Caleb-
“It is headed right for us.” My wolf started howling out into the woods. I could feel it making circles around us, Sam couldn’t sense it as I could. The smell a rogue gives off is of the death that they have caused. This one was very potent.
He started running towards us, his wolf released a world-stirring growl out. The trees stirred and I finally saw his wolf emerge. I did my best to try to put my body as a shield between him and Sam. She was helpless when it came to our wolf form.
He stood there for a moment, then turned and headed away from us. What just happened? Why didn’t he kill us? Why didn’t he even fight? I shifted back and went over to Sam.
“Are you hurt?” I scoped her over and didn’t see any injuries. This was good because I’ve known of humans getting hurt by being too close to a wolf that shifts.
“No. Was that it? The rogue?”
“Yes, but I don’t know why he left; they usually kill their targets.” I look around once more to make sure he was gone. Smelling the air, a couple of times I could make out that he was running away from us but where was he going?
Sam’s voice snapped me back to current events, “you were going to protect me.”
I would protect this tiny human from anything I could. She’s my human, no one else can touch her, and I would kill anyone who wished harm on her. Even if I didn’t like it, she was mine.
I walked over to her and stood in front of her. She was so fragile and small compared to me. This female was mine, her black hair in the moonlight flashed silver back to black as it moved in the wind. Her ocean-blue eyes looked deep into my soul.
Her hand came up, toward my face, and out of reflex, I grabbed it. “Let’s go back to the house.”
“Whatever you say, Boss.” I could hear she was upset but why? My frustration with figuring out this small human was starting to bother me more and more. Then there was the fact that she insisted on calling me Boss, which irritated me above all else.
I needed to hear her say my name. Why was she always so angry? Why couldn’t she be more like Liam’s toy? She seemed nice, but she was far too normal for my taste. I’ve always liked the fiery ones.
We walked in silence back to the house, her hand still in mine. She was off in her own world every time I looked over, so I left her alone. She needed this time to think, I just hope she agrees to be my mate.
With wolves, once we find our mate, they are ours forever. If one of us dies, then the other is plagued to walk the world alone and empty, or sometimes follow us to our deaths. The kind of emptiness you feel when your world is crumbling apart, it’s dark, unforgiving, and cold. It can make even the best of wolves lose their mind.
The same thing happens if your fated mate rejects you, although the healing process isn’t as long. Typically the Moon Goddess will choose a mate for you if you’re lucky. You have the power of free will to pick your mate. With a fated mate, however, the bond is stronger.
So, while I didn’t much care for the fact the Moon Goddess matched me with a human, I also wasn’t about to give her up. This means, until this rogue is stopped, I wasn’t going to leave her side. I was going to need Liam to watch over the pack, while I try to keep my mate safe.
Slowly I started to replay where the rogue has been spotted, to create a small map in my head. His favorite spot is this forest. He killed six humans in it last year. On the other side of the forest, there’s a small lake where he killed two of my finest warriors.
On one side of that lake, I knew of a cave that Liam and I use to go to when we first started shifting. I made a mental note to have Blair and her team search for it. Hopefully, we can take care of this rogue before things get out of hand.
I look back at Sam, again. as we were coming out of the forest. She still kept her hand in mine, while she had her other hand rubbing her arm. I could see her shivering, causing me to remember that humans don’t have the internal heat that we do. We rarely get cold.
Pulling her to me she looked angry and confused. I held her against me for a moment, before scooping her into my arms. Cradling her against my chest, I took in her scent and fought back the smile that tried pulling at my lips. She fought me for a moment before she rested her head on my chest and stopped resisting me.
Looking down, I could feel the electrical current flowing between her body and mine, signifying that she is my mate. Everywhere that my naked chest connected to her skin vibrated. These vibrations caused my wolf to whimper, as he longed for her.
Walking up the steps to the house I carried her inside and into her room. Laying her down on the bed, I walked over to the window to look outside. I wanted to make sure that the rogue wasn’t lingering because I was getting a bad feeling about this rogue, one which I didn’t understand.
When I didn’t see anything out of the ordinary, I turned around and sat next to her, on the bed. “I’m staying here tonight. I want to make sure it doesn’t come back.”
