Katherine POV
I don’t know what to make of his call, or why the sudden need to see me after I signed our divorce papers.
I have high hopes that Greg had a change of mind. Not about the divorce but about helping Erin. I knew that there’s no way Greg is going to change his mind about our marriage.
I had been feeling the gradual change in him since two years ago. I ignored the signs because I trusted him, but now, I realized that I placed my trust in the wrong man.
A few minutes later, I found myself hesitating outside the cafe where Greg said he would meet me.
Trepidation filled me before I made up my mind and pushed the door open.
I walked in and instantly saw Greg.
Thankfully, he was alone.
“What do you want?” My voice sounded flat when I stopped by Greg’s table, but inside, I was nervous.
I kept clenching and unclenching my hands as I waited for him to take his sweet time placing his phone on the side before deigning to look up at me.
“You must be in such a hurry to come here this fast.” He commented, smirking.
Greg did not invite me to sit, and let me stand on the side of the table.
“Lucas was determined to fire me. The HR had been harassing me.” He said, grimacing as if the admission cost him a fortune.
“And what does that have to do with me?” I asked, frowning, unable to get his intent.
At the back of my head, I kept thinking that he deserved it and more for what he did to me and my daughter. But I kept my mouth shut and waited for Greg to continue.
Greg sighed, placing his clasped hands on top of the table. It was only then that I noticed his familiar checkbook and pen.
My heart started to race fast.
Greg followed my line of vision and grinned.
“I know that you are in desperate need of my money for your brat’s surgery. Benny called me.”
He was referring to his bank manager friend, whom I approached earlier, but what made me furious was how he addressed my daughter - like she was some vermin.
“She has a name, and you are her father.” I told him bitterly.
"That is something I regretted, but let us not belabor the point." Greg said dismissively.
Then, he pulled the checkbook toward him and picked up the pen alongside it.
“I am willing to pay the hospital provided that you come to Lucas to beg on my account. Tell him everything was your fault. You pushed me to have an affair with Noreen because you are busy with your sick child.”
My jaw slackened at the audacity of this man. After cheating on me and dumping me right after, he had the gall to demand that I take the blame for everything. That it was actually my fault to be cheated on.
Greg finished signing the check. He peeled it from the booklet and left it on the table.
“I am expecting you wouldn't fail me, Katherine,” Greg said before standing up and leaving me gawking at the check.
My hand trembled when I picked it up, feeling a pinprick in my eyes.
Geeg’s callousness added to the desolation I felt.
Then, I received another call from the hospital, urging me to hurry.
I took a deep breath when I stood awkwardly outside Lucas Sanders’ office.
“I am here to see Mr. Sanders,” I informed Dan Burns, his assistant.
“Lucas is with someone right now. Are you willing to wait, Mrs. Combs?” He told me politely.
I winced at the name he used to address me, but correcting it required an explanation I am unwilling to go through.
Instead, I nodded and clutched my bag where I kept the check for my daughter’s surgery, scared I would lose it.
Dan pointed me to the waiting lounge, but then, the door to Lucas Sanders' office opened, and he walked out with a man.
They sported the same height and frame, but Lucas looked more authoritarian.
When the man glanced in my direction, a frown formed on his face. His reaction confused me, but I dismissed it because I don’t remember meeting the man before.
Before he left, the man stole another look before shaking his head. When he turned around a corner, Lucas Sanders shifted his cold gaze to me. “What do you want, Katherine?”
The sound of his voice, deep and sincere, made me question my motives for coming here. But I can’t back out now.
Greg already paid me to do this.
I squared my shoulders, swallowed my hesitations, and addressed him. “Can we talk?”
Lucas Sanders pointed to his office and let me precede him. Then, he closed the door and locked it.
“What do you want to talk about?” He asked, sitting down on his executive chair.
Our eyes met and I nervously licked my lips because it had suddenly gone dry.
“Can you not fire Greg?” I blurted out and bit my lip when I saw how his body stiffened.
Even with our distance, I could feel the displeasure coursing through his body.
