She took another sip of her tea when she heard her phone ringing.
She knew it was her husband. For the first time she wondered should she answer it. She knew in that same moment she didn’t have a choice she had to answer it. She picked the phone up from the counter she had placed it on earlier.
“Hello.”
“Darling, it’s over with. I’m sending Pete to come and get you. Be ready.”
He hung up.
She put the phone back down on the counter. It was the worst news she’d heard. She wished she could have more time, but knew it wasn’t possible. She put her cup of tea down, walked over by the back door, and retrieved her hunter green jacket. Then she put on her boots and went outside.
Elayna couldn’t say she was elated to see her husband, because she honestly wasn’t. While on the plane back to her ‘normal’ life she was able to access the news and catch up on the week she had missed. Everything she and Pete had discussed in the car pertaining to her husband and the Alvarez situation turned out the way he said it would. Her husband now owned the majority of one of South America’s largest produce companies. Alvarez was being tried and convicted on money laundering and drug trafficking charges. No one seemed to associate her husbands ties with him in any criminalistic way, only that he was the one to pick up the pieces and salvage what name was left for the Alvarez family for the sake of their new business relationship. The media had also played out that Elayna had went to a spa retreat in the mountains the same day her husband had left her there with Alvarez. She saw that one papara
“Leave,” was all he said to her. She did as he commanded, making sure to grab her purse and coat on the way out. She rushed out of his study. Once she was out she quickly walked upstairs and went to her side of the house. Once she was inside of her Suite she closed her bedroom doors and took her tattered clothes off. She felt dirty and used in her own home, by her own husband. She went into the bathroom and turned the shower on. She looked at the time and noticed it was almost midnight. She got into the shower and washed and brushed her shame away. She felt conflicted. The feelings she felt with her husband should have been the feelings she had felt with Nick, but that hadn't been the case. Nick made her feel cherished and loved. Her husband made her feel chea
A thought she had never considered, until now, when she saw the hurt and jealousy in his eyes. She thought about him for the rest of the day, and all through her welcome home party. She was going through the motions but making sure to still be the classic Elayna King her husband had pummeled in her since their earlier years together. Bradley’s abuse was becoming dull and routine and she wondered if she could handle three more years with these staunch, snobby people and her husband’s boring stories that always revolved around his money in some way. She didn’t see Nick here tonight and she wondered if it had anything to do with her and what had occured between them earlier today. She tried to shake it off, but knew she couldn’t. He was apart of her now. The people at her party had no idea what they were celebrating. They had no idea she had been in
18 Hours ago…Nick had no idea how he was going to get to Elayna. He had watched her very closely. Making sure not to be seen, of course. He followed her from the time he had saw her exit her home driving her own vehicle to her makeup artist friends home. He was a little surprised at first that Bradley had let her out of his sight, alone. A little under thirty minutes later he saw Mr. King’s limo pull up in front of Danita’s home. He had been using binoculars from where he parked. Thy were state of the art. He was able to Danita’s facial expression and read her lips. She did not like Mr. King, or the fact he as trying to intimidate her. He instantly liked Danita.
“You two love birds needed a moment alone huh. I hope one day my man-” she gasped. And quickly ran over to her. “Elayna,..Mrs. King, are you alright?” Elayna smiled and nodded. “I will be.”She whispered. “You know, I’m here for you, girl. If you ever need a place to stay or…” She trailed off. “Thank you. I just seem to make him angry lately. He is under a lot of pressure and I shouldn't be adding to it. It will pass...hopefully.” Danita wanted to object but knew it wasn't her place. So instead, she turned her curling irons back on and re-touched up her hair and makeup. After that she assisted her into the strapless black sweetheart gown. She covered up the dark bruise on the back of her shoulder. Her neck
She jumped up from the stone bench and her husband yanked her by her arm, pulling her close to him. She stumbled, not quite falling. Nick took a step forward. She held her hand up to signal Nick not to do anything, and he obeyed. “It’s time to give my annual speech. You're introducing me. They've been looking for you.” He reminded her. He was talking to her like she was a child. “I’m so sorry.” She apologized. “I know your sorry, now apologize.” He barked. Nick was appalled once more at the way Mr.King spoke to Elayna. She looked made sure her expression held no emotion. It was all in her hazel eyes. The anger. The fear. The submission. She looked down then.
He walked over to her then. “Are you alright, Elayna?” He asked her. He had wanted to ask her that all night. “Oh, Nick, ….” She wanted to say more. She didn’t feel safe inside of her own home. “Please, lock the door.” He quickly locked the door and was back by her side in seconds He gently turned her to him. He softly touched her upper arms. “Elayna, please, tell me. Did he hurt you?” He saw the sadness in her eyes then. She was close to tears. “He always hurts me,Nick.” She whispered. She hugged him then and felt the dam of tears she’d been holding back since earlier this evening come forward. She cried freely and felt Nick’s strong, muscular, arms wrapped around her. She f
Elayna felt refreshed and more like she had a better grip on things tonight than any other night since she had arrived back to her “normal” life. Though nothing was normal. She barely saw her husband after entertaining hundreds of people, and when she did he hurt her mercilessly. Her daily schedule was beginning to fill up as well, and it made the days go by. Last night had been her first real sleep back home, and she knew it was thanks to Nick. He had fulfilled her in a way she could only dream about sexually and emotionally last night. He seemed to understand her on a deeper, more intimate level and she was frightened by the transparency and vulnerability she felt when he made love to her. She wanted to protect him and that blissful feeling. The only way to do that would be to sever the tie with him. She had to end it before this flame scorched them b