I watched her fiddle with the hem of her shirt for a bit before she finally met my gaze. “Will you stay in here with me?” I could hear the fear in her voice.
I tried to use my best ‘I’m not a threat to you’ voice. “If that is what you want.”
I could feel my wolf’s excitement at the idea of being able to hold her close. Even though, I couldn’t figure out what was going on in her head. Most human women I can figure out right away, but Sam was different.
My wolf whined again; I knew what he wanted from her. He wanted to have her, to touch her skin, to see her naked wrapped in sheets. I shamed my wolf ‘knock it off, she’s had enough for today’ He whined again.
Her voice pulled me out of the power struggle with my wolf. “I’m sorry I’ve been such a brat to you.”
“Why are you always angry with me Sam?” I needed an answer.
She looked at me with wonder and anger, covering her face, after a moment it smoothed over to just confusion.
“So normal for you to assume.” She scoffed.
Now I was confused. I knew she had moments where she opened up to me but nothing close to what I wanted her to. Her short explanation was annoying to me I wanted answers. My frustration started to build. I tried to calm myself knowing that if I showed any anger or frustration again, she would shut me out. I was this close.
I lowered my voice “Explain.”
“You make demands to me as if you own me, or you assume that you know what’s going on in my head.” She was staring at me.
I tried to fish through my brain where I may have gone wrong. Was that how I was to her? I couldn’t stand her thinking that I was that guy. I had to be a leader to my pack but was I treating her like my mate or like another pack member? Giving them orders on how to run things or where to go, even what to do.
I looked at my feet, tossing her words around in my head.
“I understand, and I will try to do better.”
She was right. Ever since she walked into that bar, I knew she was different, she was only supposed to be for play, but I knew that she was more than that. Then she walked into that meeting room, I tried to push her away, purposely irritating her to keep my space. Then my reaction when I came for dinner. I knew what she was asking for me.
I felt her touch my hand. I didn’t realize it, but she had positioned herself to be directly facing me. She had this look on her face, but I couldn’t tell what it was.
“What are you thinking?” her voice held so much concern. Her face was scrunched up in the way that humans do when they are deep in thought.
“I’m understanding what you’re asking from me.”
She sat back as if I defeated her with just that sentence. I sat back as well laying across her bed I look up at the ceiling. What have I got myself into, she was clearly my kryptonite, but how was I going to make her mine?
Just as my mind started to wander, I could hear movements outside. I snapped up and went to the window. Looking around I couldn’t see anything, but I could smell it. It was a scent I could never forget. The smell of rot and death.
Sam-I couldn’t tell what Caleb was looking at, but I could feel that something wasn’t right. I went to stand by him looking into the darkness myself. I couldn’t see anything. I needed to know what was going on.“What is it?”“It’s out there I can smell it.” that one sentence coming from his mouth caused my heart to drop. I didn’t know what to do, panic, hide or stand by him, and try to fight. I looked at his expression to see if I could read anything from it, but he was stone cold still looking out the window.I watched as he loosened up and went back to the bed, “it’s moving along. The sent isn’t as strong now as it was when it was closer to us.”Holy cow, I tried to calm myself down and watch him, reading him to see if I needed to be scared. He was here, and I knew he wouldn’t let anything happen to me. He protected me in the woods, and I could see he was willing to protect me even now.I laid down on the bed. Exhaustion started poking its head out and I closed my eyes. Two days ag
Caleb-The door hit the wall and I snapped around already in a position to fight. In the doorway stood Lily, she had a small smirk on her face and was holding two cups of coffee. I was so distracted at this moment with Sam that I let my guard down and didn’t even hear Lily come home.“Good morning you two, am I interrupting something?” I could hear the smirk in her voice.“Good morning, when did you get home?” Sam giggled and covered her head in a pillow.“I haven’t been home long. Liam had some business to attend to, so I left him to it, I didn’t know you were here Caleb?” She smiled at me; I knew she could tell I was still riled up. She looked at me head to toe, and I didn’t realize I was already sweating. How does this woman do this to me? “You said Liam had work to do?” I tried the pack bond, but Liam’s side was quiet.Lily’s face changed to concern. “Yeah, something about a pack meeting.”Fuck! That’s today ugh. I looked over at Sam, her face still partly covered by the pillow.