I shook my head, realizing that it had been a bad idea coming here.
If there was one thing I knew about the man, he was fair. He punishes and rewards people equally.
Personally, I am wary of him, but his moral standards made him a person to be reckoned with, a respectable man in the business.
But I had to try. For my daughter.
“Please, Mr. Sanders. Don’t fire Greg. The company is all he has.”
Lucas Sanders whistled in disbelief, but I could see his jaw twitching in anger.
“I can’t believe that after all he has done to you, you are still taking his side. The man abused your trust. He used you, and yet you are here begging me for his welfare. Such devotion and love for a worthless man, Katherine.” His tone was insulting, but the way my name rolled out of his lips sent shivers up my spine.
I bit my lip and bowed my head in shame.
“I am not doing this for Greg. I am doing this for my daughter. She was in the hospital and I needed Greg’s money to pay for her surgery.” I admitted.
“She is his daughter, too. Isn’t he supposed to support her medical needs?”
Lucas' question made me falter. How can I admit to him that Erin was not Greg’s daughter when her conception had always been blurry to me. All I knew is that I woke up from the hospital bed and they said that I was pregnant. I don’t know who her father was.
Tension filled the room. I peeked at Lucas Sanders to see his body taut in sudden fury.
I stepped back nervously when Lucas Sanders abandoned his executive chair and walked toward me like a predator ready to snare his prey.
“Your husband is a j*rk.”
“We are divorced.” I told him reluctantly and saw his jaw clenched.
“At least, you had the sense to divorce him.”
I shook my head to correct him. “It was Greg who divorced me.”
I winced when I heard Lucas Sanders expel an expletive.
“So, not only did he divorce you, but he pulled out his support to your daughter.” Lucas bit out.
“I needed Greg’s money for my daughter's operation.” I admitted as shame gripped me.
Silence pervaded in the room. Nothing could be heard except the hum of the air conditioner.
Then, Lucas Sanders sliced through it and it shattered into tiny million pieces.
“If you can do anything for the sake of your daughter, then do it with me." He barked, making me flustered and out of sorts.
“I don’t understand.” I mumbled nervously, a frown forming on my face.
Our eyes connected, adding to the tense atmosphere.
My heart thumped fast.
I wanted to pull my eyes away, but couldn't.
"If you need money, then take my money. It was better than taking money from your cheater ex!” He spat out.
I did not get why he was so furious with me taking money from Greg. He was my ex-husband anyway.
His reaction stumped me.
Then, I was surprised when he pulled my chin toward him.
Everything happened so fast that I found Lucas Sanders’ head swooping down to capture my lips in a searing kiss that made the hairs on my neck and arms stand on end.
Katherine POVThe kiss jolted me. I never expected the aloof and standoffish Lucas Sanders to be capable of doing something like this.He hated me. I was sure of it. But why does his kiss tell me otherwise? There was anger, longing, affection, and something else which I could not define. I was like a statue, and for a few seconds, I did not respond until he growled, using that distinct tone when he said my name. “Kiss me back, Katherine.” I did not know what to do.I was shocked because for the first time in my life, I felt excitement. Heat pooled in my stomach, making my body tremble. Then, he lightly bit my lower lip, making it tingle, sending a low-voltage electric current coursing through my spine, and settling in the pit of my stomach. I shivered, not in fear, but in something else. Despite my misgivings, I shyly opened my lips when the tip of his tongue skimmed the inner seam. Then, I mimicked his actions. I kissed him back. This time, with so much unspent passion. This
Katherine POVI was not a perfect mom, but Erin’s words made me feel like somehow, in my past life, I did something good to deserve her, and it made me want to protect her more. “Mrs. Combs? Your phone had been ringing nonstop. I believe it was urgent.” The nurse prepping Erin for the operation peeked out the door to hand me my phone. I took it, grimacing when I saw the caller’s ID. It was Greg. Gingerly, I slid open my phone, and Greg’s furious voice came on the line. “You b*tch! Give me back my money! You did not fulfill the end of the bargain. Lucas Sanders fired me. I must have my money back.” Greg demanded from the other line. My heart sank. I knew, from the way my conversation with Lucas Sanders ended, that this might happen. But I never expected him to act so fast. “I already paid the hospital, Greg. The money is gone.” I admitted nervously. There was an ominous silence on the other end, and my heart started thudding hard in my chest.“Then, you better pay me back r
