Adrenaline pumps through my system as I race back downstairs.
Dan is losing his mind and I don't blame him. If it were my mate and child out there..."Lauren"...My heart stutters in my chest for a second as a wave of pain collides with it. Lauren means everything to me and if I lost her I would become a shell.
But nothing is going to happen to Samantha and her daughter. They will be fine. Our pack will remain whole. I will not lose my brother and our pack will not lose it's luna. We have come to far for that to happen.
"Dan! I called all the hotels in a twenty-mile radius...Guess who checked into a hotel a town over yesterday," I says, as I jog into the room to see his eyes completely bloodshot, but dry.
He spins around and our eyes lock as he looks at me desperately.
"Who," he shouts, and my chest puffs with the knowledge that I found her.
I can fix this and save the day. I can bring my pack the information it so desperately needs. I am useful here. I'm not just the pathetic office drone who lusts after his co-worker and friend.
"Kelly O'Neil," I growl, and my brother's face doesn't relax.
It actually grows more frustrated before shifting to confused.
"I don't know who the hell that is," he snarls while moving to attack me.
I hold up my hands desperately as I realize his mind is too jumbled to understand who I am talking about. He isn't rational right now. His primal instincts that are engraved within his shifter DNA is screaming at him.
Direct information Stanley!
"Wait, wait. That's the name of Adam Polk's mistress. The chick Samantha's ex-husband was sleeping with. It's Adam! I'm sorry I should have known you wouldn't have remembered her name," I explain quickly to ease my tormented twin and his face shifts from murderous to grateful in an instant.
He tips his head back and howls toward the ceiling as soon as my words manage to sink in. Relief pulls a small grin onto my face and he yanks me into a skin to skin full body hug.
"Let's go," he orders as he releases me, and we all shift.
I take his flank as we exit our territory and he darts straight towards downtown instead of the hotel. I bark to get my brother attention and his eyes cut towards me. His gray fur sways as his body continues to move and his bulging muscles constrict almost aggressively due to my interruption.
I quickly point towards the direction we need to be taking and he actually nods. He surprises me even further and changes our formation within seconds. Pride fills my chest as my twin allows me to lead our pack in saving his mate.
When we near the outskirts of the neighboring town, I drop back to his flank to give him the lead. We crouch low to the ground as we proceed to move through the back streets due to the humans still being awake. We don't need to further alarm anyone with a pack of seven large male wolves traveling together.
When we get near the hotel, four gunshots ring out, and Daniel's body slows as if he is pain. His pace becomes a crawl, but we don't slow down. I know my brother is allowing shock and fear to win for the moment but he will snap out of it. He has to. She needs him.
But after a few second he doesn't pick his pace back up so we circle back. He whimpers loudly as we sprint past him again and the guys snarl loudly. I nudge his side with my snout and he snaps right out of it. He growls and bolts for the hotel as if nothing even happened.
When he gets to the room where fresh blood is coming from he shifts and kicks away the wooden barrier.
"Samantha," he yells and the tone of his voice makes my heart squeeze.
When I get my view of the hotel room I see a battered human half naked on a bed and our pack's future Luna bleeding out while in cougar form. Her sick twisted ex is halfway unconscious underneath her. Angelica is on a bed crying but otherwise unharmed.
"Finley, get Angelica home! Boyd call Hurst. Lewis, get the other female," Dan orders as he move Samantha's wounded body away from Adam.
"We need to get out of here now. The humans most likely called the cops before the shots were fired," I say, as my rational brain snaps back into control.
Dan only nods to show he heard before standing up with Samantha in his arms.
"Lewis, wrap her in a blanket. Finley carry Angelica in wolf form," he orders and we all take off.
We move through the outskirts of town as quietly as possible, but I still worry someone is going to spot us.
"Why isn't she healing," Lewis asks from a ways behind me and again my stomach twists.
I know my twin is in pain and I also know his pain might just be starting. Samantha's heartbeat is only growing weaker as the seconds tick by. Determination begins to pump within my lean body as I push my paws to go faster. We need to have things ready. Sam doesn't have any seconds to spare. The others fall behind me as I rush to our pack house.