Sam-I laid there in bed going through my phone, Friday felt like it was so long ago. I had forgotten to ask Caleb for his number and the obsessive edge to message him to ask him when he was coming back was eating at me. I needed to hear his voice or lay my head on his chest, it was clear I was absorbed in him at this point.Lily was in the kitchen, seemed like that’s where she loved to be, she was making breakfast. I sat my phone down and decided I was going to take a shower.walking into the bathroom and looking in the mirror, I could see bags under my eyes, a little leftover makeup that smeared my face, and my hair was a tangled disaster from rolling around with Caleb. I can’t believe I let him see me like this! I grabbed a face wipe and started cleaning the mess of my face off. Once I was done, I tossed the wipe in the trash and started the shower.Once I finished up, I threw on a tank top and my baggy sweatpants and threw my hair up in a bun, and headed to the kitchen. Lily was
Caleb-We were racing over to Lily and Sam’s house when I could feel a mysterious pain start. “Hurry up Liam.”If this rouge was after my mate, I had to get to her first. We rounded the corner for Sam’s. I could barely make it out, but the door to the front was open. Liam pulled up to the house, I didn’t even wait for the vehicle to stop before I jumped out and ran inside. There was blood in a trail from the kitchen. My heart sank at the amount. I couldn’t lose my mate, not when I had just found her.I felt the panic set in more when I rounded the corner and saw blood Covering the floor up to the counter. A knife was attached to the counter and had blood covering it as well. It looked like a murder scene. I walked over to the knife and used my rage and anger to rip it up.Pulling up to my nose I gave it a full inspection. It smelled like Sam but it also smelled like death. The rogue! He was here but the question was where were the girls? I turned around and Liam was frozen in the door
Caleb- She had blood all over her. Before I could catch him, Liam came running past me. He picked up her petite body and checked her over. He was smelling her and looking over her wounds. I watched as relief flowed over him when she moved a bit.“It’s not hers…” His voice carries. “It’s Sam’s.”Running over to where he had her cradled in his arms, I started smelling her, I could smell traces of the Rouge but most of it smelled like Sam. Fury rose in my veins and red rings started around my vision. I couldn’t think straight, I swear to God. If any harm has come to her, I’ll make his death slow and merciless. I will rip him piece by piece starting with his fingers for even touching her. Staring at Liam, he had Lily’s head in his head pushed up to his chest, and I felt a ping of jealousy engulf me.I needed Sam to be safe, I needed her in my arms like that. This wild goose chase we were on was killing me. I needed to know if she was alive. I was going to make her safe at the pack house
Sam-A searing pain spread through my back, I didn’t know where I was or who was attacking me, all I knew was I flailed my arm out in an attempt to hurt whoever was attacking me. It was only then, I felt the ears and fur beneath my fingers, that my brain finally caught up. I pulled on an ear and a roar broke the darkness. The animal retreated.I had been attacked by a wolf, was it the rouge? I took a deep breath in. I could smell death all around me, but one smell stood out. The smell of pine trees and vanilla, but that was Caleb’s smell? Did Caleb attack me? I remember him saying that wolves are dangerous but would a wolf attack someone when they were in control? The stars that once enveloped my body were slowly making their way back into my vision. I felt my stomach do backflips as my heart dropped. I forced my arms to move around me and search for anything in the pitch-black that could show me who was there. After a moment my fingers grazed something metal and I picked it up, I fel
Caleb- I started vigorously shaking Sam, pure fear ate at my soul. I checked for her pulse, it was faint, but still there. Thank God! Crawling back up to the cab of my truck I slapped the window. “Liam hurry!” panic pulsed through my veins; she can’t die. I just found her; I’m not ready to let her go yet.Crawling back to Sam’s limp body, I knew it was going to hurt but I needed her to wake up. I grabbed her wounded leg, pulled her pant leg up, and examined the damage. Her body only shifted so slightly but she didn’t make any noise. The bone was sticking out through the skin, and her leg mid-calf was twisted the wrong way. Setting the leg back down I could feel the bone rub together, chills made little goose pimples run down my back. I had to set it and get it closed if I had any hope for her to live. The blood flow needed to be stopped before she bled out. Leaning up on my knees, I one-handedly ripped my belt from the loops. I tied it off just above her knee and watched as the blood
