RULE NUMBER TWO

“What do you mean? There must be hundreds of people working here, and you haven’t even checked.” I felt myself get defensive, my voice raising. The receptionist whose name tag read, Elsie, looked right and left nervously, as if looking for help from somewhere.

“I have worked here for years, I know the names of everyone, and if you booked an appointment, it must be with a senior executive, none of them have the name Downing.” She licked her lower lip as she explained calmly, as if trying her best not to spook me.

Now it was my turn to sweat. It was Shepherd’s Construction, I read all about how it was family owned, which meant the senior executives like she said would be Shepherd’s.

“Asides the executives, no Downing at all?” My voice had gotten quieter, the top of my ears felt hot. He had made a comment about my impatience, that small smile accompanying it as his eyes followed me across the room.

Elsie looked relieved that she wouldn’t be calling security, and she shook her head.

“No, but I could book an appointment with a junior executive if you are looking…”

My ears picked up on his voice, the deep, confident timbre I had longed to hear for days. Inside of my chest constricts, how was I imagining his voice here? But then the voice comes again, speaking over the droning voice of Elsie.

His voice had the kind of deepness that rumbled at the pit of your belly, the kind that stirred up things in your mind, and in your pants, it was unmistakable, and even now, I felt my pants tighten.

My feet carry me in the direction of the richness of his voice, breathlessly I follow, he was getting nearer, and I walked towards him, hurrying. At the back of my mind I could hear Elsie call me back, but I don’t stop, my pace increased.

His voice beckoning me, and like I did for three days, without a second thought, I follow, my legs carrying me, moving me. I come to a halt when he was just few feet away from me.

My breathing came out loud, my heart slamming against my chest, I could hear everything and nothing at the same time. Everything else felt irrelevant. He was right here in front of me.

In a cream and navy suit that had been tailored to his body frame, he looked perfect, unlike when he was at the resort, he was shaven clean, and with both looks, he appeared perfectly delicious.

A few men were walking with him, all of them taking notes from what he was talking about, they listened intently. He had a cute frown on his face, the one that appeared whenever he was concentrated on something. He rolled his eyes playfully and when I said it was cute.

“The only cute thing here is you, and your round ass.”

My response to that, like almost everything he said to me, was non stop blushing, and then he went ahead and squeezed my ass. I liked it, I tried to replicate it numerous times after he left, but it was like his hands were the only ones that could do that.

He stopped in front of me, his eyes finally registering my presence. His green eyes widened in shock, and underneath it, I see excitement, lust, and then as quickly as they appeared, he blinked them away.

“I am so sorry Mr. Shepherd, I tried to call him back and he wouldn’t stop.” Elsie apologized profusely.

Who is Mr. Shepherd? His name is Kennedy Downing. He had strictly asked me to moan Daddy but I knew what he told me the day I met him.

He had sat at the resort’s bar, the extra large one, it had been scanty that day. But I noticed him slumped into the sofa, as if he wished to disappear into it. He had been nursing a scotch. The second I saw him, loosened tie, disheveled hair and all, I knew he had come to hide out. I also knew I wanted to run my fingers through his hair, I wanted to sit on his legs and feel his muscles beneath me.

So I went to him, my heart in my throat, and then I asked,

“Refill?” My voice came out squeaky, as if I was begging him to do something to me. He did, he looked right up at me, and I had to hold on to the cart of drinks, or my knees would have given out from underneath me.

 He stared at me intensely even as I poured his refill, he stared at me from over the rim of his glass, and his first words to me were;

“You look so fucking submissive and breedable.”

I had choked on my saliva, and then choked on him later. His kisses were invasive, he forced my mouth open and kissed me until the world spun in my vision.

“My name is Alec.” I said in between kisses, because he said things that made my knees weak and I didn’t know what  to say in response.

He smirked at me, pinched my mouth open with his teeth, and then with his hand around my neck, he breathed,

“Kennedy, Kennedy Downing.”

I hadn't even given him a last name, but it wasn’t possible that he said Shepherd and I heard Downing. Unless, unless he lied to me.

