“I’m afraid we have a little problem. Harold is nowhere to be found.” Diane’s younger brother, Lucas, said worriedly, avoiding his sister’s gaze.
Diane felt a chill come over her at the sound of those seven words. She had been having a premonition all day, and now, it seemed that that premonition had come to pass.
“That’s not possible. Our wedding ceremony starts in less than fifteen minutes. How can he be missing?” Diane asked faintly, already hyperventilating.
“Just calm down, big sis. I’m certain we’ll find him. I’ll go and check again.” Lucas comforted his sister, but it was clear that even he didn’t believe his own words.
“No, you stay here. I’ll go look for him myself. I need to clear my head anyway. He’s probably just really nervous and went to get some air or something.” Diane said.
Before anyone could stop her, she got up and hurried out the door in search of her fiancé. She would not be able to bear the embarrassment if he turned out to be a no-show on their wedding day of all days.

Harold Collins sighed inwardly, wondering to himself the best way to get rid of the woman who was clinging to him and crying passionately, with her heavy makeup running down her face.
“But I love you! Why on earth will you choose her over me even after all this time? I can’t bear to watch you get married to that woman instead of me. Please, Harold. It’s not too late. You can call off your wedding with that woman right now before it’s too late.” Nicole Moore cried, clinging tightly to Harold.
‘“That woman,’ as you so casually put it, happens to be your best friend, and you’re supposed to play the role of her chief’s bridesmaid in a few minutes, Nicole. I’m going to get married to Diane because I’ve made up my mind to do so, and besides, I love her. You need to accept that.” Harold told Nicole.
He wondered briefly to himself if he could persuade her to stop crying and have a quickie with him, or at least, give him a quick blowjob before the ceremony. The thought of it excited him greatly.
“But it’s not fair and I love you!”
“You’re not listening to me, Nicole. What say you put that sweet and talented mouth of yours to good use and give me a blowjob instead of whining on this beautiful day? There’s no rule that says that we can’t continue with what we have after I’m married, you know. You’ll always have a special place in my heart. You know that. Besides, I’ve missed you and us so much.”
“Really?” Nicole asked, her tone doubtful.
“Come on, baby. God knows how I miss you. You know, since Diane got pregnant, she's so nervous about the baby that I haven't had sex with her.” Harold replied, trying to make his tone sound as sincere as he could.
He had come to see her because he was horny and the thrill of having sex with her just before he got married to another woman was great, but now, he was regretting coming to see her, because it didn’t look like she was interested in putting out.
There was no way he would pick her over Diane for marriage because Diane was more beautiful than she was, soft-spoken, and kind-hearted … everything that a woman was supposed to be, and everything that Nicole wasn’t, but there was no way he was going to tell Nicole that.
Nicole’s crying intensified at his last sentence.
“Did you marry her because she was pregnant? If I was …”
At that same moment, the door to the room in which they were, burst open and a visibly distraught Diane burst into the room.
Nicole and Harold froze in place in surprise, as they were not expecting anyone to burst into the room, while Diane stopped in her tracks, startled at the sight in front of her.
The relief on her face at having finally found Harold was fast turning into confusion and suspicion.
“There you are, my beloved wife-to-be!” Harold exclaimed heartily, hurrying over to meet Diane.
“What’s going on here? Everybody’s been looking for you, Harold.” Diane said warily, still trying to make sense of why her best friend and her fiancé were in a room alone in a room at the last minute to the start of her wedding.
“I know, but I had to comfort your best friend. She’s having a somewhat rough day.” Harold replied, thinking fast.
At that moment, Nicole, who had been backing them all this while, turned to face them, and Diane gasped out loud when she saw her face.
Diane hurried over to meet the other woman immediately, her expression worried because it was obvious that Nicole was very upset and had even been crying profusely.
“Oh, my God, babe! What’s wrong? Why are you crying?” Diane asked Nicole, who took in a deep, shuddering breath to answer, but Harold quickly spoke up from behind them.
