starting with his fingers for even touching her. Staring at Liam, he had Lily’s head in his head pushed up to his chest, and I felt a ping of jealousy engulf me.I needed Sam to be safe, I needed her in my arms like that. This wild goose chase we were on was killing me. I needed to know if she was alive. I was going to make her safe at the pack house
Sam-A searing pain spread through my back, I didn’t know where I was or who was attacking me, all I knew was I flailed my arm out in an attempt to hurt whoever was attacking me. It was only then, I felt the ears and fur beneath my fingers, that my brain finally caught up. I pulled on an ear and a roar broke the darkness. The animal retreated.I had been attacked by a wolf, was it the rouge? I took a deep breath in. I could smell death all around me, but one smell stood out. The smell of pine trees and vanilla, but that was Caleb’s smell? Did Caleb attack me? I remember him saying that wolves are dangerous but would a wolf attack someone when they were in control? The stars that once enveloped my body were slowly making their way back into my vision. I felt my stomach do backflips as my heart dropped. I forced my arms to move around me and search for anything in the pitch-black that could show me who was there. After a moment my fingers grazed something metal and I picked it up, I fel
Caleb- I started vigorously shaking Sam, pure fear ate at my soul. I checked for her pulse, it was faint, but still there. Thank God! Crawling back up to the cab of my truck I slapped the window. “Liam hurry!” panic pulsed through my veins; she can’t die. I just found her; I’m not ready to let her go yet.Crawling back to Sam’s limp body, I knew it was going to hurt but I needed her to wake up. I grabbed her wounded leg, pulled her pant leg up, and examined the damage. Her body only shifted so slightly but she didn’t make any noise. The bone was sticking out through the skin, and her leg mid-calf was twisted the wrong way. Setting the leg back down I could feel the bone rub together, chills made little goose pimples run down my back. I had to set it and get it closed if I had any hope for her to live. The blood flow needed to be stopped before she bled out. Leaning up on my knees, I one-handedly ripped my belt from the loops. I tied it off just above her knee and watched as the blood
Sam- I dropped to my knees, a young girl maybe 17 sat on the ground pointing and sobbing. Her screams did not make any sense. I could feel my gut turn and the hunger set in, then I smelled it. The familiar smell of sugar cookies and vanilla, the smell of blood. I turned to follow her finger only to find my body collapsing next to the girls. On the wall of the Pack building was a trail of blood from the ground leading up to right under what would be Caleb’s window to his room. At the end of the trail was a familiar face, I had seen this man before in the caves. He had been the man that Blair sent to get me a blanket. The man's hands had stakes through them holding him upright to the wall, his feet were overlapped and had a steak through them as well. He looked like the pictures you see of Jesus on the cross, except his body was covered in cuts, claw marks from the looks of it. Then I heard it, thump thump. It was faint but I could hear his heartbeat. “Help him down! He’s stil
Caleb- The meeting room was another building across the way, and I could already see all the pack heading that way, Sam's hand gripped mine. As we walked, we passed by the infirmary, a tight feeling developed in my chest. Seeing her bleeding and broken, some part of me believes it's my fault. Had I decided to just leave her alone would any of this happen? Would she be what she is now? Would I have been able to just leave her be? Looking over to her as we walked, my brain started filling full of thoughts and questions. Walking up to the building I pulled slightly on Sam’s hand to make her face me. She pulled her hair back into a ponytail before we had left the room, her natural features and deep blue eyes engulfed me. She had a look of concern and determination to her; this was the look we would need if we were to stand our ground to the pack accepting her. “Do not take anything they say in here to heart, you are my mate, and I am their alpha. They will learn to love you as I do re
Sam-Waking up I could hear Caleb’s heartbeat under my ear, his breath shallow. I took in my view, he had sheets covering his hips down but my imagination painted the rest of the picture not in front of my eyes.I slowly looked around it was light out now, fuck we were going to be late for work I tried to pry myself from his body but found an arm that pulled me back into him. I laid my head back on his chest.“I already excused us from work. I told them we were working on a case out of town.” His voice was gruff from sleep.“So, tell me more about what I am now.” I could not help my curiosity.“Wolves and vamps have been at war for ages so technically you’re my enemy.” A smile teased on his face.Running my hand over his chest I tried to figure out the question I wanted answers to. “So, wolves hate vamps? Is that why everyone was talking at the hospital?”He rolled to face me, his arm finding a home between my ribs and my hips. “People are concerned because I am the alpha of my pack an
Caleb – I was so exhausted, Sam’s cold body curled up next to mine. I shifted my body with the last ounces of energy I had for her to get closer to me. I cringed when her cold skin rushed with mine, this was a new version of a girlfriend’s cold feet on your leg.“I’m okay.”I could hear her sobs coming out, I didn’t want her to feel this way. I knew that baby vamps could get out of control very easily and considering three days ago she didn’t even know about wolves or vampires she was taking the news very well.I did my best to wrap my arms around her to try to comfort her. Her body shivered with her sobs, I pulled her face up to look at me. I needed to see her blue eyes looking back at me. She refused at first but when she did, she had streams of tears smudging her face. With my thumb, I brushed her lips, oh how I loved those lips.“Can we lay somewhere more comfortable?” my voice was quiet and weak.“I’ll help you up.” She scrambled to her feet with lightning speed.I reached up to
Sam-Slowly sounds started coming back in the dark. Everything around me was so loud, an overwhelming hunger was eating at me. Opening my eyes I tried to look around the lights were far to bring so I closed them again. What was that smell? It smelled like a wet animal and metal.Everything started slowly coming back to me, the fight at Lily’s the battle in the forest, Caleb attacking me in the cave. I remembered that my leg was broken, slowly I tried my leg and expected to feel the normal flair of pain.It was then I realized I felt no pain at all, I tried to slowly focus on the sounds around me. I could hear the chatter of people around me but couldn’t focus on the words. Far in the distance, I could smell the familiar pine and vanilla smell I came to find a home in.Footsteps approached the side of my bed, where was I and why is it so loud in here? Caleb must be close because his smell was getting stronger. There was another smell I could smell; it was grotesque like a wet dog.“Sam
