Harold Collins had never been so humiliated in his life. The more he thought about the solid beating that he had received at the hands of his brother-in-law, the angrier and more humiliated he became.
That asshole had literally floored him in a fight in front of his employees, making him look like a bloody weakling.
Had it been it was another person who did this to him, he would have since pressed charges and made sure that the person faced the full wrath of the law.
However, he couldn’t press charges against Lucas for some personal reasons, and the bastard knew it very well, which was why he had satisfied his anger and pummelled Harold to his satisfaction.
All the same, Harold couldn’t go home the way he was currently looking, with his split lips and both of his eyes nearly swollen shut.
If his mother saw him in his current state, then she might decide to press charges against Lucas on his behalf, and that would spell some trouble for him.
So he left work a little early and headed over to a nearby hotel that he used to frequent, to spend the remaining part of his bad day, and even also spend the night there.
He was wearing large sunglasses, so he figured that no one would recognize him, even if he happened to run into someone he knew. He didn’t know how wrong he was.
“Well, well, well. Fancy running into you here. Did you happen to change your mind about seeing me?” A somewhat familiar voice said.
He slowly turned around to see Nicole smiling mischievously at him and barely suppressed the urge to groan.
“What the fuck are you doing here, and how on earth did you recognize me?” He asked her.
“Oh, come off it. You currently look a horrid sight to behold, but of course, I’ll recognize you anywhere. I used to be madly in love with you, remember? I still am, if I'm being honest with myself, but that’s beside the point. Did you come here because you missed me? Tell me the truth, Harold.” Nicole replied.
“You’re crazy, woman. I came here for some much-needed peace and quiet. I’ll thank you very much to leave me alone and give me that privacy.”
“Oh, come on! Admit it. You came here because you knew that there’s a very high chance that I’ll be lodged here. This used to be the only hotel in which we carried out our rendezvous back then, after all. We can pick off where we left off, you know. I haven’t had sex in a hot minute, and despite the fact that you look like you’ve been in a ghastly accident, all I can think about right now is devouring you like a starved woman.”
“Oh, Nicole. You haven’t changed at all.” Harold grunted, but he couldn’t deny that his curiosity was piqued.
“Besides, you need to get treated. I have a few essential first-aid items that I think will come in handy in my room.” Nicole said, smiling charmingly at him and sashaying toward the elevator.
Harold’s eyes fixated on her swaying waist and he immediately forgot why he was at the hotel, or all the pains he was currently feeling.
In fact, he barely felt the vibration of the phone that was currently ringing in his pocket.
All that mattered to him was to follow Nicole, and have her again the way he used to do, and so that was exactly what he did.
He followed her straight to her room, and as soon as the door closed, he began to kiss her passionately.
"Damn, you're still as charming and sexy as ever. Let me do a medical check-up for you and see if you've changed over the past few years." He joked as he impatiently took off her clothes.
Nicole let him do that, smiling smugly to herself when she noticed how crazy he still was about her body.
She was just as crazy about him, and she moaned and screamed out her pleasure when he finally entered her and they had sex.
Once wasn’t enough for them, so they had sex over and over again. Harold couldn’t believe how good she felt.
He felt completely relaxed … in a way he never felt with Diane, and he imagined that it was the thrill of having sex with his wife’s best friend that made him feel that way.
All that changed the minute they finally wore themselves out and Nicole began to confess her feelings for him.
"Harold, you're exhausting me, but to be honest, I can’t complain. Do you know how much I've missed you for the past five years? Stay with me today, I don't want you to go back to Diane after fucking me. In fact, I'm ready to fuck you all night, to make up for the five years we’ve both lost." Nicole pleaded, her gaze dreamy.
Diane! That was when Harold remembered that he had put his phone on DND, so he picked it up immediately.
To his surprise, he saw several missed calls from Diane, which was quite unusual.
A missed call or two was normal, even when he was running late like today and she wanted to find out when he would get back home, but not over thirty missed calls.
Terrified that something bad had happened, he pushed Nicole off his chest, catching her by surprise.
“What’s wrong, babe? Did something bad happen?” She asked him, her face creasing in concern … that is until he answered her question, at which point, her expression changed to a mix of anger, hatred, and irritation.
“It’s my wife. I have several missed calls from her. Something must be wrong. She doesn’t ever call me so much, or rush me to come back home from work. I need to go back home immediately and make sure that she's okay.” Harold said.
