My name is Drizella, but you can call me Driz. A few years ago, my mother re-married for the sake of myself and my sister, Anastasia.
Shortly after moving into my new step-fathers' home, he fell ill and we were left living with his daughter, Ella. Mother did not like having a third daughter to raise, so she moved Ella into the shed outside; "out of sight, out of mind," she would say. I pitied Ella, she seemed harmless to me.

I dreamt that Anastasia and I were moving things from our old house to the new one. She and I were put in charge of all the heavy lifting, seeing as she and I were of equal size and strength, being only one year apart. Sadly, part of the heavy lifting included the piano. For some reason, Ana told me to push it through the window, which was now suddenly the size of the entire wall. She started pushing without hearing my objection, and before I knew it, the piano had fallen out of the house and onto someone who I could only describe as a zombie. Somehow, suddenly I was inside the piano when it fell. The slam of the piano to the ground was what woke me, only it wasn't. It was Ana slamming shut the trunk at the end of the bed.
"What are you doing?" I asked, drowsy. "The ball is tonight and I can't find anything the right color to bring out my eyes!" she responded with a frustrated sigh.
I rolled my eyes and put the pillow over my head, trying to drown her out. Ana was known around the court for her bright green eyes, and she did anything she could to make them a focal point of hers, seeing the only other attribute of hers worth noting was her clumsiness.
She looked out the window to the shed and continued, "I wonder if our little Cinderella will try to come to the ball tonight. The invitation stated for all women of each household to attend, but I can't imagine anyone like her being there!" she said through a laugh and a horribly attempted accent. I don't even know what accent she was attempting; all I know is she sounded ridiculous.
"What on earth is that accent you're putting on, Ana?" I snapped. She whipped around to look at me "Do not call me that! My name is not Ana, and it's not Anastasia! My name," she continued calmly coming towards me, "is Anastausia. Say it with me, sister, repeat after me," she sat on my bed and said very slowly "Ana-" then looked at me and motioned with her hands for me to repeat. Feeling too tired to fight, I amused her, "Ana-" I responded with some sarcasm. She looked at me sternly and finished "stausia. Ana-Stausia is how it's pronounced. extra emphasis on the U," she informed me. Stunned, the only response I could come up with was "Ah." I got up and went downstairs.
The cold wood hit my toes outside the door and I realized that I had left my room without any slippers and in my night slip. I hurried back inside my room and picked the first dress I saw and threw it on. Ana was still rummaging the trunk when I finished dressing, only this time she was going through my trunk. I rolled my eyes again and left.
Downstairs, I found Mother in the dining room having her breakfast. She looked regal as always, with perfect posture and using her cutlery so gentle as to barely make a sound on the porcelain plate. The sound of my steps brought her eyes to mine and she gave me a slight grin.
"Where is your sister?" she asked.
"Still losing her mind over tonight," I responded.
Mother put down her utensils and looked at me for a moment before commenting "You seem utterly calm. Are you not nervous like your sister?"
"No. Worrying will do nothing and being nervous would not come across as confident to the Prince or King," I took a seat and adjusted my posture to match hers. She gave me a slight smile that I could tell she tried to suppress. We ate in silence until Ana came in stomping her feet in frustration.
"What's the matter, dear?" mother asked her.
"I have less than twelve hours to get ready for the ball tonight, that's what's the matter," she snapped as she flopped into her seat and started eating a croissant, getting crumbs all over herself. Mother and I shared a look at each other before silently going back to our meal.
I felt bad about how stressed my sister was and wanted to comfort her a little. I cleared my throat "Ahem. Ana-" "NO!" Ana slammed her fist on the table cutting me off. She glared at me and started breathing heavily until she calmed and could speak. "Stop calling me that," she said through clenched teeth, "the name Ana is short and simple, implying that I, myself, am short and simple, and I will not have people thinking of me as simple!" she stared at me a moment longer with her lips clenched in a line then exhaled sharply and left the room.
Mother looked at me once again with a glimpse of sorrow in her eyes, then continued her breakfast. We finished our meal in silence and I excused myself to my room to start my own preparations for tonight.