Lucas POV“Is he gone?” “Yes, boss.” Dan Burns, my assistant, informed me. I leaned my head on the back of my executive chair and closed my eyes, appreciating the reprieve the silence outside my office offered me. Greg Combs had been banging on my office door nonstop, creating a ruckus on my floor, right after I sent down the memo that would fire him from his post, effective immediately. I cut him off totally, but not without paying him off handsomely. In fact, with the amount I paid him, he could retire in affluence if he chose to do so. “He’s threatening to sue you.” Oliver Mans, my lawyer and best friend said when he arrived at my office a few minutes ago. I shrugged and took the pen off my table and let it roll on my fingers. “That’s where you come in. Our contract was binding. There is nothing he could do about it.” I explained. “Yeah, but adding a little clause about ethics in the company.” Oliver tailed it with a snort. I stood up.“You know that I hated cheaters. I
Katherine POV“Mommy.” I woke up to a faint voice and a nudge on my arm. “Erin.” My hands went to my face to rub it before standing up to lean over my daughter. Erin tried to sit up, but I was quick to assist her. “Careful, honey. The doctor said not to overexert yourself.” I reminded her, smoothing the top of her head before tucking the loose strands of her long, glossy black hair to the back of her ear. Erin’s small hands stalled my movement when her fingers glided to my face and under my eyes, where I was sure bags could be seen. “The nurse broke her promise. I told her to hold your hand so you wouldn’t be sad.” I bit my lip because a sob threatened to slip past them. “Hush, honey. She was there.”“You still cried.” Erin looked sad, making me quickly shake my head in response. “I am not. I just did not have enough sleep. Doctors and nurses kept coming and going through the night to check on you.” It was the truth. During the operation, Erin’s heart stopped beating for a
Katherine POV“Finally, everything made sense,” Greg muttered.Judging from the way his expression changed abruptly, I could easily tell the impact of this scene on Greg’s suspicious mind. I was about to explain, but he was already stomping off.If the door to Erin’s room did not open at that exact moment to reveal Noreen, Greg would have left her behind in his haste. “Greg, wait up,” Noreen called him, scrambling to reach him. Her clacking heels echoed around us as she ran after him. Greg did not stop, but eventually, Noreen caught up to him. They argued briefly based on their body language before resuming their walk. After they left, it was only then that I realized how close Lucas Sanders and I were. Our skin touched, making me acutely aware of him as a man.Goosebumps formed on my skin.My heart beat fast as images of our heated kiss came to my mind. I instantly faltered, feeling self-conscious all of a sudden. I realized I couldn't be alone with Lucas Sanders. He is dang
Katherine POVWhile I was busy watching Erin interact with our sponsors my phone rang. My brows knitted when the number registered on my phone was our house number, which was highly unusual. My gaze flitted back to Erin. Noting she was still busy with her guests, I decided to take the call outside.“Hello, missus. I think you should head over to the house quickly.” It was Sara, our housekeeper. There was an urgency in her tone that alerted me. Even the way she spoke tells me she was trying to be inconspicuous about the call. “What’s wrong?” I asked.“Your mother-in-law is in your bedroom ordering us to pack your things, and our little angel. Are you in some kind of trouble, missus?” She reported. Her voice quivered as she tried to squeeze all the information in one go. I sighed.I had been expecting this to happen, but not this soon. It’s only been a day since we signed the divorce papers, but Mary Combs, Greg’s mother, did not waste so much time. I knew that she did not like
Katherine POVJust as I had feared, Sara took the brunt of Mary's hatred for me.I arrived just when Mary was pushing Sara out of the house. Her face was livid in anger amidst Sara’s pleading voice.I could not stand the scene. I never approved of people wielding their power on those who can not defend themselves."Stop it! You had no right to abuse my employee!” I cried, stepping in.When she heard my voice, Sara hid behind my back. I protectively covered her and faced my former mother-in-law, who by now, was frothing in the mouth in anger. Sharp gaze zeroed in on me.
