She manages to hold back her tears but as soon as she steps into the house, the dam breaks.
She covers her mouth to reduce the noise from her sobs. Her back against the door, she continues crying forgetting that the maids are around.
She decides to go to her room to avoid any unnecessary attention on her. As she stands up from the floor, she sees a familiar figure descending from the stairs.
Confusion seeps into her facial expression as she sees her cousin, Sophia, take a seat on the sofa. Sophia is looking at her with a victorious smirk on her lips.
“What are you doing here Sophia?”. She walks to where she is sitting.
“I see that my fiancee has given you the divorce papers. I hope you signed them without a fuss”. Sophia looks at her nails, admiring the acrylic designs on them without a care in the world.
Ava stumbles back in shock. Her mouth opens and closes a few times in surprise.
“What do you mean by fiancee?”. She sputters out.
“I knew you were lazy but I didn’t know you were also dumb. What does fiancee mean?”. She says with a snare.
“So you knew about all this? How could you do this to me?!!”. She shouts at her.
“Oh darling. Let me remind you if you have forgotten. I am the one that was supposed to get married to Caleb in the first place but because of your father, you were able to steal him”. She says with so much disgust as if Ava is the other woman in the relationship.
“But…but you told me you were okay with it…”
“Yeah I was. Until he became a billionaire anyways. So I decided to get my man back”. At her statement, Ava doesn’t even whether to laugh or to cry at her thought process.
“So basically, you want to be with him now because of his money? Aren’t those traits of a gold digger?”. Sophia starts to chuckle at her question.
“You are quite funny, you know? I don’t reckon that you called yourself a gold digger when you took his $100,000 in exchange for a divorce”. Ava’s jaw goes slack.
“How do you know that?”
“Damn, she is dumb”, she facepalms.
“Dear cousin, I planned everything. He just did as he was told. I don’t know why he ended up giving you so much money because that wasn’t what we agreed on but I guess he must have pitied your jobless, penniless ass and decided to add more money. Did you perhaps get down on him?”.
She asks with a sly smirk. Unable to handle her anger anymore, Ava moves towards her and in one swift move, lands a hot slap on her face that resounds in the house.
Sophia’s face turns red immediately. Her eyes burn in fury as she raises her hand to touch the cheek that was assaulted.
“You bitch!!! How dare you?!”. She yells at the top of her voice, drawing the attention of the maids in the house, who starts coming out to watch the drama.
“I always regarded you as a sister even though you were always nasty to me. I still can’t believe you are behind all these!”. Tears start pricking the back of her eyes.
“You were always a thorn in my flesh! You always stole everything I wanted! I hate you to death!”. A sob escapes from Ava’s mouth but she quickly wipes her tears away.
“Then no problem. I will leave you and your ‘fiancee’. I will go far away from both of you. I hate both of you!”. She sidesteps and heads upstairs.
Surprisingly, Sophia doesn’t say anything as she leaves. Ava enters the room she has regarded as a safe space for two years.
With tears streaming down her cheeks uncontrollably, she starts packing her clothes and personal property into two suitcases.
After packing up, she stands in front of her mirror and places a hand on her stomach. With a wistful smile, she looks down on her stomach.
“Hey, little one. It looks like we are alone now. On the good side, we have each other. Although your father may not care about you, I promise to stand in for both sides. I will love you with all my heart. You are now my family and I am yours. I love you “. She wipes a stray tear and goes back to the bed to zip up her suitcase.
She carries both outside her room and calls for one of the butlers to help her with them. A minute later, one of the butlers arrives in front of her with a sympathetic smile.
As he carries the first suitcase down the stairs, Sophia sits on the sofa feeling victorious and on top of the world. To her, a slap is a little price to pay to be Caleb Reed’s wife.
“Hurry up! I don’t want her in this house for another minute”. The butler carries the second suitcase down and Ava follows behind.
Ava briefly contemplates messing with her mind and telling her that she is pregnant. But she figures that her cousin could try to cause her and the baby harm to get what she wants.
