Roman POV:
“Alpha.” I nodded as the elders I'd assembled for a meeting bared their necks to me in obeisance, then took a seat, allowing them to do so as well before lapsing into momentary silence. Finally, I spoke. “We have a problem.” A disturbed look crossed most of their faces. “A problem?” one echoed. I nodded. “I apologize for calling you all so late-” “This is ridiculous.” I paused and looked at the man who'd interrupted. His hair was greying at the sides, and his forehead already boasted of wrinkles. An alarmingly large amount of crow’s feet lined his eyes. Despite that, the pride and authority in his voice could not be mistaken. I stared at him, my mind bringing up his profile. Aaron Kennedy, former Epsilon. Annoying fellow, according to my late father. Always seemed to have a stick up his ass. Recently, he'd been a stick up my ass. “What are you referring to, Aaron?” My voice was low, but powerful enough to remind him of whose presence he was before. The man glared at me, not hiding his disgust. “This meeting is ridiculous. We’re in the evening, for crying out loud. Couldn't you have called for a meeting tomorrow? The least you could do is-” I raised a brow. “I just said we have a problem.” “We still could have slept on it and reconvened tomorrow-” “The rogues attacked again.” A hush fell over us, and I watched his expression change from that of annoyance to shock, then to naked fear. “Great goddess.” My eyebrow rose. “Precisely. Now do you see why it cannot wait till tomorrow, Kennedy?” He flinched when he heard the tone in my voice, but I looked away before I could see the partial regret in his eyes. There were much more important things, like my people being killed. I'd been in my room when the guard mindlinked me, groaning in pain. It'd taken a minute or two for me to run out into the woods, but by that time, about three casualties had been incurred. I signaled Julian to give a brief report on the occurrence and when he concluded it, the elders had pensive looks on their faces. “The attacks are a lot more calculated,” another of the elders said, concerned. “It's almost like they're targeting us, rather than just engaging in their usual violent ways.” “But that is not the way of the rogues,” Aaron replied, his brows furrowed. “They're nomads, and they're unruly. They do not know their left from their right, and they have no sense of moral-” “We know all that, Kennedy. Say something new,” a female said, rolling her eyes. I recognized her as one of the leading guards in my father's time. She was retired now, but there was a sharpness in her eyes that made it clear she was still very capable of dismembering someone and being proud of it. There was a scowl on Aaron's face as he spoke again. “That was unnecessary, Lottie.” “Please,” she snorted. “Do not act as though you know what is truly important and what is not.” I resisted the urge to snicker. She wasn't wrong. When I was much younger, my father used to tell me a lot of stories about his advisory council, and I liked the tales of Aaron Kennedy the most. He rarely knew what priorities were. But that wasn't my priority. A very serious issue had occurred. I cleared my throat, stopping any further bickering. “I have sent scouts into the woods to survey the area. If we find any group of rogues, the pack house would be alerted. In the meantime, we need to get a strategy against these encroachers. There's no way I'm going to sit back and let them take my people’s lives just like that. It's one for the other. Either they go, or we go.” Anger bubbled up inside me. “And we're definitely not going.” Despite all the clashes we'd had, the elders knew when to set aside our differences for a common goal. Our families’ lives were at stake, and they were fully aware of that. “We agree.” “We bow to no one.” “Good.” I gave them all a satisfactory look. “The former guards here and my highest ranking soldiers would meet later today by 4 p.m., so we can draw up a plan. In the meantime, I would like everyone here to reinforce security in their homes. A memo would go round very soon, so others will be aware of this.” My gaze swept across the room, doing its best to look at everyone as directly as it could. “That would be all. Any inquiries?” Fortunately, there were none. A little less than an hour later, Julian had his arms crossed as he leaned against a wall, while I searched for a file. “You handled it well,” he said. “I'm just glad no one mentioned my engagement to Tanya,” I snorted, finding the document and dumping it on the desk. “I'd have been pissed.” Silence greeted my statement and I looked up to see him giving me his usual hooded look. “What now?” He blinked, then sighed and helped himself to the chair opposite mine. “I'm confused.” I raised a brow. “Whyever would you be?” “You. And Tanya. It's not…something feels off.” I furrowed my brow. “That's my fiancée you're talking about, Julian.” “I thought you were looking for your mate.” His voice, as usual, was resigned. Low. Almost emotionless. Hearing his statement, my jaw ticked and my gaze went to the document before me. “Things have changed.” He was quiet for