Sebastian was impressed. The new technology SST developed was unproven, but it looked very promising. His decision to sign up with their company pleased him.
Having motion sensor control and a wide-angle lens for the cameras was an enormous improvement over the old security system. It was cost-effective and covered every area that had blind spots before.
Sebastian received a call from SST earlier that there was a last-minute change with the crew assigned to do the installation. He didn’t really care who came to do the work, as long as Clara would be there as promised.
He was getting worried but he didn’t only have one, but three of the SST executives at his behest, ready to answer all of his questions.
It surprised Sebastian that the top dogs were doing the installation themselves. He thought they had people for that, but it showed how knowledgeable they were about their own product, and how dedicated they were to a job done right.
Clara piqued his interest, and he couldn’t wait to know more about her.
“How much would it take for you to transfer to my company?” he asked after her presentation.
“Are you poaching me right now?” Clara asked, flabbergasted.
“Let me tell you, all three of us come in a package, so it’s not gonna work,” Clara added.
“No, not them, just you.” He paused to stare for dramatic effect.
“I will give you a top-of-the-line research facility with highly trained people at your disposal,” he challenged.
Max looks at Jeremy, waggles his eyebrows, and grins. His eyes seemed to say, ‘Ooohhh.. Look at these two. Something is happening, and I cannot wait for Clara to kick his ass.’
“You can’t afford me. I already own 30% of this company.” She stared at him while her jaw clenched.
“A good investment, I see.”
“How do you think we came up with this technology? I already have that top-of-the-line research facility you are talking about. Plus, I am not for sale,” she smirked.
‘That’s what they all say, but at the right price, I know you will cave.’ He sneered silently.
Sebastian pretended to rub his lip so he could hide his smile. The more they spent time together, the more Clara intrigued him.
‘Who are you, Clara Johnson?’ His plan to cajole, or confront her, wasn’t working, and now it was time to take the gentler route.
“Oh, my bad! I apologize for my indiscretion. I did not think you were for sale. Just wanted to see how dedicated you are to staying in San Jose. I was thinking, maybe I could entice you to move to San Diego. This city can use someone like you, and I’d rather you worked for my company than anybody else’s.” He stares at her pointedly.
Clara squinted an eye. ‘Why did it feel like he was not talking about work anymore?’ she shuddered and looked away.
“Still not for sale,” she adds, now pissed off more than ever.
“Don’t you know when to quit?” she said a little too brusquely.
Max stepped in before Clara blew the deal for them. “What Clara, Uhm... Ms. Johnson meant that she really loves our company because she helped build it from scratch. She is not thinking of going anywhere soon.”
“Fine, fine! I’m sorry. It’s just that some people just need the right price, and they’re willing to do anything,” Sebastian replied.
Smoke was coming out of Clara’s ears, and Jeremy knew that her temper could probably break their deal if Mr. Colfer did not stop talking soon.
He squeezes Clara’s hand very tightly under the table, lending her his strength and self-restraint. This was one deal they could not walk away from.
“Nope, not Ms. Johnson. She’s very loyal to SST.” Max laughs awkwardly as he stands. It was time to go.
“We’ll leave you to play with the new system and let us know if you think we missed anything.” Max folded his laptop, ready to head out before Clara exploded.
“Again, I apologize. Why don’t we throw this conversation under the rug? I would like to invite all of you to join me for dinner to compensate for my mistake,” Sebastian said apologetically.
He wanted to rile Clara up so she would pay attention to him, but he did not know she was this dedicated to her company. It was funny because he never felt more attracted to her right now when she looks as if she was ready to punch him in the face.
“I was thinking of bringing all of you to the “V.” Not really sure if you are familiar with that restaurant, but I heard that they have the best steak in town. I haven’t been there lately, but this is a suitable occasion to celebrate, don’t you think?”
Clara still had that stony-eyed look on her face and knew that he should not have pushed her too much.
“Please say you’ll come. I want to redeem myself.” he invited.
“No!” she says the same time Max and Jeremy say yes in unison.