Katherine POV“Here, let me.” Lucas Sanders grabbed the suitcase I was holding. And because I was gripping it tightly, his large hand covered most of mine, allowing me to feel the natural warmth emanating from his palm.I shoved the thought out of my head. I can’t be distracted by the feel of Lucas Sanders’ hand.Without replying, I raised my foot to continue walking but was prevented from doing so because his hand now clamped my hand.“Let go!” I cried, shrugging off my shoulders to shake him away, but he persisted.Maybe it’s what made h
Lucas POVI watched the shock registering on Greg Combs and Katherine’s faces when I issued the declaration. It gave me immense pleasure letting this b*stard know that he made a mistake.I don’t intend to give Katherine up. Not for anything, now or ever. I took advantage of their surprise to slowly walk toward them. When I reached them, I snaked an arm around Katherine’s waist to show Greg that Katherine belonged to me and me alone. I watched in satisfaction when my action elicited a wince from Greg Combs. I wanted him to know that no amount of regret can change the past. It already happened. All we have to do is accept things as they are. If he had changed his mind and regretted the decision to divorce Katherine, then he could live in misery because I was never going to give her up for anything.“Katherine is mine,” I told the shocked Greg Combs.“She has always been mine to begin with.” I reiterated when he recovered from the initial shock. When he did, I saw a trace of regre
Katherine POVI stared blankly at him while I gripped my phone in my hand. I don’t know what to say. Greg looked so much like how I looked before when I found out that he was having an affair with Noreen Jacobs. I was looking at the face of betrayal. I shook my head in an attempt to discredit the accusation. All the while, I was acutely aware of the people around us. This is a sidewalk. Passersby would notice us and couldn’t help but have an earshot. Even if they did not mean to snoop, Greg’s voice was loud enough to be carried by the wind. Everyone within earshot could not help but hear what he had to say. “I saw you.” He spits out. A frown formed on my head. “Saw me where?” I was clearly confused and wanted to be enlightened. Greg did not disappoint as he began a monologue that depicted an unsavory image of me. “You came out of his car not just once but all the time since I decided to observe.”Then, he brushed his fingers to his oily hair and gave a self-deprecat
Katherine POVIt was funny to watch him stutter as he tried explaining to our daughter what we were doing. “A kiss is an expression of love.” He told Erin. “So you love my mommy?” Erin asked. He nodded.Erin seemed satisfied by his response, and Lucas began to relax.A moment later, Erin turned her head toward him and asked. “If you love mommy, why is that girl kissing you?” Erin looked like she was about to cry,Now, that was something I did not expect to hear. My eyes turned to Lucas sharply. I heard Lucas cough out loud before glancing in my direction. My right brow arched upon hearing the information, leaving Lucas unsure of how to react. I would have remained oblivious to the whole thing if Erin did not mention it. Lucas gulped. He shook his head and began explaining with his eyes trained on me, magnifying his guilt. “You just said it. She was kissing me, not the other way around.” Lucas explained. He was watching my face for any change, but I remained impassive. It
Katherine POVThe way Lucas looked at me tells me a lot about the engagement ring that had gone viral a few months ago.My chest constricted.“The ring was for you.” He said shyly when Duke left, confirming what I already knew in my heart. Then, he sat beside me on the couch. I did not know“I was buying something for Agatha, a token to show her that I was willing to see her more than a friend.” I felt a blockage in my airways when he began to tell me about the ring I saw in Agatha’s post. The one that gave me the impression that he was toying with me.“A solitaire diamond ring caught my eye. At that time, I hated you for lying and choosing Greg over me, but the ring kept tugging at me. I bypassed the ring and left, but there was this restlessness inside, a feeling of regret. I asked Dan to go back to Hugo’s Creations to buy the ring under his name,