“It’s okay.” He said to Elsie, dismissing her with a wave of his hand, she looked between him and me, hesitating just a moment too long before she walked away.

“Why don’t we continue this meeting tomorrow?” He asked the men by his side, they looked ready to contest it, but he was a Shepherd, and this was Shepherd Construction, so they walked away.

“Gentleman, I’m afraid I don’t take bookings on the spot, you can meet with Elsie, and she would show you to my secretary. Do have a nice day.”

What? Was he pretending not to know me? He couldn’t have forgotten, I mean we had fun, he said it himself,

“Touching you is like a drug, I can’t get enough.” He whispered it my ear, his hands dipped into my shirt.

“It’s me Alec…”

“Do have a nice day, gentleman.”

I blink and he walks past me, his posture elegant as always. My jaw dropped to the ground, my head spinning, I tried and failed to understand what he meant by that. Was he pretending not to know me? And he was what? Kennedy Shepherd??

Without thinking, I turn around, following after him, my heart pounding away in my chest. I hadn’t really thought about what to say when I saw him, I assumed, foolishly, that he would be happy to see me, and that we would finally go all the way, because I was ready now, I was ready to do everything and anything with him.

I find him at the parking lot, he was climbing into a sleek black, Maybach. I wait until he was inside and about to start the car before I climb into the passenger seat. I lock the door, trapping us both inside.

My heart still slamming furiously against my chest, I had never done this before, there were a lot of things I hadn’t done pre him, whatever his name was. And I felt alive, for the first time in all my twenty three years of living.

“What are you doing?!” He asked, his eyes wide.

I look away from his eyes, if I looked any further, I would beg him to kiss me again, I knew I would, I was a sucker for him.

“You left me. I came for you.”

He says nothing. My hands were moist, and I was barely able to think past the scent of him that was thick in the car. But I force myself to look in his eyes when I speak.

“You told me that the world was my oyster, and I was free to do as I please. After you left, I realized it was true, all my life I lived following the script written by someone else for me. I finally chose and I choose you.” I swallowed, the next words felt like they would burst out of me.

“I choose to do you as I please.”

“I saw the money you forgot.” I say quickly, giving him no room to argue with me.The room had been void of his things the next morning, but bundles of money stacked on top of the table, which I brought with me, remained. I wondered why the money was left behind, nothing else, just the money, everything else methodically wiped. He exhaled sharply, giving up the idea of pretending not to know me,“I didn’t forget it, it was for your time.”I had hoped that wasn’t it. I felt insulted, I enjoyed myself, I wasn’t someone who was selling his body for money, I wanted it. Still, I took a deep breath, it was part of my promise to myself, to do anything and everything in my power to be by his side. It was the first time I wanted something for myself, someone for myself. “I assumed, I took all of it, you can’t dream about taking a cent from it.”He stared at me in a way that said he didn’t want it back.“Good, because it was too much. I didn’t do anything for that much money. I wasn’t even

“No. No, you cannot do that. There's still time to cancel your application.” He was affected by what I told him, but he was proving to be difficult. He held on to the steering wheel, probably trying to ground himself so he doesn't reach out and touch me. “I told you already, I plan to disobey every single one of your rules.”“Alec... You don't want to play this game with me.” His voice was lower, had even more vibration beneath it. Inside of my pants, I was hard, really hard. If he touched any part of my body right now, I might explode. “Really? Because it seems like it is you who should not play this game with me.” I refute sharply. We were dancing to a new tune, it was never like this between us. And now I was openly daring him. And he liked that I was daring him. “You have gotten a lot bolder little good Alec.”He said with raised brow. He used the nickname, a score for me. “I was raised well.” I say, referring to him. He wanted me to say whatever I wanted, if it had consequen