I had expected to find Ana in our room, face down on the bed, instead, I was stopped at the base of the steps when I spotted her silhouette out back. I walked out slowly, she must have come out here to cool down but her cheeks were still red. She had her arms crossed and was staring at the shed that Ella stayed in. I stood by her silently.
"Do you think people would think our little Cinderella simple?" she asked in a soft tone.
I hesitated. Treading lightly, I responded "well I couldn't say, she's not been out away from the house a lot,"
"I suppose," she seemed happy with my response then looked at me "We should keep it that way."
I woke up groggy with crust in the corner of my eyes after a harsh night's sleep, I splashed water from the well on my face and made my way to the henhouse to get eggs for breakfast. Usually, I sleep quite well; I am typically tired after a day's work with my chores, so I fall fast asleep. Ever since getting the invitation to the ball, though, my mind has been elsewhere. What will it be like? What kind of music will be playing? Will I have to dance? I haven't danced in years since my father passed. How many people will be there? The invitation invited everyone, especially the females of the court since the purpose of the ball was to find a wife for the prince. Gosh, what is he like?I tried to put all these questions to the back of my mind while making my way to the main house. 'No, Ella, you still have chores to do before getting ready for
After sitting down on my cot to work on the dress, I looked up to see out of my little window to find both of my step sisters looking my way. Hesitantly, I stood up and started to pace. 'If I go out there and talk to them it could turn out awful and they will give me too many chores to finish before the ball' I worried, but then anxiety kicked in and I thought 'if they saw me glance at them and they think I'm ignoring them, then they will just get madder and I could be making things even worse now.I pressed myself against the dusty wall and peeked back out through the window with one eye in hopes that they were gone and I could avoid any altercation. They were still standing there, still as statues. Their hair flowing in the wind, both brunette, practically identical despite being a year apart. They stood in their cloaks to shield them from the wind. I knew I couldn't avoid them anymore if I wanted to keep t
Anastasia and I finished getting ready for the ball and descended the staircase to the foyer where mother was already waiting.Mother looked beautiful; she was wearing a red mermaid gown, made with silk that hugged her whole body, accentuating her curves. While slimming and gaze drawing, it was modest for a mother presenting her daughters to a prince. Her neckline wasn't too low, her shoulders were covered, and she had a matching hairpiece with a piece of lace covering part of her face.Mother turned on her heel to turn to us and let out a breath of relief as she closed her fan. "My, my daughters. You both look so lovely. I cannot wait for the royal family to see you.""Thank you, Mother," Ana responded. Ana had chosen an off-the-shoulder green gown to bring out her green eyes. It bill
* * *DrizellaThe carriage ride to the castle was a bumpy one, the closer we got the more nervous I became. I tried to recall the sound of my dress before we left home, twirling around with my sister made me giddy and excited.I closed my eyes and tried to bring that giddy feeling back. I kicked my legs a little to hear the rustling of the fabric but the carriage was too small. I put my hand on my stomach and inhaled deeply. It smelled of fresh rain and newly cut grass, we were no doubt nearing the castle.I opened my eyes to see and we were coming just around the corner to the castle. I was right; it had rained and the lawn outside the castle was freshly trimmed and gardened with roses of all colors.I got thinking
"Lady Tremaine and her daughters, a Miss Drizella and a Miss Anastasia"My heart skipped a beat and my whole body went cold when I heard my name. Ana and I looked at each other and I placed my hands together just as she had. We smiled at each other and walked forward into the grand ballroom. If I thought the hallway was mesmerizing leading to the ballroom then the actual ballroom was exquisite. The white marble continued to the dance floor where it finally broke into a pattern of rings, drawing an eye to the center of the dance floor where the prince would dance with his future wife. The ceiling was covered in white Alexander tiles and held up by marble pillars so wide in size that my arms couldn't reach around even half of
