Roman POV:
“What are you doing?” I looked up from the file I was poring over, surprised that I’d been so engrossed I hadn't heard Julian come in. After the argument we had the other day, it'd taken a while, but we'd finally made up. “Glossing through some files.” He folded his arms and inclined his head to the side. “It looks like you're doing a lot more than glossing to me. You didn’t even hear me walk in.” I snorted and closed the document. “Well, I was glossing intently through those files.” “Mm-hmm. Those files wouldn’t happen to be related to the rogue case, would they?” “...well.” He plopped down on a nearby chair. “That's supposed to be my job, but okay.” “I had the time,” I responded, but even I knew that was a lie. I just needed to do something. “Right. What do you have?” “Just like Pascal said during the last meeting, these attacks are well thought out. As though the rogues know exactly when they're supposed to attack, and how they're to move when they do.” “True.” I nodded at his reply, satisfied that he understood. “Then it must be because someone among them knows the routine of our pack. Knows exactly when and where our weakest links are.” I indicated the file at that moment. “Most times, it’s only someone who's compromised that can do this. I do not think it is someone who's lived in this pack all their lives. So, I'm checking to see who has left this place in the past few years, and has just returned.” “If there truly is a spy among us, I'm not taking any risk. Man, woman, teenager- we have to screen every returnee.” “That’s a good plan. I had something similar in mind, and had actually come to you to explain. But I couldn't have said it better. It’s a very good plan.” “Of course it is. I thought of it.” I bared my teeth in a smile to which he responded with an eyeroll and a rare smile. We worked in silence, and I continued to scroll through the file, my nose scrunched up. Suddenly, I stumbled upon a name, and my eyes widened. “Gatrix-Hill had a daughter?” Julian looked up from his phone, confusion initially evident in his expression. Then he raised a brow. “Isn't that the person you're getting married to?” “No. That's Tanya.” I stared at the lady’s picture. She seemed familiar, somehow. “This one's name is Audrey.” He had a blank look on his face. “I once heard that he did. Didn't bother to verify.” “Interesting.” My eyes didn't- couldn't- leave the picture, for some odd reason. “She looks nothing like her sister.” He hummed. “Now that I think about it, I did hear one time that someone left the pack for the human civilization. That was years ago though, and…well, it could be her.” He shrugged and went back to his phone. My eyes glided across the page. “She just returned. This afternoon, in fact.” Hearing that, he glanced at me again. “Just after the rogue attack last night? Well, that's awfully convenient.” He was right. That was awfully convenient. I studied the lady's photo once more, and subconsciously brushed it with a thumb, suddenly filled with the desire to know her more. Then I snapped back to my senses. What was wrong with me? I was engaged to her sister! Immediately the thought seemed to wrap around my neck like a noose, and I got to my feet, catching Julian's attention. “What's the matter?” “I need to go for a run. Take care of things till I get back.” His black eyes regarded me, and I had the feeling he could read my mind. “Be careful.” I snorted and made for the door. “I always am.” I nodded at the people baring their necks to me as I passed, patting some of the children's heads- the only positive expression of love I allowed myself to show before the members of the pack. Father had taught me to be ruthless. Cold. My mother had died immediately after my birth, he said, on her bed. He’d come to pick me from the nurse’s arms later that night. And though I was his bastard son, I was his only heir, so he kept trying to make me as heartless as possible such that I wouldn't waver in the face of adversity. I'd done my best to live up to that, except I always crumbled when it came to love. I'd never known it. I craved it like a drug, and for years I'd sought for my mate, wanting to share that emotion with her and only her. I wanted to do everything my father had never done for my mother for her, and love her like mine had never been loved. “Alpha.” I paused, hearing the familiar voice, and lifted my head. Tanya Hill stood before me, glowing and looking every bit like the kind of woman I wanted to rule beside me. I might not