Diane was pissed, but she didn’t say anything. She could never understand why Diane had to get it all … a loving, functional family and a wealthy husband, while she, Nicole had absolutely nothing.
No blood relatives and her love life was wack as well. Men used and dumped her all the time.
It had always been that way right from when they were young. Diane always got the good-looking guys, and even guys that Nicole liked always preferred Diane to her.
It was why Nicole got so much joy and fulfillment from the fact that Harold obviously didn’t love Diane.
If he loved her, he sure as hell wouldn’t be cheating on her with her best friend, not so?
The problem now was that she, Nicole, was in love with Harold, and the past five years in which she had been away had changed absolutely nothing.
If anything, now that she had had him again, the love had intensified, and she realized that she wasn’t above fighting dirty to get him to herself.
It didn’t hurt that he was rich as well, plus there was the secret that she was hiding, which was going to tie him to her forever, whether he wanted to be tied to her or not.
It wasn’t time for her to reveal that secret yet, as she was waiting to get in his mother’s good graces before she did it.
Since there was already trouble in his marriage, this would be the best time for her to swoop in and get him for herself. Her secret was going to help her greatly in the quest to get him for herself, and she felt so giddy just thinking about it.
Her train of thought was cut off abruptly when Harold suddenly got up from the bed and began to shove his legs into trousers with so much haste that one would think that the room was on fire.
“Diane is a grown woman. She can take care of herself. You and I haven’t seen each other since forever. Didn’t you miss me?” Nicole said at last, unable to hide her envy.
By this time, Harold had finished putting on his clothes, and without a backward glance, he picked up his briefcase and hurried out of the hotel room, leaving Nicole in there.
He drove home as fast as he could, only to meet Diane sitting outside the house and crying, with her belongings, or some of them, anyway, beside her.
"Oh God, baby. I'm sorry. I didn’t see all your calls. I was so swamped with work. Why are you here, what's going on?" Harold asked. When Diane saw his battered face, she put her discomfort aside.
"Oh my God, baby. Are you okay? What happened to your face? We need to get you to the hospital immediately.” She said.
This caused him to feel a tad guilty because of what he had just spent the evening doing, while she was stuck waiting outside the house for him to come back.
He could see welts from where mosquitoes had bitten her while she was waiting outside for him to come back, and he winced.
“Well, I thought you were the one who sent your brother to beat me to a pulp.” He said sardonically, smiling at her to show her that he didn’t hold it against her.
It wasn’t her fault, but rather, his, that they didn’t have a child, yet his mother always punished her for it, so he felt sorry for her.
“Lucas did this to you? Oh, my goodness. I’m so sorry about that, babe. I never imagined that he’d do anything like this. I’ll …” She began to say, but he cut her short.
“Don’t worry about it, babe. He’s your brother, and he’s only looking out for you. I’ll be fine. Let’s go home.” Harold told her, holding her hands and leading her towards their mansion.
As soon as they opened the door, however, Diane's mother-in-law’s annoyingly loud voice came out of nowhere.
“Diane, how dare you come back?!"