When I reach the Layne house I can't seem to move fast enough.
"GET A SPACE READY" I shout for anyone who can hear me as I shift and fall through the backdoor.
"Fuck," Benji growls before running to gather supplies.
The others file in behind me and we silently throw things out of the way to make a space for her.
"Put Luna here. Is she healing," Benji asks as soon as Dan arrives and he shakes his head.
Dan lays her down on the spot that was hastily prepared and her bloodstained fur stares us all in the face.
"Hurst said he is on his way. He even shifted," Mike says, and Dan nods again as he strokes her fur lovingly.
"Get towels," he manages to whisper, and I instantly move.
Whatever he needs in this moment I will provide. Worry for him and her is all I can feel. After months of depression and longing my heart is finally feeling something new and it isn't good.
"She is losing too much blood," Boyd mutters as I return with the towels from the hall closet, and Dan growls.
"Alpha, tell us what to do," Mike says, and my brother loses it.
"WE CAN'T DO ANYTHING. WE CAN ONLY PRAY. SO PRAY...LET THE GODDESS HEAR YOU. BEG OUR HEAVENLY MOTHER THAT HURST SHOWS UP IN TIME," he shouts, and we all see the tears in his eyes.
Desperation and terror are etched into his features, and my sibling bond cracks wide open. No amount of words can help him. He is utterly helpless. My brave brother who has never met a challenge he couldn't tackle, is hopeless and frightened. That fact alone makes me take a step back.
I can practically read his thoughts as his eyes return to staring at her bleeding body, and it terrifies me. If we lose Sam...We lose him.
STANLEY POV Sam's heart thumps slowly as the blood continues to ooze out of her wound. Something is definitely wrong. Hurst has been working on her for longer than needed for a simple bullet extraction. The sweat on his brow also points to an issue. My eyes flick to Dan again and the worry on his face makes my heart pinch. I've never seen him look so desperate. If we lose her now the pack is doomed. Dan won't be able to lead and the weight of the pack will fall solely on my shoulders...Not something I want. I prefer my place in town. I prefer having my name known for my victories in the courtroom, but I will step up if needed. The Alpha bloodline that runs through our bodies is strong. Even Finley, who is the youngest, would suffice if I should falter. Watching the lose of Sam destroy Daniel would be soul shattering for all of us. Maybe if Samantha does succumb Angelica will be enough to keep him going. Hurst sighs again and we all freeze. My eyes snap to his face and my hear
STANLEY POV The yells and growls coming from Dan's room reach my ears, and I growl lowly as I stand. Sam's angry voice rings out, catching me by surprise, and relief quickly flows through me at the sound of my Luna's voice. Finally! Dan wasn't going to last much longer without her waking up. The beast within me teeters between relieved and protective as we begin to listen in on her harsh words. "Stop speaking in half-truths," Sam growls, and I hear Benji's mate, Mariah, reply lowly. I growl again as my inner suspicions are confirmed. I tense my muscles and wait. I don't want to barge in on the situation since Angelica is in the room, but I need to be ready. She might have arrived in our time of need, but something about her has always struck me as uneasy. Her demeanor is too wild for civilized living. She is almost emotionless at times and seems unfazed by uncomfortable situations. But it's her quick reflexes and movements that make me edgy. As I listen, it becomes
Dan, Samantha, and Boyd left to join the search in Florida for Margaret Polk, and the rest of the pack has been stuck tiptoeing around Mariah and Lauren. We have all taken turns hiding out in our rooms, but being together is a must while the pack's leaders are gone. Our instincts demand it. We need the closeness to reassure our inner animals. I have used my alone time to research the bears who hired Mariah, but like my fellow pack members, my animal is demanding closeness with its pack. I haven't been able to hide away as much as I normally do, which has been rough on both my heart and my senses. Being around a heavily pregnant Lauren and a devoted David has been brutal. The females have tried to avoid each other, but each time they have been in the same room has been terrible. Tonight's dinner is especially tense. But we have to get through it. Mariah keeps leaning in a little closer towards Lauren, and Lauren hasn't looked away from Mariah once. Her angelic face is twisted int
