Chapter 0004

The car pulled over at Academia Road, and Danielle opened the door to get off.

Karl said to the chauffeur, “Give Ms. Wendell an umbrella.”

The chauffeur handed Danielle an umbrella.

Danielle opened the umbrella, got out of the car, and turned to Karl. She said, “Thank you for today, Mr. Burt.”

“True appreciation is shown through actions, not just words.” Karl looked aloof.

Although Karl had a point, Danielle could not shake the feeling that something was amiss with what he said.

“Take care.” She took a step back, turned around, and limped away toward the nearby neighborhood.

In the car, Karl told the chauffeur, who just had his foot on the pedal. “Stop.”

As soon as the car stopped, Karl opened another umbrella, got out, and caught up to Danielle. He grabbed her arm and pulled her back.

Danielle looked back and was surprised to see Karl. “Mr. Burt?”

“Get in the car?”

“Why?”

“You’re injured. You need to go to the hospital.” The woman was oblivious to her own health. She was walking around with a limp, yet she did not seem to notice.

Danielle looked down at her foot. “I’m fine. It’ll heal in a couple of days.”

“Are you a doctor? Can you diagnose yourself? Get in the car.” After Karl said that, he thrust the umbrella into her hand and carried her back to the car.

Danielle exclaimed in surprise and dropped the umbrella in her left hand.

Leaving the umbrella behind, Karl shoved her into the car.

Danielle panicked. “No. I can’t go to the hospital. I need to get to my tutoring job.”

“Tutoring? So, are you only quitting tutoring Timothy?”

“I–” Danielle choked for words.

That was the truth, after all.

Karl scoffed as he got into the car and curtly told the chauffeur, “To the hospital.”

Danielle looked at the neighborhood, her heart dropping to her stomach. It was so close yet so far. She knew she could not say anything as she was the one who messed up.

Once at the hospital, Karl took her to the orthopedics.

The doctor asked Danielle where it hurt, and she blushed. “I-It doesn’t hurt anywhere.”

After giving Karl a puzzled look, the doctor said, “Miss, you’re here at the hospital for an examination. I need you to work with me.”

Karl folded his arms and said indifferently, “Give her a comprehensive checkup.”

Danielle replied, “No, no. How much will that cost? I’m not doing it.”

“You’re doing the examination, and I’m paying for it. I don’t want you to come back and claim that you’re unwell as a result of the car accident.”

Danielle snapped an angry look at him. “I would never do that.”

“It’s difficult to know what people are really like. Someone said she was too busy with her graduation thesis to tutor my brother anymore, but it turned out she was just lying. Liars can be very convincing even though they look harmless.”

Danielle freaked out. “I…”

She had only used that excuse to get out of potentially awkward situations with him.

The doctor wrote out a prescription for tests, and the nurse took her to the examination room.

As Danielle walked out of the doctor’s office, she secretly asked the nurse, “How much does the comprehensive examination cost?”

The nurse glanced at her. “Around 6,000 bucks.”

Danielle snatched the prescription from the nurse and limped her way back to Karl.

“I want to have a word with you.”

“Go on.”

Danielle bit her lip. “I don’t need a checkup. My foot is fine. It’s not what’s causing me pain, but my—”

She lowered her head and blushed.

Karl frowned. “But what?”

She lifted her chin and glared at him. “It hurts down there.”
