FIVE YEARS LATER
Diane was tired and famished as hell, but thankfully, she had finally finished the chores that she had been doing all day.
She dropped the small cloth with which she was using to wipe surfaces clean and heaved a huge sigh.
“Of course, you're tired, you lazy, good-for-nothing slob. I don’t know what the hell my son saw in you all those years ago, or why he keeps wasting his youthful years with a haggard, useless woman who can’t give him even one child!” Diane’s mother-in-law’s grating voice came out of nowhere.
Diane sat up immediately, and the relief that she was feeling at being done with her numerous tasks, vanished immediately.
However, she didn’t say a word, but instead, kept her expression meek and humble, because she knew what was coming.
Her mother-in-law, Mrs. Collins, did not disappoint, but instead, went around, running her fingers on the surfaces that Diane had just cleaned, her lips curling with displeasure.
Then she opened her mouth and vile words began to pour out of it.
“Is this your idea of what a good clean-up entails? You really are useless in every ramification, aren’t you? Why did you have to tie my son down with you, when you know that your womb is as barren as a desert? What did my poor Harold do to deserve to be saddled with you? Why have you sunk your claws so deeply into his flesh and refused to let go, no matter how many times I ask you to free him? I believe I'm talking to a human being and not a log of wood. Don’t you dare ignore me! Answer the questions I ask you!”
“I’m sorry, Mrs. Collins, but I love him and he loves me as well. We’re trying hard for a baby. We’ve always been trying. Harold hasn’t asked me to leave him, or given me any impression that he doesn’t want me any longer.” Diane said in a broken voice, the familiar ache stirring up within her chest and tears of sorrow welling up in her eyes.
It was always the same story, and no matter how much she tried to please, or avoid her mother-in-law, she could never escape her sharp and barbed tongue, especially now that the woman took it upon herself to come to their house at will.
She wondered what Mrs. Collins would say if she knew that it was the fault of her precious son that she didn’t have the grandchild that she so desired.
“You should be able to read the room, and not wait for him to spell out the fact that he wants you gone. If you’re gone from his life, then he will find someone who can give him children. I want you gone out of my son’s life. That’s all I want from you. So are you going to grant my wish without fuss, or do I have to make you?” Mrs. Collins asked, advancing menacingly on Diane.
Diane shrunk away from her in terror. All she wanted was to be left alone, but it seemed that that was too much to ask.
“I told you before to always reply to me when I’m talking to you, or are you now deaf?”
“I love Harold …” Diane said again.
Mrs. Collins was now close to where Diane was sitting on one of the chairs, and she practically got in her face to spit some more vile words at her, but at that moment, Harold entered the living room.
“What’s going on here? How are my two favorite women on earth doing this wonderful evening?” He asked, coming closer to both women and placing his briefcase on the table.
Mrs. Collins immediately straightened and gave her son a big smile, acting like all was fine and she hadn’t literally been threatening Diane a few moments before.
“Welcome home, my darling son. How was your day today?” She asked, her voice sweet as she went towards him for a big, long hug, and peppered his face with kisses.
He hugged her back and they conversed in light, quiet tones, which were obviously not meant for Diane’s ears.
For Diane’s part, she wiped her tears away and tried to put a bright smile on her face for her husband’s benefit.
“Welcome home, babe. How was your day?” She asked him, coming over to meet him and Mrs. Collins, and trying to ignore the disgusted look that Mrs. Collins threw her way.
“It was fine, babe. Thank you very much, and how was your day?” He asked her, taking his hand off his mother’s shoulders and taking Diane’s hand in his.
Diane tried not to dwell on how Mrs. Collins's face darkened at that move. The woman tried to get Harold’s attention again, but he had his attention on Diane this time around, and he led her away to their room.
“I’m so sorry about my mom. I heard some of what she was saying to you. Thank you for not telling her about the miscarriage babe.” Harold told her when they got into the room, taking her in his arms and giving her a light kiss on the lips.
Diane leaned against him and sighed, wishing that things were different and they had their own little bundle of joy already.
“She’s your mom, babe. I know you love her, but you have to stand up to her and tell her to stop hounding me all the time over something I have no control over. You know that had it been in my power, this house would have been filled with the sounds of laughing children already.”
“I know, I know. I’ll talk to her. Listen, I have a wonderful surprise for you.” Harold told her, purposely changing the topic.
“Really? What is it?”
“I booked a vacation for us. We’re going to the Bahamas. I know you’ve always wanted to go there, so I decided to make it a reality for you. How do you like that?”
“Are you kidding? I love it! Oh, thank you so much, honey. Wait! Your mom isn’t coming as well, is she?” Diane asked, her excitement fading a little as she dreaded the answer.
The last thing she needed was Mrs. Collins breathing down her neck while she was supposed to be on vacation.
Mrs. Collins had made sure to always ruin any vacation that the couple ever went on with her presence because she always insisted on coming along with them, and then causing trouble for Diane.
It didn’t help that Harold was too scared of his mother to defend his wife, and so he almost always pretended not to notice whenever Mrs. Collins began her annoying shenanigans.