Katherine POVI nodded, and this time I allowed him to pull me to his chest. Lucas wrapped his arms around me, lightly dropping a kiss on my forehead.“I love you.” He said, but I remained silent. Right now, I can not define what I felt for Lucas. There was attraction and some feelings, but not enough to consider it love. “I don’t know what to say,” I told him honestly and shook my head. There was a subtle shift in him. I must have hurt him by being honest. I cupped his chin to force him to meet my gaze. “You know you are special, and I am attracted to you. I also like how you are good to me and a great father to Erin.” I told him sincerely while looking into his eyes. “But not enough to love me.” His reply hinted at bitterness, and I pulled him nearer for a quick kiss. He took advantage of our position. He grabbed the back of my head to deepen the kiss. Lucas began exploring my mouth. He was nibbling my lips, sending tingles all over my body, and down to my toes. I pushe
Katherine’s POVI swallowed hard after being confronted by the fury in Agatha’s gaze. The loathing in her eyes shook me to the core. Lucas told me she used to be my best friend, but her facial expression showed nothing except hatred. “You shouldn’t have come back!” She snarled, causing a shiver of fear to run through my spine, creating goosebumps. If looks could kill, I would have been dead by now from Agatha’s piercingly cold glare. I covered Erin’s ears with my hands. I don’t want her to hear anything Agatha says. “Why did you have to come back? Why did you have to mess with our lives? Lucas is mine!” Agatha spat the words out.She looked half-crazed, frothing in the mouth in anger. I was tongue-tied. Even Noreen did not look at me like this; with pure unadulterated hatred.I shook my head as fear spread through me. Not for myself but for Erin. I had been avoiding this kind of scene when Lucas suggested we work on us. Agatha was his unfinished business. Now, everything is sp
Katherine POVWhen we entered Lucas’ office, we found Oliver and Vern still there talking. Vern dropped the sketch pad and pencil to a nearby table when he saw us coming in. He then unrolled his tape measure, asking his assistant to jot down the measurements. I nudged Erin, silently urging her to approach Vern. To my surprise, my little girl ignored me and walked straight to Oliver, who sat on the couch upon our arrival. “Don’t be bad next time, Uncle Olly, okay?” She sure sounded grown-up. She looked too little against Oliver's frame when she looked at him with her head tilted back. I bit my lips while Lucas grinned from ear to ear. Oliver, on the other hand, looked surprised. He grinned and gamely responded. “Yes, ma’am.” Erin nodded. She beckoned for Oliver to lean his head closer. He bent to bring his head closer, arms went around her little body. When they were close, Erin wrapped her small arms around his neck.“Thank you, Uncle Olly. You are my third favorite person
Katherine POVI watched in amusement how Lucas tried to appease Erin.“It’s not like that, Erin.”Erin crossed her arms to her chest, looking like Lucas looked earlier when he tried to block Oliver from me.“No! From now on, she is my mommy only!” Erin declared, brooking no argument.Lucas looked like he was about to cry.He was flustered and red while trying to control himself. While it amused me to see him try so hard to convince his stubborn daughter that it was not the same. It looked like Erin was getting the upper hand in this case.&
Katherine POV“Good morning, Katherine.” Lorrie greeted me when I stepped outside the elevator. She came out of the pantry bearing a mug of steaming coffee. I remembered the coffee Lucas and I shared that morning, and my heart began to beat faster than usual when I thought about the kiss. “Good morning, Lorrie. Any urgent tasks for me today?” I asked, stopping for a while.Lorrie shook her head. We walked alongside each other toward our office, talking about my schedules.I appreciate Lorrie for making my professional life super dandy.“You have a meeting at ten o’clock with the boss.” She informed me. My brows furrowed. I had no recollection of Lucas mentioning the meeting to me. But maybe Lucas did not know either because Dan handles his schedules. I began signing documents, and when I finished, I prepared for my ten o’clock meeting with the boss. Ten minutes before ten, clutching my notebook, pen, and report for our department, I left my office for the meeting. “I am going
