“Hello?”
“Hello! Rica? Finally, you picked up! Where are you?"
Rica pulled the phone away from her ears. She didn't feel like talking to anyone. She wanted to be alone in that beautiful place. She needed to figure everything out.
"I've been calling you. George called me but I don’t understand why he wants me to come get you. I thought you were together. What’s going on? Is everything okay between you two?”
"George?" Rica stopped walking. Hearing that name inevitably stabbed her heart. Her body trembled and her legs started to shake with every step.
"Please talk to me, Rica. Please..."
She didn’t know what to tell her best friend. Panting and covered in her own sweat, she sat down under an old weeping willow tree with dancing, ground-sweeping branches providing her a canopy of leaves. As she tried to hide her misery and ignore all the pain, her effort failed, tears started to roll down her red cheeks.
"Hey! Are you crying? What happened? I'm starting to worry," Melanie asked when she heard her soft sobbings.
"Melanie, G-g-george is ... he's gone."
"What do you mean he’s gone? Like gone-gone? Wait.. you mean he broke up with you?"
Rica’s face crumpled and she began to cry in pain.
She invited George to go for a hike. He was her boyfriend for four years. She started to worry about their relationship when he began to avoid her at work and ignore her calls and text messages. She reasoned to herself that he might be too weary and stressed because he had a lot of work to accomplish at their company. In her attempt to save their relationship, she asked him to go hiking which was their favorite activity to do together. He consented, but she had no idea that the day she had been dreading had finally arrived.
"What do you mean this is the end, baby? What happened to 'I will never leave you, Rica'?" she asked George. Her voice cracked and her eyes burned with unshed tears.
He tried to open his lips for words but remained silent. He looked away.
She cupped his face and slowly turned it for their eyes to meet. Her eyes pleaded for his answers. She waited for him to speak but he kept his lips sealed and turned his gaze away away from hers.
“You cheated on me!” she shouted. She helped him reveal the truth. The truth he couldn’t tell her but she knew. She was smart enough to know but stupid enough to think he would never leave her no matter what. That he would soon realize she was the only one capable of loving everything about him, even his many flaws.
George held her hand. "Rica, baby, I'm really sorry. I love you but our relationship is starting to suffocate me."
Like rain, tears fell down her face. Is George really breaking up with her? She closed her eyes. It can’t be! She tried to think of what she could have done to save their relationship but she had done everything already. Then why? Is this really the end?
When she opened her eyes. George was no longer there. He left her.

“Rica? Where are you?” her friend asked worriedly. “I can’t believe that after my long tiring conference, I’ll return home only to find out that my friend is nowhere to be found and I have to look for her instead of going to the SPA or the hair salon. Please have mercy on me. I need my beauty rest too.”
“Nowhere to be found? Hey! I’m not a missing person.” She laughed. She was already used to Mel complaining a lot about things and stuff. “You don’t have to worry about me, Mel. I’m okay. I just, j-just wanted to be alone.”
She heard her friend sighed gently.
“That bastard! Why would he even du..?” She sighed crossly this time. “Look! I don’t know if this would help you feel better but please Rica, just forget him. He’s an asshole anyway. How could he leave you for another girl? You’re far more beautiful, more attractive, more kind-hearted, more loving and all the positive comparative adjectives out there. If I were you, be thankful that you don’t have to be with that kind of guy. What a big cheater!”
Yes! He’s a big cheater indeed! She knew he was cheating on her. She could hear all their colleagues talking behind her back about her boyfriend and her secretary going out on dates. They could be seen dining in fancy restaurants, going to the movies and enjoying flirting inside her office while she was spending her days consumed with meeting madness. Yet, her mind refused to believe and she chose not to listen to them. She chose to trust and listen to her heart. She chose to believe in their relationship. She convinced herself that she had nothing to worry about because George would not just throw everything away.
But she was WRONG!
And she wanted to blame herself for everything.
"Rica? Still there?"
She wiped all her tears away. The branches of the willow tree moved and hugged her. "Yes. I'm still here. Mel, thank you for being there," she answered. "For always being there. I am so blessed to have a friend like you."