have my mate, but I had her. And she was enough. I grinned when I saw her, admiring the way the sun lightened up her hair. “Tanya. How are you?” She beamed. “I'm alright, Alpha. I hope you're okay too.” “I'm very well. And I've told you before, call me Roman.” A blush formed on her face. “Well, I…Roman.” She was really beautiful. “It’s fortunate that I saw you here,” she continued with a smile. “I was going to visit your quarters later to discuss the wedding outfits with you. Mother has had this beautiful royal blue gown arranged for me, so I thought it would be amazing if we matched. What do you think?” “Whatever you wish. You'd look exquisite in anything.” A brief picture of that lady I'd seen in the file flashed through my mind, dressed in the most beautiful blue gown I'd ever seen. What in the love of Luna- “Are you okay with wearing a blue suit?” I blinked. Tanya had an expectant look on her face. What was wrong with me? “Roman?” She was enough. “Yes,” I breathed, focusing on her. “I am.” The smile on her face somehow got even brighter. “You’d look really handsome in it, I’m sure. Well, um…that's all I wanted to find out. I'll be on my way now Roman.” I nodded, watching her as she walked away, before continuing to the woods. I really needed a run.I raced through the woods, my senses on high alert though my mind was heady with the scent of musk. There was no better feeling than that of trampling the ground with my paws, and my wolf let out a howl of the ecstasy that we both shared. A while later, I padded down a small clearing, taking note of the sounds around me, making sure there was no threat. And there wasn't. Till everywhere became silent. Rogues. I could smell them. Heart pounding, I trained my ears to listen to their heartbeats and movements, and when the first one appeared, I was ready. A loud cry of pain pierced through the air as I tore it apart, ensuring it was dead before facing the next one charging towards me. I'd just thrown the last one down when a sharp pain struck my chest, and I collapsed, wheezing multiple times before letting darkness embrace me.♠︎♠︎♠︎♠︎♠︎Audrey POV: I'd been wandering through the woods, savoring the feeling I was never able to enjoy when I heard groaning. Roman POV:It felt like a thousand needles were stuck to my chest as I gained consciousness, and everywhere was dark. I forced myself to regulate my breath till the memories came flooding back to me and opened my eyes, only to shut them back because they were momentarily blinded. “What the hell-” A gasp from my left caused me to peel them open again, and my gaze met that of a stupefied nurse, who let out another sound and fled the room.Seconds later, a few people rushed into the room, and I raised a brow at their panicked faces. “What's going on here?”“You’re okay,” a voice I recognized as Julian's said. His usually nonchalant expression was replaced by one of relief, and I felt slightly uncomfortable. “Of course I am,” I huffed, attempting to sit up. “What am I doing here-shit?"” The nurses immediately scrambled to help me as I fell back, pain shooting across my shoulder. “Do you remember what you're doing here now?” Julian said, his face hovering over mine as the nurses fussed
Though I vaguely recalled her saying that she had to get the bullet out. I didn’t think Luna would have to go through that stress if she'd been the one.Which left the other option her scent had caused me to assume, as stupid as it sounded. She was one of the servants in the temple constructed for the goddess.I mean, that would make a lot of sense. Why she had such an addictive scent, why she was brazen enough to touch my wolf and even…even kiss him.I groaned and turned my face from the ceiling, choosing to focus more on the irritating infirmary odor. I'd go looking for her as soon as I was out. I stayed like that for what felt like and might have actually been hours, occasionally tossing to the other side in a bid to stretch. But the doctor came around once again and told me not to, as the stitches could pull out. I entered a bad mood after hearing that, and I found it hard to conceal my frown as the nurses arrived later to re-dress my wound. They hadn't finished when the door sl