a moment. “Are you sure? Or are you just giving up?” I rubbed my temple. “I'm trying to move on. So what if I don't find my mate? Does that mean I should never find love or affection?” “What if your mate appears the day you two get married? Do you know what a mess that would be?” “She could have appeared all this while.” I was pretty sure my voice had dropped by an octave. “She didn't. It's not my fault.” “That doesn't mean you should go for the entitled brat-” I whipped my head in his direction faster than I could blink. “Don't you dare talk about my future wife that way.” “...right.” He pursed his lips, stood, and bared his neck. “Excuse me, Alpha.” The room went silent after he left, and I tried to read the document before me. It was impossible. I closed the file and groaned. Curse Julian and his ability to make me question my decisions. Tanya wasn't as bad as he made her out to be, She was sweet, and thoughtful, and had a beautiful laugh. It also didn't hurt that her beauty was exceptional. But he was right. I was taking a huge risk, marrying Tanya. I was just thirty; I could still wait. Werewolves had an incredibly long life span, and I knew of a few who'd found their mates at even fifty. However, that wasn’t my only reason for marrying her. I had an agenda. Tanya's father and the former Gamma, Bernard Gatrix-Hill, was a ruthless soldier in the pack’s Guard. He killed many men in battle, but he was extremely hot headed. My father, however, had no problem with that. The problem lay in his loyalty. It was said that Gatrix-Hill might have been in cahoots with some rogues just before he died, as he was annoyed when the position of Alpha was given- well, forced upon me, if you recall that lethal look on my father's face when I tried to fight against the decision. He apparently wanted it for himself. So when Diane Hill came to me with the proposition to marry her daughter, it'd been like a blessing in disguise. By marrying Tanya, I'd prevent problems between the pack and the Hill family, as well as keeping them close so I could monitor their plans. Even if Bernard was gone, who said Diane wasn’t the new person in charge of the apparent discussions with the rogues? I dragged a hand through my face and sighed. A lot was happening all at once. I just hoped the moon goddess would have mercy on my predicament and relieve whoever was supposed to be my mate of that burden.Audrey POV:“Audrey Hill.” The guard looked at me with a blank expression for some seconds, causing me to inwardly squirm. “Proof of identity?” I reached into my bag for my ID, feeling sad. Diane hadn't come to pick me at the gate. As usual, she'd left me to fend for myself. And as usual, I was accepting what seemed like the inevitable. I'd never been her priority anyway. It'd always been Tanya, seeing as I wasn't her blood.Sometimes I'd doubted I was my father's blood, too. But at least he tried his best.“Identified. Welcome, Audrey Hill, daughter of previous Gamma of Rhinestone Pack, Bernard Gatrix-Hill.” Gatrix. My grandfather's name. It'd been so long since I heard anyone say it in relation to my family. Before my dad's death, Gatrix-Hill had been my last name, too. But Diane refused to bear it, saying it was somewhat ‘tacky’.At the time, I kind of agreed with her, and had been terribly grateful when she convinced him to change it for me too. But hearing it from the guard f
Roman POV: “What are you doing?” I looked up from the file I was poring over, surprised that I’d been so engrossed I hadn't heard Julian come in. After the argument we had the other day, it'd taken a while, but we'd finally made up. “Glossing through some files.” He folded his arms and inclined his head to the side. “It looks like you're doing a lot more than glossing to me. You didn’t even hear me walk in.” I snorted and closed the document. “Well, I was glossing intently through those files.” “Mm-hmm. Those files wouldn’t happen to be related to the rogue case, would they?” “...well.” He plopped down on a nearby chair. “That's supposed to be my job, but okay.” “I had the time,” I responded, but even I knew that was a lie. I just needed to do something. “Right. What do you have?” “Just like Pascal said during the last meeting, these attacks are well thought out. As though the rogues know exactly when they're supposed to attack, and how they're to move when they do.” “
