North Dakota, 2009
Brown leaves covered the ground from past years. The leaves on the trees were green as spring turned into summer. Lost once again he wandered in the woods. His uncle told him not to wander far in fear this would happen. Again. Caleb tried to remember how long he had been walking. He had been thinking of his parents again and lost track of time, and he wasn’t watching where he was going either. He was thinking about the accident that claimed both his mother and his father’s lives. He remembered everything that happened that night and the last words they said to him.
It was only two weeks into the summer and his parents thought he was hanging out with the wrong kind of people. They were afraid that he was going to get in trouble or get hurt. They had a fight and his father told him, “We are sending you to stay with your uncle for a few months. You need to get out of the city and get some fresh air. We know you don’t want to go but it will do you some good.” They were right, he didn’t want to go, and he let it show. He yelled at them, threw stuff and broke a lot of things. He finally agreed, but only because of his mother. The look on her face as he tried to defy them was like taking a walloping hit straight into his gut. The whole way to his uncle’s he had been thinking about his friends and the plans they had made for that summer, about the girl he had planned on asking out. He smiled at the thought of her. A week after he got to his uncle’s is when they got the call; his parents had gone out to their weekly dinner and movie when on the way home they were waiting at the railroad tracks when a train derailed and hit four cars waiting to cross the tracks. His parent’s car was right in front of the tracks and the train hit them first. The cars exploded and there wasn’t much left of anything.
Knock it off Caleb, he told himself, stop thinking of the past and try to figure out how to get back into town. He wiped the tears off his face, he didn’t even realize that he had been crying. He has done a lot of that. He stopped and looked around to see where he was and realized that he had never been in this part of the woods before as it didn’t look familiar. He was always walking in the woods just to be alone and think. Almost every time he gets lost and either his uncle or one of his cousins comes to find him. But in the past few weeks he started learning the woods and has been able to get back on his own. He kept going in the direction he thought he had come, that’s when he saw them, three girls, so beautiful, each just as pale as the other.
One with long blonde hair that went straight down her back, she was wearing pants and a dark green tank top that clung to the top of her body, the other girl had dark hair that curled down hers. She wore a light blue sundress that was tight around her breasts and belly and flared out around her waist down to her knees. The third had shorter blonde hair that rested just below her shoulders. She wore a pale-yellow shirt that had short sleeves and was wore loose around her belly and cut low to show the swell of her breast and a pair of white shorts that you could barely see under the shirt.
They were absolutely stunning. But the dark-haired girl was the one that captured Caleb’s attention. I must be getting close back to town, he thought. He looked up at the sky and seen the sun overhead. He started to ask the girls which way back to town but when he looked back, they were gone.
Odd, he thought, where did they go? He kept walking ahead thinking that he would come to a road somewhere, but the woods were getting thicker and started to get darker. This isn’t the right way, he thought, but he really didn’t know which way was the right way, so he turned around to head back in the other direction. He thought he heard a twig snap and when he looked back, he couldn’t see anything. His heart was racing, he had a bad feeling and was starting to get worried. He picked up his pace, he heard footsteps and he started to run. He went from worried to scared. Out of the corner of his eye he saw dark green and turned to look but didn’t see anything. This is getting really weird he thought and he kept running. Still hearing someone behind him, he readied to turn around and see what was chasing him. He turned and saw nothing, heard no footsteps. He looked around to see where he was and noticed the woods had thinned out and it was brighter. He continued to walk in the same direction and started to notice some things that were familiar to him. Finally, he came to the path that led him out of the woods and into the backyard of his uncle’s house.
“Well, there you are. We were about to send a search party in after you.”
“Sorry Aunt Lara.” he told her. She had been so welcoming to him since he has been there. She was the one that told him after his parents died that he could live there with them. He hadn’t expected that, and he didn’t know where he would’ve ended up if she hadn’t offered him a place here. It hasn’t been so bad either. “It’s quite alright. I knew you would come out sooner or later. You must be getting hungry. You have been gone for hours.”
“I went farther in than I have before,” he told her, “I didn’t recognize anything, the trees were thick and it was dark. I thought maybe I was coming close to town when I saw three girls, so I followed them. But then it started to get dark and I had to turn around.”
