KANE

Ever since he had returned to the pack house the day before after training with Josh, Kane had been unable to leave his office .

He had worked all day and through the night and only gotten through a half of what needed to be done now .

Kane was positive that if he had to go through another file filled with complaints , he would break his work table in half so , he left his office briefly for a break .

He walked down the stairs of the pack house hoping to not encounter anyone .

His mum had wanted him to move into the pack house to help his transition to Alpha while his parents had moved into his own house that was located farther away from the pack , quite close to the border. 

The closeness to the border made Kane anxious , he had not been anxious when he lived there and his parents complained daily .

But now that only his parents lived there , Kane was constantly worried .

He stepped out of the Packs house and headed to the house by the border. 

The moon was high in the sky , a crescent moon.

He said a quick prayer to the moon goddess asking for guidance .

He smelled some people walking around , he recognized their scents as the Packs scouts , they were always awake and about .

" Are you coming here ? ", his mum suddenly mind linked .

" Yeah , I'm almost there ", he replied .

His mum was famous for her strong wolf senses , he was in no way close to the house yet she had known he was coming.

Whenever he asked her how she knew things like that , she always said even she did not know.

He reached the house and could make out a slight outline of his mum outside .

He narrowed his eyes and sped up .

" Ma , I told you to not take late night walks now that you're so close to the border ", he scolded as soon as he reached his mum .

She was wearing an ivory silk robe and a matching cotton shawl was draped around her shoulders .

Her blonde hair was wrapped up in a style that Kane did not care to know about .

His mum hissed .

" Yes , I distinctly remember you ordering your father and I to stay exactly where you kept us ", his mum retorted .

Kane sighed .

" I didn't mean for it to sound like an order to  you guys ", he said .

His mum tsked , shaking her head .

" And I wasn't taking a walk either ,I came out to wait for you , your father and I have been too busy to take walks ", She sighed dreamily as she admitted to this .

Kane grimaced .

" I really did not want to hear that ", he told his mum .

She chuckled and grabbed his arms .

" Come on , I'm making hot chocolate ".

She pulled Kane behind her as they went up the porch and into the house .

Kane turned around when they were in to lock the doors and his mum burst into laughter .

" We are wolves honey , a lock is not going to save us if we get attacked ".

Kane ignored her and proceeded to arm the security system .

" Is he at it again ? " , he heard his dad ask .

He turned around just in time to catch his parents make a sign at each other and burst into more laughter .

His father was wearing a matching robe that had been very loosely tied .

" Hey Pops " .

His dad walked down the rest of the short stair case and put him in a headlock .

" I've missed you son ", he yelled while his mum laughed like that was the funniest thing she had ever seen .

Kane let his dad have his fun for a few seconds before he finally used his elbow to punch his father in his side, his father let him go immediately .

" Uh oh , I'll go get the chocolate ", His mum said and ran off .

" That was a weak ass punch ", His dad told him .

" Yeah , yeah . I heard you inhale ", Kane jeered .

" Why are you so angry on this fine night ? ", his dad asked.

His mum stuck her head out of the kitchen .

" I'm also curious. Peter make him talk ", she yelled encouragingly .

" Dad , did you ever do any paperwork ? ", He yelled , stomping his feet to show just how frustrated he was .

" The office is full of paperwork that dates almost as far as January and this is the first week of december ", Kane ranted .

His dad wouldn't meet his eye and kept looking around the living room.

" You know I never really liked paperwork ", he said weakly .

" Still , it was part of your job. It was your responsibility , you ....", Kane was cut off by his mum who had slapped him on the head , very hard .

" Mum !!! ", he called out .

" Don't you dare speak to your father about responsibility ", his mum warned .

Kane sighed , it was true .

His father had not been big on written reports and complaints but everyone this side of America called him the best Alpha they had seen for generations .

He had singlehandedly established and increased their territory into three times what it used to be .

He had still managed to maintain a peaceful relationship with the other Packs which was something other Alphas found difficult to do.

His father had even made so many human friends and connections that their Pack was by far the wealthiest Pack.

All this was scary to Kane , he did not want to be a shadow of all that his father had done , he needed to be better .

" I'm sorry ", his father apologized .

" I knew you were going to become Alpha this year and it just became increasingly harder to do anything at the office since I knew you were coming to take care of it. If it's any compensation,my father left me an even bigger mess when I became Alpha ".

Kane smiled .

" No dad , that's definitely not compensation ".

His mum clapped .

" Isn't this nice ? Making up as soon as you break up ".

She held out their cups of chocolate to them.

" Speaking of break ups, Reno and Alex are official now. Olivia told me that Reno actually agreed easier than they had anticipated. According to her , Reno said , Marrying Herrera junior will make me Alpha so why not ? ", His mum added .

Olivia was Reno's mother , the female Alpha of Fortnight .

Their mothers had been college roommates and best friends , still were .

Kane scoffed loudly .

" She's going to marry that piece of shit because she'll be Alpha ? That's low , even for Reno ".

His mum slapped his head again .

" She could be Alpha if she wanted to , she acts more like an Alpha than her brother ", Kane said .

His father smiled softly .

" Yes, she could be Alpha if she wanted to be . Her father could give it to her or she could fight for it but you don't know how wolves think . If they hear that a pack is led by a female , every idiot will be breaking into their territory to challenge her , Other packs will be constantly requesting for war in an attempt to take over their land , it will be a bloodbath ".

" Fucking sexist bastards ", his mum cussed .

Kane glowered , it was really a shame how the world operated .

Someone like Reno would have made a fierce Alpha .

" And she's an ambitious girl, she'll take the marriage if it'll make her an Alpha ", his mum added .

" No one cares about actual mates anymore ", his mum sighed as she held his father's hands .

It was true , no one really looked for or waited for their actual mates .

" This is all quite stupid ", Kane expressed .

" Shouldn't you be happy? You hate Juan's kids " , his father mentioned .

His mum slapped his father's head yet again .

Kane frowned .

He hated them but that did not mean that he wanted Reno marrying someone like Alex Herrera .

" How are the preparations for the meeting going ? Don't make the schedule too tight , Juan and I need to catch up a few times over not so few bottles ", his father laughed at his word play while Kane and his mum exchanged equally exasperated looks .

" We'll go back to bed , go to sleep when you finish your chocolate ", his mum said and dragged his father away. 

Kane watched them go , smiling at how affectionate they were .

His father was quite scary to the general public and people often found it difficult to relate his father and this man when he was with his mum .

Kane had a sinking feeling that he might never experience that .

He thought of Reno, he wondered how she felt about all this .

He knew how much she hated Herrera .

Was she willing to set aside all of that hatred for a chance to be Alpha ?

He sighed and rubbed his face .

The truth was that he had been more frustrated with the paperwork because he had kept thinking of Reno's situation .

He had been grossly mistaken .

The feeling he had thought to be happiness was definitely not happiness , he could not bring himself to feel happy with the situation .

All he felt was frustration and anger .

Anger that she would really get married just for her goal to be Alpha .