The voice sent chills down Diane’s spine, and she turned slowly to face her mother-in-law, who was with Harold’s sister, knowing that what was going to come wasn’t going to be pleasant in the least bit.Her heart was beating in trepidation, and she hoped that Harold was going to defend her by standing up to his mother and sister this time around.“Oh, my goodness, Harold, honey. What on earth happened to your face?” Mrs. Collins asked in shock.“Mom, it’s nothing,” Harold replied, sounding faintly embarrassed.“I know it has something to do with this godforsaken woman that you’ve refused to let go of, not so? You horrid, ugly, good-for-nothing, barren witch! What on earth did you do to my son?” Mrs. Collins spat, advancing on Diane, who shrunk away from her in terror.“Mom, please stop it. Diane had nothing to do with it.” Harold begged his mother and told her what had happened.“Oh, so now you're lying to cover up for her, is that it? You think I'm a fool, huh?” Mrs. Collins continue
Nicole was greatly pissed, and rightfully so. It had been hours since Harold got up from the hotel bed and left without a solid explanation, discarding her like she was some whore that he picked up by the roadside. What annoyed her even more was that he refused to answer her calls. She had called him several times, but he was purposely ignoring the calls because his oh-so-precious Diane was in some so-called distress.“Yeah, right! That drama queen isn’t in any distress. She just wants to control Harold and she wants him all to herself.” Diane thought to herself spitefully.Well, since Harold was refusing to answer her calls, and she needed to know what he was doing, then she didn’t have any choice other than to call Diane to find out his whereabouts.“Bestie! How are you doing? Are you settling down fine?” Diane asked when she picked up the phone, sounding way too happy for Nicole’s liking.“I’m fine and I’m indeed settling down well. You sound happy.”“Oh, yes, I am. Harold and I de
Dinner that night was great, and the sex after dinner was even better, so much so that Harold forgot his concerns regarding Nicole, at least in the meantime. After they finished having sex, Harold excused himself to answer some emails on the porch, while Diane relaxed in the room, basking in the euphoria of the lovemaking bout that she and her husband had just had.Suddenly, a call came in from Nicole on Diane’s phone, and while Diane was overjoyed to hear from her friend at first, she soon noticed that Nicole’s voice sounded a little strange.“Babe, what’s wrong? You sound a little down. Is anything the matter?” Diane asked, at which point Nicole sighed heavily into the phone.“I wanted to ask you something.”“Sure, you know you can ask me anything at all.”“Okay, are you happy with the trip? Like is Harold treating you well and all that?”“Of course, I am, and he's treating me well. Harold is a gentleman. You know that. Is that what’s troubling you? That Harold isn’t treating me wel
The rest of the trip was ruined for Nicole because of the conversation that she had overheard, but somehow, she managed to pretend like everything was alright, while she thought of what to do.The first thing she did as soon as they got back from vacation was to hurry over to Nicole’s place, because of how down she was. Nicole never failed to lift her spirit whenever she was down.“I got you your favorite perfume,” Diane told Nicole after they had exchanged pleasantries, handing the perfume over to her.“Thank you, babe. You indeed are the best. Listen, I can’t help but notice that you look subdued. I hope my friend didn’t turn out to be right, after all, because I can't think of any other reason why you’ll look so down after just coming back from a romantic getaway.” Nicole said with great interest.“I …” Diane began, but she trailed off as fresh tears gathered in her eyes. She had cried a great deal in the past several days.“Diane! Is Harold truly cheating on you?!”“I … I’m not ex
Throughout that night, Diane hardly slept a wink. She did not deserve any of this … a cheating husband and wicked in-laws. No woman deserved such a combination.By the time Harold woke up, she was wide awake and waiting for him to wake up, because she was determined to talk before he left for work.“We need to talk, Harold.” She told him. He glanced at her, probably surprised by the fact that she had called him by his name, instead of an endearment.“Good morning babe. Unfortunately, I’m very late for work already. I overslept. You should have woken me up. I need to go, but we’ll talk when I get back, okay?”“It can’t wait. It’s important,” Diane told him tightly, but he was already getting up and heading in the direction of the shower.Once he got out, he put on his clothes in a hurry, gave her a quick kiss on the cheeks, and hightailed it out of the house, promising her that they would talk as soon as he got back from work.It occurred to Diane that her marriage had probably come to
Husband and wife remained motionless, just staring at each other in shock for what felt like an eternity.Diane’s ears were ringing, and her head felt very heavy as she tried to come to terms with what she was seeing. Harold was the one who snapped out of it first.“Oh, my goodness! Diane … babe … what are you doing here?”Diane heard his panicked voice as though from afar away, but she couldn’t focus on it because she was suddenly feeling very faint.Within seconds, darkness enveloped her and she slid almost gracefully to the ground in a dead faint.By the time she came to, Harold’s crying face was the first thing that came into her line of vision.“Oh, thank goodness. Babe, you’re okay. I was so worried.” He breathed, cradling her head against his chest as his whole body shook with emotion.“W … what happened? Where am I?” Diane asked in confusion, her thoughts cloudy for the moment.“We’re at Nicole’s place. She called me and told me that you showed up at her house, saying you had
