The trio headed back to their hotel and had lunch at the cafe across the street, nothing special. They were saving space for the scrumptious dinner they were having that evening. And because Sebastian was buying, the brothers were thinking of ordering their most expensive steak.

After checking their pending emails and calling the office for any updates, they took a quick nap afterward.

The siblings wanted to have enough energy for their nighttime activity, and waking up for the first flight that morning zapped their energy.

“Hey guys, I want to be there at 6:30, so we can take pictures. I want to show those guys back home where we’re going,” Max reminds them as they got ready.

Max always acts like he is still in college, hanging out with his friends. At SST, the policy required everyone to dress business casual most days. Being partial owners allowed them to occasionally break the rules.

The unofficial rule was, as long as they didn’t come wearing pajamas and beach attire, the staff could dress as casually as they wanted.

Clara wanted staff to be in an environment where everyone felt comfortable and didn’t need to put on airs.

This was because most of the people working for them were from local orphanages or were student workers. Their salaries usually went to their studies or lodgings.

Clara did not want them to feel pressured to spend hard-earned money on fancy clothing. They could do that later when they earned actual salaries.

She only had one exception. When there were presentations, she required everyone involved in that project to dress their best. That way, people do not underestimate them and their capabilities.

As for the rest, the technicians and other people who visit the sites, have uniforms provided to eliminate the confusion of being mistaken for intruders.

Clara’s personal philosophy was that clothes do not make a person.

SST employees give it their all, no matter what background they came from so they are all given the same opportunity.

-=-

The Johnson siblings got to the “V” early so there would be enough time to take pictures and get drinks before “The President,” sarcastically termed by Clara, came to join them.

She wanted the siblings to enjoy this time together as they seldom go out as a group the past few days.

Being too busy launching their product and developing their technology left them tired all the time. It was as if the more money they were taking in, the more drained they became. Some days, they don’t even see each other at home.

The “V” had an outdoor balcony where people hung out while waiting for their reservations. So the siblings chose this as their selfie spot.

Selfies seemed foolish to some people, but growing up without any pictures or remnants from their youth, the siblings longed to capture all their memories so they would have something to look back on when they get older.

To thwart Sebastian’s advances, Clara decided against wearing the off-shoulder black dress that she brought just for the occasion.

“What happened to the dress you were wearing?” Max asked while they took turns for their solos.

“I don’t want him to think I was dressing up to impress him. Plus, I don’t like the way he stares at me. I feel like his prey.” Clara shuddered feeling like Sebastian’s eyes were already on her.

Jeremy shrugged waiting for his sister to spill everything on her mind.

“I’m a grown woman, and I will not be a subject of anybody’s fantasies.”

“Whoa, whoa, whoa... When did this happen?” Max reacted.

“Are we talking about who I think we are talking about?” He winked at his sister to tease her.

“I thought he was a very nice guy. Very handsome if you ask me.” Max chided. He was pretending not to know what was happening as he winks at Jeremy.

“Sis, maybe it’s time you thought about someone that way. You are not getting any younger. You know, biological clock and all.”

Clara swiped him with her purse. “What do you know about biological clocks? I’m not that old.”

“Plus you don’t want to end up as a cougar, preying on the young, do you?’ Max added, smiling to himself.

Jeremy chuckled silently. His siblings always came up with the most interesting conversations when they argued with each other.

“Oh, shut up! Cougar? You think I’m a cougar?” she slaps Max on the arm.

“You’re not old and we both know what you mean. This idiot here is just teasing you.” Jeremy stared pointedly at Max, telling him to stop before her feelings got hurt.

“Heeey! I’m not an idiot. I’m a matchmaker!” Max said, forming a heart with his hands.

“I love you, Clara,” she shook her head and laughed.

“If you do not want his attention or his comments, let me know. I’m here. I will protect you,’” said the ever-loyal Jeremy.

Being the youngest, he had always been protective of his siblings. He would do anything for them to keep them together. No CEO would steal his sister any time with his sweet words, just to play with her feelings.

“Thank you, my dearest,” Clara says while pinching his cheeks. “See, this is the reason you are my favorite.”