“She got an offer to study abroad but didn’t want to tell you about it just yet because she didn’t want to spoil your mood on our wedding day. I know its great news, but it’s also a sad one because you guys are going to miss each other so much.” Harold said, with a subtle glance at Nicole that told her that she had better go with the story that he was telling Diane.
“Oh, bestie! I’m so happy for you, but you’re right. It would have been better for me to know after the ceremony because now, tears are gathering in my eyes, and I’m afraid that I'm going to ruin my makeup.” Diane exclaimed, gathering Nicole in her arms for a heartfelt hug, and trying desperately to control her tears.
The two women hugged each other, but of course, Nicole’s mind wasn’t in the act. Her eyes met Harold’s who winked at her and blew her a kiss, and she forced herself to smile a little.
At least, Harold was still willing to see her even after he got married to Diane, which surely had to mean that he wasn’t truly in love with Diane. The thought of that made her feel slightly better.
"I just heard you guys talk about pregnancy, I…" Diane started to say, but before she could finish speaking, Nicole quickly interrupted.
"I just found out you're pregnant. I'm your bestie, Diane. How could you keep such great news from me?”
"I just confirmed it a few days ago. I've been busy preparing for the wedding and looking for a chance to tell you. I hope it's not too late. Nicole, even though you’re going to be far away, I want you to please be my unborn baby’s godmother. Is that alright by you?”
“Oh, my God! So it’s true! Congratulations, bestie! That’s such an honor. Of course, I’ll be your baby’s godmother!” Nicole exclaimed, as Harold also made appropriate noises of elation at the news that Diane had just divulged to them.
“Then it’s settled. You’re such a good friend, and I wish you all the best in your studies. I can't wait for you to be done and come back home.” Diane said sadly, hugging Nicole again.
She was too emotional at that moment to notice the impatience on Harold’s face or the sneer that crossed Nicole’s face as she hugged her again.
FIVE YEARS LATERDiane was tired and famished as hell, but thankfully, she had finally finished the chores that she had been doing all day.She dropped the small cloth with which she was using to wipe surfaces clean and heaved a huge sigh.“Of course, you're tired, you lazy, good-for-nothing slob. I don’t know what the hell my son saw in you all those years ago, or why he keeps wasting his youthful years with a haggard, useless woman who can’t give him even one child!” Diane’s mother-in-law’s grating voice came out of nowhere.Diane sat up immediately, and the relief that she was feeling at being done with her numerous tasks, vanished immediately. However, she didn’t say a word, but instead, kept her expression meek and humble, because she knew what was coming. Her mother-in-law, Mrs. Collins, did not disappoint, but instead, went around, running her fingers on the surfaces that Diane had just cleaned, her lips curling with displeasure. Then she opened her mouth and vile words began
“Oh, my goodness! I cannot believe my eyes! I must be seeing things.” Diane exclaimed in blatant joy and surprise, rushing over to hug Nicole. The two women hugged for what felt like an eternity, and as they hugged, Nicole and Harold’s eyes met.She winked at him sultrily, her eyes heavy with promises of what was to come, but he averted his gaze from hers nervously, wishing that she hadn’t come. The whole ruckus alerted Mrs. Collins, and Harold’s sister, Evelyn, who came outside to see what the ruckus was all about.“Alright, ladies. I guess this means that the vacation has to be postponed. I have to get to work urgently because something just came up, anyway, so I’ll see all of you later. Have fun.” Harold said.He hopped into the idling car to make a hasty getaway from the awkward situation he knew was about to unfold with the presence of his mother and sister, leaving Diane to deal with their luggage.Diane didn’t mind that the vacation was cancelled though, because she was overjoy
After the two women had breakfast, Nicole all but dragged Diane all over town to get gifts for her parents. Then she insisted they visit them that same day because she had missed them so much. That was a lie, but Diane didn’t need to know that.“You should have taken today and even tomorrow to rest before coming to see them. You look so tired.” Diane told Nicole as they got out of the vehicle.“Oh, nonsense! Your parents are literally my parents as well. They raised me after my parents’ deaths, after all. I can spend the night here if I'm too tired to go back to my hotel after I visit them.” Was the reply.“Alright then,” Diane said. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis, were overjoyed to see both women and expressed their surprise at Nicole’s sudden appearance in the city. Not long after both women arrived, Diane’s older brother, Lucas, with whom both of them had grown up, came over to the house to see both of them. Apparently, his mother had sent word to him that they were around. He wa