“Oh, my goodness! I’m done for! I can't believe that Diane found out about this. I never meant for her to find out. Did you see her face? She was so broken. Oh, God!” Harold breathed after Diane left, pacing Nicole’s room and grabbing his keys, but Nicole blocked his path.“It’s for the best, Harold, baby. At least now, you can be with someone who can give you children and who loves you so much as well. Remember that your family doesn’t even like her in the first place.” Nicole purred in a way that she no doubt thought was sexy, taking his face in her hands and placing a gentle kiss on his lips.“Move out of my way. I need to go plead with my wife and make sure that she’s alright.” Harold told her, pushing her none too gently out of his way.As far as he was concerned, now that Diane had found out about his affair with Nicole, there was no point coddling her any longer.“Hey! Watch it!” Nicole said angrily, but Harold was out the door already. On his way home, he kept wondering how on
Diane had never felt so down in her entire life. Sleep eluded her, and anytime she finally managed to catch some sleep, she was always plagued by nightmares in which she caught Harold and Nicole going at it like animals. It had been five days since she caught them together, and Harold hadn’t stopped blowing up her phones with calls, which she ignored, while Nicole didn’t bother to reach out to her at all. Each time Diane remembered the hatred in Nicole’s voice when she told her that she intended to fight for Harold, she shuddered in fear and revulsion, unable to believe how someone could hide who she truly was, or what was going on in her mind that well, and for so long.“How are you feeling? Are you crying again? I brought you some food. It’s your favorite, and it’s really delicious, so do eat up. I know it’s easier said than done, but I wish you would stop crying on account of those two. They don’t deserve your tears.” Lucas’s voice came, and Diane looked up to see him standing by h
Diane stared at the two old lines on the pregnancy test strip that showed that it was positive in utter disbelief. She had prepared for this possibility as much as she could in the time it took her to get back home from the hospital, but it still came as a rude shock to her. What on earth had her life come to? Here she was about to get divorced, with her soon to be ex-husband making a mockery of her all over the news for everyone to see, only to find out that she was carrying his child?Tears came unbidden to her eyes at this thought. No wonder she was always crying at the slightest inconvenience. Her hormones were working overtime.A few days later, the blood test was ready, and when she got it, there was no denying it any longer. She was indeed pregnant, and she had to make up her mind on what to do, as the pregnancy was advancing. It only took a few days for her to decide that she wanted to keep the baby. She had always wanted children, and after the struggle she went through befor
As the days passed, Diane's heart began to hurt less and less whenever she thought about Harold and Nicole being together. In fact, she tried her best to block them out of her mind. After that night when she called the cops on them, Harold reached out to her to apologize for his horrid behaviour via text, because she refused to take his calls. He had tried to reach out a few more times after that, and then he had abruptly ceased trying to communicate with her at all. She was relieved, to say the least. She was never going to go back to him, especially not with Nicole still in the picture, so there was no point in prolonging the inevitable. She had sent him fresh divorce papers, and was now waiting for him to sign them. Then one afternoon, while she was scanning through job applications so that she could apply for a job, she got another rude shock that had her questioning if she was truly getting over Harold and Nicole’s betrayal like she thought she was.She was alone at home, and the
“That’s no way to behave, Harold. What if the child is truly yours?” Mr. Collins asked his son, who frowned.“I don’t care, dad.”“You should care. If you decide to do dumb things, then you should be ready for the consequences of your actions. I don’t trust this young lady one bit either, but she seems to be sure about what she’s saying. Besides, I can see a certain resemblance between you and the child. So you’re going to take a paternity test. If the child turns out to be yours, you’re going to man up and be responsible for him.”“What if I don't want to have anything to do with her? I swear this is a trap. Nicole got pregnant on purpose.”“Just listen to yourself talking like a man child. Did I also force you to not wear a condom when the both of us were going at it like animals that night, and every other night that we fucked each other since then? Is thought you claimed you liked it raw.” Nicole asked angrily.“Jeez! Nicole, I don’t want to hear stuff like that.” Evelyn said, laug