As much as I didn't like my current life, I liked my head on my neck. Thank you very much. I was still contemplating my very existence when the door opened, revealing Diane. She raised a brow at my terribly scattered room, then gave me a disapproving look. “I believe I taught you better than this, Audrey.” I hated that look. “I'm sorry. I'd tidy up soon.” The expression on her face said she preferred immediately rather than soon, but I was a full adult now. She couldn't order me around like she used to. Finally, after the battle of emotions that crossed her face, she decided on looking nonchalant. “Jacob is downstairs.” My eyes widened. “Jake?”“Yes. He's been here for a while, actually, but has been talking with Tanya about the wedding. You know, as the Gamma, he's in charge of the security team for the ceremony.”“...he’s the Gamma?!” She gave up on nonchalance and shot me an irritated look. “Has been for the past few months. You'd have known if you weren't such a coward.” I
The man I'd rescued was staring straight at me. The level of my horror went up when Jake followed my gaze and spoke. “Oh, that's the Alpha.” ♠︎♠︎♠︎♠︎Roman POV:“You have to admit, he does a good job,” I chuckled when Julian complained about Jacob, the incubent gamma of the pack, for the umpteenth time. I'd been strolling around the compound with him, studying the security arrangements to search for possible loopholes, and had decided to call on Tanya at her home, so we were on the way to the Hill house. My best friend scoffed and pulled the cap on his head even lower, completely obstructing the light falling on his face. “When I held the position of both Gamma and Beta for just three weeks, I did far better work.” “You’d been Beta for over two years. He's just stepping in. Cut him some slack.” Julian mumbled something along the lines of ‘Whatever’, and I was about to laugh again when a fruity scent filled my nostrils, causing me to pause my movements. He noticed and stopped,
A low growl came from Julian, and the man laughed. “Foolish Beta, you're not my problem. You're just a dog.” Contrary to how others would have acted, Julian scoffed. “I'm almost insulted. Surely you have something better than saying that a werewolf is a dog.” The man snarled at Julian's quick retort and dropped the knife, choosing to wrap his hand around the teenage girl's neck and her to scream in pain. Julian frowned, and our opponent smiled in response. “Here's what we're going to do, hm? You're going to cut off the head of your Alpha and throw it over to me here. I confirm that he's dead. The girl is free. I confirm that he's not dead, I take her back home and give her some ladylike treatment.” A lustful look showed in his eyes as he looked her over.I was at my breaking point. “So…you’re performing all these shenanigans because you want me dead, but you're too cowardly to kill me yourself?” “I don’t want to hear your voice anymore. Julian! Kill your fucking Alpha,” he spat.
“I have to unpack! Bye!” I cried, running upstairs to avoid whatever she was going to say. She had nothing against Jacob, but there was a possibility of her asking questions I didn't want to answer. A big smile was on my face when I looked into the huge mirror that had been in my room since I was nine. Just as I'd left it, photos of my high school moments were pasted all around the border, and there were sticky notes that my younger self had written, detailing my growth over the years. My hand itched to add another note, but I restrained myself. I'd gone through a lot of shit in those years, which was why I'd distracted myself with the cute notes. However, I was older now - little rubbish like that couldn't solve real-world problems. The smile I'd had before due to Jacob's actions dimmed, and I looked away from the mirror.“Life is just amazing,” I sarcastically said to myself. Then I picked up my bag to actually unpack, not because I'd told Diane that, but because I was going to d
Roman POV:“This is bad,” Jacob said, his expression grim. I'd called for a meeting with him and Julian, and had just finished explaining the situation of things. Julian unfolded his arms and pushed himself off the wall. “You think?” My Gamma frowned, and I could see that he terribly wanted to punch him, but he kept a stoic face and focused on me. “Can I see the note?”Wordlessly, I pulled it out of a file and showed him. His expression turned grimmer still. “Shit.”I nodded. “Shit is real.”In the corner, Julian let out a snort. Jacob and I ignored him. “What do you have in mind, Alpha?” I rubbed my chin. “I have an idea of who these people are, but I'm not sure. Have you heard of the Crimson Wolves?” He furrowed his brows and then released them. “They're the ones rumored to have killed the last national pack chairman, yes?” I nodded, slightly impressed. “They are. But that's not all there is to them. They’ve been known to head assassination attempts in various packs around Am