“Three girls?” she asked with a concerned look on her face.
“Yeah, I thought I saw them, but I looked up at the sky and when I looked back, they were gone, I tried to follow them but I couldn’t figure out which way they went.”
“You were probably just imagining things dear, hunger does that to you. Come inside and I will fix you something to eat.” He followed her inside and made himself something to drink. She made him a sandwich and walked out of the room to let him eat.
Lara went outside to find her husband. He was in his shed working on his latest project, a chest for their youngest daughter. He looked up when she walked in, “Caleb is in the kitchen eating a sandwich,” she told him.
“I guess we don’t have to send Andrew and Colin out to find him again.”
“No not this time. I’m worried about him William, he keeps to himself most of the time and even when he doesn’t it seems he is off in a different place.”
“He is still grieving dear, give him some time. He will come around and he will be fine.”
“I’m not so sure. It’s been almost six months.” And six months he has been living with us, she thought, and he only speaks when someone speaks to him first. “He spends so much time either in his room or getting lost in the woods. He was out there so long today without food he started to let his imagination run away with him and having delusions. He ended up all the way into the old part of the woods.”
“The old woods? How can you be certain?” he asked.
“He said that he went farther than he had before and the trees were thicker and there was no sun shining through.”
“That would be the old woods alright. It’s a good thing he didn’t get lost in that part. We wouldn’t have thought to go that far to look for him. Could’ve taken us days to find him. Wait, what do you mean delusions?” he gives her a puzzling look.
“He said he saw three girls and he tried to follow them. That is how he ended up in the old woods.”
William shrugged his shoulders “delusions” was all he said before he returned to work on the chest.
“Don’t you think that is a little strange to be having delusions of girls in the woods?” she said, but he didn’t say anything. Lara watched her husband for a moment and then turned and walked out of the room.
Alaina walked in the house and met the glare of her sister. She had stopped her sister from hunting the human, he was lost. She had been watching him for a while and he hadn’t even been watching where he was going. He looked like he was thinking about something painful, something that had hurt him deeply. Then she had seen the tears falling out of his eyes and she felt heart-wrenching sympathy for him. He looked young—17 maybe 18—and Abigail was hungry. They had been out hunting and hadn’t come across anything until they heard him approach. He had seen them, looked right at them and walked right towards them. He had a beautiful face but even from the distance she could see the sorrow in his eyes.
She felt something that she couldn’t explain, some kind of connection to him, so she stopped Abigail from hunting him. He had looked right at her. Her. And when he did, he became hers. She didn’t know what it was but she just knew she had to protect him. Even if it did cost her sister being very angry with her. She would understand, Alaina hoped anyway.
“Why the hell did you do that?!?!” Abigail screamed at her. “There was nothing else to hunt and I’m thirsty! None of us has had anything in almost three weeks, we are weak and we need blood! What were you thinking?”
“I felt sorry for him Abby, you didn’t see the sorrow in his eyes like I did. Damn it he is so young, even you never hunted so young.”
“Right now, I really don’t care.” Abigail shouted.
“You don’t now, but once it’s done you will regret it. I know you better than this, you are angry with me now but only cause your thirsty. Calm down, we will find something soon.”
“No, you will find something. You stopped the kill so now it’s up to you. I don’t care what you get, but get something. Don’t come back until you do.”
“Fine, I will return shortly.” Alaina turned and walked out of the room and left Abigail sitting in the living room. Arianna came downstairs as she was about to walk out the door.
“Laina, please be careful.”
“Don’t worry Ari, I shouldn’t be gone too long. I’ll have to go a little farther than we usually go, but I will hurry.”
“Do you want me to go with you? Together we will find something quicker.”
“No, you stay here with Abigail. She is weak and upset. Stay with her and keep her company.”
“Ok, hurry back.” And with that Alaina turned and walked out of the house. It was a beautiful day, the sun was shining bright and you could hear the birds in the distance. It wouldn’t take her long to cover the distance between her and the birds, but they need something a little more satisfying. Birds just wouldn’t cut it. They needed something bigger and with more blood. They didn’t usually hunt humans because they don’t want a lot of unwanted attention of people coming up missing and search parties for searching them. So, they mainly just hunted animals, but the animals knew they were being hunted and picked off one by one in that part of the woods, so the animals avoided that part.