“Hey!” Max pouts even before Jeremy can show his disgusted face. “Why is he your favorite? I’m much more handsome than he is.”

“You are such a kid, Max. Just stop it.” She glared. “But kidding aside, I’m glad you guys came with me today. It wouldn’t have been the same without you. Remember when we did these installations a lot in the beginning? Those were memorable.”

The men nodded and thought about those times when they were starting up the business.

‘For the record, I love both of you equally. I am so lucky to have you in my life,” Clara says as she hugs them together and kisses both their cheeks.

“We just need a little more patience, and all our hard work will pay off soon.” She wipes the lipstick off their faces before continuing. She was getting teary-eyed.

“This is it, guys. The beginning of our success. I think this calls for a drink,” she says, looking around for the bar.

Sebastian arrived ahead of time just so he could have drinks with the SST staff before dinner.

He overheard them saying they were going to be at the bar at 6:30, so they could take pictures. He planned to join their activity by volunteering to take their pictures. His goal was to get closer to Clara.

As he tries to look around the restaurant lobby, he witnesses the touching moment between them. Suddenly, something primal within him seemed to have awoken, and he felt a little angry.

‘What is happening here? Are they that close? Why are they hugging?’

‘Jeremy seems too young for her, but Max? Are they in a relationship?’ He frowned.

‘I checked her files. It said nothing about a boyfriend or a husband. She’s supposed to be single. That’s why I’m actively pursuing her.’

‘This can’t be happening. I just found her.’

‘She’s MINE!’ his head roared. The thoughts screaming at him shocked him and rendered him immobile. So he took a few minutes to calm down and recoup.

Uh oh, Sebastian, you’re in trouble.

Earlier, Sebastian thought Clara looked pretty up close, but that was a weak word to describe her. To him, she was nothing short of stunning. It felt like he always knew that whatever she'd wear would captivate him. Clara was wearing ankle-length skinny red pants that highlighted her long legs and showed off her assets. She paired it with a silky white sleeveless top that showed off her toned arms. On her feet, she wore black strappy sandals that gave 3 extra inches to her height. She was now almost up to his eye level, and he liked the option that he could probably kiss her much easier from this height. He smiled. Sebastian thought she looked spectacular. Her hair was curled up to one side and held up by a big sparkly comb at her nape, exposing her neck. He shakes his head when he heard himself thinking of nibbling on her neck. ‘These thoughts have to stop before I do something stupid.’ “Hey, do you want me to take the picture for you?” Sebastian volunteers, smiling at all of the

At the dinner table, after a round of pleasant conversation, talking about each company’s history, and the wonderful California weather, Sebastian tried to fish for more information about Clara’s relationship status. He needed to know how closely connected she and Max were. To see if he was going to be his competition.“So tell me,” he was focusing on Clara again, “Are you dating anybody right now?” he stared straight into her eyes, urging her to give him a straight answer.“I don’t divulge personal information to business partners,” Clara said, not backing down from his challenge.“So if I cancel your project,” he smiled sheepishly, “You’ll give me the answer?”Max and Jeremy laughed out loud without meaning to. “Oh, for fuck’s sake, no need to cancel anything. She’s single right now. No boyfriend or dates recently either. Clara loves calla lilies, although she insists flowers are not her thing,” enumerated Max.“Traitors!” Clara said as she coughed into her hand. ‘These idiots kee

Suddenly Celine felt this prickling sensation behind her neck, as if someone was watching. So she looked around, and her heart skipped a beat when she saw it was her mystery guy in the dark suit. She stared right back, issuing a challenge. ‘Hey there. Took you forever to notice me,’ she thought. ‘Let’s see who gives up first?’ She raised an eyebrow, and he grinned, so she smiled back. Celine felt like some communication passed between them in the few seconds they stared at each other.‘He has a cute smile, maybe I will say hi… later,’ she smiled again as she averted her eyes, playing coy. Celine never had luck finding anyone in the club. Most men wanted hookups and booty calls, something to boost their egos. Half of them are probably married, trying to get an easy lay. ‘What made me think this is going to be different? Oh well, we’ll find out later.’ She took one more glance, before turning and began listening to the conversations happening around her. After playing what seems like

