He’s smiling up at me. Pleased with himself that he had figured it out. Or maybe Nate had told him? It didn’t seem likely. Nate had bound Lola and Mason, forbade them to speak of it.

“You’re supposed to be with the others.” I mutter, trying to distract him. “Is Nate okay?”

“Trust me, you would know if something had happened to him.” He grabs hold of the first branch and starts pulling himself up the tree towards me. “Why are you hiding?”

“I’m not.”

“A bag full of things, hiding in a tree, almost twenty feet off the ground. It tells me that you are running.”

“I’m not running. I just….”

“You’re panicking.” His eyes narrow at me. “You feel trapped. Caught between us and the humans.”

How did he know so much about me?

“You are making a mistake, Elsa. How were you planning to hide when we take over?”

He’s almost level with me now. My stomach was in my throat. My heart was racing in my chest. What did he want with me?