Harold Collins had never been so humiliated in his life. The more he thought about the solid beating that he had received at the hands of his brother-in-law, the angrier and more humiliated he became. That asshole had literally floored him in a fight in front of his employees, making him look like a bloody weakling.Had it been it was another person who did this to him, he would have since pressed charges and made sure that the person faced the full wrath of the law. However, he couldn’t press charges against Lucas for some personal reasons, and the bastard knew it very well, which was why he had satisfied his anger and pummelled Harold to his satisfaction. All the same, Harold couldn’t go home the way he was currently looking, with his split lips and both of his eyes nearly swollen shut. If his mother saw him in his current state, then she might decide to press charges against Lucas on his behalf, and that would spell some trouble for him.So he left work a little early and headed o
The voice sent chills down Diane’s spine, and she turned slowly to face her mother-in-law, who was with Harold’s sister, knowing that what was going to come wasn’t going to be pleasant in the least bit.Her heart was beating in trepidation, and she hoped that Harold was going to defend her by standing up to his mother and sister this time around.“Oh, my goodness, Harold, honey. What on earth happened to your face?” Mrs. Collins asked in shock.“Mom, it’s nothing,” Harold replied, sounding faintly embarrassed.“I know it has something to do with this godforsaken woman that you’ve refused to let go of, not so? You horrid, ugly, good-for-nothing, barren witch! What on earth did you do to my son?” Mrs. Collins spat, advancing on Diane, who shrunk away from her in terror.“Mom, please stop it. Diane had nothing to do with it.” Harold begged his mother and told her what had happened.“Oh, so now you're lying to cover up for her, is that it? You think I'm a fool, huh?” Mrs. Collins continue
Nicole was greatly pissed, and rightfully so. It had been hours since Harold got up from the hotel bed and left without a solid explanation, discarding her like she was some whore that he picked up by the roadside. What annoyed her even more was that he refused to answer her calls. She had called him several times, but he was purposely ignoring the calls because his oh-so-precious Diane was in some so-called distress.“Yeah, right! That drama queen isn’t in any distress. She just wants to control Harold and she wants him all to herself.” Diane thought to herself spitefully.Well, since Harold was refusing to answer her calls, and she needed to know what he was doing, then she didn’t have any choice other than to call Diane to find out his whereabouts.“Bestie! How are you doing? Are you settling down fine?” Diane asked when she picked up the phone, sounding way too happy for Nicole’s liking.“I’m fine and I’m indeed settling down well. You sound happy.”“Oh, yes, I am. Harold and I de
Dinner that night was great, and the sex after dinner was even better, so much so that Harold forgot his concerns regarding Nicole, at least in the meantime. After they finished having sex, Harold excused himself to answer some emails on the porch, while Diane relaxed in the room, basking in the euphoria of the lovemaking bout that she and her husband had just had.Suddenly, a call came in from Nicole on Diane’s phone, and while Diane was overjoyed to hear from her friend at first, she soon noticed that Nicole’s voice sounded a little strange.“Babe, what’s wrong? You sound a little down. Is anything the matter?” Diane asked, at which point Nicole sighed heavily into the phone.“I wanted to ask you something.”“Sure, you know you can ask me anything at all.”“Okay, are you happy with the trip? Like is Harold treating you well and all that?”“Of course, I am, and he's treating me well. Harold is a gentleman. You know that. Is that what’s troubling you? That Harold isn’t treating me wel
