Katherine POV
I arrived outside of my husband’s office apprehensively. Greg Combs, my husband of five years, had been avoiding my calls since last week. “Katherine, what are you doing here?” My husband’s secretary asked strangely. Her gaze shifted to Greg's closed door. “Is Greg around? Can I see him?” I asked tiredly. “He’s in a meeting. I don’t think he can see you right now.” Her tone sounded weird. I looked around us. Everyone’s busy but I knew that they were listening. It was common knowledge that my husband Greg forbids me from coming to the office especially since they were busy with the ongoing merger with SF conglomerate, a business giant in robotics owned by self-made billionaire Lucas Sanders. On ordinary days, I wouldn’t defy Greg’s orders, but not today. The hospital informed me that Greg failed to pay for our daughter’s operation which was due today. I tried appealing to Lorrie, his secretary. “I need to talk to him. He was not answering my call.” I said, feeling desperate. Lorrie looked regretfully at me before shaking her head. “I am sorry, Katherine.” Her voice trailed off, cluing me in. She's not going to give me some slack, I realized. But I can't let her words deter me. I need to see Greg. I skipped past Lorrie to slip through Greg's door. I was relieved to find out it was not locked and I was able to get in. My hands made quick work of the lock so Lorrie can’t follow me. I breathed a sigh of relief when I successfully shut her out, but the moment I turned around, I instantly regretted my decision because right then, my world began to crumble. A trail of clothes belonging to a man and a woman greeted me. Then, I heard moans. Without thinking, I followed the sound until it brought me outside of Greg’s private quarters. He maintains this room for when work piled up. The door was slightly ajar, allowing me a partial view of a woman’s bare back while she was bouncing on my husband’s lap. I winced when I heard a familiar voice shout. “That’s it, Greg. F*ster!” My chest tightened when I realized what was happening. I stood there frozen, trying to digest what I had been trying to ignore this whole time. Greg, the man who promised to be a good husband to me, had changed. It was a gradual change, but since I was busy with our daughter Erin’s hospitalization, I never suspected that he would be having an affair. But here is my proof. The answer to his long office hours, going out of the house in the middle of the night, endless hours on the phone. It’s all right before my eyes. I bit my lip as I choked back a sob, feeling like my world collapsed. I could not breathe while I stared at them doing the deed. I don’t know how long I stood there, watching them, but as their moans, groans, and d*rty talks filled the air, I could not help feeling like I was dying inside. I had given up everything for Greg. I had been a dutiful wife. I supported him with his work, and this is what I get - his betrayal. My world spun at the circumstance facing me and felt like I was going to keel over any moment at the realization that I had been betrayed by the only man I trusted the most. When they finished, there was silence, and then I heard footsteps. I was so caught up in pain that I was not able to react quickly. Greg’s stunned face greeted me when he saw me standing outside the door to his private room, my hand covering my mouth. “What are you doing here, Katherine?” He asked impatiently. I looked at his naked frame and felt anger welled up inside me, knowing what he had been doing on the other side of the door. “Why Greg?” I asked, choking back a sob. Greg looked down but before he did that, I saw a trace of guilt and regret crossed over his feature, but it was gone fast. “Greg, darling.” A woman’s familiar voice carried its weight to our senses that we were both jarred into attention. I looked at her, my husband’s mistress, and my heart squeezed painfully in my chest. My eyes darted from her to Greg and back to her. “How could you, Noreen? I trusted you, and believed you were my friend. How can you betray my trust?” Tears flowed freely down my cheek at this blatant betrayal by the two people I trusted most. Greg, my husband of five years, and Noreen, my friend, confidante and godmother to my daughter, Erin. “Don’t blame Noreen. She has not done anything wrong.” Greg cut in. He was defending her. As if it was not enough, Greg protectively snaked his around her waist, pulling her body