With a suppressed huff, I stare at the last of many messages I had sent since last night. A total of ten messages, all of them desperate, begging; just he way he liked it. And all of them went unanswered, he read all of them, pointedly ignoring them. I barely slept last night, and this morning, I almost slept through my alarm. To say I am having a rough morning is a gross understatement. I got to the venue with just a minute to spare, Cait gave me a suspicious glance, with no time to reprimand me, she nods in my direction. When they call my name, I steal a glance at the phone again, expecting and hoping for a response from him, but all I see is my last message, “At least tell me where you are.”He read it, to his credit, he read it few minutes after I sent it.“Mr. Sanchez?” The lady calling the names called out impatiently, no time for one more text, I hurry inside the room. For the first time in a while, I was actually nervous about the interview, the fear of failing and then

Silence. It’s crazy how silence can mean so much and so little at the same time. My mind cannot stop interpreting the silence from his end; maybe he had gotten bored of me, or sick and tired, maybe he was mad at me, I had broken the first rule he gave me after all. The biggest contender of all the maybes, me ignoring him was a step too far. Cradling my phone against my chest, I grind the insides of my cheek to stop myself from chewing on my nails, I had already started to bite them, a bad habit of mine I thought I had long lost. He was bringing out parts of me that were long lost. Or didn’t exist before.“Seriously, you might wear me down with all of that sighing.” Ash whispers quickly, her eyes remain on the man giving the orientation lecture. Since we sat in the conference hall, those of us who succeeded in getting the job, Ash has been laser focused on the lecture, while I couldn’t hear a word being said. I refresh my messages, the last message was the same one he sent and I ign

TEAM FIVE-- ALEC SANCHEZ.The words don’t change no matter how many times I stare at them. Jayce(I heard Ash call him that), had smiled patiently at me when I asked him to cross check the list once more, it could have been a mix up, team five??? “Please check your emails, you must have gotten mails from your team, that should contain everything you need to know. Now, you may return to your teams.”That was at least ten minutes ago, the lucky ones that got picked by team one and two, had hurried in their direction, already looking down on the rest of us. Great. My eyes return to the mail I received, the header was right there, the only person from this batch assigned to the least team, me. I don’t suppress a scoff, this was all his ploy to send me back, but it only made me want to fight against him even more. “I thought I had it worse…” Ash murmurs beside me, she stared at the orange block like it were her nemesis, in a way it was, starting out your career in the almost bottom team

Unique reason. Mr. Statham had a twinkle in his eyes that I could not decipher, when he said the words to me. His head cocked to the side as if sizing me up. I felt self conscious for a while right before I slipped out of the conference hall, embarrassment creeping up on me fast. “He said he had already gotten everyone he needed before it got to my turn.” Ash sighs, slinking beside me. Both of us crane our necks to look at the team one building. The answers to my question just beyond the doors.I knew his excuse, but i still wanted to know what he told Mr. Statham, I shiver just thinking about the way he stared at me. Did he know? I try to decipher what he was thinking when he stared at me. Finally, I shake my head, he couldn’t know. I was still Christopher’s secret. “I never expected his reason for rejecting you would be, not a team player.” Ash mutters, her voice thick with something I didn’t understand. He was right, I had never been a team player, I only knew how to do things my

Tense silence fill the room, everyone seem to be holding their breath, our eyes on this Shepherd that wasn’t mine. Sweat beads rolled down the sides of my head, his words replaying over and over in my head. He wants to kick me out, and he has the power to do so. Heels clicked their way into the room, breaking the silence, I still don’t look away from the Shepherd with hard eyes. “I am so sorry, Mr. Shepherd, he is one of us, and we haven’t had the chance to train him.”At the familiar, panicked voice of Caitlyn Holt, my eyes finally leave the man and find her, she looked distraught, her face pinched into one that was pleading with him. She grabs me by my wrist, pulling me to herself, now she was standing between Mr. Shepherd and myself, not much of shield as both of us tower over her, but the effect was amazing, I had been feeling very alone and very exposed, if she had come any later, I might have run away. He had whispered in my ear at the resort, the first time I had pressed myself against him like this. He sucked in through his teeth then, so he must feel the same way now, I wanted him to say it again, the words drove me crazy. “Chris?”At the sound of Cait’s voice, he jumped away from me. The world spun in my vision, but I still had the wall behind me to support myself, my knees were buttery and my heart would not stop beating. There was a buzzing sound coming from somewhere around me, I didn’t know where. It took a while to realize the buzzing sound was my own whimpering, I work hard to shut myself up. He never showed up that night. The coffee I was loading into my system wasn’t half as bitter as I am feeling, yet I needed the coffee to stay awake. I didn’t have to rush to work today, and all I did as I wait for Lady Rockbell’s driver, is to almost drown myself in coffee and stare at my phone. Not a single text or call.I lift my eyes out the cafe window, hoping to enjoy the scenery, it was still summer, the skies were blue above us, and tourists littered the place, for the first time I was envious of them, I was as care free as they are few hours ago. Flashing headlights snatch my attention, a Mercedes with tinted windows, an obvious tell, Lady Rockbell’s driver was here for me. She had also given me instructions to come to this cafe and wait, she didn’t even listen to me when I asked if I could drive myself there. I finish the last dregs of my lukewarm coffee, pick up the to go order and head out the door and into the sunlight. The drive is short and terse, the driver sa

