Tommy lunges for my face and bombards me with his mouth. His hands are everywhere and I can feel his erection against my hip. Don’t get me wrong, Tommy gets me hot. I usually end up not minding the things we do, but he is just so damn aggressive. I try to push him off to at least get some air, but he slams my back against the door and pushes his body into me harder. My head slams into the door and I see stars for a second. ********************************** Ryan has had the biggest crush on Carter Moore since her first day of middle school. Now a junior in high school, she not only sees him every day, but sits next to him in Band. Suddenly, Carter asks her out. The two begin dating, but Ryan's past brutality at the hands of her ex-boyfriend, Tommy, threatens to tear them apart, especially with Tommy's sentencing hearing coming up.

Chapter 1

Ryan: What is Happening?

It's third period.  Band.  My most and least favorite class.  Most favorite because, well it’s fun (yes, band geek here).  My least favorite because of Carter Moore.

Carter and I have a love/hate relationship.  I love him, he hates me.  Worst part is that we both play brass instruments (me: trombone, him: baritone) and, because our high school is so small, we sit next to each other.  The smell of his cologne mixes with the music everyday, but the chill temperature from him sometimes requires a winter coat.

Ok, it’s not really that bad.  But it feels that way to someone who has had a crush on the same guy since middle school.

Carter and I are one year apart in school.  I saw him my first day of sixth grade and he has made my heart race since then.  Now he's a senior and I'm a junior, but nothing has changed.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve gone out with other guys, had boyfriends, but Carter has always had some sway over me.

Our rocky relationship started in sixth grade.  My cousin, Jess, is the same age as Carter.  She volunteered to tell him that I like him.  After much agonizing, I let her.  Though he was very sweet to Jess in explaining that he was dating someone, his dickhead friend, Patrick, took it upon himself to make my life miserable.  That went on until my freshman year of high school.

Since then, Carter and I have developed an aquaintance-ship.  It happens when you sit next to each other everyday.  Between Jax (the other trombone player), Carter, and me, we have had several good laughs at the expense of our band director (sorry Mr. Lark!).  We actually have a lot of things in common between TV shows and music.  We aren’t friends, but we do talk.

But I‘m so anxious when I talk to him that I fall back to my default of defensiveness and sarcasm.  Sometimes, I'm a real bitch, but I can’t stop it.  God, I’m an idiot.

--------

As I enter the band room, I walk past Carter and a group of his friends.  He is so freaking hot.  The height of 90s fashion with his short, dark russet hair gelled to the side, a white “A”-shirt under an unbuttoned blue and white checked shirt and JNCO jeans.  He’s tall, 6 feet.  Making him 6 inches taller than me.  Carter is lean, with a muscular build from track and tennis.  His slate gray eyes shine as he laughs at a joke that Patrick (dickhead) made.  I can smell his cologne as I start to pass the group to get to the instrument room.  *Fuuu-uuuck* this guy just did it for me.

“Hey, Ryan,” I hear as I pass by.  I turn to see Carter smiling at me, while his friends watch and giggle.

“Hey, Carter,” I mumble.  I try to smile, but it probably comes off as more of a grimace.  I hurry past, hearing Patrick (dickhead) guffaw.  When I look back, Carter is watching me.  There’s a look on his face.  Disappointment?  Frustration?  What was that?  Probably my imagination.

I walk into the instrument room and see my best friends: Jess (aforementioned cousin), Ayo, and Lucy.  All three play the flute and I see them chatting and putting their instruments together.

“Hey, chica,” Ayo says.  Since that girl started taking Spanish two years ago, the language has peppered her speech.  At first it was weird, but now it was just Ayo.

“Hey, girl,” I call, smiling over my shoulder and head towards my instrument cubby.  I throw in my books, quickly assemble my trombone, and walk over to my friends.

“Hey, guys,” I say.

      “Hey, Ryan,” Jess says.

Lucy does a little finger wave.  “What’s going on?”

“Nothing much,” I say.  “Carter said hi to me when I walked in.”  Just thinking about it makes me blush a deep shade of red and sigh.

“Carter, again?  Tu eres loca,” Ayo says.

“When are you going to ask him out already?” Lucy says.