to him in comfort. Greg’s action only showed me that he places Noreen in high regard. Even when we were together, Greg was never protective of my feelings. I smiled bitterly when it all became clear to me now. Greg never comforted me when he knew that he made me cry. He even acted like nothing happened the next day. The comparison made the ache even more painful that I had to raise my head like a drowning man to take a huge gulp of air. “I am sorry, Katherine. The last five years had been a mistake.” Greg told me with a sincerity that cut through my soul. I bit my lip, unsure where this is heading. “What do you mean?” Greg rustled his hair and sighed. “I don’t love you anymore.” he told me, looking at me straight in the eye. “Such perfect timing, Greg. Just when I needed strength for our daughter’s operation today.” This time, Greg did not even flinch when he told me. “About her operation. I can’t carry the weight of her hospital bills anymore. We both know that she is not my daughter and I have to stop helping her. If you want, find her father. Find the man who knocked you up five years ago and make him be responsible for his own daughter.” Greg told me, shattering my hopes and my heart even further.Katherine POV“Please, Greg. Don’t do this. Erin needs you.” I begged, but it seemed to have fallen on deaf ears. Greg brushed past me to pick their scattered clothes on the floor. He gently pushed Noreen toward his private room before following her, shutting it firmly and leaving me outside feeling like a fool.“Where is Greg?” A voice called my attention. In my absorption of my pain, I did not realize that someone had barged in on the office. Startled, I quickly wiped my tears away and turned my head toward the direction of the door. I was surprised to see Lucas Sanders, Greg’s new boss coming in, playing with a key in his hand and realized it was a duplicate key to this office. Lucas strode toward me, his eyes narrowing as he studied my face. I stepped back, cringing inside, hating the inspection because it made me feel exposed.“What happened?” He asked curiously, staring at me as if he could see through my soul. I don’t know if it was just me, but since the conference meeti
Katherine POVThis is the ultimate humiliation. Greg is divorcing me with his mistress by his side.My chest heaves as I wordlessly march toward Greg’s desk, slapped the paper atop it and snatched the pen from its holder before shakily affixing my signature on the document. Rage that I had never known took over, making my body shake uncontrollably. “There. All done!” I told him, shoving the document to his chest. Greg almost stumbled when he grabbed it with his hands. I don’t care. I would have wanted him to fall so hard so that he may experience at least a modicum of the pain he was inflicting on me. My bad. Then, I shot Noreen a glare. She sat back on the couch, preening at my expense. “Whew! Signing the divorce paper is the most sensible thing you have done. At least Greg won’t have to put up with the farce you call marriage.” She muttered in disdain while she inspected her well-maintained fingernails with care. I snorted. Now, her claws are showing. I realized now that Nore
Katherine POVI don’t know what to make of his call, or why the sudden need to see me after I signed our divorce papers. I have high hopes that Greg had a change of mind. Not about the divorce but about helping Erin. I knew that there’s no way Greg is going to change his mind about our marriage. I had been feeling the gradual change in him since two years ago. I ignored the signs because I trusted him, but now, I realized that I placed my trust in the wrong man. A few minutes later, I found myself hesitating outside the cafe where Greg said he would meet me. Trepidation filled me before I made up my mind and pushed the door open.I walked in and instantly saw Greg. Thankfully, he was alone. “What do you want?” My voice sounded flat when I stopped by Greg’s table, but inside, I was nervous. I kept clenching and unclenching my hands as I waited for him to take his sweet time placing his phone on the side before deigning to look up at me. “You must be in such a hurry to come he