It’s almost time to move to a different place, she thought, whether Abigail wants to admit it or not. This was very close to being Abigail’s favorite place to live and hers too. Only one other place topped this one for her, two for Abigail. Alaina ran for a few miles away from the house before she stopped. She still couldn’t smell anything appetizing to hunt, so she ran just another couple of miles. She was just about to give up when it came suddenly—the movement in the corner of her eye, the smell, the sound. The bear stood tall, taller than her, but she was faster and stronger. She could hear its heartbeat and she could all but taste its blood already. It swiped out its claw at her and she jumped and turned to land on its back. Before the bear knew what was happening, she snapped its neck. She listened to the heartbeat slow and then stop.
It was heavy, but with her strength it didn’t weigh her down at all. All she could smell was the bear’s blood and all she could think about was the anticipation of getting to feed. The house came into view and when she walked in, she could feel something was deeply wrong.
“Abigail? Arianna?” she called out. She couldn’t sense them anywhere in the house. She started to get a really bad feeling. She put the bear down and closed her eyes, she had to concentrate, she had to find her sisters. The tingling started in her belly worked its way up to where her heart was. She felt the pull that told her which direction her sisters were in. Except this time, it was pulling in two different directions. Arianna was pretty close but Abigail was a good distance away and getting further.
They aren’t together, oh no, something is wrong.
She took off out the door and went in the direction of Arianna. She was closer emotionally to Arianna then she was to Abigail because there was a big age difference between them than there was with Arianna and herself, but she still loved Abigail as much. But still she went to find Arianna first. She was sitting on the ground and was sobbing, she looked up when she heard Alaina approach.
“She left us Laina, she said she needs to be alone for a while.”
Alaina sat down next to her and put her arm around her sister. “I knew she was upset, but I didn’t think she was that upset.”
“She calmed down a little after you left, but she wasn’t right though. She wanted to get away from here and everyone.” They sat in silence, the only sound was the sobbing that was coming from Arianna. A million questions raced through Alaina’s mind. Why would she leave? Did she not love them? Were they ever going to see her again?
“She needs her own life for a while, I guess. It’s not like we will never see her again. Cheer up, I have us food.”
“I miss her already.” Arianna looked up at her sister and wiped the tears out of her eyes.
“I know. I miss her too, we will see her soon enough. When one has eternity, a few years don’t matter much.” She hoped she was right. “Was she still mad at me when she left?”
“No. She told me to tell you that she forgives you and that you were right, she would have regretted it afterwards and to tell you that she loves you and she was sorry for the way she treated you.”
Alaina stood up and held out a hand for her sister. Arianna took it and together the two sisters ran back to the house and fed on the bear. Satisfied they drained the bear of the rest of its blood and stored it in the fridge and disposed of the body. After the work was done Alaina went up to her room and laid down in her bed, questions still running through her mind, but she wouldn’t say anything to Arianna. She had finally stopped crying and she didn’t want to upset her again.
Downstairs Arianna went into the library and got her favorite book off the shelf and sat in her favorite chair and trying to get her mind off Abigail leaving, she read. She knew why she had left, but she didn’t want to admit it, and she wasn’t going to tell Alaina. Alaina was trying so hard not to blame herself, Arianna knew that she would, so she didn’t want to tell her. Shaking her head, she told herself to stop thinking and concentrated on the words of her book.