The rest of the trip was ruined for Nicole because of the conversation that she had overheard, but somehow, she managed to pretend like everything was alright, while she thought of what to do.The first thing she did as soon as they got back from vacation was to hurry over to Nicole’s place, because of how down she was. Nicole never failed to lift her spirit whenever she was down.“I got you your favorite perfume,” Diane told Nicole after they had exchanged pleasantries, handing the perfume over to her.“Thank you, babe. You indeed are the best. Listen, I can’t help but notice that you look subdued. I hope my friend didn’t turn out to be right, after all, because I can't think of any other reason why you’ll look so down after just coming back from a romantic getaway.” Nicole said with great interest.“I …” Diane began, but she trailed off as fresh tears gathered in her eyes. She had cried a great deal in the past several days.“Diane! Is Harold truly cheating on you?!”“I … I’m not ex
Diane stared at the two old lines on the pregnancy test strip that showed that it was positive in utter disbelief. She had prepared for this possibility as much as she could in the time it took her to get back home from the hospital, but it still came as a rude shock to her. What on earth had her life come to? Here she was about to get divorced, with her soon to be ex-husband making a mockery of her all over the news for everyone to see, only to find out that she was carrying his child?Tears came unbidden to her eyes at this thought. No wonder she was always crying at the slightest inconvenience. Her hormones were working overtime.A few days later, the blood test was ready, and when she got it, there was no denying it any longer. She was indeed pregnant, and she had to make up her mind on what to do, as the pregnancy was advancing. It only took a few days for her to decide that she wanted to keep the baby. She had always wanted children, and after the struggle she went through befor
As the days passed, Diane's heart began to hurt less and less whenever she thought about Harold and Nicole being together. In fact, she tried her best to block them out of her mind. After that night when she called the cops on them, Harold reached out to her to apologize for his horrid behaviour via text, because she refused to take his calls. He had tried to reach out a few more times after that, and then he had abruptly ceased trying to communicate with her at all. She was relieved, to say the least. She was never going to go back to him, especially not with Nicole still in the picture, so there was no point in prolonging the inevitable. She had sent him fresh divorce papers, and was now waiting for him to sign them. Then one afternoon, while she was scanning through job applications so that she could apply for a job, she got another rude shock that had her questioning if she was truly getting over Harold and Nicole’s betrayal like she thought she was.She was alone at home, and the
“That’s no way to behave, Harold. What if the child is truly yours?” Mr. Collins asked his son, who frowned.“I don’t care, dad.”“You should care. If you decide to do dumb things, then you should be ready for the consequences of your actions. I don’t trust this young lady one bit either, but she seems to be sure about what she’s saying. Besides, I can see a certain resemblance between you and the child. So you’re going to take a paternity test. If the child turns out to be yours, you’re going to man up and be responsible for him.”“What if I don't want to have anything to do with her? I swear this is a trap. Nicole got pregnant on purpose.”“Just listen to yourself talking like a man child. Did I also force you to not wear a condom when the both of us were going at it like animals that night, and every other night that we fucked each other since then? Is thought you claimed you liked it raw.” Nicole asked angrily.“Jeez! Nicole, I don’t want to hear stuff like that.” Evelyn said, laug
The minute Nicole and Kevin entered into the grand living room where everyone was seated and awaiting their arrival, Mrs. Collins and Evelyn released loud, identical gasps of disbelief as they stared at the child.Mr. Collins and Harold, on the other hand, controlled their expressions more, so that Nicole couldn't guess what they thought, although she could see interest in Mr. Collins' eyes.“Good evening, everyone. Thank you for honouring my invitation.” Nicole said, bending and placing Kevin, whom she carried in her arms, on the floor. Then she gave him a tender kiss on the cheeks and forehead as though she was the most loving of mothers, before surreptitiously nudging him to remind him of what he was supposed to do.“Hello. It’s nice to meet you all.” The little boy said, bowing as Nicole had instructed him to do.“Oh, my goodness! Oh, my goodness. What a cutie! Is he the surprise you told us you have for us, Nicole? Is this what I’m suspecting it is? Please say that it is!” Mrs. Co