I raced through the woods, my senses on high alert though my mind was heady with the scent of musk. There was no better feeling than that of trampling the ground with my paws, and my wolf let out a howl of the ecstasy that we both shared. A while later, I padded down a small clearing, taking note of the sounds around me, making sure there was no threat. And there wasn't. Till everywhere became silent. Rogues. I could smell them. Heart pounding, I trained my ears to listen to their heartbeats and movements, and when the first one appeared, I was ready. A loud cry of pain pierced through the air as I tore it apart, ensuring it was dead before facing the next one charging towards me. I'd just thrown the last one down when a sharp pain struck my chest, and I collapsed, wheezing multiple times before letting darkness embrace me.♠︎♠︎♠︎♠︎♠︎Audrey POV: I'd been wandering through the woods, savoring the feeling I was never able to enjoy when I heard groaning. Roman POV:It felt like a thousand needles were stuck to my chest as I gained consciousness, and everywhere was dark. I forced myself to regulate my breath till the memories came flooding back to me and opened my eyes, only to shut them back because they were momentarily blinded. “What the hell-” A gasp from my left caused me to peel them open again, and my gaze met that of a stupefied nurse, who let out another sound and fled the room.Seconds later, a few people rushed into the room, and I raised a brow at their panicked faces. “What's going on here?”“You’re okay,” a voice I recognized as Julian's said. His usually nonchalant expression was replaced by one of relief, and I felt slightly uncomfortable. “Of course I am,” I huffed, attempting to sit up. “What am I doing here-shit?"” The nurses immediately scrambled to help me as I fell back, pain shooting across my shoulder. “Do you remember what you're doing here now?” Julian said, his face hovering over mine as the nurses fussed
Though I vaguely recalled her saying that she had to get the bullet out. I didn’t think Luna would have to go through that stress if she'd been the one.Which left the other option her scent had caused me to assume, as stupid as it sounded. She was one of the servants in the temple constructed for the goddess.I mean, that would make a lot of sense. Why she had such an addictive scent, why she was brazen enough to touch my wolf and even…even kiss him.I groaned and turned my face from the ceiling, choosing to focus more on the irritating infirmary odor. I'd go looking for her as soon as I was out. I stayed like that for what felt like and might have actually been hours, occasionally tossing to the other side in a bid to stretch. But the doctor came around once again and told me not to, as the stitches could pull out. I entered a bad mood after hearing that, and I found it hard to conceal my frown as the nurses arrived later to re-dress my wound. They hadn't finished when the door sl
As much as I didn't like my current life, I liked my head on my neck. Thank you very much. I was still contemplating my very existence when the door opened, revealing Diane. She raised a brow at my terribly scattered room, then gave me a disapproving look. “I believe I taught you better than this, Audrey.” I hated that look. “I'm sorry. I'd tidy up soon.” The expression on her face said she preferred immediately rather than soon, but I was a full adult now. She couldn't order me around like she used to. Finally, after the battle of emotions that crossed her face, she decided on looking nonchalant. “Jacob is downstairs.” My eyes widened. “Jake?”“Yes. He's been here for a while, actually, but has been talking with Tanya about the wedding. You know, as the Gamma, he's in charge of the security team for the ceremony.”“...he’s the Gamma?!” She gave up on nonchalance and shot me an irritated look. “Has been for the past few months. You'd have known if you weren't such a coward.” I
The man I'd rescued was staring straight at me. The level of my horror went up when Jake followed my gaze and spoke. “Oh, that's the Alpha.” ♠︎♠︎♠︎♠︎Roman POV:“You have to admit, he does a good job,” I chuckled when Julian complained about Jacob, the incubent gamma of the pack, for the umpteenth time. I'd been strolling around the compound with him, studying the security arrangements to search for possible loopholes, and had decided to call on Tanya at her home, so we were on the way to the Hill house. My best friend scoffed and pulled the cap on his head even lower, completely obstructing the light falling on his face. “When I held the position of both Gamma and Beta for just three weeks, I did far better work.” “You’d been Beta for over two years. He's just stepping in. Cut him some slack.” Julian mumbled something along the lines of ‘Whatever’, and I was about to laugh again when a fruity scent filled my nostrils, causing me to pause my movements. He noticed and stopped,
A low growl came from Julian, and the man laughed. “Foolish Beta, you're not my problem. You're just a dog.” Contrary to how others would have acted, Julian scoffed. “I'm almost insulted. Surely you have something better than saying that a werewolf is a dog.” The man snarled at Julian's quick retort and dropped the knife, choosing to wrap his hand around the teenage girl's neck and her to scream in pain. Julian frowned, and our opponent smiled in response. “Here's what we're going to do, hm? You're going to cut off the head of your Alpha and throw it over to me here. I confirm that he's dead. The girl is free. I confirm that he's not dead, I take her back home and give her some ladylike treatment.” A lustful look showed in his eyes as he looked her over.I was at my breaking point. “So…you’re performing all these shenanigans because you want me dead, but you're too cowardly to kill me yourself?” “I don’t want to hear your voice anymore. Julian! Kill your fucking Alpha,” he spat.
