Audrey POV:
“Audrey Hill.” The guard looked at me with a blank expression for some seconds, causing me to inwardly squirm. “Proof of identity?” I reached into my bag for my ID, feeling sad. Diane hadn't come to pick me at the gate. As usual, she'd left me to fend for myself. And as usual, I was accepting what seemed like the inevitable. I'd never been her priority anyway. It'd always been Tanya, seeing as I wasn't her blood. Sometimes I'd doubted I was my father's blood, too. But at least he tried his best. “Identified. Welcome, Audrey Hill, daughter of previous Gamma of Rhinestone Pack, Bernard Gatrix-Hill.” Gatrix. My grandfather's name. It'd been so long since I heard anyone say it in relation to my family. Before my dad's death, Gatrix-Hill had been my last name, too. But Diane refused to bear it, saying it was somewhat ‘tacky’. At the time, I kind of agreed with her, and had been terribly grateful when she convinced him to change it for me too. But hearing it from the guard for the first time in over five years, I couldn't help but feel emotional. I really missed being among my people. As the reality hit me, I nodded at the guard as the gates swung open and took a deep breath before taking my first step in. It was like stepping into heaven. I'd once heard someone describe stepping foot into one's home as being surrounded by hundreds of fluffy teddies with big smiles on their faces. It was true; at least, it felt true, because as soon as I walked through those gates, my heart began to beat faster, and my wolf that had been quiet for a little over a year stirred. I was alive. Inspite of myself, I grinned at the electrifying energy coursing through me, unlike any feeling I'd ever had before. It was like I was on fire, but I wasn't burnt. Instead I was harnessing the flames and riding on them like they were made for me. Like I was- “Audrey?” And just like that, the fire went out. Tanya stood behind me, looking every inch like the goddess Diane had often described when we were little. She wore a cute sundress with ice cream patterns on it and had her hair in a bun with tendrils escaping down the sides of her face. Her eyes were as bright yet calculating, and I couldn't resist the memories that kept rushing into my mind by the mere sight of them. As the sun shone on her figure, I couldn’t help but think that she was so…beautiful. Anyone passing by would probably think I was her maid. “Tanya,” I managed to choke out, not bothering with a smile. “You've arrived,” she said, her face showing relief. “I'm so glad. When Mother told me you mentioned arriving in two days, I almost didn't believe it. But here you are, safe and sound.” She still had the silky voice that had come to comfort me whenever Diane got mad and overdid my punishment. The same voice that I’d heard during multiple dinners flattering my father. She'd grown, gotten even more beautiful, and she was even engaged now. But she still had the same voice. I wanted to crawl into a hole in the ground. “Yes. Here I am, safe and sound.” My voice sounded so scratchy and lifeless. I cringed. Suddenly, she beamed and looped an arm around me, startling me. “Well, good for you! I’m just returning from the Alpha's quarters and going back home. Come on, let's go together!” “Sure,” I replied. “I, um, would love that. It’s just- I just…I have luggage.” She looked at me for a moment, looking bewildered. Then she smiled, and I thought my eyes would begin to hurt from the brightness of that smile. “Oh! You brought wedding gifts?” Wedding gifts. Shit. It suddenly occurred to me that I didn't tell Diane about my housing situation. Tanya probably thought that I was visiting and would be around for a few weeks before returning to the human civilization. Any luggage I'd have here would only include my clothes and…wedding gifts. But I hadn't even known about her wedding until two days ago! Immediately I faked a smile that was so wide, my face hurt. “Right. That. Of course. There are…gift items.” Like gift cards and vouchers that could most definitely not be used at the pack house. “Aw! You really didn't have to!” “...um.” I really didn't have to lie. I knew that as well. So why did I just- I flinched when she placed her palm over mine. “Well, Audrey, I look forward to seeing what you brought for me. In the meantime, I'll get someone to take the luggage for us.” As soon as she finished speaking, her eyes flashed gold, and I knew she was speaking to someone via the mind link. I hadn't used that in so long. Well, to be honest, I didn't exactly have a cause to use it that much. After I grew up, I mostly interacted with one word replies, and only ever spoke to my childhood friend, Jacob. Could I still