Suddenly Celine felt this prickling sensation behind her neck, as if someone was watching. So she looked around, and her heart skipped a beat when she saw it was her mystery guy in the dark suit.
She stared right back, issuing a challenge. ‘Hey there. Took you forever to notice me,’ she thought.
‘Let’s see who gives up first?’ She raised an eyebrow, and he grinned, so she smiled back. Celine felt like some communication passed between them in the few seconds they stared at each other.
‘He has a cute smile, maybe I will say hi… later,’ she smiled again as she averted her eyes, playing coy.
Celine never had luck finding anyone in the club. Most men wanted hookups and booty calls, something to boost their egos. Half of them are probably married, trying to get an easy lay.
‘What made me think this is going to be different? Oh well, we’ll find out later.’ She took one more glance, before turning and began listening to the conversations happening around her.
After playing what seems like the longest game of cat and mouse ever, looking back, then turning away. She brought her attention back to him to evaluate his level of interest.
Whenever she used this tactic, men grow bored and search for easier conquests, forgetting about her altogether.
It was all a test, Celine wouldn't let men get to her that easily. If they can’t be bothered to wait for her to pay attention to them, then they’re not worth talking to.
‘I wonder if he’ll follow if I go to the ladies' room?’ she thought as her nerves started to unravel her.
‘God, I don’t even know what’s come over me, blatantly seeking his attention as if I wanted him. As if I knew what I was doing. If something bad happens to me, this is all my fault.’
‘No, it’s going to be okay.’ She took a deep breath.
‘I’ll make the first move and come to him instead of waiting for him to approach me. I really don’t want my co-workers to talk to him. They’re too much, and they’d probably just hit on him, anyway.’
‘I don’t think I’m okay with that.’
She frowned, ‘What’s with this guy, anyway? Why am I crushing on him so hard?’
Suddenly, she was freaking out. ‘What if he follows me to the restroom? ‘
‘Omg, this would be my first time. What if I get tongue-tied? Omg, why am I so nervous?’
‘It’s going to be okay, just play it cool.’
Celine does an inner monologue before she takes one last drink and suddenly stands up, telling her friends that she needs to go to the ladies’ room.
When they offer to go with her, she declines. It is something Celine wanted to do alone, preferably without an audience. If she makes a fool of herself, then there'd be no witnesses.
Celine makes a beeline for the guy with the dark blue suit purposefully, making eye contact as she brushes past him to get to get to the opposite end of the room.
‘Come, follow me.' Celine issued when she smiled.

A long hallway leading to the restroom offered the perfect venue for them to talk without getting interrupted. The music in this area wasn’t too loud either, so there would be no need to shout or get too close to each other.
Celine hated it when drunk men got too close. They had that unpleasant odor of intoxication seeping from their pores, which disgusted her.
Max called out. “Excuse me!” He said while running catch up.
Celine looked back for a second but then kept on walking but with a slower gait so he could keep up.
“I’m Max. If it’s not too forward, I want to get to know you and ask for your number,’ he finished as he reached her side. Max was going for the direct approach, eliminating any sappy pick-up lines he'd heard before.
Celine was too nervous, but she wanted to play it cool, so she glanced at him and pushed the door to the ladies' room before she stepped in.
‘Shit! Shit! Shit! I froze! Dammit!’ Celine paced in front of the stalls and bit her nails.
‘What do I do now? I hope he’s still out there. No, I hope he left. No. Ugh!’ It was getting hard for her to think because of her nerves.
She took a deep breath and applied the calming techniques she's learned over time.
‘Let me rehearse what I’m going to say.’
While rehearsing, Celine gathered enough courage to face Max, but when a couple of women came in, she lost her nerve to go out. She waited until they left so nobody would hear her babbling.
‘Here we go. Don’t be too easy, but don’t play too hard to get. We want him interested, so don’t talk too much.’
When Celine came out, she was ready to be disappointed.
She took too much time and knew Max had left. But there he was, leaning against the wall, playing with his phone, waiting for her.
He smiled as soon as he got a glimpse of her, his eyes twinkling. “So about that number?”
“My name's Celine,” she had her hand out to take his phone.
“If you stalk me or try to sell me something, I will give your number to the sex hotline,” she warns.
Max laughs and almost drops his phone as he passes it to her. He suddenly felt like a lovesick puppy. Her beauty was even more striking up close.
He had surmised that it was the dim lighting and alcohol buzz that was causing such an overpowering attraction, but he knew this was something more.
‘Her eyes are very lovely, like melted milk chocolate. I feel like I’ve seen eyes like those before,’ Max shakes his head for a moment, removing the images of other women’s faces from his thoughts.
“She has very long lashes, and her mouth looks so inviting,’ he gazes at her very intently, memorizing every feature.
Max wasn’t paying attention to what Celine was doing on his phone because she mesmerized him.
The distance between them grew smaller as he moved closer, inch by inch.
He inhaled discretely to get a whiff of her perfume. ‘Hmmm... I know that scent. It smells a little like Clara’s, but a little more fruity,’ he smiles and closes his eyes, taking another whiff. Her scent was invading his heart.
Celine fumbles with the phone when she noticed Max’s eyes locked on her face. ’Damn! We even have the same phone, but his nearness is making me nervous.’
When she finally figures it out, she hears him take a deep breath.
‘Is he trying to sniff me, or is he bored?’
She glances at him, amused, and he shrugs and smiles back.
‘Good thing I smell good today. That fresh daisy perfume really makes you feel fresh.’
It took a while to convince herself to get this particular brand because she had to splurge for it. She recently started working and splurging on that tiny bottle of perfume was not a good way to spend a hundred of her hard-earned money. She could afford it, but she'd never spent her money on something that frivolous.
Haha Max I think you got yourself a match.