That was two against one. She rolls her eyes at them. Such sellouts, she thought, just because of food.
Max raises both his eyebrows at Jeremy and smiles sheepishly.
Mr. Colfer was confusing Jeremy a little with his remarks, but why were they all directed at Clara? He wondered if there was something about his intentions that needed to be explored. Jeremy narrowed his eyes as he looked at Sebastian.
Clara was sitting across from them on the table, and was shaking her head as she mouthed to them, ‘No! We’ll just go by ourselves.’
Max pleaded with her to go, ‘Please, please, please, you promised we were having dinner somewhere fancy.’ He loud whispered which made Clara glare at him to shut his mouth.
Jeremy forgot his suspicions for a moment. “Yeah, I agree,” he followed when Max kicked him under the table.
Clara widens her eyes at both of them. They had planned to eat at the same restaurant before they left, and now Mr. Colfer invited himself to rain on their parade.
“Fine! We’ll be there! Such a bunch of kids. You both owe me,” she said, annoyed that they had to spend more time with Sebastian when they didn’t need to.
‘Why do they have to go, anyway? Who wants to have dinner with this pretentious prick? He thinks he’s handsome, and he can just hit on anybody.’
“We’ll meet you there at 7,” Clara said, glancing at Sebastian before she turned to walk out the door, pushing Max and Jeremy with her.
“You guys are in big trouble!” She mumbles to them.
Don’t you just love Max? Such a troublemaker.
The trio headed back to their hotel and had lunch at the cafe across the street, nothing special. They were saving space for the scrumptious dinner they were having that evening. And because Sebastian was buying, the brothers were thinking of ordering their most expensive steak. After checking their pending emails and calling the office for any updates, they took a quick nap afterward. The siblings wanted to have enough energy for their nighttime activity, and waking up for the first flight that morning zapped their energy.“Hey guys, I want to be there at 6:30, so we can take pictures. I want to show those guys back home where we’re going,” Max reminds them as they got ready. Max always acts like he is still in college, hanging out with his friends. At SST, the policy required everyone to dress business casual most days. Being partial owners allowed them to occasionally break the rules. The unofficial rule was, as long as they didn’t come wearing pajamas and beach attire, the staff
Earlier, Sebastian thought Clara looked pretty up close, but that was a weak word to describe her. To him, she was nothing short of stunning. It felt like he always knew that whatever she'd wear would captivate him. Clara was wearing ankle-length skinny red pants that highlighted her long legs and showed off her assets. She paired it with a silky white sleeveless top that showed off her toned arms. On her feet, she wore black strappy sandals that gave 3 extra inches to her height. She was now almost up to his eye level, and he liked the option that he could probably kiss her much easier from this height. He smiled. Sebastian thought she looked spectacular. Her hair was curled up to one side and held up by a big sparkly comb at her nape, exposing her neck. He shakes his head when he heard himself thinking of nibbling on her neck. ‘These thoughts have to stop before I do something stupid.’ “Hey, do you want me to take the picture for you?” Sebastian volunteers, smiling at all of the
At the dinner table, after a round of pleasant conversation, talking about each company’s history, and the wonderful California weather, Sebastian tried to fish for more information about Clara’s relationship status. He needed to know how closely connected she and Max were. To see if he was going to be his competition.“So tell me,” he was focusing on Clara again, “Are you dating anybody right now?” he stared straight into her eyes, urging her to give him a straight answer.“I don’t divulge personal information to business partners,” Clara said, not backing down from his challenge.“So if I cancel your project,” he smiled sheepishly, “You’ll give me the answer?”Max and Jeremy laughed out loud without meaning to. “Oh, for fuck’s sake, no need to cancel anything. She’s single right now. No boyfriend or dates recently either. Clara loves calla lilies, although she insists flowers are not her thing,” enumerated Max.“Traitors!” Clara said as she coughed into her hand. ‘These idiots kee