Katherine POVThe kiss jolted me. I never expected the aloof and standoffish Lucas Sanders to be capable of doing something like this.He hated me. I was sure of it. But why does his kiss tell me otherwise? There was anger, longing, affection, and something else which I could not define. I was like a statue, and for a few seconds, I did not respond until he growled, using that distinct tone when he said my name. “Kiss me back, Katherine.” I did not know what to do.I was shocked because for the first time in my life, I felt excitement. Heat pooled in my stomach, making my body tremble. Then, he lightly bit my lower lip, making it tingle, sending a low-voltage electric current coursing through my spine, and settling in the pit of my stomach. I shivered, not in fear, but in something else. Despite my misgivings, I shyly opened my lips when the tip of his tongue skimmed the inner seam. Then, I mimicked his actions. I kissed him back. This time, with so much unspent passion. This
Katherine POVI was not a perfect mom, but Erin’s words made me feel like somehow, in my past life, I did something good to deserve her, and it made me want to protect her more. “Mrs. Combs? Your phone had been ringing nonstop. I believe it was urgent.” The nurse prepping Erin for the operation peeked out the door to hand me my phone. I took it, grimacing when I saw the caller’s ID. It was Greg. Gingerly, I slid open my phone, and Greg’s furious voice came on the line. “You b*tch! Give me back my money! You did not fulfill the end of the bargain. Lucas Sanders fired me. I must have my money back.” Greg demanded from the other line. My heart sank. I knew, from the way my conversation with Lucas Sanders ended, that this might happen. But I never expected him to act so fast. “I already paid the hospital, Greg. The money is gone.” I admitted nervously. There was an ominous silence on the other end, and my heart started thudding hard in my chest.“Then, you better pay me back r
Lucas POV“Is he gone?” “Yes, boss.” Dan Burns, my assistant, informed me. I leaned my head on the back of my executive chair and closed my eyes, appreciating the reprieve the silence outside my office offered me. Greg Combs had been banging on my office door nonstop, creating a ruckus on my floor, right after I sent down the memo that would fire him from his post, effective immediately. I cut him off totally, but not without paying him off handsomely. In fact, with the amount I paid him, he could retire in affluence if he chose to do so. “He’s threatening to sue you.” Oliver Mans, my lawyer and best friend said when he arrived at my office a few minutes ago. I shrugged and took the pen off my table and let it roll on my fingers. “That’s where you come in. Our contract was binding. There is nothing he could do about it.” I explained. “Yeah, but adding a little clause about ethics in the company.” Oliver tailed it with a snort. I stood up.“You know that I hated cheaters. I
Katherine POV“Mommy.” I woke up to a faint voice and a nudge on my arm. “Erin.” My hands went to my face to rub it before standing up to lean over my daughter. Erin tried to sit up, but I was quick to assist her. “Careful, honey. The doctor said not to overexert yourself.” I reminded her, smoothing the top of her head before tucking the loose strands of her long, glossy black hair to the back of her ear. Erin’s small hands stalled my movement when her fingers glided to my face and under my eyes, where I was sure bags could be seen. “The nurse broke her promise. I told her to hold your hand so you wouldn’t be sad.” I bit my lip because a sob threatened to slip past them. “Hush, honey. She was there.”“You still cried.” Erin looked sad, making me quickly shake my head in response. “I am not. I just did not have enough sleep. Doctors and nurses kept coming and going through the night to check on you.” It was the truth. During the operation, Erin’s heart stopped beating for a
Katherine POV“Finally, everything made sense,” Greg muttered.Judging from the way his expression changed abruptly, I could easily tell the impact of this scene on Greg’s suspicious mind. I was about to explain, but he was already stomping off.If the door to Erin’s room did not open at that exact moment to reveal Noreen, Greg would have left her behind in his haste. “Greg, wait up,” Noreen called him, scrambling to reach him. Her clacking heels echoed around us as she ran after him. Greg did not stop, but eventually, Noreen caught up to him. They argued briefly based on their body language before resuming their walk. After they left, it was only then that I realized how close Lucas Sanders and I were. Our skin touched, making me acutely aware of him as a man.Goosebumps formed on my skin.My heart beat fast as images of our heated kiss came to my mind. I instantly faltered, feeling self-conscious all of a sudden. I realized I couldn't be alone with Lucas Sanders. He is dang