Caleb sat at the table and ate his sandwich. His mind wandered to the girls he saw in the woods. They were so beautiful, especially the dark-haired girl. He couldn’t stop thinking of her. That long, wavy, dark brown hair, that fell down to her lower back, the paleness of her skin. And the swell of her breasts against the blue dress which complemented her in so many ways. “Where were you at?” Caleb jumped. “Hey Drew. Didn’t hear you come in.” Drew laughed “Man, you looked like you were day dreaming a little there.” “A little bit. Got lost again and I guess I was deprived of food too long and started seeing beautiful girls.” “Five minutes of not eating is depriving you of food, you eat like a horse.” Caleb just laughed. “Speaking of getting lost,” Drew threw something at Caleb. “What is this?” Caleb asked. “It’s a compass. When you decide to take another hike in the woods, keep an eye on the needle and it will tell you which way you are going. When you decide to come b
Abigail ran as fast as she could through the woods, away from the house and away from her sisters. She loved them very much but she was tired of being weighed down by them. She felt bad for feeling that way about them, it wasn’t their fault. But she couldn’t help the way she felt. It was past time to be alone for a while. She thought about going back to the house they have in Scotland, or maybe Ireland. She only brought a small duffle bag with a few clothes. She didn’t have to bring much because all of their houses had clothes and everything they needed. All she needed was her passport, ID, and some cash, all which she had in her purse. She changed her clothes before she left, she didn’t want to attract any unnecessary attention. She had changed her shirt and left on her jeans and put on a dark blue sweater. She thought about when they had been changed, it was the 16th century. She could remember that fateful night so clearly, she had gone to take a walk and of course that was a bad
“Get up!!!” Drew barged into Caleb’s room, “Man you have been asleep for over an hour.” Mom said not to wake him but Drew wasn’t going to let Caleb miss dinner. Caleb didn’t even open his eyes “Shut up and go the hell away.” “Okay then” and with that Drew sat on Caleb’s bed and right on top of him. Caleb groaned and tried to get up but Drew was too heavy. “Get your ass off of me and I might be able to get up” he told Drew. Drew just laughed but got off his cousin. He didn’t need to sleep so late anyway, he might miss dinner. Caleb sat up and punched his cousin in the arm, Drew laughed again and stood up, “What is so important that you had to come in here, sit on me and wake me up?” Caleb asked him. Drew gave him a lopsided grin “Dinner.” “I’m up,” he said “I’ll be downstairs in a minute, I just need to wash up.” As Drew left the room and went downstairs Caleb thought about the dream that he was having. It was about the girls that he seen in the woods, he had wondered who th
Alaina woke up and stared at the beige wall that made up her room, she got up and walked over to her window. She had dreamed for the first time in a very long time. She was thinking about the boy, that face and those sorrow filled eyes. She had saved him because she felt sorry for him, now she couldn’t stop thinking about him. Something about his eyes, she thought. She decided sitting here wasn’t going to help get him off her mind. So she decided to go take a run. She loved to run, it helped clear her mind. She passed by the library on her way out and noticed that Arianna was sleeping in the chair. She looked so peaceful she didn’t want to wake her up. She wrote her a note to tell her that she would be back soon and not to worry. She stepped out onto the porch and looked out at the woods.
Scotland 2020 It was another one of those days where all it did was rain. The clouds hung low and dark and promised nothing other than more rain, maybe even a little bit of snow. She would like some snow, Arianna thought to herself. It would be a nice change to the rain. She stared out of her bedroom window, for miles and miles all there was to see was trees and hills. And rain. Frustrated she spun out of her room and down the stairs. She could hear the tv on in the living room. Alaina had to be just as bored as she was. Maybe enough to leave and find another place to live for a while, she was ready to go back to the states. She loved living there and the only reason she left was because Alaina came back from a run one day and was upset saying they needed to leave. She hadn’t tried to argue with her because ever since their older sister had left them there, it just didn’t seem the same. Truth to be told she had been ready to leave as well, she just didn’t want to say anything. A
“Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Caleb, happy birthday to you!” His family came into the room with a very large and very unnecessary cake. Caleb sat in the living room trying to catch up on the work the chief of staff had given him for the conference he was going to in Los Angeles. He was a third-year resident at the community’s hospital. He had worked his ass off in college to finish early so he could apply to med school at Yale. And it paid off. He would only be a second year now if he hadn’t.Going to the conference along with him was one other resident and two attendings and they will be gone for a week. This
