Chapter 1

Onika’s POV

I stared out of the window of the taxi excitedly as I approached Nathan’s house. I didn’t notify him that I would be coming because I wanted to surprise him.

Today was his birthday and I did a lot out of my confidence zone to be able to afford his gifts, it was all going to be worth it as I pictured the smile on his face.

Soon I arrived at his mansion and I paid the taxi man and I got down carrying all the gifts to my chest.

I was utterly excited and I doubted when last I was that happy that the thought of putting a smile on his face was enough to keep me going.

I turned the door knob and I walked in, there was no sign of him in the kitchen so I inquired about his whereabouts from the maid.

“He is still in bed.” She muttered but I could notice a foul countenance on her face, it seemed like fear but I didn’t bother paying that much attention to it.

I thanked her and dropped all the gifts in the living room as I proceeded upstairs to Nathan’s living room.

I could hear a feminine voice giggling inside the room and my heart immediately raced at the thought. I wondered what was going on as my hands froze on the doorknob.

Who was he in with? And what were they giggling about? My heart was starting to become heavy and all of that excited countenance slowly slipped away.

I gathered up the courage and turned the doorknob walking into the room. Nathan’s gaze turned to look at me alongside a lady who was wearing my supposed robe.

My heart thundered as I leaned against the door for support. Nathan walked up to me but I moved away from him.

“It’s not what you think Onika and calm down.” He said calmly reaching for my shoulder but I moved away from him.

“I calm down? Calm down about what exactly? About how you’re screwing another girl while I spent all I had to get your birthday gifts? And you dare to tell me to calm down?” I roared out walking ahead to him as I turned my gaze to the lady but Nathan immediately stepped in front of her.

His action hurt me badly because it was obvious he didn’t want anything to happen to her. My chest felt heavy like the rest of my body and my legs began to fail me.

“Listen up Onika and enough with this madness, if you won’t let me speak then you  might as well leave and conclude what you please.” He said in a tone of finality avoiding my gaze.

I finally calmed down, maybe because it was time too, or maybe because I feared he was indirectly telling me to leave him.

“Okay, I want to listen to your explanation. Who is she and what is she doing in your room, in my robe and what was all the giggling about?” I asked calmly even if it seemed like I forced the words out of my mouth.

Nathan was quiet for a while and finally, he started talking.

“I honestly don’t think I owe you that much of an explanation, to be honest. I’ll tell you a few for the sake of decency…”

His countenance and tone to me already changed and it made my chest ache even more.

He was never like this and the only time I remembered he ever acted like this was when his mom asked me to leave me and date someone of his status.

Fortunately for us, we made it past that stage until now.

“This here is Anna and she’s my friend. She spent the night here, she only came here to thank me for helping her last night, hence the giggles. What else?” He asked coldly.

Even if I bought the excuse he gave, I couldn’t buy his attitude along with it. He was being cold and mean to me and it was so painful to be overlooked.

“What’s wrong with you Nathan? Why are you speaking to me in such a manner?” I managed to utter as my tone had already begun breaking.

He remained quiet and I smiled and walked out of the room. I went back downstairs to get my bag and leave and probably revisit the issue. Right now the atmosphere was tense and I feared the outcome.

I stared at the gifts I bought for him and how excited I was coming here, he just had to ruin it.

I could sense the tears falling down my cheeks as I wiped them off immediately. Just as I approached the door I heard his tone.

“Wait.”

I turned slowly and stared at him deeply not wanting to miss a single emotion.

He walked closer, noticed the gifts, and then returned his gaze to me.

“You didn’t have to do that, I asked you to stop spending your money on me.” He said in a cold tone that sent me aback.

“I just wanted to do something special for you, it wasn’t a lot,” I muttered even if that was a blunt lie. I spent a whole lot I didn’t have on the gifts.

Nathan knew I was lying and he didn’t smile like he always did, this time around his face remained strict and cold.

“Thank you fit the gift but I need to be real with you Onika, I don’t know exactly how you’re supposed to take this but take it anyways..” he made a slight pause.

I expected the worst to begin admitting he had something to do with the lady in his room but reality hit me real hard.