“No, I didn’t tell her about the vacation this time around. It’s going to be just the two of us. I hope we enjoy the vacation. If we're lucky enough, maybe we'll have a baby so that mom doesn't keep bothering you. We’re leaving tomorrow morning.” Harold told her.
"Thank you, Harold. Thank you for always supporting me.” Diane said, her voice choked with emotion.
They kissed each other passionately, and just when things were starting to get really hot and heavy between them, Harold's phone suddenly rang. He picked it up and frowned when he saw the caller ID.
"Honey, you can rest first. I still have some work to do." He told her and then walked into the study to answer the phone.
It was Nicole, Diane’s best friend, who was calling and when he answered the call, he was flabbergasted at the news she delivered to him.
“I arrived in the city this night. You and I need to see tomorrow. It’s really urgent.” She said without preamble.
“What on earth are you talking about? What do you mean by you arrived in the city that night? How come I didn’t know that you were coming back?”
“I decided that I wanted to give you a wonderful surprise. Why? Haven’t you missed me all this while? I thought that you’d be happy to hear from me.” Nicole said sultrily.
“Well, I can't meet with you, and I don’t even want to. I’m going on vacation with my wife tomorrow morning.”
“Hmmm … I see how it is. Love in paradise, huh? So you’re taking that barren woman on a vacation? You’re wasting your money on someone who adds no value to your life? How stupid!”
“Watch your tongue, and once again, I'm not going to see or meet with you. Goodnight.” Harold told her and hung up, after which he turned off his phone.
The next morning however, as some of their domestic staff loaded him and Diane’s luggage into the car, an unfamiliar car drove into the compound, and in the next second, Nicole got out of the car, beaming widely.
“Oh, my goodness! I cannot believe my eyes! I must be seeing things.” Diane exclaimed in blatant joy and surprise, rushing over to hug Nicole. The two women hugged for what felt like an eternity, and as they hugged, Nicole and Harold’s eyes met.She winked at him sultrily, her eyes heavy with promises of what was to come, but he averted his gaze from hers nervously, wishing that she hadn’t come. The whole ruckus alerted Mrs. Collins, and Harold’s sister, Evelyn, who came outside to see what the ruckus was all about.“Alright, ladies. I guess this means that the vacation has to be postponed. I have to get to work urgently because something just came up, anyway, so I’ll see all of you later. Have fun.” Harold said.He hopped into the idling car to make a hasty getaway from the awkward situation he knew was about to unfold with the presence of his mother and sister, leaving Diane to deal with their luggage.Diane didn’t mind that the vacation was cancelled though, because she was overjoy
After the two women had breakfast, Nicole all but dragged Diane all over town to get gifts for her parents. Then she insisted they visit them that same day because she had missed them so much. That was a lie, but Diane didn’t need to know that.“You should have taken today and even tomorrow to rest before coming to see them. You look so tired.” Diane told Nicole as they got out of the vehicle.“Oh, nonsense! Your parents are literally my parents as well. They raised me after my parents’ deaths, after all. I can spend the night here if I'm too tired to go back to my hotel after I visit them.” Was the reply.“Alright then,” Diane said. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis, were overjoyed to see both women and expressed their surprise at Nicole’s sudden appearance in the city. Not long after both women arrived, Diane’s older brother, Lucas, with whom both of them had grown up, came over to the house to see both of them. Apparently, his mother had sent word to him that they were around. He wa
Harold Collins had never been so humiliated in his life. The more he thought about the solid beating that he had received at the hands of his brother-in-law, the angrier and more humiliated he became. That asshole had literally floored him in a fight in front of his employees, making him look like a bloody weakling.Had it been it was another person who did this to him, he would have since pressed charges and made sure that the person faced the full wrath of the law. However, he couldn’t press charges against Lucas for some personal reasons, and the bastard knew it very well, which was why he had satisfied his anger and pummelled Harold to his satisfaction. All the same, Harold couldn’t go home the way he was currently looking, with his split lips and both of his eyes nearly swollen shut. If his mother saw him in his current state, then she might decide to press charges against Lucas on his behalf, and that would spell some trouble for him.So he left work a little early and headed o
The voice sent chills down Diane’s spine, and she turned slowly to face her mother-in-law, who was with Harold’s sister, knowing that what was going to come wasn’t going to be pleasant in the least bit.Her heart was beating in trepidation, and she hoped that Harold was going to defend her by standing up to his mother and sister this time around.“Oh, my goodness, Harold, honey. What on earth happened to your face?” Mrs. Collins asked in shock.“Mom, it’s nothing,” Harold replied, sounding faintly embarrassed.“I know it has something to do with this godforsaken woman that you’ve refused to let go of, not so? You horrid, ugly, good-for-nothing, barren witch! What on earth did you do to my son?” Mrs. Collins spat, advancing on Diane, who shrunk away from her in terror.“Mom, please stop it. Diane had nothing to do with it.” Harold begged his mother and told her what had happened.“Oh, so now you're lying to cover up for her, is that it? You think I'm a fool, huh?” Mrs. Collins continue