The Uber she ordered is just two minutes away so she starts dragging the suitcases towards the door. The butler helps her carry it outside.
When she gets to the door, she pauses to look around the house she had called home. Over the years, she was always consoled with the fact that she now had a home that she could call hers without a shadow of doubt.
Turns out it would be taken away from her the same way other things have been taken from her. Her parents, the house she grew up in, her home, and now, even her husband.
She makes a silent vow to protect her child no matter what it takes. The Uber driver calls her to inform her that he is there.
The butler helps her get the suitcases into the boot and bids her goodbye.
They drive off with Ava looking at the side mirror to see the house. With a deep sigh, she accepts her new reality.
FOUR YEARS LATER “We are having some scenes shot in America”. Her manager says. She abruptly stands up in shock at his statement. “America why? I didn’t see that in the script you gave me”. She rushes to him with the script in her hands. Ava starts flipping crazily trying to prove to him that there is no mention of any scenes being shot in America. Her manager, on the other hand, looks her at weirdly. He collects the script from her. She looks at him, shocked, as he waves the script high above her head. Defeatedly, she sighs. “Take a deep breath sista! What’s all the fuss for? The director changed the location at the last minute, claiming that it would give the scene more depth, whatever that means.” Ava stalks to a chair and sits down in a plop with an upset look on her face. “It’s not that.” She releases a breath. Chris comes to stand in front of her, resting his behind on the edge of the table with his hands crossed in front of him. “Then what is
Ava comes out of the plane with Aurora asleep in her arms. Chris follows closely behind with their bags with him. While waiting for their bags to be cleared, Aurora wakes up and rubs her eyes. “Hey baby. You don’t want to sleep anymore?”. She gives her a peck on her chubby cheeks while tucking stray hairs away from her face. “Mama”. Aurora says looking upset. She knows that she is hungry and that is the only reason she is looking upset. “Don’t worry, we can get this done then I’ll get you some food. Okay?”. Aurora nods in reluctant agreement. Her eyes were wide open; she started scanning the environment. They are soon done with the clearing of their bags and they go to the lounge. “Let me go and see if the driver is here yet”. Chris informs her. “Oh okay. I can just get her some snacks in the meantime”. Chris heads towards the door while Ava puts her on the chair. “Aurora, mummy is going to get some food for you. Don’t leave here please. Okay?”. She pinc
The man picks up Aurora who is still sobbing with her lower lip out as she sniffles. He pulls at her cheeks as he smiles adoringly at her. “Hey little one. I’m so sorry you fell”. He pats her hair. He looks into her green eyes that remind him of hers. She finally smiles at him and someone else’s image comes into his mind. He shakes his head trying to get rid of it. He reciprocates her smile. He turns to his sister with a huge smile. However, his sister looks impatient. Knowing the kind of person she is, he removes his phone from his pocket and sends a text to his driver. “I just sent a text to the driver. He will be here soon. You can just go to the lounge to wait for him”. He informs her. She nods and leaves in the direction of the lounge without saying a word. Caleb heaves a sigh of relief the minute she leaves. He had come to pick her up from the airport to prevent her from complaining about being abandoned later on. He had even hoped that she would ha
Ava's eyes widened in shock as she locked eyes with Caleb's equally stunned face, her world coming to a sudden halt."Mama!" Aurora called to her mother, arms outstretched, snapping Ava out of her frozen state.Walking towards her daughter, Ava's expression quickly shifted to relief. She leaned forward, gently retrieving Aurora from Caleb's arms and securing her in her own before taking a few steps away from the still stunned Caleb."You had Mommy worried sick," Ava said, pinching Aurora's cheek gently. "Don't ever go off on your own again, okay?" she scolded gently. Aurora nodded in response."I made a new friend, Mommy," Aurora said, pointing towards Caleb and bringing her mother's attention back to the man she was desperately trying to avoid eye contact with."Thank you for finding my daughter," Ava said quietly to Caleb, avoiding his eyes as she mumbled her words. She quickly turned around and left with Aurora, not wanting to be in the same space as Caleb for even a second longer.