The minute Nicole and Kevin entered into the grand living room where everyone was seated and awaiting their arrival, Mrs. Collins and Evelyn released loud, identical gasps of disbelief as they stared at the child.Mr. Collins and Harold, on the other hand, controlled their expressions more, so that Nicole couldn't guess what they thought, although she could see interest in Mr. Collins' eyes.“Good evening, everyone. Thank you for honouring my invitation.” Nicole said, bending and placing Kevin, whom she carried in her arms, on the floor. Then she gave him a tender kiss on the cheeks and forehead as though she was the most loving of mothers, before surreptitiously nudging him to remind him of what he was supposed to do.“Hello. It’s nice to meet you all.” The little boy said, bowing as Nicole had instructed him to do.“Oh, my goodness! Oh, my goodness. What a cutie! Is he the surprise you told us you have for us, Nicole? Is this what I’m suspecting it is? Please say that it is!” Mrs. Co
THE ‘WEAPON’“The time has come!” Nicole thought to herself fiercely as Evelyn drove her and Harold home from the police station after they had to spend the night there. She could be mistaken, but she thought that she might have seen some regret on Diane’s face tonight while Harold was making a spectacle of himself at her parents’ house. The last thing she needed was for Diane to decide that she wanted to forgive Harold, because she knew that Harold would go running straight back into her arms, and most likely, even cut off all contact with her, Nicole, to make Diane happy. She couldn’t afford for that to happen, so yeah, it was indeed time to apply even more pressure on Harold. After Evelyn dropped her off at her apartment, she began the process of preparing for the impromptu journey that she had to make.Three days later, she returned from her journey, and on the evening of the day she got back, she placed a call to Harold’s mother.“Good afternoon, Mrs. Collins. I’ve got a wonderful
While Diane was still trying to get Harold to leave, an angry Nicole pulled up to the driveway in one of Harold’s cars and stormed out of the car to confront him.Nicole had waited in vain for Harold to come home all evening, but when it was clear that he had no intentions of returning at the usual time, she called him, and he told her that he was swamped with work, so he was going to be late. After a while, she called again, and then kept calling at intervals until he stopped answering her calls and even turned off his phone. She would have been worried that he was cheating on her, or even worse, was probably out begging that self-righteous Diane to take him back, but the tracker that she had placed in his car showed that he was still in the office, truly. However, around midnight, he left the office, and to her horror, she saw that he was headed in the direction of Diane's parents’ house, which was where she guessed that Diane had gone to stay after she got kicked out of Harold's hou
By the time she came to the next day, Harold’s worried face and bloodshot eyes that showed his lack of sleep and guilt, were the first things that came into her line of vision.“Wh … where am I?” She croaked out in a voice that felt like it belonged to a stranger instead of her.“Oh, my goodness, babe. I’m so thankful you’re alright. You scared the hell out of me. You’re in a hospital. I found you unconscious on the floor when I got back from work. You fell down the stairs. Maybe you had a dizzy spell that caused you to lose consciousness.” Harold told her.He looked terrified, and his eyes begged her to corroborate his story, or more accurately, his lie. She didn’t say anything after that. While in the hospital, she learned that she had lost her baby, and was devastated. Harold kept pleading with her to forgive him for what he had done, but of course, he didn’t allow anyone to know that he did it, and Diane didn’t tell either.“I didn’t mean to hurt you, babe. You know I’ll never hur
It was a few weeks after her fairy-tale wedding, and Diane couldn’t be happier with her life. She had a loving husband, and she had their first child growing inside her. Everything was going well with her pregnancy, and even though she still had months to wait, she couldn’t wait to meet her unborn child. She missed her best friend, Nicole, with whom she had grown up and shared so many experiences a lot, especially because it was difficult to contact Nicole nowadays. On the rare occasions that Diane could reach her, Nicole always claimed that she was very busy with her studies, and that she also had to work, so she never had time to call or talk, but Diane assured her that she understood. However, things soon began to stop being rosy for Diane as Harold began to come back home later and later every night, claiming he was swamped with work as an excuse. At first, Diane tried to be understanding, but after a while, it became difficult to remain understanding. Before she got pregnant and g
The footsteps stopped after a while, but Diane was too petrified to relax. She tried to remember if she had locked the door, but she couldn’t remember. She had sat on the couch earlier that evening, watching her favourite series to take her mind off her sad thoughts and while away time, and somehow, so much time had passed. Before she could gather her thoughts and remember, whoever was out there pounded the door hard several times.Diane jumped about a foot high, and snatched up her phone, ready to call the police, when Harold’s drunken voice came.“Diane! Open up! I know you’re in there.” He yelled, slurring his words.Although she was mad at him for scaring her so badly, Diane nearly sagged in relief when she realized he was the one outside, and not some burglar or something.“What are you doing here, Harold? Go away before I call the cops on you. You have no right to sneak up on me like this, especially at this time of the night.” Diane said loud enough for him to hear.“Please, bab