Katherine POVI love the hope that I gleaned from his words, but the part of me who was reeling from the changes that had happened in my life since I knew him had so many misgivings. I don’t know what or who to trust anymore. All I know is that I have to be wary because this can all disappear in the blink of an eye. “B-but…” My voice trailed off when he took my hand.I felt tingles when he kissed the knuckles, all the way to my heart. “Think about Erin. Don’t you want to give her the family she deserves? Our daughter needs a family. She needs us.” He was winning the argument there. Of course, I wanted to give Erin a family. That is why I stayed with Greg even though I felt Erin and I were becoming more of an encumbrance to him, especially when Erin got sick. I shut my eyes, thinking deeply. This is not just about me. This is about my daughter. “W-what if we fail? What if love didn’t happen in the end? I don’t want Erin to suffer. She already bore the trauma from my failed marr
Lucas POV“Greg married me because he felt guilty. He was Noreen’s passenger when their car collided with my family’s car. My parents were dead on the spot. I was lucky to be alive, but I stayed in a coma for two months.”“I did not run away with Greg.”I clenched my fists as remorse filled me.I closed my eyes because the pain in Katherine’s eyes was overwhelming. It told me how I had ruined our lives. The glaring fact remains the same. I did not trust her enough. When I woke up this morning, I was pumped up about courting Katherine and showing her that it was worth investing in me.But our conversation turned out to be a failure.“You could have done something to find us, but you didn’t. If only you had more faith in me, maybe we wouldn’t be in this mess. Maybe Erin wouldn’t have to endure growing up in a broken home. “
Katherine POVLucas Sanders’ face turned beet red. I saw Sara’s eyes widen, reflecting my own shock at this latest development in our lives. “Daddy?” I asked. Lucas grabbed my hand again to leave the apartment. He marched back to my apartment with me in tow. When we reached the living room, he dropped my hand, and I felt bereft of his presence. Then, he turned to me. “She knows you are her father.” I felt a little let-down. I thought I would be there when he told her. I wanted to see how my daughter would react. I was sure she would be delighted to know that the man she liked so much was her real father. But I was deprived of the opportunity to witness such a beautiful moment. I felt cheated. “She didn’t.” Now, that made everything murky. “She called you Daddy. You told her you are her father.” The proof was in the pudding. Was there any other way to explain it? Lucas tutted when he saw the doubt written all over my face. “You really painted an ugly picture of me in
Katherine POVI woke up feeling refreshed. It was the first time I felt like this in years. I yawned and stretched my arms over my head. It was peaceful. I closed my eyes once more to savor the serenity of my surroundings. It dawned on me that it shouldn’t have been this peaceful with Erin around. I bolted from the bed, eyes scanning my room. The light from the sun passing through the glass window told me it was morning and it was late!“Erin! Sara!” I cried, hurriedly opening my door to go out. In the living room, my chest expanded when I took a whiff of something divine! Bacon. Eggs. Muffin. My mouth watered, and my stomach began to grumble. My feet carried me to the kitchen, where I found Lucas Sanders in front of my stove. It was where the rich, flavorful aroma was coming from. And he was naked from the waist up. The realization that he was in my kitchen, flexing his back muscles did something to me. Awareness spreads through every pore of my body, and with it comes shy