I can do this. I can meet her son. I can hold him and show him, love. It isn't his fault I love his mother when she isn't even mine. "Stanley, can you believe it? I am a mom," Lauren says excitedly as I come through the door to her room. Hurst's clinic is small, but the walls are built to give shifters privacy. But I still need to mindful. David will be back soon and seeing them all together as a happy family will be too painful.I offer her the kindest smile I can muster, and she smiles right back. "I sure can. You will be an amazing mother," I reply as I come to the side of her bed. I look down at the tiny male in her arms, and my heart squeezes in my chest for what seems like the millionth time. He is a perfect blend of David and Lauren. His scrunched face and mixed smell is a symbol of their union and bond. He is also a symbol of what I will never have. "Stan? You okay," Lauren whispers, and my eyes snap to hers. Worry clouds the depths of her beautiful brow
"That's nice. Is Andrew comfortable with that," I ask as I follow behind my twin with my hands tucked in my pockets. "Yeah. He commented on how much he would miss all of us, and Boyd offered to go over," he answers while looking at me for a second. I'm glad the human has accepted all of us. Sam needs him in her life. I was surprised though when Dan called to say Mr. polk would be coming back with them to buy a place in town, but it seems to be working out. I nod uncomfortably before taking a deep breath and running my hand through my hair. I need to discuss more important matters than the friendly human though. "That's good. I am happy he seems to have accepted us. I umm...I know you just got home, but there are some things we need to go over now that you are back. For one, we need to talk about the bears. I don't like that they are hiring assassins to eliminate our Luna. We need to talk to them. I mean, Samantha hasn't done anything wrong," I say, and Dan halts abruptly.
STANLEY POV "Are we sure this won't turn into an ambush," Dan asks as he looks around at the log cabins built close together. The entire drive he has been this way. But I get it. His mate has been kidnapped, shot, and now she has an assassin after her. "I have spoken on the phone with Mrs. Orson several times. She has agreed to hear us out. We are meeting in the community public building. They hold discussions there and vote on community matters. It should be safe," I reply as I open the driver's side door. They follow my example and exit the car cautiously. Samantha and Dan share a look over the roof before he gives me a nod. I return the gesture, and we head for the larger building situated in the center. As my talks with Kendall Orson have progressed, the anger has lessened, and understanding has been evident in her voice, but an in-person meeting will prove whether or not the bad blood has indeed been washed away. Daniel knocks on the solid wood door twice before step
STANLEY POV Steady grunts leave my mouth as I toss square bails of hay thirty feet into the air. My shifter body is nearing its breaking point, and that's saying a lot. I have been working for thirteen hours straight, and I keep finding more projects to do in the barn. Tasks that don't really need to be done. Like reorganizing our winter supply of hail bails.Keeping myself busy and out of the house has become a necessity for survival at this point. Lauren and her adorable son seem to be everywhere. She hasn't returned to work yet, so at least the office is still a safe place. However, that does me no good on days like today...Saturday. My haven is closed, and the pack expects me to be here. "Hello, big brother," Finley says as he comes strolling up behind me. I grunt louder to acknowledge him, and he chuckles."Not even a smile...wound up that tight, huh," Finley asks, and I freeze midswing. "Don't start," I growl, not even looking his way. Finley moves closer, and I throw
STANLEY POVThe cart the stewardess is pushing, rattles as another brief moment of turbulence jostles the plane, and I tense again. I can't believe I agreed to this. When Fin mentioned flights I was so wrapped up in my feelings for Lauren, I forgot how much I detest these machines. I figured we would start with an area close by home but Samantha decided that Panama City, Florida, would be a good starting point for our search. So of course, that meant I would be on an airplane. A unsafe, unnatural form of travel invented by insane humans...Humans. Animals who are as breakable as a piece of China."I forgot how much you hate this," Finley chuckles from beside me, and I give him a stern sideye."Shut up," I order, and his laugh evolves into a loud boom that gathers attention from the other passengers."Don't be like that. The is supposed to be fun," Finley laughs, and I hold back a growl before rolling my eyes.Nothing I say at this point will get him to lay off. He has found something t