“I can’t do that!” I shudder at the mere thought.

“Says who?” Jess questions.  “It’s the 90s, baby.  Women’s lib and all that.  You can do whatever you want.  I can even help get the ball rolling.”  She waggles her eyebrows up and down, making Ayo and Lucy laugh.

“Oh, yeah, that worked out so well last time,” I say, drily.

“Girl, that was forever ago.  You’re a junior now and he’s a senior.  Shit has changed,” Jess says.

“The answer is no,” I say.  Just then, the bell rings, signalling the time for us to take our seats.

“Whatever,” Jess says, rolling her eyes.

We all walk out of the instrument room and head to our seats.

-----------

“Alright, alright.  Settle down.  We’ve got some new music to pass out,” Mr. Lark says.

I sit in my seat next to Jax.  “Hey, man."

“Hey, Ryan,” Jax says.  “Good day?”

“Same old, same old,” I say. “You?”

“Ain’t no thang but a chicken wing.”

I laugh.  “Seriously, dude.  Nobody really says that.”

“I do.”  Jax smiles.  “People just haven’t caught up to my awesomeness.”

“Whatever, man,” I laugh again.

Just then, Carter sits down on my other side.

“What’s up?” he says, smiling.

“Hey,” I say, breathily.  I know I sounded like a besotted idiot.  Stupid, stupid, stupid.  Get it together, Ryan.

His smile inches up a little higher and I quickly turn away.  I hear him chuckle beside me as he settles into his seat.   God, just let the ground open up and swallow me whole.

That’s when Jaime Collier walks up with sheet music for our row.

Let me take a moment to talk about Jaime Collier.  She looks like a more voluptuous Katie Holmes from Dawson’s Creek.  Her dark, wavy, chestnut hair reaches to just below her shoulders and her skin is flawless.  Seriously, what teenager has skin that looks that amazing?  Jaime Collier, that’s who.  I never talk to her.  Jaime is too popular, too untouchable.  Oh, and the kicker is that she was the girl that  Carter was dating back in sixth grade and has been his best friend ever since they broke up.  Uuuugggghhh.

“Hey, Carter.  Hey, Ryan.” Jaime calls as she sets down the sheet music to sort it out.

Me?  Jaime Collier just spoke to me?  Heh?

“Hey, Jaime,” Carter says.

“Uuuhh, hi,” I say, definitely puzzled.  I look over to Jax for some back up, but he is talking to someone down the row.  Looks like I’m on my own here.

“How’s it going, Ryan?”  Jaime says, smiling brightly at me.  Carter turns in my direction with an interested look on his face.  Ok, what’s going on?

Suspiciously, I answer, “Fine.  How are you?”

“Great,” Jaime says, smiling brightly.  She looks towards Carter and he gives her a small nod.  Jaime turns back to me.  “So, hey, some of us are going to the diner today after school.  Wanna come?”

Absolutely loved this story! It was very emotional but gave an honest look at what trauma does to a person & the people around them. Loved how her boyfriend supported her in every way.

No surprise really, another amazing story from this author! Sadly Ryan's story is relatable to many. Sure to different levels&degrees, but still. Carter is a sweetheart&true gentleman. I'm excited to see how he's going to help Ryan, how their relationship will be developing throughout all ups&downs!

Ryan: Total Shock
Jaime looks towards Carter and he gives her a small nod.  She turns back to me.  “So, hey, some of us are going to the diner today after school.  Wanna come?” “Me?” I say, incredulously and pointing a finger at my chest. “Yeah, you,” Carter says, his smile nearly taking my breath away. I look quickly between the two of them.  What the hell is happening?  “I, um, I have a piano lesson right after school,” I say. “Oh,” Carter says, his smile toning down in wattage.

Carter: Soundproof Room
I follow Ryan into one of the soundproof rooms, watching the way that she pushes her hair over her left shoulder.  I wish I could run my fingers through it.  I love how her thick, coppery hair frames her face and trails down her back.  It didn’t help that it stopped right above her ass.  And those shorts were doing nothing to hide her curves.  Combine that with the low-cut green t-shirt that ended just shy of her shorts and I would have followed her anywhere.  I kept getting tantalizing glimpses of the dimples on her lower back.  I had to consciously keep my hands by my side to keep from touching her. Ryan walks into the soundproof room and leans her ass against a table on the far back wall.  I walk in and close the door behind me.  Trying to keep the excitement out of my voice, I say, “What’s up?”

