Chapter 0002

Karl frowned.

Danielle said, “I don't need anything in exchange for my first time. I’m also officially submitting my resignation to you today. I will be busy with my graduation thesis from now on, so I won’t be able to give your younger brother extra lessons. I hope we don't see each other again. I wish you the best of luck in your business. Goodbye.”

She promptly hung up after saying her piece.

On the other end of the line, Karl smirked.

‘So, this woman doesn’t want to see me again, huh?

‘She sure has low opinions of me.

‘Well, she doesn’t get to decide what would happen between us.’

Karl pulled the phone away from his ear and stared at the dropped call notification on his mobile screen.

‘Danielle Wendell, you sure have some nerve to hang up on me.’

Meanwhile, Danielle quickened her pace, eager to get far away from the upscale neighborhood where she felt out of place.

However, she nearly stumbled on her feet.

‘Damn it.’ Karl sure had his way with her last night.

She was sore all over.

That afternoon, Danielle got a call from the dean.

With that, she arrived at the dean’s office, looking somber.

The dean, dressed in proper attire, looked at Danielle.

“Danielle, I know you’re a talented and intelligent young lady, but our family will never accept an orphan marrying into the family. I’m asking you one last time — would you rather stay in the university as faculty after graduation or keep Max?”

Danielle’s eyes showed no emotion, and she answered right away, “I’m not an orphan.”

“It makes no difference to us.”

Danielle clenched her fists. In any case, her mother was gone, and she felt that being an orphan was better than being the illegitimate daughter of the Whites.

Hence, she replied without a second thought, “I choose to stay as faculty.”

Leslie Gray was surprised by Danielle’s reply.

For once, Danielle gave a different answer from the previous three times.

“I hope you won’t change your mind after getting a job.”

“If you’re worried that I’ll go back on my word, I can put it in writing now. I will break up with Max.”

“Very well. I’ve been civil to you for the past two years, not interfering with your relationship with Max. But you’re graduating soon, and Max has his own path to walk. I hope you’ll remember what you said.”

“I will.”

Danielle walked out of the school building to find that it was pouring.

Despite that, she ran into the rain.

She had to rush to her tutoring job. Having lost her boyfriend and her gig with the Burts, she could not afford to lose another chance.

As she reached the school gate, a familiar car pulled up in front of her.

The car door opened, and a couple emerged from the car.

The man held an umbrella for a woman.

Danielle stopped in her tracks.

She was about to turn away from them when the woman called out to her.

“Danielle.”

The woman ran toward her from under the umbrella and clasped her hands.

“I’m sorry, Danielle. It’s my fault. You can hit me and yell at me.”

The man behind strode over and held the umbrella over the women’s heads.

He looked at Danielle, his expression filled with regret. “Danielle, I have no idea what came over me yesterday. I–”

Danielle looked at the couple, not knowing how to react.

It was a cliché storyline.

She thought the scene would only happen in cheesy novels.

The man was her boyfriend, and the woman was her roommate.

The saddest part was that they betrayed her by getting into bed together, and Danielle caught them in bed. That was why she went to drown her sorrows in alcohol.

Danielle ignored the woman and looked at Max with a cold expression. “Max Gray, do you know why I chose you as my boyfriend out of all the suitors?”