use it? I tried to ask Tanya, but she was already talking again and dragging me across the street. Just as she used to when we were kids. Some things never changed. “...and he laughed, Audrey. Can you imagine?” I blinked when I heard my name, confused for a moment before realizing she'd been talking to me all this while. I'd been so lost in the beauty of the pack house I'd forgotten she was speaking to me. “Who are we talking about?” “The Alpha!” She looked offended that I hadn't been following. “People say he has this dark expression on his face every time, but it always softens when he sees kids. Also, he has the most beautiful laugh!” “Um…good for you?” She gave me a disapproving side glance, then shook her head. “You weren't listening.” “I wasn't. I'm sorry.” “It's fine.” Her eyes looked disappointed. “He listens to me. That's all that matters.” I sighed inwardly. “Right. I…I'm sorry. I just…I'm just very tired right now. I promise we can talk all about him later. Also, Diane told me you want us to go shopping; we could do that too, whenever you want.” She gave me a surprised look. “Are you sure? You've never been one for the outdoors.” Ah. So she remembered. “Well…it's your big day. I can make the sacrifice.” She beamed when she heard that. “That's wonderful! Come on, let's get you home. You actually look tired.” We walked down together, and I forced a smile on my face as she chatted non-stop about her fiancé and all the things he'd done for her. They seemed like they were in love. So that meant… “Tanya, how does the mate bond feel like?” She paused, her expression changing faster than I could imagine. “What?” “You…and the Alpha. You two are mates, right?” Contrary to the expression I thought she would get on her face, she frowned. “Does it matter?” I blinked. Hadn't Diane said they were fated by goddess Luna? Approved by the elders? A match? Or had I heard her wrong? “I…” “Whether we’re mates or not, it doesn't matter. We love each other, Audrey. That's what matters,” she interjected, a sharp look in her eyes. In other words, it was none of my business. I understood the warning. I closed my eyes and nodded. But I couldn't understand how someone would accept to be tied in a relationship when they most likely had a mate elsewhere. A relationship as serious as marriage, for that matter! I knew that Diane and Tanya disregarded tradition a lot, which was why many elders didn't like them. But I didn't expect the Alpha, who was supposed to uphold tradition, to accept such a thing.Roman POV: “What are you doing?” I looked up from the file I was poring over, surprised that I’d been so engrossed I hadn't heard Julian come in. After the argument we had the other day, it'd taken a while, but we'd finally made up. “Glossing through some files.” He folded his arms and inclined his head to the side. “It looks like you're doing a lot more than glossing to me. You didn’t even hear me walk in.” I snorted and closed the document. “Well, I was glossing intently through those files.” “Mm-hmm. Those files wouldn’t happen to be related to the rogue case, would they?” “...well.” He plopped down on a nearby chair. “That's supposed to be my job, but okay.” “I had the time,” I responded, but even I knew that was a lie. I just needed to do something. “Right. What do you have?” “Just like Pascal said during the last meeting, these attacks are well thought out. As though the rogues know exactly when they're supposed to attack, and how they're to move when they do.” “
I raced through the woods, my senses on high alert though my mind was heady with the scent of musk. There was no better feeling than that of trampling the ground with my paws, and my wolf let out a howl of the ecstasy that we both shared. A while later, I padded down a small clearing, taking note of the sounds around me, making sure there was no threat. And there wasn't. Till everywhere became silent. Rogues. I could smell them. Heart pounding, I trained my ears to listen to their heartbeats and movements, and when the first one appeared, I was ready. A loud cry of pain pierced through the air as I tore it apart, ensuring it was dead before facing the next one charging towards me. I'd just thrown the last one down when a sharp pain struck my chest, and I collapsed, wheezing multiple times before letting darkness embrace me.♠︎♠︎♠︎♠︎♠︎Audrey POV: I'd been wandering through the woods, savoring the feeling I was never able to enjoy when I heard groaning. Roman POV:It felt like a thousand needles were stuck to my chest as I gained consciousness, and everywhere was dark. I forced myself to regulate my breath till the memories came flooding back to me and opened my eyes, only to shut them back because they were momentarily blinded. “What the hell-” A gasp from my left caused me to peel them open again, and my gaze met that of a stupefied nurse, who let out another sound and fled the room.Seconds later, a few people rushed into the room, and I raised a brow at their panicked faces. “What's going on here?”