If I could describe it, I'd call it electric. Just like the time our eyes met.“Can I-” he paused, seeming surprised that his voice had dropped by an octave, then chuckled embarrassedly. “No. It's too soon.”“What is?” I whispered, not wanting to distort the mood that had been created.I didn't miss the way his gaze dropped my lips and slowly traveled back up to my eyes, and my wolf protested when he stepped back from me. “It's nothing. I'll be back soon.” “But Alpha-”“Oh, and,” he said with a slight frown. “You should stop calling me Alpha. Call me Roman.” Immediately, I shook my head. “That would make it seem like I'm competing with Tanya for your heart. I won't…I can't do that. Not to her.”Hearing my stepsister's name, his eyes dimmed, and he looked away. “It doesn't matter anymore.”I was pretty sure I had a confused expression at that moment. “What do you mean? You two are engaged to be married in a few hours. How can you say it doesn't matter…” I trailed off, a random though
I couldn't deny the truth. “I'm so sorry, Tanya. I didn't mean for it to happen-” “It’s my fault.” There were tears in her eyes now. “I should never have told Mother to ask her to come back home. Then we would have gotten married, and I'd have been yours. You would have been mine. It's my fault.”“Tanya-” “I hate her so much.” The solemn way she dropped that statement made me pause. “...what?”Her tear-stained eyes looked directly at me, and I saw a storm blooming in them. “I said,” she sniffed. “That I hate her. I hate her so much.”Then she turned and fled.Julian came out not long after that with on unconscious Diane. “Had to put her out,” he grimaced, opening the door of a car I hadn't noticed before. “She was calling me a child.” I didn't know how to reply to that.He waved me over after he'd got into the driver's seat. “Get in. You need to give that official statement of yours, and soon. Diane's goons are still there.” I did as he'd said, and soon after, I'd dropped Audrey
After checking her out, the doctor told me that she'd ingested silver, but not up to the lethal dose. Which was why she still lived. Otherwise, she would have died. I'd wondered where she'd gotten it from till I remembered the silver handcuffs on the wall that were used to chain prisoners while in the cell. I hadn't had the heart to use it on her, but hearing that she'd tried to kill herself using it…Jacob was right again, I thought as I rocked her now warm body. She'd been miserable. And it'd been my fault. She was obviously scared, and despite finding out that she was my mate, she'd begged me not to leave Tanya. She'd pleaded her case multiple times. Despite what I'd thought, locking her up hadn't been the best solution. There could have been alternatives. I sighed and cuddled her closer to me, my wolf letting out a small sound of pleasure at the contact, and we stayed there in silence for a while till I heard loud noises.Less than a minute later, Diane stood at the door of the
“Thank you, Marcus.” She laughed again and tapped his arm thrice. “I must say, I wasn't sure you were going to make it.” His green eyes roamed her body shamelessly. “For you, Diane, how could I not? You're a very good friend.”A few meters away, Julian wanted to vomit. But he forced himself to stay put and survey the perimeter for more threats apart from Diane and the infamous Marcus Henderson. He'd been very close to dethroning that king a couple of times in his covert operations but failed each time. Hearing that fool flirt with Diane like they were horny teenagers caused invisible leeches to feast on his intestines. Roman hadn't responded to his calls that morning, neither had he texted. And when Julian had decided to visit his home, he'd found it empty. The thought of Roman going to the prison to see Audrey had floated in, but he'd pushed it out almost immediately. Even if he'd done that, he couldn't, or, shouldn't have waited till the following morning. That would be a reckles