Roman POV:“You did quite well,” Julian said to me while I watched Jacob supervise the cleaning of the conference room. It'd been about fifteen minutes since the meeting ended, and a part of me had reveled in the fear the elders had in their eyes whenever they crossed the body of their dead comrade. “You really didn't have to kill anyone though.”“They are infuriating,” I said emotionlessly as the cleaners began their job. “It was high time they learned that I wasn't just the old Alpha's son. I am the Alpha.” My best friend gave me a look. “I hope that doesn't mean you plan to resort to the harsh ways of your father.”“Never,” I grunted. “But I'll have to place some respect in these elders’ hearts. They need to be reminded of their position before me.” My Beta merely passed a breath through his mouth. “If you say so, Roman. I just really hope you're not using your anger with your mate's disappearance to cloud your greater sense of judgment.” “Audrey's disappearance has nothing to
Audrey POV:I gawked as Sam opened a portal the moment I accepted his hand. He grinned at me while the magic door pulsated with energy, and placed a leg into it. “Come on, young lady.”I hesitated, suddenly feeling very unsure and stupid. The moment he extended his hand, I'd snatched it without thinking. As soon as he opened the portal, it hit me. Just who exactly was I about to follow through a portal that only he knew that location it led to? Sure, he'd claimed to have known my father, but almost everyone knew my father then. Not only did I not know his true intentions, but he'd been part of the men that watched my humiliation. He cocked his head to the side when he saw my hesitation. “What's the matter?” “I don't know you. You might want to kill me,” I blurted, turning red when he began to laugh. “That's what you’re bothered about, darling?” he chuckled. “I just saved you from getting raped and potentially mauled by that piece of scum.” He stepped forward. “You really think you
Roman POV:“This is preposterous!” I glared at the elder who'd just spoken, and he wisely kept his mouth shut immediately. Lucky for him. I would have slit his throat if he made one more sound. I wasn't supposed to be here. I was supposed to be out saving Audrey. I was supposed to have gotten her into my arms, and rescued her from whatever hellhole Edward Kim had put her in. “I apologize for speaking out of turn, Alpha,” the elder who'd just interrupted my speech said, fear shining in his eyes. “I was just…I'm laden with emotion at how much torment this pack has fallen into.”I schooled my features into blankness. “Thank you so much for your concern, Logan, but you haven't even been around to know how much torment we are in right now.” He reddened and turned away, knowing what I'd said was true. Just like Diane Hill, he'd disappeared for a while, but he'd returned a bit earlier than she had. A nasty thought about him dying just like Kennedy and Hill crossed my mind, but i waved it
Audrey POV:I was returned to the dark room when the men had had enough of me. The visiting Brothers were not returning to their homes, so I was to be a spectacle for them again the following day. In the meantime, Derek wanted me to ‘rest’, which essentially meant he didn't want me to die yet. Normally I would have willingly killed myself to escape his torture, but I had people’s lives tied to mine. I had no idea what Edward Kim would do if I committed suicide. That would be against the deal we made, right? So I kept quiet and let Derek do whatever he wanted till he finally ended my life. My body was bruised all over again from the beatings Derek had given me, and every time I laid against the cold wall or put too much pressure on the side of my body that rested on the hard ground, I cried out in pain. I wanted to curl into a ball and cry, but I knew the would cause unimaginable agony. And Derek's words at the beginning about him wanting to hear me cry out in pain haunted me, so I f