Max was content to stare at Celine while she fiddled with his phone. Celine, on the other hand, kept scrolling through the names on Max’s phone and found that Lana was the most frequently dialed number. So she secretly added another Lana entry with her number in it. ‘Heh! You don't get my number that easily. I'll let you figure that out later,’ Celine smiled, pleased with herself. “Heeeey! What are you smiling at?” Max peered over his phone.“Don’t give me your boss’ phone number or your favorite chicken restaurant, okay?” He looked at the number she was entering and saw it had the area code for San Diego, but he was suspicious because of her smile.Celine grins. “I promise I wouldn't do that to you." Max looked at her with doubt as he took his phone to look at it."Here, let me dial my number, so you’d know I’m telling the truth." Celine did not want him to find out her secret so she tapped the entry on his phone. Max felt reassured when he heard her phone ring, so he disconnect
Clara remembered something from her childhood. A sister. They were running away from the nanny. She was upset with them for avoiding bath time. In her memory, she and her sister were laughing out loud, the exact way Celine was laughing right now. She laughed with a distinct sound that brought back all their childhood memories.Jeremy, the ever-attentive brother, noticed Clara before anybody else did when she was not laughing. He was surprised that tears ran down his sister’s face when everyone else was laughing. So he hugged Clara to shield her from everyone’s view and walked away with her face tucked into his shoulder. “It’s going to be okay. We're getting out of here,” he whispered in Clara’s ear.“Uhm... I think she ate something bad. She’s not feeling well. We’ll come back right away,” Jeremy said to the group, his back turned, shielding Clara from their eyes.Sebastian noticed Clara almost the same time Jeremy did, but he did not know what was happening, and his reaction was a
Max found Jeremy and Clara huddled in the gardens, sitting on a bench hidden behind an enormous planter. Clara, though quieter now, was still crying in Jeremy’s arms.“What happened?” Max asked while crouching and rubbing Clara’s hair, “What triggered the tears? Is she okay?”“I'm not sure. But I think it was Celine." Max's brows furrowed."You made her laugh, and something about the sound brought back all her memories.”“Clara kept repeating the phrase, "Celine is my sister." Do you think it’s true?”“We have to look into it. It might be the piece of the puzzle we were looking for.”“We’ve been looking for stories of ten-year-old girls being kidnapped, and we always came up empty. Maybe we should investigate Celine, her family background, to see if she has any siblings. Maybe she plays an integral part in all this.”‘Fuck, I just met her, and we’re already entangled in this stupid mess. I want to be selfish and hope that Clara, for once, is wrong about something. But I want her to hav
Clara’s life changed when she met Mr. Wong in high school. He was a self-defense instructor, training people to work as security guards for high-profile clients and celebrities. She had this innate desire to learn to defend herself, so she begged him to teach her, but without the money to pay him, she volunteered to help him with chores instead, cleaning around the dojo, the bathrooms, and throughout the building.Mr. Wong was surprised that a girl so young as Clara wanted to volunteer in the dojo to get her lessons. She told him about her recurring dream of being abducted and wanted to learn how to protect herself in case it happened in real life. It was a valid argument, and he did not want to discourage her, so he accepted her proposition. The two bonded over time because of her dedication and diligence. Clara would always come after class when her schedule permitted. After each lesson, she would help clean up the room, returning the mats to their proper order and mopping the ent
At the Hotel Clara got up from bed and went to the bathroom. She needed to change into something more comfortable. Her brothers let her go to bed with her party clothes on. Probably because she had already passed out by the time they got back and did not want to wake her again. They took turns watching her throughout the night, knowing this was going to be rough on her. Because of her constant nightmares, she didn’t stop crying until she ensured that both of them were near. She looked at her brothers lovingly at the foot of the bed. ‘What would my life have been without these two? I’m thankful those assholes dumped me in that orphanage. I think this time we will find our closure. Celine is holding our key. I hope next time we find ourselves together, it will be because a
In the Office They were eyeing each other when Jeremy suddenly walked in. Sebastian was trying to find out why she was lying and what she was lying about, but now was not the time to pry. ‘So I don’t believe we covered the remote connection to the cameras yesterday,’ Jeremy volunteered. ‘Let me show you how to access it from your phone and from your other devices. This would definitely make it easier for you to monitor the office when you go out of town.’ ‘Okay,’ Sebastian said as he stood up and returned to his desk, giving Clara one last look. She was already busy clicking away on her computer. Clara was not particularly interested in having lunch right now. She was concentrating on finding out more information regarding her sister and her family. So fa
Clara held her breath. There was blatant interest in his eyes, and it scared her that he would kiss her right there and then. His eyes were so intensely green right now, and she couldn’t look away. It was like there was nobody else but them in the elevator, and all she could hear was her heart beating loudly in her chest. The more she spent time with him, the more she felt compelled to do whatever it was he wanted. ‘Kiss me,’ her brain said. Looking into his eyes was a mistake. It drew her in like you would imagine a vampire mesmerizing his prey. He had a very tiny scar on his upper lip that she wanted to run her lips over. The ding of the elevator saved her from embarrassing herself. She almost collapsed on the flo
Clara had been quiet on the plane ride home. She had a lot of things to process. Was she really Carmen Jacobs? Is that going to be good or bad? What does that mean for her and her brothers when they finally find her family? Will they be welcoming? Of course, she would not abandon her brothers for anyone, she’s spent most of her life with them already, and they would continue to be together. It just meant that, finally, she would have closure. She did not remember if she had pictures when she was younger. Not even one with Max and Jeremy as kids. In fact, they were so poor that pictures would get taken only for records and identification. So she had nothing to compare to the photo in that news article. At an age when kids were making memories with their friends, she was already working. In her hand, sh