Suddenly Celine felt this prickling sensation behind her neck, as if someone was watching. So she looked around, and her heart skipped a beat when she saw it was her mystery guy in the dark suit. She stared right back, issuing a challenge. ‘Hey there. Took you forever to notice me,’ she thought. ‘Let’s see who gives up first?’ She raised an eyebrow, and he grinned, so she smiled back. Celine felt like some communication passed between them in the few seconds they stared at each other.‘He has a cute smile, maybe I will say hi… later,’ she smiled again as she averted her eyes, playing coy. Celine never had luck finding anyone in the club. Most men wanted hookups and booty calls, something to boost their egos. Half of them are probably married, trying to get an easy lay. ‘What made me think this is going to be different? Oh well, we’ll find out later.’ She took one more glance, before turning and began listening to the conversations happening around her. After playing what seems like
Max was content to stare at Celine while she fiddled with his phone. Celine, on the other hand, kept scrolling through the names on Max’s phone and found that Lana was the most frequently dialed number. So she secretly added another Lana entry with her number in it. ‘Heh! You don't get my number that easily. I'll let you figure that out later,’ Celine smiled, pleased with herself. “Heeeey! What are you smiling at?” Max peered over his phone.“Don’t give me your boss’ phone number or your favorite chicken restaurant, okay?” He looked at the number she was entering and saw it had the area code for San Diego, but he was suspicious because of her smile.Celine grins. “I promise I wouldn't do that to you." Max looked at her with doubt as he took his phone to look at it."Here, let me dial my number, so you’d know I’m telling the truth." Celine did not want him to find out her secret so she tapped the entry on his phone. Max felt reassured when he heard her phone ring, so he disconnect
Clara remembered something from her childhood. A sister. They were running away from the nanny. She was upset with them for avoiding bath time. In her memory, she and her sister were laughing out loud, the exact way Celine was laughing right now. She laughed with a distinct sound that brought back all their childhood memories.Jeremy, the ever-attentive brother, noticed Clara before anybody else did when she was not laughing. He was surprised that tears ran down his sister’s face when everyone else was laughing. So he hugged Clara to shield her from everyone’s view and walked away with her face tucked into his shoulder. “It’s going to be okay. We're getting out of here,” he whispered in Clara’s ear.“Uhm... I think she ate something bad. She’s not feeling well. We’ll come back right away,” Jeremy said to the group, his back turned, shielding Clara from their eyes.Sebastian noticed Clara almost the same time Jeremy did, but he did not know what was happening, and his reaction was a
Max found Jeremy and Clara huddled in the gardens, sitting on a bench hidden behind an enormous planter. Clara, though quieter now, was still crying in Jeremy’s arms.“What happened?” Max asked while crouching and rubbing Clara’s hair, “What triggered the tears? Is she okay?”“I'm not sure. But I think it was Celine." Max's brows furrowed."You made her laugh, and something about the sound brought back all her memories.”“Clara kept repeating the phrase, "Celine is my sister." Do you think it’s true?”“We have to look into it. It might be the piece of the puzzle we were looking for.”“We’ve been looking for stories of ten-year-old girls being kidnapped, and we always came up empty. Maybe we should investigate Celine, her family background, to see if she has any siblings. Maybe she plays an integral part in all this.”‘Fuck, I just met her, and we’re already entangled in this stupid mess. I want to be selfish and hope that Clara, for once, is wrong about something. But I want her to hav
Clara’s life changed when she met Mr. Wong in high school. He was a self-defense instructor, training people to work as security guards for high-profile clients and celebrities. She had this innate desire to learn to defend herself, so she begged him to teach her, but without the money to pay him, she volunteered to help him with chores instead, cleaning around the dojo, the bathrooms, and throughout the building.Mr. Wong was surprised that a girl so young as Clara wanted to volunteer in the dojo to get her lessons. She told him about her recurring dream of being abducted and wanted to learn how to protect herself in case it happened in real life. It was a valid argument, and he did not want to discourage her, so he accepted her proposition. The two bonded over time because of her dedication and diligence. Clara would always come after class when her schedule permitted. After each lesson, she would help clean up the room, returning the mats to their proper order and mopping the ent