“You’re okay,” a voice I recognized as Julian's said. His usually nonchalant expression was replaced by one of relief, and I felt slightly uncomfortable. “Of course I am,” I huffed, attempting to sit up. “What am I doing here-shit?"” The nurses immediately scrambled to help me as I fell back, pain shooting across my shoulder. “Do you remember what you're doing here now?” Julian said, his face hovering over mine as the nurses fussed
Though I vaguely recalled her saying that she had to get the bullet out. I didn’t think Luna would have to go through that stress if she'd been the one.Which left the other option her scent had caused me to assume, as stupid as it sounded. She was one of the servants in the temple constructed for the goddess.I mean, that would make a lot of sense. Why she had such an addictive scent, why she was brazen enough to touch my wolf and even…even kiss him.I groaned and turned my face from the ceiling, choosing to focus more on the irritating infirmary odor. I'd go looking for her as soon as I was out. I stayed like that for what felt like and might have actually been hours, occasionally tossing to the other side in a bid to stretch. But the doctor came around once again and told me not to, as the stitches could pull out. I entered a bad mood after hearing that, and I found it hard to conceal my frown as the nurses arrived later to re-dress my wound. They hadn't finished when the door sl
As much as I didn't like my current life, I liked my head on my neck. Thank you very much. I was still contemplating my very existence when the door opened, revealing Diane. She raised a brow at my terribly scattered room, then gave me a disapproving look. “I believe I taught you better than this, Audrey.” I hated that look. “I'm sorry. I'd tidy up soon.” The expression on her face said she preferred immediately rather than soon, but I was a full adult now. She couldn't order me around like she used to. Finally, after the battle of emotions that crossed her face, she decided on looking nonchalant. “Jacob is downstairs.” My eyes widened. “Jake?”“Yes. He's been here for a while, actually, but has been talking with Tanya about the wedding. You know, as the Gamma, he's in charge of the security team for the ceremony.”“...he’s the Gamma?!” She gave up on nonchalance and shot me an irritated look. “Has been for the past few months. You'd have known if you weren't such a coward.” I
The man I'd rescued was staring straight at me. The level of my horror went up when Jake followed my gaze and spoke. “Oh, that's the Alpha.” ♠︎♠︎♠︎♠︎Roman POV:“You have to admit, he does a good job,” I chuckled when Julian complained about Jacob, the incubent gamma of the pack, for the umpteenth time. I'd been strolling around the compound with him, studying the security arrangements to search for possible loopholes, and had decided to call on Tanya at her home, so we were on the way to the Hill house. My best friend scoffed and pulled the cap on his head even lower, completely obstructing the light falling on his face. “When I held the position of both Gamma and Beta for just three weeks, I did far better work.” “You’d been Beta for over two years. He's just stepping in. Cut him some slack.” Julian mumbled something along the lines of ‘Whatever’, and I was about to laugh again when a fruity scent filled my nostrils, causing me to pause my movements. He noticed and stopped,
A low growl came from Julian, and the man laughed. “Foolish Beta, you're not my problem. You're just a dog.” Contrary to how others would have acted, Julian scoffed. “I'm almost insulted. Surely you have something better than saying that a werewolf is a dog.” The man snarled at Julian's quick retort and dropped the knife, choosing to wrap his hand around the teenage girl's neck and her to scream in pain. Julian frowned, and our opponent smiled in response. “Here's what we're going to do, hm? You're going to cut off the head of your Alpha and throw it over to me here. I confirm that he's dead. The girl is free. I confirm that he's not dead, I take her back home and give her some ladylike treatment.” A lustful look showed in his eyes as he looked her over.I was at my breaking point. “So…you’re performing all these shenanigans because you want me dead, but you're too cowardly to kill me yourself?” “I don’t want to hear your voice anymore. Julian! Kill your fucking Alpha,” he spat.