I kept a tight hold on the back of the carriage as we made our way to the castle. The roads were bumpy after the rain and my hands were starting to lose their grip, but I waited until I could see the castle to jump off the back of the carriage and walk the rest of the way.My hair was blowing in the wind and my face was losing feeling from the chill. I buried my face down into my chest trying to keep warm when I saw the lights from the castle in the corner of my eye.I looked up and saw a long line of carriages moving slowly in a trail towards the front steps. The air has an amazing feeling after it rains where the air seems fresher, cleaner, and overall I felt healthier inhaling it.Hopping down from the carriage, I took a deep breath and felt all my worries wash away with the fresh a
I continued repeating to myself 'I am brave, I am courageous, I am strong' and as soon as I got to the steps of the castle I looked up, took a big breath, smiled, and said "I am grateful."When I reached the top of the steps, I noticed people stopped outside the entrance to the ballroom as their names were being announced as they walked in. 'Oh no, I can't have my presence announced if I want to stay hidden from my stepmother and stepsisters. I have to find another way in.'I looked around frantically for another entrance to the ballroom and found a staircase that led down. Without hesitation I started down them watching my feet to be sure not to trip, my shoes were still wet from the walk, and I didn't want to fall.I reached the lower level safely and turned a corner that led t
The music faded and everyone applauded the dancers. Even with the roar of applause, our eyes never left each other. The next song began, it was 'The Blue Danube', my personal favorite, a classic. The handsome guard put his hand out and asked me "May I have this dance?"I hesitated, looking at his hand extended to me I thought of the feeling I had when the footman had given me his hand to exit the carriage. I didn't want him to stop for some reason. 'Have I been longing for a man's touch so much that the slightest thing sends electricity through my body?' I thought to myself and felt pathetic. Yet here is a man who doesn't just want to hold my hand, but put his hand on my back and dance. The thought alone gave me goosebumps and I grabbed his hand with a smile and nod. Apparently, my voi
Five years passed after Lady Tremaine’s death and Driz and Peter had now assumed the throne. A new mailman was appointed to share the news, and the royal colors had been changed from purple and gold to navy blue and white, same as Driz's dress at the ball.King Archibald remained on the throne for an extra year to prepare Peter and Driz for their ascension, stepping down when he felt they were ready. He now lived in the West Village with Malcolm and Alma, helping to repair the village after Lucinda's attack there.Peter had worked things out with his parents and used his new power as King to bring new plants overseas to learn their medicinal properties - the plants were left in his parent's garden to grow and the experiments were handed to Driz to conduct and discover their benefits. They built a hospital in the center of the kingdom, equal distance from each village, and put former coachman Davis in charge as the
* * *AnaThe surprise of our uncle showing up after neither of us remember meeting him and our mother telling us that he ran away a decade ago was perplexing, and neither Driz nor I knew just how to feel about it, or about him. He seemed an odd man, but then again, his entire family was killed, possibly because of his own sister, God, how I wanted to be in that dungeon to hear everything. It was barely midday when Joseph showed up, and it was now dinner time, everyone was gathered at the table for once, enjoying our time together.“Is Joseph still in the dungeon with mother?” I whispered to Driz from her side.“He must be, no one has mentioned seeing him since,” she responded. It was odd that Joseph had spent hours in the dungeon alone with our mother, then again, he seemed like an odd one from the beginning. “They haven’t seen each other in nearly a decade
The dungeon was now only occupied with Joseph and his sister Lucinda, waiting patiently for her sentencing to commence. The sibling's reunion was a difficult one, Joseph had kept his word about looking over his sister until she wed, but Lucinda thought that he took the easy route by marrying her off to the first man he could, and she blamed Joseph’s wife, Danielle, for the influence. The man that he married Lucinda to, was a kind one, tall, good-looking, well-spoken, and they began a family in no time, but he was the first man to show interest in Lucinda after Archibald left her for Malinda; She was heartbroken at the time, and longing for attention to bandage her wounded heart, so she didn’t fight it and married the man who would give her two beautiful daughters in the coming years. Her husband died of natural causes, leaving Lucinda and her young daughters alone until they showed up on Joseph’s doorstep one day, begging f
