(Dean’s perspective)

So, I met a weird guy today.

Oh, I forgot to introduce myself. I’m Dean. And I’m just your run out of mill guy who’s got a massive student’s debt and no way to actually pay it off, so I had to actually work as a waiter in a high-end restaurant with a rather decent pay rather than working the job that you learned the degree for. That’s how life is for me. Just unfair.

And the massive disparity between me and the others was really apparent when I started working here. All these people freely spend their money on their significant other, while I’m here scrounging for a single penny. It’s not like I’m blaming the rich for it or anything. I mean, there’s no point in doing that. I’m blaming my destiny more than anything, if you ask me. My crappy destiny that led me to be born into a rather average family that doesn’t have the financial stability to actually support their son’s needs. But it’s not that I can blame my parents for it either. They’ve worked really hard to get me to the point that I am. I’m just disappointed that after all their efforts, I ended up as a waiter.

Anyhow, back to the main point. Throughout my time working here in this restaurant, I’ve been able to encounter a plethora of people of different characteristics. I’ve seen some very nice people; I’ve seen some who could literally die and this world would be a better place and everyone in between. But this was the first time that I saw such a person.

Sam; that was his name. He, well… He caught my eyes—everyone’s eyes in fact, when his date made a big fuss about him spending way too much on his first date when she expected a simple one. I mean, I couldn’t blame her for that since I’d be freaked out as well if someone pulled out all stops on the very first date, you know? But I was slightly intrigued as well. Like, you usually hold back most of your cards when you go on a first date so that you could spice up stuff later, but then there was this guy who went all guns blazing. Now imagine if this one succeeded and he got to go on a second date with her, how is he even gonna top this one?

So, this guy; Sam, slammed his head onto the table and sobbed a little when the woman left. We were aware that he was being a hindrance to others with those actions of his, but everyone saw what he went through, so they were feeling slightly sorry for him and since no one was complaining, we decided not to take any action as well.

However, when we did that, we didn’t expect him to just doze off just like that. So, I had no choice but to act up since no one else did. And that was one regrettable decision if you ask me. He was… eccentric to say the least. I had no idea why he was saying half the things that he was saying to me or whether he was sane when he said those things as well. So, all in all, he was a huge pain in the ass and a nuisance for me.

But here’s the thing. I tolerated him most of the time when he said random shit, due to the fact that handling customers like this was part of my job as well. And I kinda felt bad for the guy since he looked like he was in the gutter after the girl left him. However, when he asked me to carry him outside, things escalated. No longer was he just a weird guy, he now turned into a full-on creep. And I didn’t want to associate with a creep like him.

Then he spent a whole lot of time explaining that wasn’t the case and I have no idea how, but he managed to win me back into carrying him. I mean, I was pretty sure that I wasn’t gonna carry him anyway and there I was, doing the thing that I didn’t expect myself to do. Life, I guess.

Now, more than all of this, the one thing that really struck me about the guy was when he tipped me the random number that I just spouted. That was when I realized that he was batshit crazy and I probably shouldn’t associate with him any longer. I mean, any normal person would freak out if someone does something like this, right?

There was something about him, though… It’s the pity factor, I believe, that somehow made me follow through the stuff he asked me to do. I actually helped him out of the restaurant. But surely, he didn’t seem like he was in the right condition to head to his house. I mean, the guy who could barely get up off his table is surely not in the shape to walk to his house. I was aware of that.

Here’s the thing though. My job was over the moment we both stepped out of the restaurant. I could’ve easily left him there and minded my own business. But sometimes in life, you do something because you feel like doing that. That’s how I felt about this as well. I wanted to kinda help him. Maybe it’s just my inner instinct speaking out to me that the guy would get trashed if someone doesn’t help him get to his house, or maybe it’s just my mind being all grateful about the guy giving me such a tip. Either way, I made a decision that I don’t usually make.

I went straight back to the boss and asked him to let me off a little early. I don’t usually do that, so my boss was actually fine with it. So, I quickly changed my clothes and headed out to the person who was patiently waiting for me.

“So….” I mumbled. “Yea?” “Here it is. My apartment.” I spoke. “Oh…” Dean realized what was going on and stopped in his tracks. We both stood awkwardly in front of my apartment. Look, I really like talking and this guy before me managed to listen to every single one of the bullshits that I uttered. So, I looked upon him favorably. And the fact that he talked quite a lot as well only increased the favorability points that I had for him, to be honest. “I’m sorry.” Martina spoke, as she looked at me with her dead eyes. “What happened? What did I do wrong?” I asked. I didn’t get it. I didn’t know why everything ended up the way it ended up. So, I felt like I had the right to know at the very least. “Umm, well. You didn’t actually do anything wrong. I mean, you were good! You were really nice to me. Way too nice, in fact.” She turned her head away from me as she said that. “Ah, is that it then? The fact that I treated you way too nicely?” I asked her. Is this what the kids these days call a simp-like behavior? But, for real, I’m pretty sure that I haven’t done anything like that. It wasn’t something that I planned on doing, but it was a good sleep nonetheless. And now that I’ve been woken up from my slumber, I’m feeling quite empty. “What is it?” I asked, even though I knew what was going on. Sometimes I like to do things like this just to make some sort of passing conversation. And at that point, I desperately needed one, but this guy surely didn’t seem like he would be interested in one by the looks of it. “Sir, it’s time to close. So, you have to leave now.” He spoke. “Ah, very well. First, my date ditches me and now you guys as well. It’s all fine though. It’s all perfectly fine.” I sighed. It’s not like I wanted to place the blame on a restaurant chain of all people, but the people that I could actually blame were thinning out and I couldn’t help it. “Sir, we are a restaurant.” The man s