“I have to unpack! Bye!” I cried, running upstairs to avoid whatever she was going to say. She had nothing against Jacob, but there was a possibility of her asking questions I didn't want to answer. A big smile was on my face when I looked into the huge mirror that had been in my room since I was nine. Just as I'd left it, photos of my high school moments were pasted all around the border, and there were sticky notes that my younger self had written, detailing my growth over the years. My hand itched to add another note, but I restrained myself. I'd gone through a lot of shit in those years, which was why I'd distracted myself with the cute notes. However, I was older now - little rubbish like that couldn't solve real-world problems. The smile I'd had before due to Jacob's actions dimmed, and I looked away from the mirror.“Life is just amazing,” I sarcastically said to myself. Then I picked up my bag to actually unpack, not because I'd told Diane that, but because I was going to d
Roman POV:It was in the middle of the night. Julian and I had found it difficult to sleep, and we'd stayed awake for a long time discussing the next course of action as regards the revelation about Gertrude and her Crimson Wolves lover. An hour before we heard the scratching sounds, we'd finally drawn a plan up. Thus we’d retired to bed, but my eyes opened when I heard the sounds. A second later, Julian had sat up. “Do you hear that?” he mouthed to me, and I nodded, my eyes trained on the door. Someone was trying to get in, but not by kicking the door open. The person wanted to come in quietly. I heard whispers and narrowed my eyes. Not a person. Persons. That meant a group of people wanted to sneak into the room. In such a situation, especially in a place like Roguemania, it meant they didn't have good intent. They wanted to cause us harm. Most likely kill us. Julian looked at me with a questioning glance, asking if he should go ahead and kill them immediately. But I shook my h
Audrey POV:I shivered from the coolness of the place I’d been caged in, completely unaware about the goings on of the outside world. Jacob and Derek hadn't replied my other fear-filled questions when I'd awoken, and at a point Jacob had snapped at me to shut up, with certain backstories on when his hatred for me began. I almost could not believe it. Jacob, my close friend, had kidnapped and regarded me as some annoying fly he'd had to put up with. I was finding it hard to accept that he and Tanya had planned the entire ruse. How could he have done that to me? He'd been brazen enough to destroy my trust in him without a trace of remorse. We'd grown up together, for crying out loud. He was my best friend! He'd changed so much, that I knew when I returned. He'd become the Gamma, and though he tried to be normal with me, I could feel it. He was different. Perhaps I'd changed too, but that hadn't stopped me from being his genuine friend. I loved him just as I'd loved him before I fled
Roman POV:The last time I’d seen Gertrude was about two weeks ago, when she'd been brought to my office from her place of temporary confinement so we could discuss the terms of co-parenting, after which the guards had returned her to the quarters. And now she'd appeared in a place I'd never have dreamed of seeing her in. Julian had a frown on his face. “What's she doing here?” I had the very same question. But we knew we would not get our answer by standing in the street, so we followed her quietly, ensuring she would not be able to see us. Due to the training we'd received as spies, this was terribly easy, also considering the fact that she was an amateur at sneaking about. Finally she turned into the back of a rundown bar, and I frowned when I sighted another figure behind the said bar. Another look confirmed that it was a male, and when she threw her arms around him, my eyes narrowed. Well, she'd drugged me to sleep with me and get pregnant. Had I really expected that I'd be
Audrey POV:Tanya couldn't be planning to kill herself. But as I rushed down the path leading to my former residence, I couldn't help but think otherwise. The tone she'd used while talking to me had caused me to have an adrenaline rush, and though the guard at the door had stopped me initially, I'd snuck out through the backdoor. For what it was worth, I genuinely hoped she hadn't died. Sure, we'd had our issues, but I never wanted her to die. I arrived at the front door and immediately banged on it, not caring that it was late at night. It didn't take long before my stepsister opened it, mascara streaks running down her face. She seemed surprised to see me but also relieved. “Audrey,” she breathed. “You came.” Then she opened the door wider. “Please, come in.”I walked in, surprised at how foreign the house I'd lived in for so long seemed to me now. “H-how are you, Tanya? And what was all that talk about wanting peace?” She looked at me with fresh tears in her eyes. “I'm so sorry