Gunther stays silent, debating the entire thing in his head, if it were up to him, this would be all the work I would do.“I would oversee it.”“The second I see your handwork, I will be pulling the plug, don’t make me repeat myself, Shepherd.” The call disconnects after that, I assume Gunther must be feeling worse than frustrated with the situation. “My assistant will contact you with the details of my schedule, you can see yourself out.” She announces, her eyes returning to the pile on her table.I feel

I wasn’t sure what I was expecting, but it wasn’t this. The building was just after the road, with enough foot and car traffic, large, but welcoming, my mind for some reason plays a different, alternate way I would have designed the building. I shake the thoughts quickly as they come. “It looks like she could be selling cup cakes.”“Or drugs.” Ash deadpans, finally dragging her eyes away from the building to me.I continue to peer at the building, hoping to find a glimpse of her car, or her cut throat gray jacket. “My job hangs on this.”“Your team leader could talk to your brother, that is very lucky actually. Christopher was right, his brother was willing to do anything and everything. If he knew about my parents, he must have done his research, I wonder what else he found out. I tuck my knees together, I had to be really careful from here out. “Why do you have to cut my team if I don’t do it, you can simply just remove me from the job.” They told me it was all a ploy, and that he wanted to remove Christopher from the company, I had to hear it from him, I needed him to admit it was only because he hated his brother.“Your team barely makes any profit with the rubbish redesigning they do now, the only reason your team is still here is because mine makes enough to cover your losses, and I am done with that. Pull your weight or get cut.” He says this in a razor sharp way that makes me realize this is real life, I was no longer in the cocoon of the resort, real things like this happened every day. I worked on auto pilot after that, adrenaline fueling me, my movements which would have been stiff moved fluidly. My fingers swiping the keys, and when we rode around in it, cackling and laughing, my heart kept beating crazily inside of my chest. Later, we laid awake in bed, chuckling to ourselves, still high on adrenaline, I asked him,“Why did we have to do that? Again.I sigh as my truck rolls to a stop in the parking lot of our team building. I am hesitant to step out of the car this morning. It took everything in me not to stay back home today and feign the flu or something. He had chuckled after I made the first few awkward sounds last night.“Relax yourself, little Alec.”I swallowed a piece of chicken, desperate to do well for him, I ended up sounding like a dying animal. We had walked the entire way back to my apartment in silence. Not the awkward type, considering what he said to me earlier. But the kind that spoke volumes. Both of us in our own heads. Inside of my head was the memory of his hands on my shoulders playing in an endless loop. He immediately draped a towel over my head once we entered the apartment, he even ruffled through my closet for a change of clothes, stopping when he found a T shirt I have owned for at least four years, and a short. “Change into these and fast. I don’t want you catching a cold.”Like always, my body obeyed his instructions, I walked into the bathroom, my body flaming hot just thinking about the fact that he was on the other side of the door. I prayed for the door to open-- I left it unlocked, and he would walk in, but he didn’t. The door stayed shut the entire time.