“Rica, you’re like a sister to me so you don't have to thank me. Okay? I am and will always be here for you. That’s a promise."
"You're the best!" She smiled gently. "Anyway, you don’t have to worry about me. Just go to the SPA and enjoy yourself. I'll meet you at home."
"Are you sure? No more cryings?" Melanie teased her.
"Not even a single drop of tear!" she answered. "It's going to be hard but I know I can get over him. Time will heal. Soon, I’ll forget him and only the memories will remain."
"That's my girl! You’ll be fine, dear. You’re better off without him. I’ll hang up now. I’ll see you at home. I’ll make dinner so if you can, please get a bottle of wine on your way home.”
“Sure,” she replied.
“Thanks. See you. Bye!"
“Bye!”
She took a deep breath and stood up.
“George…,” she whispered to herself. “I am letting you go now.” She stared at a ring on her finger. It was the ring George gave her when she said yes after being asked to be his girlfriend. She had been wearing it for four years. She couldn’t believe the man who gave it to her chose to give up on her. She stared at the tree. She could remember how her favorite poet, William Shakespeare, used the mournful symbolism of the willow tree in Hamlet. Ophelia and her flowers fell into the gurgling brook. She floated for a while, buoyed up by her clothing but in the end, she sank and drowned.
She would rather drown too than continue living with a stake through her heart. However, that would make George and her new woman happier. She chose to live, of course! She took the ring off her finger and left it by the tree. She buried it, along with her broken heart.
Rica carefully clambered down a big rock. Fortunately, she had hiked this place a year ago so she had a wealth of information about what she needed to do to stay safe in that particular location. She was panting heavily when she reached the bottom so she steadied herself with her hands on her knees for a moment to take a breather. She pulled out a soft white towel on her pocket and wiped her face soaked with sweat. After a short break, she carried on walking down the track when she suddenly noticed a little bird trying to break free from the branches clinging to one of its teeny-weeny legs. She drew herself nearer to it. "What a very beautiful bird!," she exclaimed, astonished by the little creature in front of her. It had bright red feathers and a long wavy red and black tail. Its little eyes were staring at her, pleading for help as it wished to escape from the branches' firm grasp. She at last freed it from them and watched it hurriedly flew away, up in the air, away from her. A
Buzzzzzzz… buzzz… buzzz… Riiiing! Ring! Ring! Rica woke up to the vibration and sound of the alarm clock on her smartphone. She turned it off and slowly opened her eyes. She was about to get up when she realized there was a big man lying on the bed next to her. Quick as lighning, she quickly jumped out of the bed. A naked man! She clamped a hand over her wide-opened mouth. "Shit! Who's this guy?" she gasped as she looked around the room. "Where am I?" she asked, her brow furrowing while examining the unfamiliar bedroom. She tried to think of what could have happened yesterday but she could only remember the time she made a wish in front of the spring. That was her last memory of yesterday. She gave her body a quick glance to check if she was wearing some clothes. "Phew! Thank God I have my clothes on," she muttered to herself. She was certain nothing had happened between her and the stranger man. She tried to wake the man up for answers but his handsome face caught her attention
She ran up to the third floor of the house. She was already running out of breath when she reached the floor. To make matters worse, she was not sure how to find the room she had come from earlier because of the insane size of the house."Where is that room?" she asked to herself, looking confused at the passage. If she had only brought her smartphone, she would have gone straight out of the house earlier to leave this place."All the rooms look the same to me," she sighed."Not to me."Cali suddenly appeared behind her. She could immediately smell his subtle but sexy smell. She turned around and faced him with her eyebrows raised and pulled together."Don't you think kidnapping someone is a.."Cali shut her mouth with his fore finger. "First of all, this is not kidnapping. Don't forget, I am your husband and you are my wife. Second, we have to go downstairs because breakfast has already been served. Food shouldn't wait."