Marvin POV:I whistled a merry tune as I strolled to the Hill residence. Everything was going according to plan. Diane Hill had gone on another travel, Margrave had successfully gotten Roman and Julian to visit him, Audrey was alone, and Jacob was alone. All I had to do was set the stage. “Marvin?” Tanya recoiled when she saw me at the door, then bowed her head as I entered. I grinned at her show of humility, knowing that fear was what drove her actions. Since I'd made it clear just how far I could go, she was ready to cooperate. Which was good, considering what I was about to make her do. But first… “Hello, darling mate,” I purred, shutting the door behind me and locking it, before pulling her to me. She yelped and tried to move away, but went mute when I pinched her waist. After finding my next partner, I'd tossed and turned all night, my wolf itching for her to be by my side. Now that she was before me, I had a somewhat overwhelming urge to devour her. But I didn't plan to do
Roman POV:Surely, he wasn't serious. But as I looked at his clear gaze inspite of the fact that someone was sucking his cock, I realized he meant what he'd said. He wanted me to give Audrey up like some sort of peace offering in exchange for his help. “Well?” he prompted, after a while of grunting and forcing the woman's head up and down, his eyes gleaming. “What do you say?”“You want me to give my mate up?” I heard a voice that sounded like mine say. He nodded, a stupid smirk on his face. “She's your most precious possession, isn't she?”“She isn't a possession.” He raised a brow, then chuckled. “That's a foolish way of thinking, young man. Women are possessions, whether you like it or not.”“That's a backward way of thinking,” I couldn't stop myself from saying, and he frowned. “Now I understand why your father left the pack for you completely. He must be embarrassed to hear his child speaking like this.” He grunted then, and the woman lifted her head. He patted her fondly, t
Over my dead body. But I couldn't say that to him. “Maybe another time,” I said instead, forcing a small smile on my face. “Today will just be business only.” He raised a brow at my statement. “Business only? You? I would never have imagined a Blackburn not wanting to mix business with pleasure. Are you sure your father is proud of you, boy?” Bile rose in my throat at the mention of my father. “That doesn't matter, Leonard.”“Oh, but it does.” He turned to the woman. “Hey! Spread your cunt!” She quivered but did as he asked, and he growled in satisfaction, before telling a surprised Julian and I to give him a second so he could finish. I tried to focus on somewhere else as he increased his tempo, wanting nothing more than to flee the room or bleach my mind so the image of his naked body joined to another woman's naked body would be erased. “I want to kill him,” Julian growled in my mind. “It's just for a while,” I replied, though I wanted to do the very same. “Let's be patient.”
“You never did,” I shot back, skidding the car to a halt when I finally saw the landmark. Julian almost flew out of his seat, but he said nothing, choosing to glare at me instead before unbuckling his seatbelt and opening the car door. We covered the car with tarp and the rest of the journey on foot, not wanting to bring attention to ourselves from the rogues. Margrave might be a rogue chief, but he didn't exactly dictate what all rogues could or couldn't do. Tracy's was located in the heart of an unnamed place, which Julian had nicknamed Roguemania, as it was the site of everything rogues stood for after leaving a pack: disloyalty, crime, and absolute madness. We'd been sent to this place by my father before and had barely been able to complete our mission. That was when we'd first met Margrave, and when he'd made it clear that he considered me his enemy. For that reason, I'd been the object of his hatred for years, mostly with him toying with me for his selfish benefits. That wa
Ugh. This was going to be tasking. The foolish woman was causing me to work overtime. I stood and got my laptop, then scrolled through the list of my possible partners in the pack, seeking for someone I could easily control. The elders were too full of themselves, so no. Diane Hill would have been perfect, but she was roped in with too many criminals, I couldn't risk it. The servants in Roman's quarters would have been perfect, but they were majorly loyal to him. I needed someone who held a grudge. Someone who, with a simple nudge in the right direction, would not hesitate to destroy him. I kept scrolling, getting more irritated with every second, till my eyes settled upon the perfect person, and a smile crept onto my face. Of course. Why didn't I think of him before? Jacob Clyde. The current Gamma and Audrey's oldest friend in the pack. Probably her only friend, now that I thought about the days we'd been dating. They'd been inseparable before she met me, and he'd constantly mad