Alaina was looking out of the hotel window, they have been in New York for only a few days. Neither one of them had spoken or even been out of the room. She was thinking about everything that happened, she almost of understood what Abigail had done. Almost. It was at that point of time that was her favorite time of the day, when the sun was barely in the sky. Pinks, reds, and oranges colored the sky and the clouds. It was at this time when she could think most clearly. She knows that her sister didn’t leave with the intention to be with someone else. And if that had been the case, she would have told them. Perhaps they were too harsh with her. No, over a decade goes by without so much as a phone call or text message. She told herself. And the whole time she has been with him. She moved away from the window and paced back and forth. She might not have intended it, but she could’ve at least made some kind of contact with them the past few years. It’s true that time moves more slowly fo
The next morning, they went out to find a realtor and look for a house. To their disappointment, they didn’t find anything that would suit them. After a few weeks of house hunting, they finally found a house on the beach near Deer Creek Beach. Which was also in the state park. It was perfect for them, although they couldn’t move in right away, they had to wait for the current owners to move out. Finally, after two weeks they got the call that the owners were moved and they could come pick up the keys and start moving in. Leaving the realtors office, keys in hand, they couldn’t be happier. Now they had to go buy furniture to fill their new house, and shopping just made them even happier. After making arrangements to have everything delivered and set up for them, they went back to the hotel to get their stuff and check out. Before they left Santa Monica, they decided to celebrate by going surfing. They had been so busy trying to find a house they hadn’t had the chance to hit the wate
Abigail and Nicholas stepped of the plane in Los Angeles and got a car. She put the address that Alaina sent her into the GPS and headed to the house. She was glad that Alaina was getting Arianna out of Devils Lake but she wasn’t happy that Alaina was going back. But Alaina needed to handle this situation, and if Alaina couldn’t, she would. She won’t take any chances when it came to her sisters. She didn’t want Alaina to go back alone, and her and Nicholas had talked about him staying with Arianna while Abigail goes back with Alaina. That was the only way she could make sure the situation would be taken care of. Nicholas wasn’t happy about it, but he finally gave in and agreed. They pulled up to the house and found that Alaina and Arianna were already there. Nicholas got their bags out of the trunk and followed Abigail in the house. Her sisters were waiting at the door to wrap her in a hug, all of them crying. Abigail hoped to never go this long without seeing her sisters again. Sh
“What the fuck?” Alaina was practically yelling at this point. As soon as she got back to the hotel room Arianna had showed her a picture of the amulet she had found. It was hanging around the neck of the witch that had killed their mother. They knew that witch wasn’t still alive. Alaina and Hannah had seen to that. After she had killed their mother, she disappeared for years. Then one night, while Alaina was visiting Hannah and her new daughter, Sybil tried to attack Hannah, and if Alaina hadn’t of been there, she may have succeeded. But Alaina was there, and her and Hannah killed her. Sybil couldn’t have been the one to give that amulet to Caleb, but it could have been one of her descendants. They weren’t even sure she even had any. But if it wasn’t, then it could have been a friend of Sybil’s looking for revenge. Either way, they had to get that amulet away from Caleb. It was sure to hold a lot of dark magic, since Sybil was one of the biggest practitioners and held the most power
“Arianna, look at this!” Alaina yelled suddenly, making Arianna jump. “What? Oh my.” Arianna said looking at Alaina’s computer screen. Alaina had managed to track down her mother’s friends last living relative. She couldn’t believe it. It was Caleb. “So, Caleb is Hannah’s so many greats grandson.” Arianna said. “Looks that way.” Alaina said. “I wonder if he knows.” “I don’t know. For a split second after that amulet knocked you on your ass, surprised crossed his face. I don’t think he knew what kind of power it held.” Arianna said to her. “I wonder if the power came from the amulet, or if it came from him.” “Could be a little of both. The amulet could have magnified his own powers, powers that look like they are just starting to manifest themselves.” Arianna said. “Have you found anything out about that amulet yet?” Alaina asked. “No, not yet. But now that I know that Caleb is from Hannah’s line, I have a better place to look.” “Ok, keep looking. I’m going to go to Caleb’s an
Alaina walked into the hotel room, Arianna meeting her at the door. “Were you able to get a look at it?” Arianna asked. “No, I never got the chance. He took me down to the lake. While we were there, he got a message and said he had to go to the hospital. As soon as we got back to his house he went inside and shut the door on me.” Alaina said. “We need to get a look at that amulet. There are too many, from too many different families, that can hold that kind of power. I can’t narrow it down without seeing what it looks like.” she told Alaina. “I will go back and watch for him to get home. After he falls asleep, I will sneak in and find it.” said Alaina. “You will have to be quick. Any ideas where he would keep it?” Arianna asked. “Something tells me he is still wearing it around his neck.” Alaina said and a low growl escaped her. “Really?” Arianna asked. “Yes.” Alaina said. “I need something dark to wear.” she was digging through her back and pulled out a pair of black pants, b