Sam-Slowly sounds started coming back in the dark. Everything around me was so loud, an overwhelming hunger was eating at me. Opening my eyes I tried to look around the lights were far to bring so I closed them again. What was that smell? It smelled like a wet animal and metal.Everything started slowly coming back to me, the fight at Lily’s the battle in the forest, Caleb attacking me in the cave. I remembered that my leg was broken, slowly I tried my leg and expected to feel the normal flair of pain.It was then I realized I felt no pain at all, I tried to slowly focus on the sounds around me. I could hear the chatter of people around me but couldn’t focus on the words. Far in the distance, I could smell the familiar pine and vanilla smell I came to find a home in.Footsteps approached the side of my bed, where was I and why is it so loud in here? Caleb must be close because his smell was getting stronger. There was another smell I could smell; it was grotesque like a wet dog.“Sam
Sam- I dropped to my knees, a young girl maybe 17 sat on the ground pointing and sobbing. Her screams did not make any sense. I could feel my gut turn and the hunger set in, then I smelled it. The familiar smell of sugar cookies and vanilla, the smell of blood. I turned to follow her finger only to find my body collapsing next to the girls. On the wall of the Pack building was a trail of blood from the ground leading up to right under what would be Caleb’s window to his room. At the end of the trail was a familiar face, I had seen this man before in the caves. He had been the man that Blair sent to get me a blanket. The man's hands had stakes through them holding him upright to the wall, his feet were overlapped and had a steak through them as well. He looked like the pictures you see of Jesus on the cross, except his body was covered in cuts, claw marks from the looks of it. Then I heard it, thump thump. It was faint but I could hear his heartbeat. “Help him down! He’s stil
Caleb- The meeting room was another building across the way, and I could already see all the pack heading that way, Sam's hand gripped mine. As we walked, we passed by the infirmary, a tight feeling developed in my chest. Seeing her bleeding and broken, some part of me believes it's my fault. Had I decided to just leave her alone would any of this happen? Would she be what she is now? Would I have been able to just leave her be? Looking over to her as we walked, my brain started filling full of thoughts and questions. Walking up to the building I pulled slightly on Sam’s hand to make her face me. She pulled her hair back into a ponytail before we had left the room, her natural features and deep blue eyes engulfed me. She had a look of concern and determination to her; this was the look we would need if we were to stand our ground to the pack accepting her. “Do not take anything they say in here to heart, you are my mate, and I am their alpha. They will learn to love you as I do re
Sam-Waking up I could hear Caleb’s heartbeat under my ear, his breath shallow. I took in my view, he had sheets covering his hips down but my imagination painted the rest of the picture not in front of my eyes.I slowly looked around it was light out now, fuck we were going to be late for work I tried to pry myself from his body but found an arm that pulled me back into him. I laid my head back on his chest.“I already excused us from work. I told them we were working on a case out of town.” His voice was gruff from sleep.“So, tell me more about what I am now.” I could not help my curiosity.“Wolves and vamps have been at war for ages so technically you’re my enemy.” A smile teased on his face.Running my hand over his chest I tried to figure out the question I wanted answers to. “So, wolves hate vamps? Is that why everyone was talking at the hospital?”He rolled to face me, his arm finding a home between my ribs and my hips. “People are concerned because I am the alpha of my pack an
Caleb – I was so exhausted, Sam’s cold body curled up next to mine. I shifted my body with the last ounces of energy I had for her to get closer to me. I cringed when her cold skin rushed with mine, this was a new version of a girlfriend’s cold feet on your leg.“I’m okay.”I could hear her sobs coming out, I didn’t want her to feel this way. I knew that baby vamps could get out of control very easily and considering three days ago she didn’t even know about wolves or vampires she was taking the news very well.I did my best to wrap my arms around her to try to comfort her. Her body shivered with her sobs, I pulled her face up to look at me. I needed to see her blue eyes looking back at me. She refused at first but when she did, she had streams of tears smudging her face. With my thumb, I brushed her lips, oh how I loved those lips.“Can we lay somewhere more comfortable?” my voice was quiet and weak.“I’ll help you up.” She scrambled to her feet with lightning speed.I reached up to