“I do not want to continue this relationship with you. I’ve been trying to make things work but I can’t continue that for long, my mom doesn't support us and she never will. I hope you understand.”

Understand? Understand that I was being dumped.

I lost all parts to speak, I knew if I stayed there for one more minute I was going to break down, and without uttering a single word I began walking out of the room.

But just as I got to the door, I heard the lady whispering but I could still make sense out of her words.

“See? That wasn't so bad babe. Good riddance to bad rubbish if you ask me.”

Good riddance to bad rubbish? I remained calm regardless and waited to hear Nathan's response and when it came, I suddenly wished the ground could open up and swallow me.

“I agree babe.”

I've never really believed that Nathan loved me as much as I did, but this? This came as a total shock.

It felt like I had been poured ice-cold water and all the flakes in my eyes were beginning to fall off.

For the first time in a long time, I saw clearly just how much of a fluke I was for putting up with him all these years, letting him treat me like a random slut he picked from the club when it was quite the opposite.

Without warning, I spun around, walked to where he sat with the lady, and delivered a hot slap across his face.

“What the fu–”

I didn't let him finish before delivering another hot one on his cheeks.

“For three good years, I've loved you wholeheartedly Nathan. Given you everything I have including my money, yet you treat me like a nobody.” I spat fiercely, my eyes blazing with fury.

“But from this day henceforth, this heart of mine will no longer beat for you, and tell your mom I wish her all the best with a daughter-in-law who will never love you the way I did.”

I didn't wait to hear whatever he had to say before storming out, I had seen the shocked look plastered on his face and that was more than enough.

Frustration was starting to slip in, mixing in with anxiousness.I was feeling very hot even though the room was well-ventilated. A lot of people were going to be present today and not just people, but Socialites of a very high social cadre. I could tell I was going to be intimidated by their presence because they were just… rich. I suddenly had mixed feelings about my paintings and presenting them. What if they didn’t like it? What if I was ridiculed? What if no one even bothers paying attention to it? I reached for Kent’s hands and held mine immediately as I saw his gaze narrow to our hands, I smiled.“Onika…You’re here.” He stammered and I could see the shock and disappointment evident in his face which was to my delight. “Yes, I am, it's my party,” I said confidently. Kent looked at the both of us alongside the other one and everyone was wondering what was going on.“Do you both know yourselves from somewhere ?” Kent finally asked, breaking the awkward silence.“Oh yes, we do,” I replied almost immediately, staring weirdly at me. I could tell he was uncomfortable and something about that just made me happy.Kent stared at me for some further explanation but I didn’t respond, I remained quiet and kept on staring at Nathan who looked like he wanted to be swallowed. After some minutes of awkward silence, Kent finally spoke.“

Can’t you try talking to those you’re closer to? they shouldn’t be paying attention to a meaningless message.” Dion asked.I was on a distress call with Dion, my very good friend and business partner because right now I was about to lose everything I had worked for. My partners were threatening to disassociate because they got a message saying I wasn’t all stable because I wasn't married yet and although it seemed like a very stupid reason, they didn’t let me have a break about it leading to this call with Dion.“Tell me about it, and when I find whosoever was behind these shenanigans, I’m not letting him off the hook for any reason, this is costing me a lot,” I said, burying my face into my hands. “We are going to have to find a way around it or else we just go ahead with what they want. Getting married shouldn’t be a problem for someone like you. You have Regina, remember?”“Yes, I d…” my voice trailed when the rea

After some pondering and hesitation, I opened the door and I was shocked to the core to see Nathan, at my house. What the hell was he doing here? Who told him he could be coming around my house or something?“What do you want here?" I snapped coldly.“Geez, you don't have to be so cold, won't you at least let me come in?” He teased resting on the wall but I wasn't having any of it.I blocked the door ready to shut it in his face.“What do you want here? I won't ask again. You're not welcome on my property.” I snapped. He smiled and moved closer to me but I stepped back immediately.“What do you think you

