Abegail’s Point of View.

It’s already forty-five minutes past eleven when I looked out from the window with a deep sigh. Dang it, why Selvin has to come home too late? I really want to talk to him about the argument that had happened hours ago.

I want to get out of this mansion as soon as possible. My friends are really willing to help, but still, I have to tell my husband about it. This time, I don’t care if he’ll agree or not, I’ll be leaving soon.

I dialed his number again and shook my head when the operator said that the receiver was busy and unreachable. My hands started to tremble as the anxiety began stitching itself on my nerves.

Where are you now, Selvin?

“Abegail!”

I closed my eyes tightly and turned to face the door. With a loud thud, the door was opened by Darwin Jones, Selvin’s biological father.

His brows were drawn too deep, almost crashing to each other. His footsteps were heavy with real and strong thuds as he took his way to me.

“What did you do?” he asked with his deep, angry voice. “You stole my daughter’s bracelet?”

I unhinged my jaw and shook my head. “No—” A slap cut my line abruptly. I raised my hand to caress my cheek. The pain felt like burning, running through the soft surface of my skin.

“Liar!” he screamed at me. “I’ll tie you up in court, you will see! I’ll make you pay more than the value of that fucking bracelet!”

“I didn’t—” Another slap on the other cheek made me feel the slight burning on my skin again. The second slap sent tears on each corner on my eyes.

Gradually, I glanced back at Darwin with my widened eyes. I couldn’t gather my thoughts, I just stared at him while aghast flashed in my eyes.

He pointed his powerful finger at me, waved it slowly as he gritted his own teeth. His eyes were striking, like daggers ready to kill me into shreds.

“Get the hell out of my house!” he snapped. “Tomorrow, you shouldn’t be here.”

“I’ll leave now!” I couldn’t keep it anymore, I need to scream it out. “I don’t mind leaving this toxic household! You all will rot in here, I’d swear!”

When he raised his hand to slap me again, I took a step backward and ruined my handy mirror near me. I picked up a fragment and pointed it to him. “Yes, go! Come closer and I’ll definitely do it!”

Darwin froze, watching me with the sharp broken mirror on my hand. He shook his head and took a step away from me. That’s the time I realized that he was drunk.

“I’ll call the police,” he muttered. “I’ll tell everybody that you’re having the urge to kill us here.” In an instant, he left the room.

I sobbed, dropped on my knees as I covered my eyes with the heel pads of my hands. I couldn’t believe this has to happen, what have gone wrong? I didn’t do anything bad to them, why are they so ruthless!

I should leave now. I should pack my things right away. I pulled myself up on my feet, picked up my purse and phone, before I came rushing out from the room. As I walked, I constantly glanced around, afraid that they might catch me leaving all of a sudden.

I dialed Macey’s number, and when I reached the door, she finally answered it. “Hello, Abe? Is there anything wrong, it’s too late.”

“Let me sleep in your place, please,” I almost mumbled my words, sniffed and came out from the main door of the mansion.

“Abe, you’re crying!” she snapped. “What the heck, where are you now? Tell me your exact location, I’ll pick you up right away!”

“I just came out from the mansion,” I answered. “I’ll ride a taxi on my way to your place, please open the door for me right away.”

“Oh my god,” she said and gasped from the other line. “Aren’t they looking at you as their daughter-in-law? Why do I feel like they’re abusing you like a prisoner!”

“Abegail!”

I froze on my feet. It was Sarah. Damn it!

“Come back here, you thief!” Sarah screamed and ran to follow me. I stopped on my place and took a deep breath. I should fight with this woman, she’s the one who made the mess!

“Pick me up as soon as you can,” I told Macey from the other line.

“Wait, Abe—”

I dropped the call, heard my name being screamed again, and spun around to face Sarah. She was sneering while putting her hands on her waist.

“Now you have a plan on leaving with my bracelet, huh?” she asked. “Give me that! Don’t bring it anywhere, you thief!”

“I told you already, I didn’t steal your jewelry! Stop accusing me for heaven’s sake!” I screamed and took steps away from her.

She shook her head. “I know you stole it,” she pointed out. “If you’re not going to give it to me, then I’ll force you!” She raised her long arms and snatched my hair instantly.

I screamed my throat out, and felt how she pulled my hair and dragged it around the mansion. I held her hand, trying to remove it from my hair but I was helpless. She brought me upstairs, to my room specifically, and pushed me inside the room.

“Since you’re already a thief,” she said and grinned slyly at me. “You should be imprisoned here, you dumb bitch.” With a slam, she locked the door.

“No!” I screamed. Damn, the door lock wasn’t designed to be opened from the inside like a regular lock. It will be locked from the outside, and I can’t open the damned door!

I still tried to open it, pulling and turning the knob hard, but it’s not helping. The whole room was enveloped by darkness, except from the dim light coming from the moon that’s now hiding behind the clouds.

“No…” I mumbled and shook my head. I left my purse and phone outside, I accidentally dropped it when Sarah pulled my hair hard. I can’t contact Macey now.

I went to the bed, trying to feel the numbness on my head. I felt like I lost a lot of hair strands, the pain on my head and cheeks was unbearable. Oh, Selvin where are you now?

Without a warning, the door opened. My heart jumped in terror, but when I saw Selvin, walking in, I rushed to come to him and hugged him tightly.

I cried on his chest as I pulled him closer. “Finally, you’re home!”

“Wha’ happened—?” he hiccupped. The smell of alcohol reached my nose, I stifled a sigh. Selvin’s drunk.

He chuckled and lifted me up. I squeaked in surprise and snaked my arm on his shoulder. “Selvin!” I called out, but found myself being tossed to the bed. “Selvin, wait!”

He started removing his clothes while he looked at me in a groggy position. “Honey..” he murmured.

I was about to jump off the bed but he pinned my down. I shook my head and started crying again. “No, no. Not now please..”

“Never say no to me,” he muttered and nibbled on my neck. He slight bit it that made me close my eyes tightly.

“Selvin, don’t!” I screamed.

“Why, don’t you love me anymore?” he asked and tore my clothes apart.

I screamed for help. “Please, please!” I tried to escape but he pinned me down and clamped me between his sturdy legs.

For the second time, I felt my soul leaving my body again. The energy ran out until I just laid there, letting Selvin do what he want.

I can’t protest, he’s strong and drunk. All I have to do is to run after this long, exhausting night.

Macey, please come over.