As she finished drying her hair, her phone began to ring, prompting her to pick it up to see who was calling. Noticing it was Chris, she answered the call promptly."Hey," Chris's calm and smooth voice greeted her as the call connected. "Are you settled in?""Yeah. Aurora just fell asleep," Ava responded, her gaze lingering on her daughter."I'm going out for lunch soon. Would you like to join me?""Sure. Just give me a minute to get dressed," Ava said, rising from the bed and walking towards the wardrobe to choose an outfit."Okay. I'll wait for you in the lobby," Chris replied before ending the call. After deciding on a simple casual outfit, Ava let her hair down and checked on Aurora once more before grabbing her bag and phone and leaving the room.Chris sat comfortably in the hotel lobby, his gaze fixed on his phone as he made necessary schedule changes for the upcoming movie shoot, scheduled in two days, while waiting for Ava to arrive. Finally, he caught a glimpse of her approac
Chapter 8When Caleb showed no intention of reciprocating the kiss, she tried to deepen it, but he pulled away. She attempted to lean in again, only to have him place a hand on her shoulder, keeping her at arm's length."Not tonight, Sophia," he said, causing her face to fall as he picked up her robe from the bed.Caleb walked back to Sophia and handed her the robe. "Put it on," he commanded, his voice firm yet calm."But—" Sophia began, but Caleb cut her off. "Just put it on, Sophia," he repeated, his tone more forceful this time, causing her to flinch.Reluctantly, Sophia took the robe from him and put it on, her forehead creased with frustration."I'm really tired. You should use the other room tonight," He stated, his words sounding like an order rather than a suggestion."But we always sleep together," Sophia protested, her fists clenched tightly. However, the seriousness in Caleb's expression made her think twice about arguing further."Okay," she conceded, forcing a smile. "Go
One would think that he was going to back down from going after her but no, it was not someone like Caleb Reed. He followed behind her like someone who was chasing after those who took something from him. His driver would look at him, expecting him to say something about them stopping and turning back but he kept a straight face. When he saw that his driver was stealing glances at him. He dropped his phone and looked at him. " Is anything the problem?" He asked him. " You will be late for work, should we not turn back and head to the office instead?" " The last time I checked, I was the one paying for your services, isn't that so?" " My apologies sir," he said as he slightly bowed his head. Caleb was a bit pissed with his driver, but his mood changed when he could see Ava clearly. A smile appeared on his face as his lips curved into a happy grin. His face turned into a frown almost immediately as he wondered why he was overly happy to see her. He thought to himself that he sho
Ava Martin was on the screen as one of the top Actresses in the city. The shoot for that day was over and she was back home. She was in front of the television, watching the news, it was about her being so good at what she does. There was a bowl of popcorn in front of her and a cup of juice as well. She would dip her hands into the bowl and take some popcorn from it. She would also stretch herself to take the drink as well. Chris walked into the room. He had not gone yet, and that was because Aurora would not let him go; he had to follow them to the hotel room so he could please Aurora. " You are so good. Look who is on the screen again," he said. " They can not do without me, I happen to make the news, I'm the one always talked about" " I guess I manage you so well. Look who is being recognized again and again." he raised his shoulders up at how good he was at managing Ava. " I should get your pay increased," Ava burst out laughing. " That should not be a joke," he said. H
She held her phone in her hands as she looked at the number, staring her back in the face. She wondered if it was necessary or if she could just go ask Ava if Caleb had been after her lately. " She is not going to answer me or tell me what I want to know," she sighed. She went ahead and dialed the number. She held the phone, waiting for him to pick it up. " Hey, how is it going with you?" She asked as soon as he picked up. " I'm good; it's been a while. Do you have a job for me?" his husked voice was heard from the other end of the phone. " Yes, can we meet up? I will send you the address" she said as she ended the call. She did not want the maid to know what she was talking about as she was still in Caleb's house. She turned her head and saw a maid standing close to her, she flew back in fear. Then she went closer to the maid. " Tell me, did you hear anything at all?" " I heard nothing, ma'am," she said fearfully. She did not want to believe the maid but she had to. She g