Alaina felt something was off with Caleb, but she just couldn’t put her finger on it. He was giving her a chance to make things right, but there was something nagging at her, telling her something wasn’t right. But she pushed those thoughts to the back of her mind and tried to forget about them. She was just happy that Caleb was at least giving her a chance. He hadn’t forgiven her yet, that much she could see in his eyes, but he was letting her be there, letting her try. Arianna had stayed in the hotel room, she had been trying to see what she could find on that amulet. She had even called Abigail and told her about it as well. They were all concerned about how Caleb came about it. It seemed too much of a coincidence that he just came across it at a sale. Someone wanted him to have it, to use it against them. Caleb didn’t even know what it was, what kind of power it held. But they did. Their mother had been a witch, and even though Alaina was the only one born that possessed her mo
Alaina and Arianna got off the plane in Devils Lake and got a rental car. They decided to get a hotel room first before they went to Caleb’s. “Are you sure I should go to Caleb’s with you? Maybe I should just stay at the hotel.” Arianna asked. “Yes, I am sure. I need you there for moral support.” Alaina said and they both laughed. They got their bags out of the car and went inside the hotel. After they got into their room and put their stuff away, Alaina changed her clothes. And then changed her clothes again. She was nervous and procrastinating. “Stop fidgeting, you look great.” Arianna told her. “I’m nervous, and if I am being honest, I’m scared.” Alaina said. “I know. But don’t worry, I will be right there with you.” Alaina sighed. “Alright, let’s go.” Alaina and Arianna got out of the car and walked towards the house that Alaina got the address for. Alaina took a deep breath and knocked on the door. They waited but nobody came to the door. “Looks like he isn’t ho
Caleb woke up the next morning and he thought for sure that his head was about to split open. He fumbled his way to his bathroom and found some ibuprofen. He turned on the water in the sink and threw a handful of ibuprofen into his mouth and stuck his head down to the faucet and got a mouthful of water and swallowed the pills. He turned off the water and went over to the toilet to relieve himself, trying not to throw up in the process. He washed his hands and went back into the bedroom. He realized that he had left his sliding glass door open. He walked over to the door and was about to close it when he seen the bottle of whiskey still sitting on the outside table. The hell with it, he thought to himself. He picked it up and took a big drink. He shut the door and walked over to his bed and picked up his phone, it was still off. He powered it back on and as soon as it powered up, it started chiming with message after message. Most of them were from Alaina, a few were from Drew and Lar
Caleb climbed off the plane, anger seething through his whole body. He walked through the terminal to baggage claim. He waited until finally baggage started to come through. Getting his bags, he made his way out of the airport and to his truck. He spent the whole plane ride searching for whatever information he could on vampires. He already knew some of what he read were myths based on what Alaina had already told him. But what he needed to know, was how to kill them. He found several different methods, but there was no way of knowing which ones were myths and which ones were true. He couldn’t very well try it out on one. Unless, he thought to himself, he could find a way to weaken one enough to keep it captive until he could figure out how to kill it. The only way he knew how to weaken a vampire was to not let it feed. He was pretty sure that garlic and crosses were myths. Hell, all of this wasn’t going to matter if he couldn’t even find one. He wondered if there were any vampire
Abigail woke up the next morning and checked her phone to see what time it was. She couldn’t believe what she saw. She sat there just staring at her phone, until Nicholas walked in. “Love, what’s wrong?” he asked. “Nothing is wrong, I just checked my phone to see what time it was, and I have a missed call and a message from Alaina.” she said. “I’m just shocked, I can’t believe she called.” “Is everything ok?” “I guess so. Her message just says to call her when I get a chance, she just wants to talk.” Abigail told him. Nicholas smiled. “Call her.” “I will.” She said, still sitting on the bed staring at her phone. She still couldn’t believe it. She figured Arianna would be the first one to reach out. She never thought it would have been Alaina. She dialed Alaina’s number, after a few rings she answered. Abigail listened to her sister break down in tears as she told her what had happened with a human and how Arianna wouldn’t speak to her because of it. Abigail’s heart broke fo