THE ‘WEAPON’“The time has come!” Nicole thought to herself fiercely as Evelyn drove her and Harold home from the police station after they had to spend the night there. She could be mistaken, but she thought that she might have seen some regret on Diane’s face tonight while Harold was making a spectacle of himself at her parents’ house. The last thing she needed was for Diane to decide that she wanted to forgive Harold, because she knew that Harold would go running straight back into her arms, and most likely, even cut off all contact with her, Nicole, to make Diane happy. She couldn’t afford for that to happen, so yeah, it was indeed time to apply even more pressure on Harold. After Evelyn dropped her off at her apartment, she began the process of preparing for the impromptu journey that she had to make.Three days later, she returned from her journey, and on the evening of the day she got back, she placed a call to Harold’s mother.“Good afternoon, Mrs. Collins. I’ve got a wonderful
While Diane was still trying to get Harold to leave, an angry Nicole pulled up to the driveway in one of Harold’s cars and stormed out of the car to confront him.Nicole had waited in vain for Harold to come home all evening, but when it was clear that he had no intentions of returning at the usual time, she called him, and he told her that he was swamped with work, so he was going to be late. After a while, she called again, and then kept calling at intervals until he stopped answering her calls and even turned off his phone. She would have been worried that he was cheating on her, or even worse, was probably out begging that self-righteous Diane to take him back, but the tracker that she had placed in his car showed that he was still in the office, truly. However, around midnight, he left the office, and to her horror, she saw that he was headed in the direction of Diane's parents’ house, which was where she guessed that Diane had gone to stay after she got kicked out of Harold's hou
By the time she came to the next day, Harold’s worried face and bloodshot eyes that showed his lack of sleep and guilt, were the first things that came into her line of vision.“Wh … where am I?” She croaked out in a voice that felt like it belonged to a stranger instead of her.“Oh, my goodness, babe. I’m so thankful you’re alright. You scared the hell out of me. You’re in a hospital. I found you unconscious on the floor when I got back from work. You fell down the stairs. Maybe you had a dizzy spell that caused you to lose consciousness.” Harold told her.He looked terrified, and his eyes begged her to corroborate his story, or more accurately, his lie. She didn’t say anything after that. While in the hospital, she learned that she had lost her baby, and was devastated. Harold kept pleading with her to forgive him for what he had done, but of course, he didn’t allow anyone to know that he did it, and Diane didn’t tell either.“I didn’t mean to hurt you, babe. You know I’ll never hur
It was a few weeks after her fairy-tale wedding, and Diane couldn’t be happier with her life. She had a loving husband, and she had their first child growing inside her. Everything was going well with her pregnancy, and even though she still had months to wait, she couldn’t wait to meet her unborn child. She missed her best friend, Nicole, with whom she had grown up and shared so many experiences a lot, especially because it was difficult to contact Nicole nowadays. On the rare occasions that Diane could reach her, Nicole always claimed that she was very busy with her studies, and that she also had to work, so she never had time to call or talk, but Diane assured her that she understood. However, things soon began to stop being rosy for Diane as Harold began to come back home later and later every night, claiming he was swamped with work as an excuse. At first, Diane tried to be understanding, but after a while, it became difficult to remain understanding. Before she got pregnant and g
The footsteps stopped after a while, but Diane was too petrified to relax. She tried to remember if she had locked the door, but she couldn’t remember. She had sat on the couch earlier that evening, watching her favourite series to take her mind off her sad thoughts and while away time, and somehow, so much time had passed. Before she could gather her thoughts and remember, whoever was out there pounded the door hard several times.Diane jumped about a foot high, and snatched up her phone, ready to call the police, when Harold’s drunken voice came.“Diane! Open up! I know you’re in there.” He yelled, slurring his words.Although she was mad at him for scaring her so badly, Diane nearly sagged in relief when she realized he was the one outside, and not some burglar or something.“What are you doing here, Harold? Go away before I call the cops on you. You have no right to sneak up on me like this, especially at this time of the night.” Diane said loud enough for him to hear.“Please, bab