I didn't want to hear anything else he had to say.Fast forward to today, I was putting on a red dress and was looking really good. I couldn't help but admire myself. The way I was dressed, one would think that I was going out on a real date. But I mentally reminded myself that I was only going out with Nathan as a part of my revenge plan.“You're doing this for one reason, Onika - revenge. Don't get carried away. This is all just a contract,” I said to myself.Staring deeper into the mirror, I said out loud,“Nathan, I'm going to make you pay for everything you've done to me. I'll make su

Where are we at our destination already? I looked to the right to see a huge signboard that had a lady and a man holding a camera on it. I realized that we were at the studio.“We are here,” Nathan spoke.“I’m not blind,” I responded to him bluntly. NATHAN'S POVI felt like a shell of myself the next day as I sat in my office.Believe me when I said I had tried to get some sleep but that was a luxury that I apparently couldn't afford because I had spent the night tossing and turning, my mind going haywire with thoughts. How was it possible that she hadn't checked into the hotel? I had gotten them to go to the nearby hotels but there was no trace of her. There was no way that she could have slept on the streets.Dread filled my veins and I felt true fear the previous night. I didn't believe that I could be this worried over someone but this was fucking Onika! Of course I would be worried about her! I fucking cared about her and now it felt like a part of me has been violently ripped out, leaving me without a vital piece of my life.I had spent the entire night waiting for a call—any damn call—from the people I had stationed in Barcelona, but my phone had remained frustratingly silent. Not a single update. Not from the men I sent t

NATHAN'S POVI pinched the bridge of my nose, sighing heavily, feeling my head ache as I paced across my study. The room was dim and it was dark outside already. I had a long day tomorrow, I had one more day to my wedding but my wife was still missing. Gods.I hit the dial button again, the phone ringing in my ear."Talk," I ordered the moment the call connected.A gruff voice responded on the other end. "We’re still looking, sir. One of our men is sweeping the northern districts, while the other is covering the downtown area."I halted mid-step, my brain short circuiting. "What?""He insisted that splitting up would be more efficient. Said there were too many areas to cover—""Goddammit," I muttered under my breath, gripping the phone tighter. "I gave a direct fucking order, and they’re already doing whatever they want?"The man hesitated. "I told him it’d be best to stick together, but—""Then why didn’t you stop him?" My voice was dangerously low now, my patience thinning fast."He

I had the money, I just needed to get this phone so I could head next to the hotel.Maybe I could ask this man for help on which hotel I could pick but the way he kept blabbing, urging me to buy the phone and bringing new suggestion had begun to piss me off not to mention that he was constantly cutting me off before he would pull out a better phone, eager that I buy a more expensive one.I couldn't blame him, I probably gave off the air of someone who could afford all these. With a sigh, I tugged my hoodie lower, gripping the phone i

Patience was just not one of her values. Even seeing her now as she had the guts to waltz in, made me sick to my guts when I remembered what she did.Regina turned to me, her smile widening. It was such an unlikely choice for her so I could understand why she chose it but the problem was I didn't know where in Barcelona and I had been sitting here for a few minutes, contemplating if I should go straight into action or just make sure I was right first of all. Make sure she was actually in Barcelona.I thought about the flight line that Mr Sam Damon had supplied to me when I had asked what flight she had flown so that I could keep a track on her so I'd know what time the plane took off to time when she would be back. NATHAN’S POV"Mr Nathan, this is madness."I sighed, pinching the bridge of my nose. Across the desk, Richard Foster, one of the event planners I had hired, was staring at me like I had just suggested we hold the wedding in a burning building. Why was everyone so worked up about my wedding?"It’s a wedding, not a business merger," he continued, tapping a pen against his notepad that was resting on the table. "You’re giving me less than two days to finalize everything. The media frenzy alone is making it impossible to secure vendors without doubling the cost, and half of them are hesitant because of the recent scandal and the fact that they won't want to be caught up—""Then offer them triple," I cut in flatly, arching a brow so I could look at him.Richard’s eyes widened. "Triple? Nathan, that’s not how negotiations work—""That’s exactly how negotiations work," I shot back. "You find their price, then you make it impossible for them to say no. That’s Business logics, Richard. I sugge