Rica was taken by surprise when Cali took her into his arms from behind. She could feel her heart beating so fast. She swallowed hard and steadied herself. She didn’t expect him to do this. "Please stay even if you don't understand what's going on, Erica," she heard him say in a muted voice. She tried to speak but no words came out of her mouth. She was so surprised she did not notice when Cali ceased to hug her. When she turned to face him, he was already walking out of the room. She let out a deep sigh. Must she stay or must she leave? "I am ready to entrust you my heart. I'll be your woman but..." she paused and closed her eyes. She had to think of how to tell Cali she was not ready to tell the world she was married to him yet. Cali pulled the car over. Good thing they were near a church so it wasn't so noisy. He could hear Rica softly inhaling and exhaling. She was trying to build up the courage she needed to tell him what she wanted. He looked at her intently. "But?" he asked her. He sounded calm. He wanted her to feel comfortable in expressing her thoughts. "Well, you see, there was this guy, George. He was my ex-boyfriend and he dump.. uhm, left me," she began. "The thing is, it was only yesterday when we broke up and I don't think it will be nice for everyone to know I'm married now. They'd think I'm a bitch for dating two men at the same time," she explained in a way she felt Cali would understand. Cali nodded his head. He wanted to s

Rica hugged her best friend. "Mel, I'm really sorry about yesterday. A lot of things have happened so quickly. I'm even marr..." she sighed. "I will explain everything to you later." If there was one person who should know about her secret, it would be Melanie. After a gruesome plane crash took her parents' lives, she became her own family. It wouldn't be fair for her not to know the truth. She was waiting for her friend to react but she seemed disinterested. "I guess she's still upset," she thought to herself. However, for some reason, Melanie was looking at her suspiciously. "Have you heard?" She wanted to ask Rica why she came in late. It was the first time. She was known for being always the early bird in their department. A break up wouldn't be enough reason for her to report late to work. She really wanted to know but there was a more important issue she had to clarify. "Heard of what?" Rica asked, raising her
George stared at the man in awe for a long time. He couldn't believe such kind of man existed in the world. He had to admit he looked exceptionally handsome and was a real stud. "You must be George," the man introduced himself and reached out his hand to him for a shake. "I'm Cali." "Nice to meet you," George answered making an eye contact. He felt something strange when he looked deeper into his eyes. It was like the man was trying to warn him; telling him to stay away. "I don't want to mess with this guy," he thought. "Am glad to meet you, too. I've heard great things about you," said Cali, pulling away his hand after the handshake. Soon after, the two of them were seen strolling around the company. All the ladies did not fail to notice and admire how absolutely gorgeous Cali was. Quickly, he had become the talk of the company. "Have you seen the boss' son?" Melanie asked Rica. I
"I still can't believe you're married now," Julie exclaimed and helped her friend Rica pack up some of her things. She knew it would be lonely and gloomy without her but she couldn't tell her that. "Don't be selfish," she told herself. "It's not like you could keep Rica for the rest of your life." Yet, no matter how much she convinced herself to be happy for Rica, she couldn't understand why she felt betrayed. "I can't believe it myself," Rica chuckled as she watched Julie pull out a big box on the top of her dresser. She stood up to help her bring it down. She opened the old box and looked into it. It had her old necklace, stuffed toy bear and her drawings when she was still a kid. Buried deep under the box, she found some photos. She took them in her hands and stared at them. They were the only photographs of her parents she had. "I miss you so much," she mumbled as she touched her parents' faces. A tear fell from her eye. Julie sat behind Rica and r
"Cali?" she gasped. She finally remembered the name of Mr. Reyes' son. Damn, Rica! She couldn't help but curse herself. How could she forget the only heir and the son of the company's CEO! "Right. His name is Cali!" she gasped again, this time it was louder. Her mind was so busy remembering that she forgot she was surrounded by a number of colleagues in the meeting. Everyone in the room looked up questioningly at her. They were all surprised by her sudden frenzy. When Rica saw all the eyes looking at her and realized what she had done, her face instantly turned as red as a beet. Mr. Reyes started laughing. "Right, Erica," he said, nodding continuously. He rose from his seat and stood up in front of them. "Everyone, I want to introduce the new CEO of Reyes Manufacturing Corporation, my son, Cali Reyes," he said proudly. As soon as Cali stood up to introduce himself, all the women in the room were obviously smitten by his smile and charming looks. Rica gulped. She couldn't believ