Audrey POV:“I still don't know what exactly to do for her sendforth into the great beyond,” my holding master laughed as I coughed out blood, feeling the life slowly draining out of me. I'd been presented on a makeshift stage before some of the ‘Brothers’ that Derek had invited to watch my torture spectacle. They were surrounded by lots of food, and they chuckled at Derek's jokes while I writhed in pain. “Perhaps you should save her the torment of a prolonged death,” one of them said. “Just one swipe across her throat and you'll be done with it.”Derek seemed to consider the idea. “The issue now is, I don't want to do that. I don't want to be done with it so easily. She's still alive. Her eyes haven't lost their spark.” He bared his teeth playfully at me. “I need that spark to disappear first. Then I'll kill her.” Fear gripped me, and if my wrists weren't bound and my body hurting, I'd have attempted to slide away. “Any news from Kim?” another of the Brothers asked, spearing a pi
Tanya POV:“You did good,” Marvin said, placing a hand on my shoulder. “They didn't suspect a thing. I'm proud of you.” I didn't say a word, merely staring ahead, like I expected my mother to appear before me. The moment I heard the explosion, I'd sunk to my knees, crying out loud. Marvin had immediately gagged me again and held me close, being both good and evil at the same time. I'd leaned against him, too tired to decide what was right or fair and what wasn't. The following morning, I woke up cuffed to a chair, and he laid beside me, his eyes closed. However, the moment I shuffled, his eyes opened wide, and his gaze bored into mine. It was then I knew I wasn't going anywhere, no matter what he did to me. Not because I was afraid of him, but because I’d given myself to him. Mind, body and soul. For better, for worse, right? “Jacob is coming soon, so you'd better dress up.” His hand pressed on my shoulder. “And look very presentable.”I gave an almost imperceptible nod. Jacob had
Roman POV:“Hold on,” Julian said while I absentmindedly kicked a small rock along the road. “Your mother is…Ruby? Ruby is your mother? I don't understand.” It'd confused me too, but after I returned to my room, I found Ruby staring wide eyed at me. It hit me that she probably wasn't completely aware of what was happening with her. We were on our way to Marvin's apartment to pay a courtesy visit to Tanya regarding the destruction of the Hill residence. According to Julian, Diane Hill's body had still not been found, but the probability of her being burnt to ashes was much higher than the probability of her crawling out of the inferno. I didn't like the woman at all, but that didn't completely mean I wanted her gone. She was Tanya's backbone, from what I noticed when we together, and finding out about her mother's death must have been very hard for her. That's why I asked Julian to accompany me. “It really doesn't make any sense,” Julian was mumbling. “Did your mother go back in ti
Roman POV:“My son,” the woman before me said, a sad smile on her face. “My little boy.”I couldn't move, as my eyes roamed all over her face. She was the one, no doubt about it. Just as it had been in the portrait. But I couldn't go closer to her. It was as though each time I tried to move, something stopped me. “Am I dead?” I whispered, and she laughed. “No, you're not. You're in a different dimension, Roman.” The woman- no, not the woman- my mother smiled at me again, much brighter this time. “I had to bring you here so I could speak to you.” How was that possible? I voiced my thoughts, and Mother shrugged. “I…” she paused for a moment as if to think about her next thoughts. “This is going to be a very confusing discussion, but…let’s start with this. I’m a witch, Roman. Well, half-witch with a suppressed lycan side.” The silence in the room was frightening after that statement. I blinked once, twice, trying to wrap my head around her statement. She must have noticed the confus
Audrey POV:Derek came back a while later, a devilish grin on his face. “Hello, Princess.” I couldn't respond to him. I hadn't been given any food or water, and my wrists were bruising. I could feel the wounds that had been formed from the constant contact with the binding chain, and every slight movement was pain. He stood before me and surveyed my body, a gleam in his eyes. “Well, I'd say you look like shit, but you already know that.”The glare I gave him made him laugh, his shoulders jerking slightly. “Now, we're going to try something different. I'm going to take you off the wheel of death- get it?- and you're going to express your gratitude by sucking my dick. Is that understood?” My eyes widened, and he smiled even more broadly. “You heard me right, Sweetness. I'm very curious to see what Roman Blackburn has been enjoying. Because outwardly, there's only so much one can actually credit you for. I'll tell you though- your face isn't one of them. Your body, on the other hand…”