* * *DrizellaAna and I headed back to the receiving room where Derek was supposed to bring our uncle Joseph after tending to the horses, they should be there by now after our walk to find Charles and ask if it was alright for Joseph to speak with her.“What is he like?” I asked Ana before we reached the room, “our uncle, what is he like?”Ana took a moment to calculate her response and the silence made me slightly nervous, “He is very much like our mother, I’m afraid. Mannerisms, expressions, features, I don’t know about tendencies, though.”“Good to know,” I nodded my head at her as we continued to walk that way. We had to be careful who exactly to trust now that we learned our mother is a murderer and someone who scrapbooks her tortures.Ana and I took a deep breath before we turned the corner to enter the rec
* * *AnaDerek and I walked into the cottage with Joseph just behind us and looked around; the house was cozy and looked like it housed a large and happy family for years. The tapestries were colorful and there was a full china cabinet, trinkets along the fireplace shelf, and wind chimes you could hear from outside filled the house with a whimsical charm.“Can I offer you two some tea?” Joseph said but I denied, still wary of the gentleman. We all sat down on sofas that were opposite each other and stared at each other for a good moment before he spoke again with his palms facing upward as he asked, “What can I do for you two?”I had no idea what exactly we were doing here, so I looked at Derek and let him do the talking, “We heard of your in-laws passing and wanted to offer our condolences.”Joseph’s eyebrows shot up for a moment, “Oh, why that
* * *AnaI was swooning around the castle after seeing Peter propose to Driz, it was straight out of a fairy tale that I got to witness, and my heart was so happy for my sister, I know how much she loves him. I began twirling in the hallway as I walked back to my room and of course, I tripped.Derek caught me again, just as he had caught me the first time I ever saw him in the castle, only this time he held me there midair longer, just looking at me before pulling me back upright.I straightened my dress and cleared my throat, “Thank you, please excuse me,” I bowed my head quickly to him and continued on my way to my room. I could feel that he had stayed where he was, watching me as I walked away, but I paid him no mind. He left me after we kissed and then got all awkward about it, I didn’t want to be around him after he embarrassed me like that, even if there were no witnesses to my humiliation
* * *PeterI knew exactly what I wanted to do to ask Driz to be my queen, I would ask her the way that I had originally planned to ask her to marry me. I ended up asking her to marry me while we were lying in bed the night after I saved her from the bandits, I was watching her rest peacefully next to me, and she had a black eye, which had thankfully healed quickly. My original plan was to wait until I had my blue roses and present her with one, but thinking back on the idea now, it seemed too weak, I needed to go big.“Derek!” I caught him in the hallway and rushed to him, “I need your help with planning a proposal for Driz,”His eyebrows scrunched together, “But you are already married?”“Not to be my wife, to be my queen,” I told him and his face lit up, his eyebrows went back to normal and he smiled broadly at me.
* * *DrizellaPeter seemed lost in his thoughts as we tended to the new patients in the castle, I feared that it was my mother’s doing that made these ten people fall ill suddenly overnight, and guilt came over me as I looked at them.We were walking together towards Charles’s room where he and Ella had been staying when I asked him, “What are you thinking about?”He continued looking forward when he answered, “You know, if we end up really doing this, we will have a lot of support behind us,” he looked at me with a twinkle in his eye that made me smile, “I am shocked at what they said, but I got thinking of everything I could do, that we could do, and it’s really exciting, don’t you think?”I smiled back at him, “Yes, it is exciting, it will take some time to get used to being referred to as ‘your highness&rsquo
* * *PeterDriz and I talked some more and decided that no matter what happens, we will be strong enough together to get through it, but the decision was a massive one, and we wanted to speak with Charles and Ella together before deciding anything and announcing it. We were leaving our room when I saw Derek running towards us, a slight look of panic across his face.“Pete! I just talked to one of the servants and he said that ten more people have fallen sick just overnight,” he was panting from his run.I looked at Driz and she had the same startled look as I did initially, but then her face turned to determination and she said to me, “I’ll be in the greenhouse,” and I knew that she was going to make some of my signature brew for everyone.I grinned at her and kissed her forehead before she left and then looked back to Derek, “Take me to them,” and he
