Chapter 4

Sophia's ashes spilled onto the floor the next instant. I was shaking all over in rage.

I threw my arm back and slapped Caleb hard across the face.

"Caleb, you bastard! How could you break the urn containing your mom's ashes? Are you not afraid of divine punishment?"

Caleb was in a daze after receiving that slap. He snapped out of it a few seconds later and yelled at me furiously, "Esther Lloyd, how dare you hit me? You lunatic!"

I ignored him. Crouching down, I fumbled as I tried to pick up Sophia's ashes with my hands.

"Mom, I'm sorry. I'm so useless. I didn't do a good job at protecting you."

Caleb stared at me as though he was looking at some monster. He scoffed. "That's just flour, isn't it? Your acting skills are quite convincing."

I lifted my head and glared at Caleb with red, teary eyes. "Caleb, you spilled Mom's ashes! Can you really call yourself a human?"