Lucas POV“Aren’t you going to leave?” I was startled when Katherine asked me that question. My eyes instantly riveted to her. I watched when she tried futilely to fight back a yawn and lost the battle when she ended up covering her mouth with her hand. I could tell how she was trying hard to keep her eyes open, but the urge to sleep was strong. The only thing that was preventing her from totally submitting to sweet oblivion was my presence in her home.“I will carry Erin to her bed.” She offered. She stood from the couch to take our daughter from me, but Erin’s hands tightened on my neck. She did not want to let go. Katherine sighed. “You can go to bed,” I told her. “I will take care of Erin.” Despite the assurance, she did not leave the sofa. I watched her valiantly fight sleep, and our talk back at the hospital came to my mind. I understand her misgivings. She lost her memory. She did not know me. But we have a daughter that I would fight tooth and nail to share custody
Lucas POVI saw her blush, but it made me want to lean in a little closer to do what I had wanted to do since day one. But I was deprived of fulfilling my secret wish when the door opened, and Oliver walked in. My mood soured, especially when my gaze met Oliver’s knowing grin. “Perfect timing, bro.” I greeted, pulling my face away from Katherine, who looked awkward at the interruption. Forcing a smile on my face, I went to meet my best friend halfway.“Uncle Olly!” Erin looked up from the dolls she was playing with.Oliver walked toward Erin and ruffled her hair. “Hello, Erin. How are you?” Erin beamed at him. “I am fine. Mommy’s not, though. Do you think Uncle Matt will make her stay here for a long time?” She asked innocently. Maybe she was thinking about her confinement, which lasted for months. “Of course not. Actually, I came here to tell you that your Mommy will be discharged now.” Then, he looked in my direction. “I already processed the bill per your instructions.
Katherine POV“Mommy, wake up!” Erin’s childish voice was the first thing I noticed when I gained consciousness. I did not know how long I was out, but it felt nice to hear my little girl’s voice, even if it was just in my dreams. Oh, how I wish to hug and cuddle with Erin. With my eyes closed, I lifted my arms, hoping to close it around her small body. “Ahhh!” Erin exclaimed in surprise. Shocked, I opened my eyes instantly to my daughter’s warm presence. Happiness filled me when I burrowed my face into her downy head to inhale her sweet baby scent. Instantly, I felt relieved. Whatever was bothering me these past few days seemed insignificant with Erin around.Erin pulled away. The tips of her fingers wandered around my face. I closed my eyes to savor the gentle touch.Erin thought I was falling asleep again, so she forced my eyes open. “Mommy! Wake up!” I indulged her. Nothing in this world can make me say no to my little girl. When she saw me open my eyes, Erin grinned
Katherine POVMs. Fielding?" I nervously looked up to see Dan Burns walking toward me. I sat up from the lounge chair outside Lucas Sanders’ office and offered my hand for a handshake, but I withdrew it when I noticed the tiny tremors shaking it. Pretending nonchalance, I looked pointedly at my wristwatch. It was lunchtime, but the mighty Lucas Sanders ordered me to meet him here. He called me personally, but he routed the order through Lorrie, leaving me no other choice. I could not say no because it would give rise to speculation on Lorrie’s part. And that was something I wanted to avoid as much as possible.I already figured in two office scandals. I do not want to add more to the list. So, despite my aversion to seeing him after our last phone call, I reluctantly agreed, and now here I am. A nervous wreck. Dan pivoted on his heels in the direction of Lucas Sanders’ office. "They are in the conference room." He informed me.I automatically shifted and stepped forward to fo
Katherine POV“That pompous, arrogant a*s!” I ranted at Veronica when she called me that evening. “What was wrong?” Veronica sounded confused. I get it. She did not expect me to burst into anger about our boss, not when we parted on good terms this morning. I took deep breaths. I wanted to calm myself, but every time I think about Lucas Sanders, blood rushes to my head in anger. “I thought you were getting along well. Lucas Sanders likes Erin, and Erin likes him a lot.” I bit my tongue as another expletive loomed out of my lips if I had not been distracted by a grunt coming from Erin.Automatically, my eyes shifted to the bed to check on my daughter. She was sleeping soundly, which made me heave a sigh.“Sorry, Erin made a sound. I thought I woke her up.”“Okay, what happened to make you this mad?” Veronica pressed. I fussed a little over my little girl while I reported what happened to my girl. “The outing wore Erin out. The boss panicked, and he sent her to St. Martin’s