Nicole was greatly pissed, and rightfully so. It had been hours since Harold got up from the hotel bed and left without a solid explanation, discarding her like she was some whore that he picked up by the roadside. What annoyed her even more was that he refused to answer her calls. She had called him several times, but he was purposely ignoring the calls because his oh-so-precious Diane was in some so-called distress.“Yeah, right! That drama queen isn’t in any distress. She just wants to control Harold and she wants him all to herself.” Diane thought to herself spitefully.Well, since Harold was refusing to answer her calls, and she needed to know what he was doing, then she didn’t have any choice other than to call Diane to find out his whereabouts.“Bestie! How are you doing? Are you settling down fine?” Diane asked when she picked up the phone, sounding way too happy for Nicole’s liking.“I’m fine and I’m indeed settling down well. You sound happy.”“Oh, yes, I am. Harold and I de
Dinner that night was great, and the sex after dinner was even better, so much so that Harold forgot his concerns regarding Nicole, at least in the meantime. After they finished having sex, Harold excused himself to answer some emails on the porch, while Diane relaxed in the room, basking in the euphoria of the lovemaking bout that she and her husband had just had.Suddenly, a call came in from Nicole on Diane’s phone, and while Diane was overjoyed to hear from her friend at first, she soon noticed that Nicole’s voice sounded a little strange.“Babe, what’s wrong? You sound a little down. Is anything the matter?” Diane asked, at which point Nicole sighed heavily into the phone.“I wanted to ask you something.”“Sure, you know you can ask me anything at all.”“Okay, are you happy with the trip? Like is Harold treating you well and all that?”“Of course, I am, and he's treating me well. Harold is a gentleman. You know that. Is that what’s troubling you? That Harold isn’t treating me wel
The rest of the trip was ruined for Nicole because of the conversation that she had overheard, but somehow, she managed to pretend like everything was alright, while she thought of what to do.The first thing she did as soon as they got back from vacation was to hurry over to Nicole’s place, because of how down she was. Nicole never failed to lift her spirit whenever she was down.“I got you your favorite perfume,” Diane told Nicole after they had exchanged pleasantries, handing the perfume over to her.“Thank you, babe. You indeed are the best. Listen, I can’t help but notice that you look subdued. I hope my friend didn’t turn out to be right, after all, because I can't think of any other reason why you’ll look so down after just coming back from a romantic getaway.” Nicole said with great interest.“I …” Diane began, but she trailed off as fresh tears gathered in her eyes. She had cried a great deal in the past several days.“Diane! Is Harold truly cheating on you?!”“I … I’m not ex
Throughout that night, Diane hardly slept a wink. She did not deserve any of this … a cheating husband and wicked in-laws. No woman deserved such a combination.By the time Harold woke up, she was wide awake and waiting for him to wake up, because she was determined to talk before he left for work.“We need to talk, Harold.” She told him. He glanced at her, probably surprised by the fact that she had called him by his name, instead of an endearment.“Good morning babe. Unfortunately, I’m very late for work already. I overslept. You should have woken me up. I need to go, but we’ll talk when I get back, okay?”“It can’t wait. It’s important,” Diane told him tightly, but he was already getting up and heading in the direction of the shower.Once he got out, he put on his clothes in a hurry, gave her a quick kiss on the cheeks, and hightailed it out of the house, promising her that they would talk as soon as he got back from work.It occurred to Diane that her marriage had probably come to
“Oh, my goodness! I’m done for! I can't believe that Diane found out about this. I never meant for her to find out. Did you see her face? She was so broken. Oh, God!” Harold breathed after Diane left, pacing Nicole’s room and grabbing his keys, but Nicole blocked his path.“It’s for the best, Harold, baby. At least now, you can be with someone who can give you children and who loves you so much as well. Remember that your family doesn’t even like her in the first place.” Nicole purred in a way that she no doubt thought was sexy, taking his face in her hands and placing a gentle kiss on his lips.“Move out of my way. I need to go plead with my wife and make sure that she’s alright.” Harold told her, pushing her none too gently out of his way.As far as he was concerned, now that Diane had found out about his affair with Nicole, there was no point coddling her any longer.“Hey! Watch it!” Nicole said angrily, but Harold was out the door already. On his way home, he kept wondering how on
Husband and wife remained motionless, just staring at each other in shock for what felt like an eternity.Diane’s ears were ringing, and her head felt very heavy as she tried to come to terms with what she was seeing. Harold was the one who snapped out of it first.“Oh, my goodness! Diane … babe … what are you doing here?”Diane heard his panicked voice as though from afar away, but she couldn’t focus on it because she was suddenly feeling very faint.Within seconds, darkness enveloped her and she slid almost gracefully to the ground in a dead faint.By the time she came to, Harold’s crying face was the first thing that came into her line of vision.“Oh, thank goodness. Babe, you’re okay. I was so worried.” He breathed, cradling her head against his chest as his whole body shook with emotion.“W … what happened? Where am I?” Diane asked in confusion, her thoughts cloudy for the moment.“We’re at Nicole’s place. She called me and told me that you showed up at her house, saying you had
