I took my car at 11am and drove to the company. I got to the company at 11:26am. It was such a good time for me to arrive. I decided to see some of my colleagues before my meeting with Irene. I had missed working and seeing their faces. I got to my office and the sweet smell of books and dust satisfied my heart. It felt good to be back to work. I sorted out some files before 12pm. As I walked through the hallway to Irene’s office, my stomach tightened and my throat went dry as I knocked. I already prepared myself for the worst. “Come in” her voice echoed behind the door. I opened the door and stood in front of her without a word. I looked above her head and kept my eyes keen at the portrait of Mr Dave on the wall. “Please sit, “ her cracked voice said. I sat down obediently like a robot and still didn’t say a word to her. I could feel the tension between us as my heart almost jumped out from my chest. “Maddie, how are you?” She managed to say. “Fine!” I replied sharply.
Cole could barely take his eyes off me the whole time. He was chopping and staring at me like a hungry lion. As soon as he turned off the gas forty six minutes later, he took off his apron and carried me on his shoulder. Cole didn’t stop till we got to the bedroom. He laid me down gently and leaned over me. “Silly!” He poked my head. “Teasing me? I almost chopped off my fingers” he kissed my neck. Cole smelled of fresh vegetables and curry sauce he had just made. “Baby, I think you should shower” I kissed his nose. My words were like triggering a gun. Cole frowned and sniffed himself. He got off me and sniffed his underarm. “I stink?” He asked, frowning. I sat up and held his shoulder. I helped him take off his shirt gently. “No baby, the baby doesn’t like you smelling like the kitchen “ I whispered, giving him a hug. He nodded and walked to the bathroom without a word. I knew he was upset. Cole wasn’t upset because I asked him to shower, he was upset because I turned him d
Cole turned down the volume of the television and I saw pure frustration in his eyes. He paused, looked at me and was at a loss for words. He fell back on the couch with his hands under his jaw. “I swear on my life Maddie, I didn’t tell my mom about the marriage. I don’t even know how she formulated that theory “ he explained gently. I sat down quietly because she has indirectly started a war. I felt stupid for thinking she was advocating for Cole, she is more intrested in ruining everything. I knew this interview had escalated everything. I held Cole’s hand and he came for a hug instead. “This is why I asked us to runaway. This is too much “ he sobbed gently in my arms. “Shiii. Nothing is too much. We will sort things out. Running away has nothing to do with this now. It will only raise more suspicions. You aren’t a coward baby” I comforted. As we talked, Cole’s phone started beeping. The notification sounds became too much that we couldn’t ignore. I left the couch to get th
Damien looked at with a soft smile and walked to the closet. He brought out a gift bag and handed it over to me. “What’s this?” I asked, curiously. He said nothing and waited for me to open it. I brought out a box that was wrapped beautifully. I looked at my husband with a smile and continued unboxing the rectangular box in front of me. I sweated nervously as I finally opened the box. I looked at the box and saw two keys. For a few seconds, my brain went blank. I couldn’t figure out why and what the two keys meant. I picked the first key and it looked like a safe key and the other was no key, it was a tag in form of a key. “Damien….” I muttered, confused. Damien came to me from behind on bed and gently massaged my shoulder. “Yes baby. You don’t like it?” He kissed my neck. “I don’t understand what they are. Where does this open?” I asked, picking the tiny key. Damien laughed and poked my head. “The other key, you don’t know what it is?” He chuckled. I nodded, because I had
I hissed slightly almost grumpy as I walked to bed. I picked up my phone and met so many notifications. Most were from my recent posts and others were from last night. I eagerly opened the notification and it completely made sense. I totally understood what my husband met. The first comment on my post was, “Show off!! It’s all fake”. I raised a brow because I had never had such comments before. Other comments followed. “Lol. More like a best business partner” , “so cute!! Enjoy”, “Always a spoit brat”, “I hope you realize we know all this is a lie”, “ Is that even real diamond?”. I got tired and exhausted from the trolls and tried calling Madison to know what was going on but I hung up before it could even ring. “What’s going on?” I asked Damien. Damien looked at me and said, “I told you to ignore because it isn’t important “. It was more annoying listening to him act all cool when there was so much hate concerning me out there. “I insist “ I almost yelled. Damien lo
Madison’s POV I had tears in my eyes as I slammed the door. I walked straight to my office and started packing my stuff from the office desk and drawer. I boxed them and took one last look at my office before I walked out. The looks on all the company staff were alarming. I was the last person they expected to quit. As I got to the elevator alone, I cried out my eyes before I got to the last floor. “Maddie” the manager ran after me as I got to the parking lot. I stood still till he walked to me hurriedly. “Maddie, what’s going on? Why are you leaving, I mean like this? “ he asked, trying to catch his breath. “ Mr Edward “, I called softly. “I quit, and please don’t tell me to reconsider because I won’t” I said, snuffling as I opened my car’s door. Edward tried to say more words but I was already inside my car. I drove back home and pressed the doorbell. Cole opened the door and he was surprised to see me. He helped me with my box and closed the door as soon as I walked
“Are you saying I am a bad influence for Chole?” I asked with a cracked voice. I was shaking and not expecting Damien’s response to be direct. “Yes! Yes Irene. I expected so much from you”. His words are like vinegar on injury. I was crushed. It was the last thing for me to imagine, being a terrible influence on a kid that calls me mommy. “Irene, I got a call from your dad. I heard your best friend quit her job because of you” he applauded me. “You are doing great, wife. What is actually going on in that small skull of yours?” He asked, yawning. Damien was mean with his words. His words reminded me of Damien I first met. “Are you also saying that it was my fault she left?” I asked, sobbing. My sobbing had nothing on Damien. He walked towards the water dispenser and got himself a glass of water. “Whose fault?” He asked, taking another sip from the glass. “Irene, twice you had fought with Maddie she didn’t quit or stop working. This time she resigned after a meeting with
I spent the entire day indoors. Damien walked in at 3:26pm and froze at the door. He met me while watching a series of horror movies and he couldn’t believe his eyes. “Since when?” He finally spoke up as he locked the door and walked to the closet. He got out of the closet and my eyes didn’t flinch away from the Tv. “Have you been watching this all day?” He asked, taking a seat next to me. I nodded without taking my eyes off the Tv. I was getting more interested in the movie that had kept my mind off the real world and I didn’t want to stop. “How are you feeling? Had lunch yet?” My husband asked, trying to have a conversation with me. I wasn’t interested in talking to him, I feared I might start thinking about all that was going on. “Good. Haven’t eaten” I hugged the pillow in fear as the ghost drowned a baby. “If it scares you, why stay on it?” He hissed slightly. I ignored him and paid full attention to the screen. Damien picked the remote and turned off the Tv. My