He looked surprised at my question, then turned away. “She's not good at all. And she’s malnourished.”I frowned at that. “I specifically told the warden to give her food-” “She's not eating it,” he interjected, the scowl back on his face. “She's deliberately starving herself, Alpha. Because she wishes to die.” It seemed like a silver knife was lodged in my chest at those words. I stared at him in disbelief. “What do you mean by she wishes to die? It’s only been about a week and a half since she was detained-” “It's been about a week and a half to you, Alpha, to her? To her, it's like an eternity!” As soon as he said that, he turned on his heels and stomped off, leaving me stupefied. The following day, when darkness had ruled for about four hours, I stepped out of my house to visit the prison. I would have gone the night before, but Tanya had called, and I was unable to leave the call as early as I wanted to. Jacob surely wasn't serious, I thought as I marched down the path to
Roman POV:The elders murmured among themselves after I dropped the information about the rogue attack. Julian and Jacob stood behind me, both of them looking like they wanted to flee the room.I wanted to as well. But for the sake of the pack, we remained. “That's the third one in less than three weeks,” someone commented. “This is getting worse.” “It's like they just spring out of nowhere!” Kennedy yelled, slamming his fist onto the table. I frowned at that but kept my peace. “What in Luna's name is going on?!” “My Beta has some reports he'd like to give,” I announced. Julian nodded when I called him up and stepped forward. The expression on some of the elders’ faces switched to disgust, while some exuded fear. The child of the former Alpha's maid, now Beta, is rumored to be a killing machine. They weren't wrong on both counts. I pursed my lips, recalling the way my best friend sped to Audrey and captured her neck in a vice grip. I'd spoken to him earlier and warned him never
“Beta Julian!” Jacob yelled. “Beta, please, let her go. There are better ways to discuss this.” The Alpha was quiet. The Beta turned to my best friend and raised me even higher so that I was now gasping. “I should let her go, hm?” His eyes were blazing, but his voice remained deathly calm. “Read the letter.” Jacob didn't move. “She's about to choke to death. She needs proper trial first before we condemn her for whatever-” “Read the damn note, Jacob.” The man turned to glare at me. “Then you'll find out why she's a traitor.” “I…” I wheezed. “I really *cough* didn't do that-” My lungs were burning, and I was struggling to take air in. The Beta, on the other hand, looked like he could do that all day. His eyes flashed with anger as he tightened his grip.“Let her go, Julian,” a familiar voice with a withdrawn tone said, just as I was about to become unconscious.“Roman.” The Beta sounded disgruntled.“Now.” I could sense the reluctance in his gaze as he released his hold on me,
“What do you want?” I snapped. “Mate,” it complained, startling and annoying me at the same time. I hadn't expected it to refer to her at this point in time. “Injured.” I didn't register the meaning immediately, but when I did, I ran to the person who had groaned. Sure enough, my supposed mate lay on the floor, but she was in her wolf form. I stared at her, first wondering why I couldn't perceive that sweet scent of hers, then asking myself what the hell she was doing outside the pack house.Jacob had apparently placed the entire pack house on lockdown, meaning that no one would have been able to leave the compound if they hadn't snuck out. In that situation, I should have been able to perceive it everywhere as soon as I arrived on the scene, unless she... Unless she'd attempted to hide her scent.Julian's words rang through my mind, and I almost let out a growl. I didn’t care that we were mates. If I found out that she was the reason my pack was experiencing trouble, I was goi
I mean, it made so much sense now, seeing the type of person she was normally. But finding out that she and my stepmother had once again forsaken proper tradition for their selfish interest had me stumped. Knowing Diane, she'd most likely used a very convincing method to rope the Alpha in, and I almost felt sorry for him. I was also very angry considering the fact that it was my mate who'd been roped into such a thing. “That dress looked terrible on you, by the way,” she suddenly said, and I was pulled out of my reverie. I almost thought I hadn't heard her properly. “...what?” She smiled up at me, looking so innocent that one would not believe it was venom dripping from her words. “That thing I said outside about the dress being lovely on you was a lie. I just didn't want him to think his offer to pay was not appreciated.” I stared at her in disbelief, my initial thoughts now shoved to the back of my mind. “You could have just told me. I'd have returned it instead of-” “Bad as i