Max was content to stare at Celine while she fiddled with his phone. Celine, on the other hand, kept scrolling through the names on Max’s phone and found that Lana was the most frequently dialed number. So she secretly added another Lana entry with her number in it. ‘Heh! You don't get my number that easily. I'll let you figure that out later,’ Celine smiled, pleased with herself. “Heeeey! What are you smiling at?” Max peered over his phone.“Don’t give me your boss’ phone number or your favorite chicken restaurant, okay?” He looked at the number she was entering and saw it had the area code for San Diego, but he was suspicious because of her smile.Celine grins. “I promise I wouldn't do that to you." Max looked at her with doubt as he took his phone to look at it."Here, let me dial my number, so you’d know I’m telling the truth." Celine did not want him to find out her secret so she tapped the entry on his phone. Max felt reassured when he heard her phone ring, so he disconnect

  • Clara's Mystery   9 - Sister

Clara remembered something from her childhood. A sister. They were running away from the nanny. She was upset with them for avoiding bath time. In her memory, she and her sister were laughing out loud, the exact way Celine was laughing right now. She laughed with a distinct sound that brought back all their childhood memories.Jeremy, the ever-attentive brother, noticed Clara before anybody else did when she was not laughing. He was surprised that tears ran down his sister’s face when everyone else was laughing. So he hugged Clara to shield her from everyone’s view and walked away with her face tucked into his shoulder. “It’s going to be okay. We're getting out of here,” he whispered in Clara’s ear.“Uhm... I think she ate something bad. She’s not feeling well. We’ll come back right away,” Jeremy said to the group, his back turned, shielding Clara from their eyes.Sebastian noticed Clara almost the same time Jeremy did, but he did not know what was happening, and his reaction was a

But I think it was Celine." Max's brows furrowed."You made her laugh, and something about the sound brought back all her memories.”“Clara kept repeating the phrase, "Celine is my sister." Do you think it’s true?”“We have to look into it. It might be the piece of the puzzle we were looking for.”“We’ve been looking for stories of ten-year-old girls being kidnapped, and we always came up empty. At the Hotel Clara got up from bed and went to the bathroom. She needed to change into something more comfortable. Her brothers let her go to bed with her party clothes on. Because of her constant nightmares, she didn’t stop crying until she ensured that both of them were near. She looked at her brothers lovingly at the foot of the bed. ‘What would my life have been without these two? I’m thankful those assholes dumped me in that orphanage. This event was going to be a surprise. And even though deep in his heart he knew her answer, that she wanted to marry him, he still couldn’t help but feel apprehensive about her reaction. Clara was not a simple person. She was very complex in her reactions and outbursts. He prayed to all the gods in heaven to help them today. There was no denying that as soon as Clara steps in front of the doors that led to the patio, she would know what he had planned for her because waiting at the door was her father, Nathan Jacobs.

Who let you in?’ ‘We got in last night, and you said you wanted to rehearse and set up the equipment before the presentation, so here we are,’ Max said with jazz hands waving in the air. The house was eerily quiet when they got home. ‘Mom! Dad! I’m home!’ Clara called out as she came in through the door. That should have been an indication that something was wrong because they had left the front door unlocked. When none of the regular security was present around the property, she just assumed they blended in with the background. But her excitement at getting away from her abductors got the better of her. She did not apply the regular protocols for security. Her mom, dad, and sister sat on the sofa in a neat line, with their hands behind her back, their mouths covered with tape. The gun she felt pointed at the side of her head made everything click into place. The kidnappers had a backup plan, and they were waiting at her parent’s home. They took the whole family hostage as a las

She had to bring them in front of her, making it easier to get out of the zip ties that bound them together. Clara falls flat on her face even before she can get anywhere. It was better to be safe than sorry. Clara could yell at him if that's what she wanted. He deserves it, after all. He pretended to make a phone call, hiding near the men’s restroom doors. When he saw two uniformed hotel staff come out of the women’s restroom with a hotel trolley, the kind used to carry all the sheets and linens from rooms that have been emptied and he grew suspicious. These men didn’t look like the regular hotel staff. They looked more buff and were suspiciously gruff-looking, covered with all those tattoos. So when they left, he checked inside the restroom, and