Ryan: The Call
I rush home from my appointment, stopping at what my girls and I affectionately labeled Taco Hell to grab something to eat.  I get home just before 7:00 and rush through my homework.  I sit in my room, next to the phone.  Of course, I just gulped down a large Pepsi and am super nervous, so I have to pee.  Just as I’m washing my hands, I hear the phone ring.  I try to rush out of the bathroom, but my little brother is screaming, “I got it!  I got it!” NOOOOOOO!!!! “Hello,” his little middle school voice squeaks.  I try to run to the phone, but don’t get there in time.  “Ryan!” he screams.  “It’s for you!  It’s a booo-oooy!”

Carter: His Turn
I hear Ryan take a deep breath and sit up.  I’m trying hard not to think of her laying on her bed while I talk to her.  It will not help me focus on the conversation. “Go for it,” Ryan says. “Ok, question 1: Why do you like me?” I smile knowing that I'm throwing her question back at her. “Jugular, huh?” she says, wryly. “Yup,” I reply, smiling wider. “Well, you know that I’ve liked you for a while.  I was initially attracted to your looks.”

Carter: Aftermath
Ryan is quiet on the other end of the phone, breathing heavily.  I sit in shock.  I look to see wet spots on my jeans and lift a hand to feel that my cheeks are wet.  I’d had no idea I was crying. Ryan takes a breath on the other end, getting ready to speak.  I quickly wipe my cheeks, attempting to get myself back together.  If she can talk about this, I sure as hell can listen. “The next morning, Chris found us in his bed.  I was battered, my face a mass of bruises.  I had bite marks...everywhere.  There was blood on me.  And the bed,” Ryan says quietly.   For as much as I want to hold Ryan, to comfort her, I want to beat the

Carter: A Hug
Once Ryan heads upstairs, I stand up from the table and readjust my pants.  My plan was to hug her the second I saw her, enveloping her in my arms and the warm scent of coffee and baked goods.  However, when she opened the door with her pajamas still on, I got a little unfocused. Her short shorts and tank top left very little of her curves to the imagination and I could tell that she wasn’t wearing a bra.  I doubt that she knew how she looked or she never would have answered the door that way.   But after the story she told me last night, I couldn’t hug her for the first time with a raging boner.  So, tuck and cover it was.  Just something for me to think about later...

Carter: Official
We didn’t really talk on the way to school.  But it wasn’t uncomfortable.  I hear Ryan singing quietly to the music.  She isn’t going to win any singing awards, but it's sweet. Eventually, we pull into the parking lot.  Ryan tries to let go of my hand, but I hold fast.   She turns to look at me.  “What’s up?’ “Let me take your bag.” I grab it from the floor. “Oh, thanks,” I smile at her and bring her hand to my lips.  I graze her

Ryan: Episode
I walk into second period English to have Ayo and Lucy wave me over to the seat they saved for me.  Lucy hugs me, bouncing on her toes. “I’m so happy for you!” she squeals. “Thanks,” I giggle.  I hold her shoulders down.  “Stop vibrating, will you?” “Come on, Ryan, this is HUGE!  This guy is basically all you’ve talked about since sixth grade!” Lucy says, swatting my arm. “Ouch!  Can I at least sit before you mortally wound me?” I smile at her.

Ryan: PTSD
“Ryan?  Are you ok?”I snap back to reality with Ms. Snow kneeling beside me.  Ayo and Lucy are also crowded around my chair. For a second I don’t recognize where I am.  I dimly register that I am hugging myself, shaking and crying.  The thoughts of the trial had swept me away, completely overtaking my thoughts.“Would you like to go to Mrs. Lewdwig?” Ms. Snow's voice is quiet, but the room is, too.  I know that everyone is listening, watching, judging.I nod.  All my teachers know the situation and a plan is in place for me to leave class if I need.“Ok.”  She pats my hand.  I flinch and shrink into myself.  She immediately pulls away.  “Ayo.  Lucy.  Can you take
